'Torture, Crime and the Bush Administration Lawyers'

Monday, 26 October 2009, 3:00 - 5:00 hrs.

Philippe Sands is Professor of Law and Director of the Centre of International Courts and Tribunals at the University College, London. He has published extensively in the fields of international environmental law, international humanitarian law, international courts and tribunals and international institutional law. He also has extensive experience as a practitioner and arbitrator in commercial and public international law cases before inter alia, the International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration and ICSID Arbitration Panels.

Prof. Sands has published two books for general readers on themes relating to international law: 'Lawless World' and ‘Torture Team". His lecture will be on the theme of the latter book that explored the production inside the Bush administration of the so-called 'Torture Memorandum' that permitted the use of torture on Al-Qaeda detainees and the responsibility of lawyers in drafting this memo.

The lecture will take place from 15.00hrs. onwards, followed by drinks.
