'Will Houla be al-Assad’s My Lai? Artillery Massacre of Children in Syria

Syria’s military bombarded the town of Houla in Homs province on Saturday, killing 90 persons, including dozens of children, according to opposition sources.

The Baath regime in Syria has survived despite 14 months of popular rallies, demonstrations and revolts because at least half of Syrians, especially in the big cities such as Aleppo and the capital, Damascus, have been more afraid of a Muslim fundamentalist takeover than of a continued one-party dictatorship.

The harsh crackdowns of the security forces on peaceful civilian rallies and the deployment of snipers against them has changed some minds, and the government attacks on protesting university students in Aleppo recently provoked significant demonstrations in that city.

The Baath military typically only deploys artillery against city quarters dominated by defectors and armed men of the Syrian Free Army, and my guess is that they were attempting to retake Houla from the SFA. Artillery barrages allow them to avoid taking high casualties in hard hand to hand fighting in narrow city alleyways.

But artillery is a blunt weapon, and if it hits apartment buildings full of non-combatants, it can cause a massacre. Seems to me that bombarding an inhabited city quarter is almost always a war crime, since civilian casualties are eminently foreseeable.

The outcome in Houla is so horrific that it may turn the stomachs of the remaining Syrians who are on the fence, and produce a new backlash against the regime. The revolution in Syria is a contest of wills between the regime on the one hand, and on the other the revolutionaries (who have a civil and a military wing that seldom agree). The revolutionaries have remained steadfast in the face of massive brutality, for over a year. Their will seems strong. The regime seems to be popular in fewer and fewer places. The will of all but its devoted cadres is being shaken.

The inner core of the Baath Party is incapable of feeling remorse or taking responsibility. But it depends on the support or at least acquiescence of millions of ordinary people, who will likely be touched by Houla. Just as the US public began turning against the Vietnam War because of events like the My Lai massacre, so Houla could be a turning point.

Likewise, Houla could have an impact at the UN Security Council. It seems increasingly clear that the Kofi Annan plan of filling the country with UN observers to encourage adherence to a cease fire is a dead letter. The question at the UN has to be, “what next?”

Those who ridicule the idea of an international responsibility to protect as a mere stalking horse of neo-imperialism will please have the decency at least to denounce the Baath regime for this bloodbath.'

The Oligarchy's Rule of Law: From Russia to Oklahoma

(Photo: Jim Domke)At the end of the 1990s, after the total collapse of the mass-privatization experiment in Boris Yeltin's Russia, some of the more earnest free-market proselytizers tried making sense of it all. The unprecedented collapse of Russia's economy and its capital markets, the wholesale looting, the quiet extermination of millions of Russians from the shock and destitution (Russian male life expectancy plummeted from 68 years to 56 years)—the terrible consequences of imposing radical libertarian free-market ideas on an alien culture—turned out worse than any worst-case-scenario imagined by the free-market true-believers.

Of all the disastrous results of that experiment, what troubled many Western free-market true-believers most wasn't so much the mass poverty and population collapse, but rather, the way things turned out so badly in Russia's newly-privatized companies and industries. That was the one thing that was supposed to go right. According to the operative theory—developed by the founding fathers of libertarianism/neoliberalism, Friedrich von Hayek, Ludwig von Mises, Milton Friedman and the rest—a privately-owned company will always outperform a state-run company because private ownership and the profit-motive incentivize the owners to make their companies stronger, more efficient, more competitive, and so on. The theory promises that everyone benefits except for the bad old state and the lazy.

That was the dominant libertarian theory framing the whole "shock doctrine" privatization experiment in Russia and elsewhere. In reality, as everyone was forced to admit by 1999, Russia's privatized companies were stripped and plundered as fast as their new private owners could loot them, leaving millions of workers without salaries, and most of Russia's industry in far worse shape than the Communists left it.

Most of the free-market proselytizers—ranging from Clinton neoliberal Michael McFaul (currently Obama's ambassador to Moscow) to libertarian Pinochet fanboy Andrei Illarionov (currently with the Cato Institute)– blamed everything but free-market experiments for Russia's collapse.

But some of the more earnest believers whose libertarian faith was shaken by what happened to Corporate Russia needed something more sophisticated than a crude historical whitewash.

Lucky for them, Milton Friedman provided the answer to a Cato Institute interviewer: Russia lacked "rule of law"—another neoliberal/libertarian catchphrase that went mainstream in the late 80s. Without "rule of law," Friedman and the rest of the free-market faithful argued, privatization was bound to fail. Here's Friedman's answer in the Cato Institute's 2002 Economic Freedom of the World Report:

CATO: If we reflect upon the fall of communism and the transition from the centrally planned economy to a market economy, what have we learned in the last decade of the importance of economic freedom and other institutions that may be necessary to support economic freedom?
MILTON FRIEDMAN: We have learned about the importance of private property and the rule of law as a basis for economic freedom. Just after the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union collapsed, I used to be asked a lot: "What do these ex-communist states have to do in order to become market economies?" And I used to say: "You can describe that in three words: privatize, privatize, privatize." But, I was wrong. That wasn't enough. The example of Russia shows that. Russia privatized but in a way that created private monopolies-private centralized economic controls that replaced government's centralized controls. It turns out that the rule of law is probably more basic than privatization. Privatization is meaningless if you don't have the rule of law. What does it mean to privatize if you do not have security of property, if you can't use your property as you want to?

Others expanded on Friedman's rationalization, arguing that without this "rule of law" to protect their private property, the new private owners of Russia's industries were incentivized to plunder their companies as quickly as possible for fear that the state would steal their companies back. Of course, all this rationalizing was undermined by fact that Russia's oligarchs stole their companies in the first place, and thieves do tend to steal what they've stolen. But never mind—the libertarian ideology was salvaged, as Russia's privatization experiment was declared "not a real free-market" without Friedrich Hayek's "rule of law" in place.

The reason I'm bringing this up now is because over the past month, one of America's most rapacious oligarchs, Aubrey McClendon, was exposed by Reuters for plundering Chesapeake Energy, the second-largest natural gas producer in the country after Exxon-Mobil. McClendon, co-founder, CEO and until a few weeks ago Chairman of Chesapeake, was discovered running a hedge fund inside of Chesapeake, personally profiting on the side from large trading positions that his public company Chesapeake took in the gas and oil markets.

Reuters also discovered that McClendon took small personal stakes in natural gas wells bought by Chesapeake, then borrowed against the wells' reserves from the same banks that Chesapeake borrowed from—basically, the banks kicked back sweet lending deals to McClendon on the side as McClendon arranged less-than-sweet loans to his publicly-owned company, Chesapeake, kicking profits from Chesapeake's shareholders and employees' pockets into the banks and into Aubrey's accounts.

The loser in all this, as always: Employees, retirees, and shareholders. As Reuters reported, Chespeake is one of a small handful of companies whose employee 401k retirement packages consist mostly of Chesapeake stock, and the company requires employees to hold on to their stock for the maximum amount of time allowed by law:

Thousands of Chesapeake workers have retirement portfolios that are heavily invested in Chesapeake stock, which has declined sharply following revelations about Chief Executive Aubrey K. McClendon's business dealings.
But while retail and institutional investors have sold the stock, employees don't always have that option.

It's not the first time McClendon has been caught plundering Chesapeake at the expense of shareholders, pension fund investors and employees: In 2008, McClendon bet and lost about $2 billion worth of Chesapeake Energy stock he owned—94% of Aubrey's personal stake in Chesapeake– on a margin call when natural gas prices collapsed. Aubrey bet that natural gas prices would continue soaring, you see.

But like his peers in the oligarchy class, Aubrey's loss became everyone but Aubrey's loss: He was awarded a "CEO bailout" by his board of directors, who honored Aubrey with a $75 million "bonus" to bring his total pay in 2008 to $112 million, making Aubrey McClendon the highest-paid CEO in Corporate America that year. Even though Chesapeake's earnings dropped in half, and its stock fell 60%, wiping out up to $33 billion in shareholder wealth.

Now, we're learning, Aubrey was profiting in other ways off of Chesapeake that same year.

There is so much more to hate about Aubrey McClendon than this—the millions McClendon poured into Gary Bauer's gay-bashing outfit "Americans United To Preserve Marriage" and the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the role McClendon and his Whirlpool heiress wife played in stealing waterfront land from Benton Harbor, an African-American slum and the poorest city in Michigan, in order to expand an exclusive golf course country club for residents of St. Josephs, where McClendon owns several plots of land. McClendon's wife, Katie, is from St. Joseph's; so is Katie's cousin, Fred Upton, the Republican Congressman from St. Joseph's. Aubrey and his wife are what pass for royalty (sans noblesse oblige) these days: Katie from the Whirpool fortune, Aubrey an heir to the Kerr-McGee fortune. (If you've seen the movie Silkwood, you might remember Kerr-McGee as the company that iced the labor union activist played by Meryl Streep.)

This is just one of many stories about how publicly-traded companies have been and can be transformed into elaborate schemes to loot and steal from the public and enrich a tiny handful of oligarchs. We saw this in the 1980s when Reagan deregulated the Savings & Loans, which were quickly transformed into a means of looting, fraud and plunder; we saw it in the 2000s, after the de-regulation of the financial sector.

The problem goes much deeper than Milton Friedman's "rule of law" fetish. "Rule of law" is just another red herring diversion to provide cover for continued oligarchy plunder, failure and barbarism. The problem is systemic, and more importantly, ideological. We still operate under the same neoliberal/libertarian major premises we inherited from the Hayek-Mises-Friedman era, an ideology that considers notions like "the public good" to be quaint delusions at best—as opposed to today's still-dominant, still-standing foundational ideology, which says that freedom equals the ruthless pursuit of individual self-interest, the unlimited acquisition of private property and wealth, framed within a cold, dystopian "rule of law."

That is where the problem starts. That is why, every week, I could tell another story about another Aubrey McClendon or Dick Parsons, and it will never end until the ideology that enables them is buried.

Bij een toenemend aantal journalisten komt het woord ‘doodzwijgen’ niet in het woordenboek voor. Zij plaatsen het nieuws dat zich aandient kritiekloos, zonder zich af te vragen of de ‘boodschap’ wel nieuwswaarde heeft. Dit leidt er toe dat er steeds meer onzin te lezen, te zien en te horen is in de media. PVV-leider Geert Wilders hoeft maar een tweet te versturen of het wordt tot voorpagina nieuws gebombardeerd, constateert René Leget.'

Ik citeer uit Leget's opiniestuk: 'Het zou mooi zijn als de journalistiek weer zelf bepaalt wat nieuws is...'

Het is geschreven door 'Leget,' in zijn hoedanigheid als 'hoofdredacteur van www.twenteactueel.nl en werkte eerder als verslaggever voor diverse dagbladen als Rijn en Gouwe en de Courant Nieuws van de Dag.'

Duidelijk is dat René Leget weinig tot niets over zijn eigen vak heeft gelezen. In elk geval geen kritische beschouwingen zoals die met de regelmaat van de klok al meer dan een eeuw in de angelsaksische wereld verschijnen.

René, als journalisten zouden bepalen wat 'nieuws' is dan zouden ze ontslagen worden. Westerse journalisten behorend tot de 'vrije pers' dienen de belangen van de macht of worden gemarginaliseerd.

Maar laat je door de titel niet misleiden, want in dit pleidooi betekent "kritisch" juist (meer) "doodzwijgen".

'Waar is kritische journalist gebleven?

Waar is de kritische journalist gebleven? Deze vraag is terecht als je avond na avond Henk Bleker ziet aanschuiven in talkprogramma’s op televisie. Zelfs de premier en de Koningin krijgen niet zo veel publiciteit als de Groningse ponyfokker.

Deze schrijnende voorbeelden maken duidelijk dat de journalistiek onvoldoende kritisch vermogen aan de dag legt. Als deze tendens doorzet, dan zullen de lezers en kijkers massaal gaan afhaken, want zij zitten niet te wachten op ‘reclamespots’ en gratis propaganda voor mensen die belang hebben bij publiciteit.

Als het goed is dan bepaalt de journalist nog altijd wat er wordt gepubliceerd. Zodra dat niet meer het geval is dan krijg je onfrisse toestanden. Ik moet er niet aan denken: presentatoren die hun microfoon uit handen geven en journalisten die zichzelf degraderen tot ‘doorgeefluik’ van zogenaamd nieuws.

Het wordt hoog tijd voor een bezinning. Welk nieuws plaatsen we wel en wat niet? Dat moet iedere dag het thema zijn dat prominent aan de orde komt op de redactievergadering. Van het naar de prullenbak verwijzen van persberichten gaat een belangrijke signaalwerking uit.

Wie weet dat hij niet met onzin op de proppen moet komen, neemt in het vervolg alleen pas contact met de redactie op als er echt iets te melden is. Dat is in het belang van de kwaliteit van de nieuwsvoorziening.

Het zou mooi zijn als de journalistiek weer zelf bepaalt wat nieuws is. Dat is alleen mogelijk als in de praktijk wordt gebracht wat Van Dale verstaat onder ‘doodzwijgen’, namelijk: door te zwijgen het bestaan verbergen van……..

Wat is er mis mee om te zeggen, bedankt voor het persbericht, maar we doen er niets mee, omdat het iets toevoegt aan wat we al wisten. Ik durf de stelling aan dat dit vroeger meer gebeurde dan tegenwoordig. Dat komt waarschijnlijk door het grote aantal media. De beschikte ruimte moet toch worden gevuld, zo luidt de redenatie.

Dat is natuurlijk een verkeerd uitgangspunt, want niet de kwantiteit maar de kwaliteit dient bij de beoordeling en selectie van het nieuws de doorslag te geven.

Alles staat of valt bij de eindredactie en de kwaliteit van de besluitvorming in de redactievergadering. Durven we als journalisten onder elkaar en tegen elkaar kritisch te zijn? Ve kool en de geit worden dus gespaard.

Eind- en hoofdredacteuren zullen het kritische vermogen, voor zover dat niet meer aanwezig is, moeten herstellen. De lezers hebben er recht op om goed voorgelicht te worden over wat er in de maatschappij gebeurt. Dat vergt een mentaliteitsverandering op redacties. De laatste jaren is er te veel aandacht besteed aan de vormgeving, de layout. Hoewel het oog ook wil, behoort het toch om de inhoud te gaan.

Vandaar deze oproep aan de journalistiek om veel meer aan doodzwijgen te gaan doen. Gooi vaker persberichten weg! Deze kritische houding leidt tot meer respect voor de journalistiek. Dat is nooit weg in een tijd dat de uitgeverijen te kampen hebben met minder lezen en een advertentievolume dat fors onder druk staat.

Wat Rene Leget doet is pleiten voor het versterken van de ivoren toren. De journalist als filter van de waarheid.

Rene, kijk eens in je (ongetwijfeld papieren) agenda naar het jaartal. Daar staat 2012. Sociale media bepalen wat er gebeurt. Media zijn niet meer het filter van wat wel en niet belangrijk is, dat is het publiek zelf. Klim eens uit je ivoren toren en maak eens kennis met je lezers. Dan zul je merken dat het tijd is om de roest van je ouderwetse denkbeelden los te bikkelen.

Op de site waar dhr. Leget hoofdredacteur staat een artikel waarin hulpverleners zich zouden beklagen over een reclamestunt van C1000 (drie kranten bier voor de prijs van 2). Alleen staat er NERGENS in het artikel welke hulpverleners dat zeggen. Geen naam, geen bron. Niets. Is het het resultaat van gedegen overleg op de redactie en met de hoofdredactie?

Op de site waar dhr. Leget hoofdredacteur staat een artikel waarin hulpverleners zich zouden beklagen over een reclamestunt van C1000 (drie kranten bier voor de prijs van 2). Alleen staat er NERGENS in het artikel welke hulpverleners dat zeggen. Geen naam, geen bron. Niets. Is dat het resultaat van gedegen overleg op de redactie en met de hoofdredactie?

Ik kan mij voorstellen dat als een fietser op de hoek van de straat zijn enkel verzwikt dit geen nieuwswaarde heeft voor een blad als Privé. Maar kennelijk vinden de lezers de uitspraken van Geert Wilders wel nieuwswaarde, gezien ook het aantal Nederlanders dat op zijn partij gestemd heeft. Om dan maar meteen van ‘onzin’ en van geen ‘kritische journalisten’ te spreken vind ik nogal te kort door de bocht.

Laat iedere journalist zijn politieke voorkeur bekend maken, zoals in de VS gebruikelijk is. Dan kunnen wij zelf beoordelen welk nieuws verzwegen wordt en waarom. In het proefschrift van Mark Deuze uit 2002 las ik dat journalisten bijna zonder uitzondering links (32 procent) of links van het midden (47 procent) stemmen. De middenpartijen krijgen steun van slechts 20 procent van de journalisten. Hoeveel procent stemde rechts volgens dit onderzoek? 1 procent.
Deze cijfers (ik denk niet dat dit in tien jaar tijd veel is veranderd) verklaren waarom er zo weinig reële verslaggeving is over bijvoorbeeld de gevolgen van het gevoerde immigratiebeleid of de gevolgen van de te hoge staatsschuld.

Kan @Bernadette de Wit het goede voorbeeld geven en haar landelijke, provinciale en locale politieke stemgedrag van de afgelopen tien jaar even met het VillaMedia lezerspubliek delen, want dan wordt ons - volgens haar kennelijke redeneertrant tenminste - wellicht in no-time duidelijk, wat haar achterliggende politieke motief is, om deze stellingen over “DE” NL journalisten hier te deponeren.

2. Kan @Bernadette de Wit haar stelling, “ik denk niet dat dit [meeste journalisten stemmen links of centrum-links] in tien jaar tijd veel is veranderd” misschien nog even deugdelijk wetenschappelijk substantiëren, want de categorie “ik denk” argumentatie grenst nu eenmaal gevaarlijk dicht aan de categorie “ik wensdenk” argumentatie.

Kan @Bernadette de Wit het VillaMedia publiek tevens even uitleggen, waarom een journalist, die {volgens haar criteria) niet rechts stemt in de landelijke, provinciale en/of locale politiek, niet heel goed in staat zou zijn, om in haar of zijn hoedanigheid van journalistieke vakman/vakvrouw, op objectieve, proportionele en evenwichtige wijze, een als rechts te bestempelen onderwerp over het journalistieke voetlicht te brengen.

a. “er zo weinig reële verslaggeving” is geweest “over bijvoorbeeld de gevolgen van het gevoerde immigratiebeleid of de gevolgen van de te hoge staatsschuld” en indien dat al zo zou zijn, of

b. een aantoonbaar wetenschappelijk verband bestaat tussen de gesuggereerde wijze van verslaggeving en het gevoerde politiek bestuurlijke beleid inzake “immigratie” en/of “de te hoge staatsschuld” en “de gevolgen” daarvan (waarop precies en over welke specifieke periodes van verslaggeving en parallelle beleidsvorming spreken wij in dit verband eigenlijk?)

Gevalletje ‘klok en klepel’. Laat ik voorop stellen dat ik het er helemaal mee eens ben dat het aan een journalist is om te bepalen wat nieuws is. De constatering en onderbouwing van Leget is echter onjuist.

Enerzijds legt Leget het probleem bij de journalist (ze zijn onvoldoende kritisch), anderzijds constateert hij dat het toch niet meer de journalist is die het nieuws bepaalt.

Aan het daadwerkelijke probleem gaat Leget voorbij. Nieuws is handel, zoals ik onder andere op de Nieuwe Reporter schreef: “Media realiseren zich meer en meer dat nieuws een commercieel product is. Wie zijn nieuws niet weet te verkopen, moet bezuinigen.”

Kortom: de journalistiek wíl bepaalde berichten helemaal niet weggooien. En een kritische houding leidt niet tot meer lezers en advertentie-inkomsten, zoals Leget suggereert. Het moge duidelijk zijn dat serieuze media het zwaarder hebben dan infotainmentmedia.

Wat dat betreft sluit ik mij aan bij P. Pijlstra: “Klim eens uit je ivoren toren en maak eens kennis met je lezers.”

De werkers in Nederland, wie anders? De werker, die moet betalen om bij zijn werk te komen. Die werkt met een minutenwerktabel, die geen opslag krijgt, ontslagen wordt als hij te oud wordt en bij ziekte van een neparts hoort wanneer hij weer gezond is. De werker en ook de bijstandsmoeder die hun kinderen, die maar één keer jong zijn, veel leuke dingen moeten ontzeggen wegens geldgebrek.

Om stakingen van deze werkers te voorkomen, worden de grote vakbonden versnipperd in kleine bondjes die niets met elkaar te maken hebben.

De politici hebben een goed salaris, wat zij zelf kunnen vaststellen. Onkostenvergoedingen, later erebaantjes en commissariaten. Uitbuiters zijn het.

Stem straks niet op zo'n aardige kletsmajoor, maar denk aan uw eigenbelang en aan uw kinderen. Stem niet op de 'lentekameraden'.

For a supposed terrorist, Ayman Abu Aita is remarkably easy to find. It takes one phone call to set up a meeting with the man described in the hit movie Brüno as a "terrorist group leader".

He sits alone at a long, white table in the gardens of the Everest hotel and restaurant in Beit Jala, a mountain village near Bethlehem. This, he says, is the "secret location" where he met Brüno, played by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen.

Popular with tourists, the restaurant sits next to an Israeli military compound, not far from the all-seeing watchtowers of the winding separation wall.

"How could he say this about me?" asks Abu Aita. "He lied from the beginning and he is still lying now."

Abu Aita, 44, from Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem, is described in the film Brüno as a member of al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, the armed wing of the Fatah movement. Now Abu Aita plans to sue for defamation, while Baron Cohen has reportedly received threats from the brigade.

Baron Cohen's film protagonist Brüno is a gay fashion-obsessed Austrian TV host who, in a short clip featuring Abu Aita, asks to be kidnapped in a bid to get famous. He thinks that Palestinian terrorists are the "best guys" for the job, because "al-Qaida are so 2001".

Promoting the film recently on the David Letterman talkshow in the US, Baron Cohen explained that finding a "terrorist" to interview for the movie took several months and some help from a CIA contact. He described the secular Martyrs Brigades, most of whom signed an amnesty deal with Israel in 2007, as "the number one suicide bombers out there".

Abu Aita said: "My file is clear with the Americans. I was in the states twice and I travel all the time." He is a Christian Fatah representative – of the movement's political wing, he stresses – for Bethlehem district. He is also a member of the board of the Holy Land trust, a non-profit organisation that works on Palestinian community-building. "I am a non-violent activist and I am not ashamed of that," he says.

The interview with Baron Cohen was set up via Awni Jubran, a journalist for the Palestinian news agency, PNN, who received a call from the film's producer. "My friend Awni told me they wanted a Palestinian campaigner to talk about the situation for a documentary, to show young people what life is like in the Palestinian territories," says Abu Aita.

He met Baron Cohen one week later, accompanied by Jubran and Sami Awad, founder of the Holy Land trust – although Baron Cohen described the two to Letterman as bodyguards for "the terrorist". Abu Aita says that Brüno's crew chose the location, which is under total Israeli control – and which appears in the film as Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp, in Lebanon.

"We trust people and we never refuse an opportunity to discuss the Palestinian cause," he says.

"We went upstairs to one of the hotel rooms and talked about the Palestinian situation for over two hours," says Abu Aita, adding that Brüno seemed serious – although his knowledge was limited.

At the very end of the discussion, Baron Cohen asked a couple of questions about al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden, which Abu Aita considered oddly out of place and which he asked the translator to repeat.

Then, when Brüno asked to be kidnapped, Abu Aita says that his actual reply was edited out. "I was angered by the question," says Abu Aita. "I said, first of all I'm not a terrorist. Second, you are a guest here, so I must take care of you until you leave my country."

Abu Aita forgot all about the interview until the the film came out and he started to receive countless calls from outraged Palestinians.

"They ask how I could allow myself to be laughed at in this way, how I could agree to it," he says. "They are angry that I have embarrassed the Palestinian people, because we are being presented in this false, disgusting way."

Abu Aita is standing in the Palestinian parliamentary elections slated for January 2010, and opposition candidates are already using this incident to discredit him. He says it is also damaging for him to appear in a gay film, which features nudity and graphic sex scenes. "With our culture and our heritage we refuse such things," says Abu Aita.

He is well known in the area and several people testify to his good character and good sense of humour. "Brüno can make jokes about anything he wants, but this is not a joke," says Abu Aita. "Calling me a terrorist is not funny – it is lying."

Discussing his plans to sue, the Fatah official says he did not sign release forms for the footage of him which appeared in the film. His lawyer, a Palestinian-Israeli from Nazareth, says that such cases can result in million dollar compensation payouts in the US.

A spokesman for Baron Cohen declined to comment.'

Sacha Baron Cohen: a buffoonish ideologue, at Israel’s service

Sacha Baron Cohen’s commitment to Zionism comes out in his characters.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest film The Dictator has led to the praise typical of movie reviewers for corporate publications. Baron Cohen, according to most of these reviewers, is something of a maverick: an iconoclastic outsider, an unorthodox entertainer, an erstwhile rebel, a genius provocateur. None of these superlatives is accurate.

What is Baron Cohen, then? Lots of descriptors work: a gifted role-player, an excellent self-promoter, a potty-mouthed prankster, a religious zealot, a white male who uses his privileges of race and gender to exploit people who cannot access those privileges.

There is one descriptor that is too infrequently applied to him: Zionist shill. Plenty of writers have noted Baron Cohen’s ardent Zionism, but few have suggested that his Zionism should cast him in a negative light (“Before ‘The Dictator’ and ‘Borat’, friends recall, Sacha Baron Cohen was a very nerdy, very funny, Israel-oriented guy,” The Times of Israel, 11 May 2012). Even fewer have examined how that Zionism visibly influences his thematic choices and public role-playing.

His commitment to Zionism is troublesome for numerous reasons: it supports the historical and current dispossession of Palestinians, situates him as an advocate of militaristic state power, calls into question his ethical commitments, and places him in Hollywood’s safest political space, that of fealty to Israel, a space in which the title of maverick loses all significant meaning.

It isn’t difficult to find evidence of Baron Cohen’s politics in his invented characters. While there are obvious iterations of Zionism in the dictator, Shabazz Aladeen, tomfoolery on behalf of Israel is also evident in earlier characters Brüno and Borat. Through both characters, Baron Cohen engaged in questionable behavior, what can accurately be called outright exploitation.

With Borat, for example, Baron Cohen named an actual country, Kazakhstan, when the concept behind that movie could have accomplished the same comic purpose with a made-up nation. Even with a made-up nation, however, Borat’s appearance as a stupid, swarthy, sexist Muslim conflated the Third World with pre-modern sensibilities, a feat that could be accomplished only through an unspoken juxtaposition of whiteness and modernity.

Even worse, in showing Borat’s origin at the start of the movie, Baron Cohen ditched the sound stage in favor of a real village in Romania, Glod, whose residents were appalled to learn that the documentary they thought Baron Cohen was filming turned out to be a degrading parody, leaving the villagers divided and infuriated (“We all hate Borat: the poor Romanian villagers humiliated by Sacha Baron Cohen’s spoof documentary,” The Daily Mail, 17 October 2008) . Those who participated were paid a tiny sum for their trouble; Borat grossed more than $260 million.

(Romania, Kazakhstan, what’s the difference, right? If the assumption from which Baron Cohen worked — that to most Americans, Eastern Europe and Central Asia are little more than a swath of backward foreign people — then it only reinforces the malice of naming actual countries and shooting on location, for the point had already been made before Baron Cohen decided to humiliate an entire village.)

Mean-spirited

With Brüno, Baron Cohen was even more mean-spirited. He searched out a “terrorist” for the flamboyant Brüno to offend. Baron Cohen’s search took him, of course, to the West Bank, where he again used a phony pretext to lure an unsuspecting Palestinian, Ayman Abu Aita, into an interview whose purpose was quite different than what Abu Aita was led to believe.

Since the film’s release, Abu Aita has dealt with the vitriol of his neighbors and colleagues who feel he humiliated them through his participation in Brüno’s spectacle (“The non-profit worker from Bethlehem who was branded a terrorist by Brüno,” The Guardian, 31 July 2009). Abu Aita wasn’t paid for his time; Brüno grossed $139 million. (In my book Israel’s Dead Soul I discuss this episode at length.)

Given the material exploitation of people in Romania and Palestine, these characters aren’t just harmless fun, after all.

Shabazz Aladeen — a name that manages to parody Arab and African American cultures — isn’t meant to be harmless. As with other characters, Baron Cohen has made numerous public appearances in character. His favorite tactic with Aladeen is to complain about the Zionists in Hollywood who refuse to grant him awards (“Sacha Baron Cohen to attend Oscars, claims victory over ‘Zionist snakes in Hollywood’,”Haaretz, 25 February 2012). Out of character, Baron Cohen explained to Howard Stern, another ardent Zionist, that “all these dictators blame everything on the Zionists. It’s a great scapegoat” (“Sacha Baron Cohen to Howard Stern: you inspired me,” Jewish Journal, 8 May 2012).

Disturbing connection

There is a disturbing connection to be made between Baron Cohen’s Zionist politics and his willingness to exploit real communities and to bastardize ethnic imagery. Zionism, an ideology that can accommodate liberal and humanistic discourses, cannot be practiced without a concomitant abrogation of the rights of those who are not Jewish, a reality that becomes even more severe when we consider that the vast majority of Palestine’s indigenous inhabitants are Muslim and Christian.

If his ethnic typologies are unoriginal, then his dictator’s complaints about Hollywood Zionists are completely banal. It is a grand tradition among pro-Israel commentators to attribute Arab dislike of Israel to everything but the inequitable practices of Zionism.

As Aladeen indicates, complaining about Zionism is an irrational Arab pastime, one they are brainwashed into by hideous dictators (whose power, of course, has nothing to do with Israeli, European and American meddling); Arab stupidity is so pervasive it totally ignores Israel’s greatness and the many benefits Israel could provide to Arabs if only they were smart enough to listen. Arabs passively accept their destiny. They are programmed culturally to submit to authority. They are not equipped with the intellectual gifts necessary for democratic modernity. There is nothing to do but colonize them.

The conflation of Zionism with proper multicultural modernity has a long history in American film, particularly in movies that endeavor to oppose racism. In Hollywood’s anti-racism, criticism of Israel falls into the same category as white supremacy, a point illustrated in American History X when one character holding a camcorder implores another to share some of the things he has learned about race in America.

After the usual complaints about lazy minorities and declining Western values, the speaker rants, “And I hate Tabatha Soren and all her Zionist MTV fucking pigs telling us we should all get along.” American History X uses the scene to make a point about anti-Zionist activists, suggesting that they are not very different than neo-Nazis. The speaker even mispronounces “Zionist” in case viewers are unclear that cultured, educated people do not find Zionism distasteful. The proper democratic citizen does not contest Zionism; doing so puts him or her in the company of obese, unkempt skinheads.

Baron Cohen reinvigorates this dubious history when his dictator travels the country ranting about Zionists. Who but a jackass would keep company with the cartoonish Shabazz Aladeen?

The first rule of good satire is to ridicule sites of entrenched power, not to reinforce them. Racial satire is even trickier, for many a would-be satirist has used the cover of humor to buttress racist paradigms, something Baron Cohen does when he satirizes groups of people that are elsewhere victims of his troublesome politics. That’s the difference between Dave Chapelle, a brilliant satirist and stand-up comedian, and Baron Cohen, a buffoonish ideologue.

Sacha Baron Cohen is not a maverick. He is an apparatchik of Hollywood’s most profitable brand.

Boycotting Israeli apartheid is both moral and necessary

Of course, if you’re a self-described Leftist Zionist like Philip Mendes in Australia you write for Murdoch’s Australian and tell Palestinians to grow up and embrace their occupiers:

The international boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against Israel is a by-product of the second Palestinian intifada and the collapse of the Oslo peace process. It is essentially war by other means – a non-violent, but nevertheless extremist strategy – allied with the practice of suicide bombings and rocket attacks, and intended to coerce Israel into surrendering to Palestinian demands.
The first major manifestations of the BDS occurred in April and May 2002 when academics in Europe and Australia urged a boycott of Israeli academics and academic institutions.
The campaign was formalised in July 2004 when 60 Palestinian academic and other non-government organisations called for an academic and cultural boycott of Israel. It has three key aims: to end the Israeli occupation of lands occupied in the 1967 war, including East Jerusalem, and dismantle the security barrier; to achieve equality for the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel; and to support the rights of Palestinian refugees, including their demand for a right of return to Israel as implied by UN Resolution 194.
The leading Palestinian BDS advocate, Omar Barghouti, in his 2011 book BDS: the Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights, opposes a bi-national state based on parity between the two national groups. He returns to the long-dated Palestine Liberation Organisation proposal for a secular democratic state that recognises Jews only as a religious, not national, community.
The BDS campaign has had limited success. Its major drawback is that it offers no strategy for promoting Israeli-Palestinian peace and reconciliation. Rather, it is a negative and one-sided campaign aimed at demonising Israeli Jews irrespective of their political views on the Palestinian question.
The obvious answer to the BDS is a two-state solution. The Israeli government says it wants to negotiate a two-state solution, and is waiting for a suitable Palestinian partner willing to accommodate Israeli security requirements.

Back in the real world, away from Melbourne academia where being loved by the Zionist community is your highest priority, Gideon Levy explains inHaaretz why BDS is vital:

I don’t buy merchandise that comes from the settlements and I never will. To my way of thinking, those are stolen goods and, like any other goods that have been stolen, I try not to buy them. Now perhaps the South Africans and the Danes also will not buy them; meanwhile their governments have merely requested that products from the settlements be marked so as not to deceive their customers. Just as there was no need in the past to label merchandise from the British colonies as British products, so there is no need to mark products from Israel’s colonies as Israeli. Anyone who wants to support the Israeli colonial enterprise can buy them; those who are opposed can boycott them. As simple as that, and as necessary.
Israel, which boycotts Turkey’s beaches and Hamas, should have been the first to understand that. Instead we have heard heart-rending cries and angry rebukes. Not yet to the Danes, who are nice, but to the South Africans, who are less nice in our eyes. The decision was labeled “a step with racist characteristics” by the Foreign Ministry spokesman, referring to the country that waged the most courageous war against racism in the history of mankind.
Yes, the new South Africa can teach Israel a lesson in the war against racism; and yes, Israel can teach the world a lesson in racism. It has once again been proven that Israel’s chutzpah knows no bounds: Israel, of all countries, accuses South Africa, of all countries, of being racist. Is there anything more ridiculous?
It was not by chance that the South African ambassador to Israel, Ismail Coovadia, seemed both amused and embarrassed at a reception for Cameroon’s independence day, when the foreign ministry launched a ridiculous search for him, according to reports, after he failed to respond to its summons for what was described in advance as a rebuke. It is not difficult to imagine how many such reprimands Israeli ambassadors in different parts of the world deserve to be summoned to, if labeling produce from the settlements is a reason for rebuke and accusations of racism on the part of the Israeli government, which is so purely non-racist.
Labeling products from the settlements should have been an obvious move a long time ago, as a guide to the intelligent and involved consumer. A boycott of settlement products should also have taken place a long time ago, as a compass for law-abiding citizens. We are not referring only to a political or moral position; this is a question of upholding international law. A product produced in the settlements is an illegal product, just like the settlements themselves. Just as there is a growing public of consumers in the world who will not buy products made in sweatshops in southeast Asia nor “blood diamonds” from Africa because of their source and the conditions under which they are produced, so it can be anticipated that there are consumers who will boycott products produced in occupied territory through the exploitation of cheap Palestinian manpower whose opportunities to work are in the settlements.
The self-righteous, sanctimonious protests of Israeli factory-owners and farmers in the occupied territories who say they care so much about their Palestinian workers, who claim a boycott could endanger their employees’ sources of income, are a cynical attempt to mislead people. Had the settlements and the occupying forces been removed, and the lands on which these enterprises arose been returned to their owners, they would have had much more dignified sources of income.
A boycott of goods from the settlements is a justified boycott, and there is no other way to define it. Labeling these products is the minimum demand that every government in the world should make, as a service to its citizens.

De filmindustrie koos voor de Israelische versie van het conflict en portretteerde de Palestijnen als terroristen, als daders en niet als slachtoffers. Mensen zoals u en ik, zestigers, zijn opgegroeid met het beeld van Hollywood dat de Palestijnen terroristen zijn en niet een volk dat al vele jaren lijdt onder een bezetting en slachtoffer is van etnische zuiveringen. Die ééndimensionale beelden zijn een ramp. Het ontnemen van iemands menselijkheid, het brandmerken van een heel volk is levensgevaarlijk. In onze beeldcultuur worden Arabieren met beelden gedemoniseerd en we weten uit de geschiedenis dat het ontmenselijken aan het moorden vooraf gaat. Hollywood heeft de Arabieren vanaf het begin gecriminaliseerd, tot het absurde toe. Egyptenaren werden opgevoerd in de vorm van herlevende mummies die Amerikaanse vrouwen proberen te veroveren. In de jaren zeventig werden sjeiks afgebeeld als een bedreiging omdat ze met hun oliegeld de westerse samenlevingen begonnen te infiltreren. Ze kochten in Londen en de Verenigde Staten onroerend goed, de kreet was: “De Arabieren komen er aan,” terwijl iedere multimiljonair op aarde in de VS en Europa investeert. Maar omdat het Arabisch geld was, was het gekleurd en moest men bang zijn. Begin jaren negentig was er de Tweede Golfoorlog met alle voorafgaande propaganda om de strijd te rechtvaardigen. Ik herinner me nog levendig hoe een jonge vrouw uit Koeweit in het Amerikaanse Congres getuigde dat Irakese soldaten op de kraamafdeling van een ziekenhuis in Koeweit Stad baby’s uit hun couveuses trokken en op de grond smeten om ze daar te laten sterven. Geen enkele journalist, geen enkel Congreslid onderzocht destijds de identiteit van deze jonge vrouw. Was zij echt in Koeweit geweest? Had zij daadwerkelijk Irakese soldaten deze gruweldaden zien verrichten? Pas later ontdekte het publiek dat de officiële getuige de 15-jarige dochter was van de Koeweitse ambassadeur in de Verenigde Staten die speciaal hiervoor getraind was door het al eerder in opspraak geraakte Public Relations kantoor Hill & Knowlton. Alle betrokken journalisten en volksvertegenwoordigers gingen er blind vanuit dat zij de waarheid sprak. De pers en de politiek waren daartoe ook bereid. Ze vonden het kennelijk aannemelijk dat Arabieren dit doen. En dan hebben we natuurlijk in 2003 de invasie en bezetting van Irak. Het was niet moeilijk voor een groot deel van het Amerikaanse publiek het geweld te steunen, omdat al meer dan een eeuw de Arabieren in alle media, van stripverhalen tot romans, videospelletjes en persberichten, beschuldigd worden van het kwaad in de wereld en daarom afgebeeld worden als onze vijand.’

Uit Reel Bad Arabs: ‘Vooral de islam wordt uitgekozen voor een onrechtvaardige behandeling. De huidige beeldenmakers verbinden het islamitische geloof regelmatig met mannelijke suprematie, heilige oorlog, en terreurdaden, Arabische moslims worden geportretteerd als vijandige vreemde binnendringers, en als hitsige olie sjeiks die van plan zijn nucleaire wapens in te zetten. Wanneer moskeeën op het beeldscherm worden vertoond, dan draait de camera onvermijdelijk naar biddende Arabieren, en vervolgens naar het met kogels neermaaien van burgers. Dergelijke scenario’s zijn gebruikelijke kost.”

Jack Shaheen: ‘In de beginjaren van de filmindustrie was iedereen een zondebok die niet blank en protestants was, de Afrikanen waren barbaren in het oerwoud, de Indianen waren wilden uit de open prairies, de Chinezen leefden in hutten van modder, en de Mexicanen waren zuipschuiten die op straat hun roes uitsliepen. Al die groepen waren destijds perfecte types om de rol van bedreigende wilden te spelen, vooral tijdens de periode van de stomme film. Na 1945, toen de Verenigde Staten zich als een wereldmacht was gaan gedragen, leerden we geleidelijk aan deze vooroordelen af te zweren. Het zijn alleen nog de Arabieren die worden gediscrimineerd, gestereotypeerd en gestigmatiseerd. Zij vertegenwoordigen de ander, de buitenstaander, de bedreiging, het gevaar. Het stigmatiseren versterkt ook de behoefte van sommige westerlingen om zich superieur te voelen aan anderen. Wanneer we ons niet langer meer als beter mogen beschouwen dan Aziaten, joden, Latino’s of zwarten, dan kunnen we ons tenminste nog superieur voelen aan die verachtelijke Arabieren. Bovendien moet iemand de rol van de slechterik spelen, zoals Sidney Furie verklaarde, de scenarioschrijver van Iron Eagle. “En dus creëer je er één… een aanvaardbare slechterik. Iemand moet het kwaad vertegenwoordigen.” En die iemand is dus de Arabier, zoals het vroeger de jood was. Een van de producenten gaf als verklaring “Jack, sommigen van ons willen geen goede Arabieren afbeelden, zelfs niet goede Arabische Amerikanen, omdat we dan als pro-Arabisch worden bestempeld.” Op dit alles wordt ingespeeld door de westerse berichtgeving van het Israelisch-Arabisch conflict. Waren de joden in Israel en de Palestijnen tot een vergelijk gekomen en was er vrede geweest dan zou de filmindustrie de Arabieren niet zo negatief afbeelden als nu het geval is. Politiek speelt een sleutelrol in dit hele ontmenselijkingsproces. Daarnaast voeden christelijke fundamentalisten de angst voor de islam. Zij winden zich al op over andere christenen die niet precies hetzelfde denken. Nu in deze tijd van globalisering de moslims net als alle andere groepen verspreid over de wereld raken, zien ze hen als bedreigend. De christelijke fundamentalisten begrijpen de islam niet en willen die ook niet begrijpen. Ze hebben hun eigen benarde visie van de wereld en alles dat daarin niet past, wordt onmiddellijk als vijandig beschouwd. Daar komt nog een zekere jaloezie bij over het feit dat de Arabische wereld nog een gemeenschap van mensen lijkt, bijeengehouden door een traditioneel mensbeeld, door een bepaalde geborgenheid, warmte, gastvrijheid, vriendelijkheid en een duidelijk decorum. Iedere buitenstaander die de regio bezoekt valt dat onmiddellijk op zodra ze met de gewone mensen in contact komen. Die gedeeltelijk nog organische wereld met zijn hechte familiebanden wordt doorgaans niet in films en nieuwsverslagen belicht, maar zodra Amerikanen het merken, worden ze herinnerd aan hun eigen jeugd toen diezelfde samenhang nog in de Verenigde Staten bestond. Voor de kolonisten van de vorige eeuw betekende de familie alles, en de Arabieren bezitten die familiecultuur nog. En tenslotte moeten we niet vergeten dat de Arabieren op de rijkste olievoorraden ter wereld zitten, en almaar rijker lijken te worden van ons geld, terwijl dit in de praktijk helemaal niet waar is, de meeste mensen zijn er arm. In dat gevoel zit natuurlijk een racistisch element, want we zouden niet zo snel een blank, christelijke Europees volk met olie, zoals de Noren, net zo criminaliseren als we met de Arabieren doen. De oliemaatschappijen maken momenteel recordwinsten, en geen enkel serieus debat bestaat hierover in de media, maar als de Arabieren al dit geld zouden opstrijken dan zou er een geweldig publiek kabaal ontstaan en zouden er demonstraties volgen. Daarentegen mogen onze eigen oliemaatschappijen doen wat ze willen. En dit complex van factoren wordt nog eens versterkt door de Israelische propaganda, die buitengewoon effectief is.’

De vooraanstaande filmcriticus Anthony Lane van The New Yorker schreef in zijn weekblad: ‘Tenslotte is er het Arabische vraagstuk. De Arabische bevolking heeft altijd de meest wrange en onbegrijpelijke behandeling gekregen van Hollywood, maar met het einde van de Koude Oorlog is de stereotype zelfs nog verachtelijker geworden. In The Mummy (1999) kon ik nauwelijks geloven wat ik zag… Dus, ziehier een gezelschapsspelletje voor elke filmproducent die denkt aan een Midden Oosterse plaats van handeling; probeer de ene semitische groep te vervangen door een andere – joden in plaats van Arabieren – en luister DAN of er gelachen wordt.” En de prominente Amerikaanse politieke journalist William Greider schreef: “Joden werden veracht als exemplaren van het modernisme,” terwijl de huidige “Arabieren geportretteerd worden als de verspreiders van het primitivisme – beiden zouden onze behaaglijke moderne wereld bedreigen met hun vreemde gebruiken en begeertes.”

Jack Shaheen: ‘De twee grote machtscentra in de Verenigde Staten zijn Washington, waar de politiek wordt gemaakt, en Hollywood waar die politiek verkocht wordt. De massacultuur en de massamedia volgen de officiële politiek, net zolang tot er onder grote groepen mensen een bewustzijnsverandering optreedt en de commerciële media gedwongen zijn daarop te reageren, zoals tijdens de Vietnamoorlog gebeurde. Bijna alle journalisten en alle studio’s stonden achter de oorlog, en het handjevol tegenstanders werd als verraders beschouwd. Wat we nu zien is een eindeloze cyclus nieuws- en filmbeelden van Palestijnen die op een selectieve wijze worden gepresenteerd als terroristische daders en nooit, zoals in de werkelijkheid, als treurende slachtoffers van Israelische wreedheden. Al die beelden bijeen stellen het westerse beleid niet ter discussie maar versterken dat juist. Terwijl dus de laatste drie decennia vele raciale en etnische stereotypen van het filmdoek zijn verdwenen, blijft Hollywood’s stigmatisering van de Arabieren onverminderd doorgaan en is zelfs in omvang en kwaadaardigheid gegroeid. Twee decennialang heb ik de beeldvorming bestudeerd en geanalyseerd, ik heb meer dan 900 films gezien en de overgrote meerderheid ervan portretteert de Arabieren op een volstrekt verwrongen manier, die geen enkel verband houdt met de werkelijkheid. Zoals ik in mijn boek schrijf is er sprake van een systematische, permanente, wijd verspreide ontmenselijking van ongeveer 300 miljoen individuen die in 22 Arabische staten en elders wonen. Alleen al sinds 1970 heeft een hele industrie meer dan 350 films geproduceerd waarin de Arabieren worden afgebeeld als verraderlijke, gewelddadige extremisten. Het paradoxale is dat wijzelf de vijand worden wanneer we de ander zwart maken, wij verwonden onszelf wanneer we anderen haten en voor criminelen uitmaken. We ontnemen onszelf daarmee onze menselijkheid. Dat hebben we gezien onder andere bij de nazi’s en we zien het nu weer. Weet u, toen ik met mijn onderzoek van dit onderwerp begon, was over de Arabieren in de media nog niets geschreven, dus om de essentie van de stereotypering te begrijpen werd ik genoodzaakt om de beelden van andere groepen te bestuderen, joden, zwarten, Aziaten, Latino’s, vrouwen, homo’s, lesbiennes. En gaandeweg raakte ik steeds meer geïnteresseerd in de propagandabeelden van de jood, die vooral in tsaristisch Rusland en nazi Duitsland afgebeeld werden als lui die met hun bankgeld een economische bedreiging vormden, onbetrouwbare types met een God die wezenlijk anders zou zijn dan de christelijke God, en van wie de wellustige lippen en ogen het verlangen uitdrukten om arische maagden te bezitten. Die beelden vergeleek ik met de huidige cartoons over Arabieren en ontdekte dat ze hetzelfde zijn. Er bestaan zoveel overeenkomsten! Ook de Arabieren worden als een economische bedreiging afgebeeld, bij hen niet door bankgeld, maar door hun olie. Daarnaast zitten ze achter westerse vrouwen aan, en ook de religie speelt een voorname rol. Frappant zijn eveneens de gelaatstrekken. In de huidige cartoons heeft de Arabier de gelaatstrekken van de jood van vroeger, ze zijn identiek. Welke westerse cartoon men ook neemt, de Arabier lijkt sprekend op een verklede jood uit de antisemitische lectuur, verwijder het gewaad en de hoofddoek van de Arabier op die afbeeldingen, vervang die kledingstukken door een keppeltje en een zwarte jas en u ziet een jood, de gelaatstrekken zijn exact hetzelfde, het enige onderscheid is dat ze van een andere semitische tak zijn. De Shylock van vroeger is de huidige sjeik met zijn kromme neus, die voor de westerling het angstige beeld van de ander oproept. En laten we niet vergeten dat die stigmatiserende tekeningen hebben bijgedragen aan de totstandkoming van de holocaust. Daarvan zouden we bewust moeten zijn, en er iets tegen moeten ondernemen, maar dat is nog steeds niet gebeurd. Sommige mensen voelen zich ongemakkelijk wanneer ze mij deze analogie horen maken. Ze willen het niet horen, omdat ze daardoor aangesproken worden op hun eigen vooroordelen. Die zouden ze moeten afzweren en dat willen ze niet. Het beeld van een Arabier is een cliché, dat bijna alle journalisten gebruiken omdat zijn/haar collega’s het ook doen. Bovendien zitten die stereotypen zo diep in het bewustzijn. Ik ken een uitstekende Amerikaanse journalist, Donald Neff, die bureauchef in Israel was van Time Magazine. Zijn verslagen waren evenwichtig, maar toch verklaarde Neff dat hij al die tijd in Israel er niet in was geslaagd zich te bevrijden van de stereotypen van Arabieren. Zelfs wanneer hij Palestijnen zag lijden kon hij de clichés niet van zich afschudden, zo sterk waren de propagandabeelden geweest waaraan hij als jong mens blootgesteld was, zoals trouwens wij allemaal. Hij schreef letterlijk dat ‘’het nagenoeg onmogelijk was deze stereotypen te vernietigen. Dit bleef zelfs het geval ondanks het feit dat mijn ogen me elke dag opnieuw bevestigden dat ze spotprenten van de werkelijkheid waren. Toch kon ik de stereotypen niet volledig kwijtraken, niet in mijn eigen denken en nog veel minder in de verhalen die geschikt waren om afgedrukt te worden.” Voor Neff was het onmogelijk geweest om de Arabieren niet in een kwaad daglicht te stellen, terwijl hij zich toch zo bewust was van die neiging. Uit onafhankelijke onderzoeken blijkt dat vooroordelen de westerse berichtgeving kleuren. Ik las een paar dagen geleden in de International Herald Tribune een analyse van de impact die de Israelische inval in Libanon had op de Israelische regering. Absoluut niets werd bericht over de ingrijpende gevolgen van al dat geweld op de Libanese bevolking en de vernietiging van de infrastructuur in dat land. Geen woord over de onschuldige burgerslachtoffers, alsof er helemaal niemand om het leven was gekomen en geen woord over de onvoorstelbare schade. Voor de Herald Tribune was alleen de impact op de Israelische regering belangrijk. Als ik hoofdredacteur van een krant zou zijn en een verslaggever was met deze onevenwichtige rotzooi aangekomen dan zou ik het artikel, ongeacht de status van de journalist, direct hebben afgewezen. Het is maar de helft van de werkelijkheid en daardoor een groteske vertekening van de realiteit. Ik zou hem of haar hebben gevraagd waarom de Libanese doden en de Libanese verwoesting geen deel van het verhaal waren? De Herald Tribune verdiepte zich alleen in de belevingswereld van het Israelische kabinet dat de grote fout had begaan Libanon binnen te vallen. De rest was kennelijk oninteressant en dat is een onvergeeflijke omissie.’

Uit Reel Bad Arabs: ‘’Al in vroege tijden besefte Plato de macht van verzonnen verhalen. In zijn Republiek stelde hij: ‘Degenen die de verhalen vertellen heersen ook over de maatschappij.’ Als visuele lesprogramma’s blijven films, net als verzonnen verhalen, voor altijd bestaan. ‘Het wordt tijd ons te realiseren dat de ware mentoren van onze kinderen niet de onderwijzers zijn of universitaire hoogleraren maar filmmakers,’ schrijft Benjamin R. Barber in The Nation.”

Jack Shaheen: ‘In de massamedia functioneren woorden en beelden als wapens. Ze leren ons wie we moeten liefhebben en wie we moeten haten. Al heel lang vertellen ze ons dat we de Arabieren moeten haten. Maar op die manier werken we ons in een onmogelijke positie waarbij de kans op terrorisme almaar toeneemt in plaats van afneemt. Wij kunnen ons niet veroorloven onszelf en andere onschuldige mensen overal ter wereld in gevaar te brengen. Het polariseren en criminaliseren van anderen leidt onherroepelijk tot massaal geweld, die iedereen zal treffen. Het Westen moet ophouden het terrorisme te stimuleren zoals de Verenigde Staten heeft gedaan door Irak illegaal binnen te vallen. Als we op deze weg doorgaan zal onze situatie alleen maar verslechteren. Ik heb mijn land als militair gediend en was 3 jaar lang in Europa gestationeerd. In die tijd omarmden, respecteerden, bewonderden en koesterden de meeste mensen op aarde de Amerikaanse verworvenheden. Het grootste deel van mijn leven waren wij een voorbeeld voor de mensheid, maar dat is de afgelopen jaren dramatisch veranderd, niet alleen in het Midden Oosten, maar in de gehele wereld. Er is een grote vijandigheid ontstaan als gevolg van de buitenlandse politiek van Washington. Als wij als land het respect van de rest van de mensheid willen terug krijgen, wat veel belangrijker is dan de meeste Amerikanen beseffen, dan zullen we moeten veranderen. We zullen moeten beginnen met een drastische verandering in ons bewustzijn, we moeten onze beelden en vooroordelen fundamenteel ter discussie stellen. Lang voordat we in 1991 Irak aanvielen werden er veel films gemaakt waarin onze militairen Arabieren om zeep hielpen. Toen Washington besloot Irak aan te pakken waren de meeste Amerikanen en trouwens ook veel film- en tv-kijkers overal ter wereld volledig geconditioneerd. Na al die beelden leek er maar één alternatief te zijn: oorlog, de Arabieren waren de vijanden die verslagen moesten worden. En dat terwijl we vóór 1991 nooit in oorlog waren geweest met een Arabisch land. Hollywood heeft dus al die jaren een vijand gecreëerd met wie we nooit een gewapend conflict hadden. Volgens de Amerikaanse regering waren 19 Arabische moslim terroristen verantwoordelijk voor de aanslagen van 11 september. 15 van hen zouden uit Saoedi Arabië afkomstig zijn, en we verklaarden de oorlog aan Irak dat niets te maken heeft gehad met deze terreuraanslagen, zoals onlangs officieel is komen vast te staan. De Bush-regering heeft stelselmatig tegen de Amerikaanse bevolking gelogen en dat beleid werd vergemakkelijkt door de propagandistische beelden die onophoudelijk via films, tv-series, boeken, nieuwsberichten op het Amerikaanse publiek zijn afgevuurd. We krijgen voortdurend een stroom selectieve beelden van protesterende Arabieren te zien die in het openbaar ‘Allah O Akbar’ gillen en ‘Dood aan Amerika.’ Het zijn uiterst selectieve geweldsbeelden waarin Arabieren niet als gewone mensen worden afgebeeld maar als fanatieke irrationele vijanden van het Westen. De ongeveer 300 miljoen gewone Arabische burgers zijn volledig achter die propagandabeelden verdwenen, en onzichtbaar gemaakt. In hen zijn de westerse massamedia ook niet wezenlijk geïnteresseerd. Neem bijvoorbeeld het zogeheten Israelisch-Palestijns conflict, waarbij de Israelische overheid land van Palestijnen al vier decennia bezet en grote delen daarvan in beslag heeft genomen. Begin maart 2008 werden bij Israelische militaire aanvallen op bevolkingscentra rond de 120 Palestijnen gedood, van wie de helft burgers waren die niet aan de strijd deel hadden genomen, een kwart van de doden was nog kinder volgens de cijfers van de Israelische mensenrechtenorganisatie B’tselem. In de westerse media werd het aantal terloops gemeld, alsof het een te verwaarlozen detail was. Maar toen in diezelfde tijd een Palestijnse schutter 8 joodse studenten van een religieuze school doodschoot, was dit in het Westen het nieuws waarmee prominent geopend werd. In tegenstelling tot de Palestijnse nabestaanden van de slachtoffers zagen en hoorden we hier rouwende familieleden en vrienden, en vernamen we hun standpunten. Daardoor konden we met de getroffenen meeleven, maar met de Palestijnen mogen we kennelijk niet meeleven. Zij worden bij voorkeur negatief afgebeeld of genegeerd, dus geen interviews met hun rouwende vrienden en familie, geen beelden van hun leed, behalve wat wilde beelden van chaotische begrafenisstoeten, die voor westerlingen bedreigend overkomen. Wij krijgen hun visie niet genuanceerd te horen. We zien bijna nooit een evenwichtig verslag, bijna nooit. Waarom niet? Het leven van een joods Israëli is voor de westerse massamedia altijd waardevoller dan dat van een Arabier, en dat geldt zelfs voor het leven van kinderen. En vooral dat laatste is zo verbazingwekkend, want alle kinderen zijn onschuldig en bijzonder kwetsbaar. Waarom maken doorgaans fatsoenlijke westerse journalisten een onderscheid tussen een joods en een Palestijns gedood kind? Op wat voor een gedachte berust dit? Op wat voor een beeld? Vanwaar die inhumane discriminatie? En toch gebeurt het dagelijks, en wordt dit gedaan door mensen die zich rationeel, democratisch, verlicht, en humaan voelen, vaak ook zelf moeder of vader zijn. Zo krachtig zijn de stigmatiserende beelden waarmee de Europeanen en Amerikanen zijn opgevoed dat ze het leven van een joods kind waardevoller vinden dan dat van een Palestijns kind. Er bestaan voor hen waardevolle en onwaardige slachtoffers. En die ontmenselijking is griezelig.’

Uit Reel Bad Arabs: “Zelfs aan het begin van de negentiende eeuw wisten de bazen van grote studio’s dat films propagandisten konden dienen. Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog bevestigde Adolph Zukor, hoofd van Paramount Pictures dat films als propaganda kon dienen. Hij zei dat ze niet langer meer beschouwd moesten worden als simpel ‘vermaak en amusement.’ De oorlogsjaren zo verklaarde hij ‘hebben onomstotelijk het feit bewezen dat films als propagandamiddel, als kanaal om gedachten en meningen over te brengen, ongeëvenaard zijn vergeleken bij alle andere vormen van communicatie.’” De nieuwsanalisten van de Britse organisatie Media Lens, die stelselmatig het werk van de Engelstalige massamedia volgen omdat ze ervan overtuigd zijn dat ‘‘de grote dagbladen en televisiestations een zeer vertekend beeld van onze wereld geven’’ constateerden midden maart 2008 na een uitgebreid onderzoek dat “Israelische doden meer van belang zijn.” Ze citeerden de Britse premier Gordon Brown die na de aanslag in Jeruzalem had verklaard dat ‘’Dit een duidelijke poging is om een doodsklap te geven aan het vredesproces’’ en concludeerden: “Het contrast met de reacties op het doden van meer dan 120 Palestijnen, onder wie veel vrouwen en kinderen in het belegerde Gaza de week ervoor, kon nauwelijks opvallender zijn. Alleen al op één dag stierven 60 mensen in een regen van Israelische kogels afgevuurd door F-16 vliegtuigen, Apache helikopters, tanks, gepantserde bulldozers en grondtroepen. Van geen westerse leider werd de Israelische aanval op Gaza veroordeeld als ‘een duidelijke poging om een doodsklap te geven aan het vredeproces.’ Voor zover wij weten heeft geen enkele verslaggever gesuggereerd dat ‘het vredeproces’ nu ‘om zeep’ was geholpen. Geen schreeuwende koppen over Palestijnse baby’s die in hun bed waren ‘vermoord’. Kortom, aan de nieuwsberichten van het bloedbad in Gaza ontbrak zoals gebruikelijk de smartelijke details en toon die de berichtgeving vanuit Jeruzalem minder dan een week later kenmerkten.” En ook in Nederland reageerden de landelijke massamedia op dezelfde wijze. De dood van meer dan 120 Palestijnse doden werd terloops gemeld, de dood van acht joodse Israëli’s was voorpaginanieuws, met een uitloop naar de pagina buitenland. NOVA, voor wie de Palestijnse doden geen enkele rol speelden, besteedde twee achtereenvolgende avonden uitgebreid aandacht aan de dood van de yeshiva studenten. Uit verschillende onderzoeken blijkt telkens weer dat de westerse commerciële massamedia doorgaans zelfs niet eens een poging doen om onafhankelijk te lijken.

Jack Shaheen: ‘Hollywood geeft het stempel van goedkeuring aan de overheidspolitiek. Regeringen kunnen natuurlijk niet al te duidelijk in het openbaar stigmatiseren, dat doet Hollywood, want het is toch alleen maar een film, nietwaar? We kunnen stellen dat als gevolg van de beschadigende beelden en onze foute buitenlandse politiek veel onschuldige mensen om het leven komen. Een voorbeeld van hoe de geesten worden rijp gemaakt voor geweld tegen burgers is de film Rules of Engagement van William Friedkin. Het is een angstaanjagende film, pure fictie, het scenario speelt zich af in een bestaand Arabisch land, Jemen, waar de Amerikaanse ambassade wordt aangevallen. Mariniers arriveren om de ambassadeur en Amerikaanse burgers te evacueren. Het plein op het terrein van de ambassade staat vol met Jemenieten die tot op de laatste man, vrouw en kind door de Amerikaanse militairen worden doodgeschoten. Er volgt een officieel Leger onderzoek waarbij tenslotte komt vast te staan dat alle Jemenitische burgers geweren hadden en op de mariniers schoten. Een rechtvaardiging van het bloedbad. Het publiek wordt duidelijk gemaakt dat het moreel acceptabel en rechtvaardig is om al deze mensen af te slachten. De film werd mogelijk gemaakt dankzij de samenwerking met het Amerikaanse ministerie van Defensie. Dat heeft eerst het filmscript goedgekeurd voordat het technische ondersteuning kan geven. Het verhaal waarop de film zich baseert is geschreven door senator James Webb, de voormalige minister van Marine. Volgens zijn eigen website heeft hij “uitgebreid gewerkt als scenarioschrijver en producer in Hollywood.” Een duidelijk voorbeeld van het huwelijk tussen Washington en Hollywood. Deze film zal waarschijnlijk de geschiedenis ingaan, samen met Triumph des Willens van Leni Riefenstahl en The Birth of a Nation van D. W. Griffith als een van de meest racistische films ooit. Dit is dus een product van de samenwerking tussen Washington en Hollywood. Het zou eigenlijk samen met andere racistische films getoond moet worden, zodat kijkers de propagandatechnieken kunnen vergelijken. Het is een gruwelijke film, heeft veel geld opgebracht, de mariniers winnen, dus dat verkoopt, zeker op DVD en video en via de vertoningen in het Amerikaanse tv-circuit met zijn 600 kanalen. In de Verenigde Staten kan men elke week zeker 20 films zien die ik in mijn boek heb beschreven. Elke dag weer tenminste drie films waarin Arabieren als onbetrouwbare misdadigers worden afgebeeld. En dan heb ik het nog niet eens over de talloze herhalingen van oude tv-shows waarin Arabieren worden gecriminaliseerd en de nieuwe tv-programma’s waarin hetzelfde gebeurt. Dat is een gigantische hoeveelheid aan visuele propaganda en die wordt gereflecteerd in de opvattingen van veel mensen. Ongeveer 50 procent van de Amerikaanse bevolking is van mening dat de burgerrechten van Arabische Amerikanen beperkt mogen worden. Een ander effect is dat vandaag de dag de staat dossiers mag aanleggen van gewone burgers, hen lastig mag vallen, gevangen mag nemen zonder een fatsoenlijk proces, en dat de meerderheid van de mensen hiermee akkoord is gegaan. Als dit proces doorgaat zullen nog meer onschuldige individuen de dupe worden. Onlangs vond er een buitengewoon tragische gebeurtenis plaats op een universiteit in Virginia, een Koreaans Amerikaanse student schoot 32 mensen dood. Toen ik de eerste berichten daarover hoorde ben ik de actualiteit angstvallig blijven volgen uit vrees dat een Arabische of islamitische Amerikaan verantwoordelijk was. Wat zou er gebeurt zijn als het een islamitische of Arabische Amerikaan was geweest? Hoe zou de pers hebben gereageerd? Was het sentiment dan geweest: we sturen ze collectief terug naar het Midden Oosten? En wat als de dader tijdens het moorden Allah O Akbar had geroepen? Gelukkig werden niet onmiddellijk alle Koreanen in de VS beschuldigd of alle bewoners van Zuid Korea. Maar ik verzeker u dat als hij een Arabische- of islamitische Amerikaan was geweest er een volkomen andere reactie was gevolgd. Dat geeft het gevaar aan van het stereotyperen. Iemand zei me onlangs dat alleen als het erger wordt de stigmatiserende beelden zullen veranderen. Het moet eerst slechter worden voordat het beter wordt. Ik vroeg hem waarom? En hij antwoordde: “Kijk maar eens naar alle andere gestigmatiseerde groepen. Hoeveel zijn er niet om het leven gekomen voordat men zich schuldig begon te voelen over het onrecht. Kijk naar de zwarte slaven, kijk naar de holocaust. Pas na Auschwitz stopten de westerse christenen met hun vervolgingen van de joden. Zolang er geen massaslachting heeft plaatsgevonden zullen de stereotypen niet veranderen. Het is een cirkel, zo was zijn mening. Dit nieuwe antisemitisme tegen de Arabieren bestaat al meer dan een eeuw in onze beeldcultuur. Er bestaat natuurlijk nog steeds een antisemitisme dat tegen de joden is gericht, het is alleen veel verholener, het wordt niet hardop uitgesproken zoals bij de Arabieren, maar binnenskamers gefluisterd. Iedereen in Hollywood, of men nu joods, katholiek of protestant is heeft de Arabier in een kwaad daglicht gesteld. Het klopt dat er veel joden in de Amerikaanse filmindustrie werkzaam zijn, maar zij denken niet allemaal hetzelfde, voelen niet allemaal hetzelfde en handelen niet allemaal hetzelfde. Om hen aan te wijzen als de kwade genius achter de stereotypering is ronduit verwerpelijk. Het is moreel fout, want dan stereotypeer je zelf een hele gemeenschap, en daar verzet ik me fel tegen. Ik denk wel dat er iets zal veranderen als meer Arabische of islamitische Amerikanen films zouden gaan maken over zichzelf en over hun milieu. Er zal dan een ander, veel waarheidsgetrouwer beeld ontstaan. Dat zou moeten gebeuren maar het is nog niet zover. De eerste persoon die ooit de criminalisering van Arabieren blootlegde was mijn inmiddels overleden joodse vriend de journalist Arthur Lord, die daarover een tweedelige tv-serie maakte. Hij kreeg daarop veel haatbrieven, maar toch, hij was de eerste die het durfde te laten zien. Twee van de producenten met wie ik als adviseur heb samengewerkt voor de films Three Kings en Syriana zijn uiterst attente, invoelende, beschaafde mensen, beiden zijn joods. Als fatsoenlijk mens kun je niemand stereotyperen.’

Uit Reel Bad Arabs: “Vraag een invloedrijke persoon, een directeur, of schrijver in de filmindustrie of het ethisch verantwoord is om etnische of raciale stereotypen te handhaven en u kunt snel een negatief antwoord verwachten. Hoe is dan te verklaren dat sinds 1970, deze zelfde individuen meer dan 350 films hebben geproduceerd, geregisseerd, of het scenario voor hebben geschreven waarin Arabieren als verraderlijke culturele ‘anderen’ werden afgebeeld?’’

Bill Durodie, directeur van het International Centre for Security Analysis van het Londense Kings College verklaarde in The Power of Nightmares – The Politics of Fear, een driedelige televisiedocumentaire van de BBC: ‘In een maatschappij die nergens in geloofd wordt angst het enige agendapunt… en een maatschappij die in niets geloofd wordt vooral bang gemaakt door mensen die in van alles geloven.

De serie, die in oktober 2004 werd uitgezonden en in januari 2005 werd herhaald, wordt met de volgende tekst ingeluid: ‘'In het verleden beloofden politici een betere wereld te scheppen. Ze hadden verschillende manieren om dit tot stand te brengen, maar hun macht en autoriteit kwam voort uit de optimistische visie die ze hun aanhangers boden. Die dromen zijn niet uitgekomen en vandaag de dag hebben de mensen hun geloof in ideologieën verloren. In toenemende mate worden politici slechts gezien als managers van het openbare leven. Maar nu hebben ze een nieuwe rol ontdekt die hun macht en autoriteit herstelt. In plaats van het verschaffen van dromen beloven politici ons nu te beschermen tegen het leven. Ze zeggen dat ze ons zullen redden van verschrikkelijke gevaren die we niet kunnen zien en niet begrijpen. En het grootste gevaar van alles is internationaal terrorisme, een machtig en sinister netwerk, de slapende cellen in landen verspreid over de hele wereld. Een dreiging die bestreden moet worden door een oorlog tegen terreur. Maar een groot deel van deze dreiging is een verzinsel dat overdreven en vertekend is door politici. Het is een duister waandenkbeeld dat zich onweersproken verspreid onder regeringen in de gehele wereld, veiligheidsdiensten en de internationale media. Dit is een serie films over hoe en waarom deze fantasie was gecreëerd en wie er het meest van profiteerde. Centraal in het verhaal staan twee groepen, de Amerikaanse neoconservatieven en de radicale islam. Beide waren idealisten die voortkwamen uit het falen van de liberale droom om een betere wereld op te bouwen en beide hadden een in hoge mate vergelijkbare verklaring van wat deze mislukking had veroorzaakt. Deze twee groepen hebben de wereld veranderd, maar niet op de manier die ze beoogden. Samen schiepen ze het huidige nachtmerrieachtige visioen van een in het geheim georganiseerd kwaad dat de wereld bedreigt. Een fantasie die - zo ontdekten de politici - hun macht en autoriteit in een gedesillusioneerd tijdperk herstelde. En degenen met de ergste angsten werden het machtigst.’’

NATO. "1984" Revisited. When "War is Peace" by Ross Ruthenberg

Considering the current state of world peace and NATO's Responsibility to Protect (R2P) policy and to maintain a proper sense of balance, George Orwell's book "1984" should be reviewed periodically. In the spirit of the NATO Summit in Chicago, I present a few quotes from that textbook-for- tomorrow: * "If the Party could thrust its hand into the past and say this or that even, it never happened-that, surely, was more terrifying than mere torture and death." * "Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? Has it ever occurred to your, Winston, that by the year 2050, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could understand such a conversation as we are having now? The whole climate of thought will be different. In fact, there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking-not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness." * "All rulers in all ages have tried to impose a false view of the world upon their followers." * Then the face of Big Brother faded away again and instead the three slogans of the Party stood out in bold capitals: WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH" * Once when he happened in some connexion to mention the war against Eurasia, she startled him by saying casually that in her opinion the war was not happening. The rocket bombs which fell daily on London were probably fired by the Government of Oceania itself, 'just to keep people frightened'. This was an idea that had literally never occurred to him." * The object of waging a war is always to be in a better position in which to wage another war. * The essential act of war is destruction, not necessarily of human lives, but of the products of human labour. War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking in the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent. * The Ministry of Peace concerns itself with war, the Ministry of Truth with lies, the Ministry of Love with torture, and the Ministry of Plenty with starvation. For it is only by reconciling contradictions that power can be retained indefinitely." * He also said they were wrong in equating the military alliance to a "war machine." "If that's the basis for the protests, it's actually based on lack of knowledge. our organization is a peace movement. [Oh wait! That's not the Ministry of Truth speaking, that's NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen! [1] ] NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen I and so many others have struggled to understand why we need a world "war machine" in society today and finally, Fogh Rasmussen, NATO's titular leader, has provided the enlightenment: NATO is a "peace movement"! I now understand that the NATO dropping of the most bombs since WWII on Yugoslavia in the early '90s was actually just blanketing the area with peace droppings. Clarity now exists for NATO's recent peace initiative in Libya, i.e. just exercising their Responsibility to Protect, using the tools of peace such as missiles, bombs, etc. NATO's decade long Afghanistan mission comes into view as actually one of "spreading peace" near and far while roundly scolding the indigenous folks if they didn't understand. Then there is the on-going U.S. and NATO supported march towards peace in Syria, with assistance from many of Syria's friends such as Saudi Arabia. Syria's leader, Assad, just doesn't seem to get it that War is Peace and peace is what is being thrust upon him and his country, gushing in from Turkey, Iraq, etc. Russia should not be concerned about the ring of Aegis missile systems being deployed around them, as it is merely a "friendship ring of peace". Finally, well not really finally, as "1984" reminds us that "The object of waging a war is always to be in a better position in which to wage another war" (reminder: war is peace), which now makes clear to me and hopefully the millions of citizens of Iran that they should just hold on through the many debilitating sanctions being imposed upon them, because peace is coming! NATO and friends/partners are even now preparing their peace offerings and delivery tools because they fully understand their responsibility to protect you! Peace to all! "Everything faded into mist. Blackface, Brownface, Yellowface, Arabface, Jewface, and Purpleface

Ashton Kutcher recently embroiled himself in some controversy by starring in a commercial for Pop Chips. He was featured in the ad in brownface. Kutcher used brown make-up to darken his face in order to play Raj, a Bollywood producer “looking for love.” Many Americans of South-Asian ethnicity were offended and protested the racist stereotyping of Indians. Duly chastened, Pop Chips removed the ad.

Comedian Hasan Minhaj, himself of South Asian ethnicity, didn’t think this sufficient and issued a video response blasting Pop Chips:

One common reaction to the ad’s use of stereotypes, both on Twitter and in comments, has been, “How is this any different than Sacha Baron Cohen doing ‘Borat’?”
Minhaj’s response was decisive: Borat is not in brownface.
“As a man of Jewish descent, Sacha Baron Cohen uses the character of Borat to ridicule antisemitism, misogyny, and bigotry,” Minhaj told HuffPost. “What was the point of the ‘Raj’ character? Oh yeah, to sell Pop Chips by blatantly laughing at Indian people.”

In fact, Sacha Baron Cohen has now appeared in Arabface in the heavily anticipated movie The Dictator. Cohen depicts Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen, a fictional Arab character.

You know how many Americans have protested this movie? Exactly three and a half people. There is absolute silence, approving acceptance, and in fact gleeful admiration for the blatant racist stereotype that is the movie’s main character.

As Hasan Minhaj explained, the reason Pop Chips thought they could get away with brown face is

because that’s the way it is now. They wouldn’t do that with any other ethnicity. There’s a barbecue flavor of Pop Chips. Why didn’t you make him black faced and Tyrone? Why didn’t you do that? Because you knew you would get f*@king buried, Pop Chips, that’s why!

Well, at least Pop Chips removed the ad. It’s even worse for Arabs and Muslims: nobody has given two damns about The Dictator. If a major motion studio made a movie about a character in blackface, yellowface, or Jewface–they “would get f*@king buried.”

I know what you’re going to say to justify it: Cohen portrays a tyrannical Arab dictator, not just any ole’ Arab. Here’s why I’m not buying it. Can you imagine, just for a fleeting moment, if an Arab Muslim dressed up as an evil Jewish person–in Jewface no less–and made a movie out of it? Can you imagine how “f*@kingburied” that person would be?

If Sacha Baron Cohen is justifying racist stereotypes under the guise of “just portraying an evil Arab tyrant”, could Arabs make a major motion film featuring a Jewfaced actor–complete with hooknose, dreadlocks, and a skull cap–starring as an evil Israeli politician? If an Arab American or an American Muslim did such a thing, we all know how “f*@king buried” they’d be.

But, here we have Jewish actor, Sacha Baron Cohen, depicting an Arab in a racist way. The double standard is obvious: a Jewish person can get away with playing a stereotypical Arab Muslim, but an Arab Muslim would be likened to Adolf Hitler if he portrayed a stereotypical Jewish person.

Cohen’s mother was born in Israel and Cohen himself spent time in Israel. He also has associated with a Zionist movement, Habonim Dror. Thankfully, Habonim Dror is actually very moderate in its views towards Palestinians. Naturally, none of this is a crime, but it certainly means he is all the more audacious in portraying an Arab in Arabface. Imagine, for instance, the reaction of the media (Fox News!) to an Arab Muslim who is part of CAIR–or an Iranian American with ties to Iran–portraying a Jew in Jewface. Any Arab, Muslim, or Iranian who did such a thing would be “f*@king buried” alive in America. He’d lose his job, be labeled an Anti-semite, and become a social outcast forever.

Really, the truth is that one simply cannot imagine a major motion film being made using any other type of face: can you imagine the outcry over blackface? Is there even a question about that one? We’ve seen the reaction over brownface: the Pop Chips ad was removed. (Meanwhile, The Dictator marches onward without a single peep from any corner of American society.) As for yellowface, I sincerely doubt that Sacha Baron Cohen could get away with painting his face yellow and squinting his eyes. Jewface? Yeah, right!

The rules are clear:

Blackface? Not a chance!

Brownface? Maybe, but probably not.

Yellowface? No way, Jose!

Jewface? You Anti-Semite!

Arabface? We love it!

Stereotyping and racism against Arabs and Muslims is perfectly OK, because they occupy the lowest rung of the social totem pole in America.

I know people will rush to justify The Dictator, “because it’s funny.” I’m not denying it’s funny. I’ve seen the trailers and they are, quite honestly, hilarious. But, does being funny give one a pass to be blatantly racist? If a white actor made a comedic film in blackface, portraying a tribal African in native dress–with a bone through his nose and riding a cheetah–would this be acceptable so long as the jokes were funny enough?

True, comedy is a special world, but I just can’t imagine too many white comics making fun of blacks in a pejorative way and then justifying it by saying “it’s just comedy!” Certainly, black comedians can poke fun at their own community, just as Jewish comedians do to their own community. But, making fun of another race–especially one which historically has been at loggerheads with your own (i.e. white vs. black, Jewish vs. Arab, etc.) seems to me to be very questionable.

Another justification will be raised, which is that Jewish comedians, including Sacha Baron Cohen himself, make fun of Jews also. As I said above, it’s one thing to make fun of your own community. It’s quite a different matter to attack another. Furthermore, there’s a difference between relatively benign* (yet unhelpful) stereotypes (i.e. black people are good at basketball, have large you know what’s, etc.) and very malignant, extremely hurtful ones (i.e. black people are violent, prone to criminality, are apes, etc.). The jokes about Jewish people that Jewish comedians make are almost always of the former type and not the latter. Meanwhile, racist portrayals of Arabs and Muslims are often of the latter type, depicting them as violent terrorists and oppressors of women.

Compared to prevailing Arab and Muslim stereotypes, Ashton Kutcher’s Raj was significantly less offensive. How an Arab Muslim would long to be the “exotic”, funny-talking Apu character from the Simpsons instead of Achmed the Dead Terrorist. Trust me, you’d rather be stereotyped as the guy who works at a convenience store than the guy who blows it up.

*To be clear, I am opposed to all racist stereotyping, whether benign or malignant. The word “benign” is itself a bit misleading, because even these stereotypes have associations with malignant stereotypes: for example, black men being nothing but gladiators or sexual beasts. On the other hand, I recognize that it would probably be difficult to eliminate all stereotyping in comedy routines. Poor Russell Peters would be left with 2 minutes of material. Certainly, however, even Russell Peters understands and respects the difference between “benign” and malignant stereotypes.

Nonetheless, I have a huge problem with the fact that we define non-white people by their race. All we see, at least when we look at minorities, is a black face, a yellow face, and a brown face.

The important question of whether the military may hold US citizens and foreign nationals in indefinite detention came to a head recently in two important forums: a federal court in Manhattan and the House of Representatives. On May 16, US District Judge Katherine Forrest ruled unconstitutional an important section of the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2012, finding that it threatened US citizens with military detention for First Amendment–protected speech and associations. Two days later, taking up the NDAA for 2013, the House rejected a rare bipartisan proposal to bar the military detention of people apprehended on US soil. At the same time, it approved language that appeared to mandate that all foreign nationals who can be tried in a military commission must be tried there rather than in civilian criminal court.

RT: How many colleagues of yours share your views?

DK: 10-11 out of 435 members. But the American people are not prepared for this country to get into another war. If Mr. Netanyahu wants to pay for war – that's up to him.I would advise against it because I think Israel's security would be undermined by an attack on Iran. But the Unites States should not, cannot and must not be dragged into a war by any other country which calls itself our friend. If you are friends with someone, your friends don't get you into trouble – your friends help you to stay out of trouble. And unfortunately we have some friends that want to get us into trouble.

RT: Your colleagues say: why does the US have to take the first step? Let Iran do it first. What do you think about that – I mean Iranians are not sweet-talkers either.

DK: The United States is taking a lead on this. So, we should take the lead on diplomacy. If Congress sends a message to the world that says "Look, we don't have to talk to you, we don't want to negotiate with you, we will wage war on you if you don't do our bidding. That's not how you treat people, that's not the way that you solve things, that's not the way that you create a safer world. We must use diplomacy.

RT: Diplomacy is making concessions. Why do you think some of your most hawkish colleagues hate the thought of it?

DK: We have to think differently, we have to believe that peace is possible. What we have is the type of thinking coming out of Washington that says "war is inevitable". When you say "war is inevitable" you actually create a war of self-fulfilling prophecy. We have to stop thinking in terms of war.

RT: Even if Iran makes all the concessions, it seems the sanctions will still be there. Do American policy-makers like being constantly on the edge of war?

DK: Sanctions are another form of war, sanctions are just a step away from shooting. The mindset that exists here in Washington is generally the mindset of brinkmanship going right to the edge. The problem with that is that there's always room for miscalculation especially when part of the prevailing mentality says "you can't even have contact with the other side". Imagine for a moment, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis if Nikita Khrushchev and John F. Kennedy were not speaking to each other. It was the fact that they communicated that caused the crisis eventually to be resolved.

RT: Do you think it's eventually all about the US wanting to overthrow the Iranian leadership one way or another?

DK: The people of Iran have never let a foreign power determine through invasion what the outcome is going to be. The people of Iran are very concerned when their nuclear scientists are assassinated. How does that happen? Who is doing that? We should forget about trying to conquer other countries: that's an old model, that'd an old thinking from hundreds of years ago. We tried that in Iraq – it did not work. We have tried that in Afghanistan – it did not work. We keep trying that in Libya – it does not work. Their people want us to try that in Syria – it will not work. And it is not going to work in Iran, and the sooner that we understand it – the better it is, because we'll look at what our options are.

RT: 70% of Americans say 'Yes' to diplomacy with Iran. Do you think the lawmakers hear their voices?

DK: Every member of Congress has improved hearing when we get close to an election. So if we are far away from an election, it sometimes becomes more difficult to hear. And there are other voices: voices of other interest groups, voices of arms merchants, of war contractors, of people who just make money out of a war. They don't care where the war is and who it hurts – they just want money. Members of Congress have to be wise when they are being plagued by interest groups who may want them to vote in one way, but it would be a way that would be adverse to the interests of the American people.

RT: How happy are people in Congress when it comes to war?

DK: I've seen this phenomenon: most Congressmen are relatively placid, peace-loving people. But something happens when we are on the threshold of conflict. I saw this happen when the US government made a decision to bomb Serbia. These people were placid and reasonable, but suddenly this war fever moves in and war fever has a way of inflecting peoples' thinking – it's like a virus.

RT: What's the general mood in Congress with regard to Syria?

DK: It's mixed. There are members of Congress and Senate who have been calling for intervention. But intervention on whose behalf? The more you look at it, there are so many different groups playing in Syria right now. US intervention could bring about a triumph for Islamic fundamentalism. Just because you intervene, doesn't mean you are going to get the results that you want. Actually that's an ironclad rule, that intervention will get the opposite results to what you want!'

'Hafez Aladdeen Is An Israeli Patriot

The Dictator-A Film Review

On the face of it, Baron Cohen’s The Dictator is a horrid film. It is vulgar, it isn’t funny and if it has five good jokes in it, they appear in the two minute official trailer. In short, save your time and money – unless of course, you are interested in Jewish identity politics and neurosis.

Similar to Cohen’s previous work, The Dictator is, once again, a glimpse into Cohen’s own tribal morbidity. After all, the person and the spirit behind this embarrassing comedy is a proud self-loving character who never misses an opportunity to express his intimate affinity to his people, their unique comic talent and their beloved Jewish state. But let’s face it, Cohen isn’t alone, after all, he has created The Dictator together with a Hollywood studio. So, it’s reasonable to say that what we see here is just one more Hollywood-orchestrated effort to vilify the Arab, the Muslim and the Orient.

I guess that Arab rulers, regimes and politics are an ideal subject for a satirical take, still, one may wonder what exactly does Sacha Baron Cohen know about the Arab World? As far as the film can tell, not much. Instead, Cohen projects his own Zionist and tribal symptoms onto the people of Arabia and their leaders.

In the film, Cohen plays General Hafez Aladeen, the Arab ruler of the oil-rich North African rogue state Wadiya. On the face of it, he is the satirical version of Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi, but in reality, Aladeen’s actions are no less than a vast amplification of the crimes committed by Israel and its war criminals such as Shimon Peres, Ehud Olmert and Tzipi Livni.

When Baron Cohen ridicules the Arab Dictators who obsessively seek WMD and nuclear weapons he should bear in mind that it is actually his beloved Jewish state that has, since the 1950s, been pushing the entire region into a nuclear race. It is his Israeli brothers and sisters who express every too often their lethal enthusiasm to destroy Iran and other regional entities. When Baron Cohen mocks the Arab rulers who murder their opponents and kill kids, women and elders, he once again projects Israeli symptoms because it is actually the Jewish state that so often engages in systematic mass murder and war crimes on a colossal scale. Someone should remind Cohen that the pictures of white phosphorus pouring over UN shelters were taken in Gaza, not in Saddam’s Baghdad, Homs (Sirya) or imaginary Wadiya. When Sacha Baron Cohen presents the Arab leader as a savage rapist he may want to remind himself that Moshe Katzav, who was, until recently, the President of the Jewish State is now locked behind bars after being sentenced for rape. It is therefore far from coincidence that when Cohen attempts to bond with his protagonist Dictator Aladeen, he actually speaks in his mother tongue, Hebrew. Cohen speaks Hebrew because Aladeen is not an Arab dictator, he is actually an Israeli patriot like Cohen himself.

But let’s try to transcend ourselves beyond Baron Cohen’s projections and confess: as much as Cohen’s new film is lame, Cohen, himself is far from being a fool. In fact, he has managed to bring to light a few interesting and astute political insights. For example, towards the end of the film Dictator Aladeen produces a remarkable speech at the UN in favour of dictatorship. In front of the delegations, Aladeen draws a pretty profound list of unintended parallels between the USA and dictatorship. Delivering a sharp political criticism by means of comedy deserves respect.

Another provocative insight is delivered through the character of Zoey (Anna Farris), a devout feminist and a human right activist. Zoey runs a multi-ethnic eco-friendly grocery store in Brooklyn. She is the ultimate solidarity campaigner and this time she rallies against Aladeen and his regime. While Zoey invades the street demonstrating against Aladeen’s brutality, Aladeen’s Chief of Staff Tamir (Ben Kingsley) plots against his ruler inside the UN building. He sells out his country’s assets to oil tycoons and world leaders. The cinematic meaning of it all is clear- the bond between the so-called Left and the imperial powers has been established. Zoey, the lefty progressive seems to work towards the exact same goal as the leading corrupted capitalist expansionist forces. They all want to bring the Aladeen regime to an end. I guess that many of those who monitor solidarity activism and discourse would agree with Cohen’s readings. After all, it was feminists and women’s rights groups that, in the 1990s, prepared the ground for the War against Terror and the invasion of Afghanistan. The Left was also very reluctant to support the democratically elected Hamas. I guess that a Leftist, thrown into a room together with Dershowitz and Bin Laden, would probably attempt to bond first with Dershowitz.

But Zoey isn’t just a progressive solidarity and human right activists. As the plot progresses, Aladeen and Zoey fall for each other. Towards the end of the film ‘solidarity activist’ Zoey and Dictator Aladeen get married. This is when Dictator Aladeen and the rest of us find out that Zoey is actually a Jew. From a cinematic perspective, the Jew, the human right campaigner and the solidarity activist leader are all one. This amusing reading is unfortunately consistent with the reality of the solidarity movement. Those who monitor Jewish Left activism detect a relentless effort among some Jewish campaigners to tribally hijack and even Zionize the discourse of solidarity, human rights and marginal politics. However, from a Judaic perspective, Zoey, the new wife of Dictator Aladeen is nothing short of an incarnation of Biblical Queen Esther. Like Esther, Zoey has managed to infiltrate into the corridors of a lucrative foreign power.

I guess that with AIPAC controlling American foreign policy and 80% of Tory MPs being CFI (Conservative Friends of Israel) members, a Jewish queen of a fictional Wadiya is almost exotic.

How I survived a Tel Aviv mob attack

Last night I had to flee a raging mob not too far from my home in south Tel Aviv. After long speeches of incitement by right-wing parliamentarians, the masses stormed after me and a fellow journalist, and then turned on African asylum seekers, their businesses and their homes. This is how it happened.

It started out as a fairly quiet demonstration – or demonstrations, to be precise. One small demonstration took place in Shapira, my neighborhood, where several weeks ago an Israeli young man threw Molotov cocktails into asylum seekers’ homes. The dominant discourse here was, as is typical of the neighborhood, more moderate, and focused on blaming the government (and not the asylum seekers) for local hardships in south Tel Aviv.

On my way to the central right-wing demonstration in Hatikva neighborhood, a five minute bike ride to the east, I ran into several dozen demonstrators walking in the opposite direction. It turns out that these were J14 activists from all over the city, who wanted to make a point of the importance of finding solutions to benefit both veteran Israeli communities, struggling to make a living and fearing a rise in crime, and the masses of African asylum seekers who have no jobs and nowhere to go but these parts of the city. They felt unwelcome at the central demonstration and decided to split and form this march.

The central demonstration was organized mostly by Likud activists, which was somewhat strange to begin with, as the protest was officially aimed at the Likud led government. It started out quite peacefully, and a group of us journalists and photographers was standing on the side, somewhat bored and discussing plans for the weekend. On the stage, local residents told stories of attacks they experienced by African asylum seekers, while MKs from the Likud and parties further to the right were placing the blame for all the neighborhoods’ hardships on the asylum seekers and “the left.” The crowd was growing uneasy, but none of us thought that this would turn into anything big.

And then it happened

It all started with one woman who came at me out of nowhere, and started screaming: “You throw stones at soldiers! Shame on you! Get the hell out of here!” I tried to say that I have never thrown stones at anybody in my life, but she was not exactly in the mood for dialogue. “You lie! I see you every week on television throwing stones at soldiers and calling them Nazis!”

From this point on everything happened extremely fast. The one woman turned into two, then a group of ten people, which kept on growing. I tried to explain that this was a misunderstanding, that I never attacked any soldier, that I am a resident of Shapira and a journalist covering the protest. But I was talking to myself. Nobody was listening.

Only four seconds or so must have passed before similar charges were leveled at my colleague, Ilan Lior of Ha’aretz, who was standing next to me. “You too throw stones at soldiers! I drive a bus and every week I see you attacking checkpoints!” someone yelled. A hand from the crowd grabbed Ilan’s notepad and threw it in the air. Ilan was trying to say that he was never in the occupied territories and that it’s all a misunderstanding, but he too was talking to himself. Nobody was listening.

At this point, about six Border Police officers showed up and tried to stand between the growing mob and the two of us. I hoped this would help, but soon enough an older woman broke through and leaped towards me, beating my chest, back and hands. I started retreating, knowing that I wouldn’t stand a fighting chance against the masses if I tried to stop her. I lost sight of Ilan. He was sucked into the crowd. I had an open road behind me, I could escape. I feared for Ilan. I feared for myself.

I knew no one would come to my aid. Faced with the angry mob and seeing more people coming from behind me and looking for action – I chose flight. A speaker on the central stage was saying how Daphni Leef and her J14 friends were actually the cause of all “our” problems. I was standing near a police car, wondering how I would get my bike back from the demonstration area, when I heard the loudspeakers announcing that “Haggai Matar is here, and he and his mother are traitors who should be kicked out of the country.” This was really time to split and go home.

I was walking back towards my part of town when I heard a massive cry, looked back, and was horrified to see the mass – about 1,000 people strong – racing forward in my direction, screaming “Sudanese to Sudan!” Later, I would find out that Ilan managed to escape the crowd around him, that 20 people started to chase him, and that the 20 soon turned into this horde I was seeing. Ilan was grabbed by policemen who possibly saved his life when they tossed him into a police car and got out of there.

I kept on running and reached the Hagana Bridge, separating the greater part of Tel Aviv from its eastern neighborhoods. It is also the bridge separating Hatikva from Shapira, Neve Sha’anan and LevinskyPark, where dozens and hundreds of asylum seekers sleep at nights. Right now this bridge was – like in old times – the last line of defense between the mob and the area most densely populated by foreigners.

Fortunately, the police realized this, and was successful in stopping the human flow on the bridge. Unfortunately, this was not the end. A car packed with Africans was caught in the crowd, its windows shattered, its riders threatened and saved by police. Seeing this from afar I decided it was time to go home, but reports kept flowing in: the mob turned back into Hatikva and attacked asylum seekers’ businesses and homes, looted at least one store, and attacked random black people on the streets. Seventeen were arrested, but the attacks went on for hours. An Activestills photographer present on the scene later told me that the pictures he took tell only a small portion of the story. He was threatened not to take pictures of looters, and saw so many stones thrown at houses and people beaten (mostly quite lightly) on the streets – that he couldn’t possibly take pictures of it all.

Morning is now up, broken windows of shops and houses need mending, and the peace is somewhat restored. At the end of the day, we must remember that most of the people in our southern neighborhoods largely live together in peace. Many try to bridge gaps and find solutions. Many on both sides know that their enemy is not the asylum seekers or the local Israeli population but the government – which is both creating this impossibly flammable situation and throwing burning matches into it. But this is not the end of the story. It is only the beginning.

Iran gezien vanuit Irak Stel je voor dat in Duitsland de revolutie uitbrak. Nederland zou ademloos aan de TV zitten, en alles willen weten. In Iraaks Koerdistan leeft de onrust in buurland Iran nauwelijks. Alleen als je het onderwerp zelf te berde brengt, willen mensen er nog wel over nadenken. Die Judit, Duitsland viel Nederland binnen omdat een verkeerde man in Den Haag aan de macht was. Mijn God, houdt deze propaganda dan nooit op? Ik bedoel, christelijke journalistiek is en blijft christelijke journalistiek, maar mag het een onsje minder! Feiten Judit, geen meningen. Mevrouw, de journalistiek is een vak, geen hobby.'

Desgevraagd weigerde Neurink mij enige tijd geleden antwoord te geven op de simpele vraag waarom ze op een dergelijke tendentieuze wijze bericht geeft. Het is algemeen bekend dat Irak, gesteund door de VS en Saoedi Arabie, Iran aanviel en niet omgekeerd. Maar dit feit past niet in de betaalde propaganda van Neurink. Jawel, en ook deze Trouw-propagandiste wist dankzij haar juiste instelling ten opzichte van de macht een lucratief baantje binnen te slepen. Ons kent ons in dit wereldje.

Met haar twee Siamese katten vertrekt verslaggeefster Judit Neurink van trouw eind deze maand naar Noord-Irak. Ze gaat daar een mediacentrum opzetten. Haar vaste baan op de buitenlandredactie verruilt ze voor pionierswerk.

Op tafel liggen zes placemats die eruit zien als een Trouw-pagina: een afscheidscadeau van de collega’s. Ze hebben op geplastificeerde matjes een speciale editie gemaakt met koppen als: ‘Vreugde in Noord-Irak, gemengde gevoelens in Amsterdam’. Van De Telegraaf is voor één keer de Privé-pagina geleend, met smeuïge berichten en zwoele foto’s. Maar daar mag onder geen beding uit worden geciteerd.

Al heeft ze haar afscheid al gevierd, tot eind maart werkt Midden-Oosten-specialist Neurink (50) stug door op de buitenlandredactie. Daarna blijft ze nog voor 15 procent in dienst om reportages te maken en een weblog bij te houden. Na een jaar heeft ze een terugkeeroptie, maar sommigen geloven niet dat ze terugkomt. Ze verhuist naar de Koerdische stad Suleimanya, waar het redelijk rustig is.

‘De afgelopen drie jaar heb ik al trainingen gegeven in Noord-Irak en Iran. Maar iedere keer had ik het gevoel dat het een druppel was op een gloeiende plaat. Ik wist dat ik alleen verschil kon maken met de oprichting van een mediacentrum. Dat plan leefde al langer, zowel in de regio als bij Press Now, de stichting die me vroeg om met Irakese co-trainers en Nederlandse collega’s cursussen te geven.’

Op 1 april wordt Neurink directeur van het mediacentrum. Het initiatief krijgt ondermeer subsidie van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken, Press Now, Koerdische fondsen en regionale autoriteiten. Tijdens de trainingen krijgen Irakese journalisten basale vaardigheden aangeleerd; het toepassen van hoor- en wederhoor bijvoorbeeld, het scheiden van feiten en meningen en ooggetuigenverslagen maken.

‘Ik stuur mijn cursisten altijd naar de vuile toiletten in het gebouw. “Beschrijf maar wat je ziet.” Nu zijn toiletten daar sowieso taboe, vandaar dat ze ook niet worden schoongemaakt. Maar in de verslagen lees ik nooit iets over het gat in de vloer en de remsporen. Samen bespreken we dan hoe reportages aan kracht kunnen winnen als je beelden schetst met je pen.’

Er zijn ook plannen voor on-the-job trainingen, Engelse lessen en consultancy – oud-Trouw-hoofdredacteur Frits van Exter komt half april managementadviezen aan hoofdredacties van Koerdische kranten geven. En er moet een soort Nieuwspoort komen. ‘Noord-Irak is een conservatieve samenleving, maar er werken vrij veel vrouwen in de journalistiek. Alleen kunnen zij niet zo makkelijk naar een theehuis of restaurant. Zo’n ontmoetingscentrum zou een uitkomst zijn. We moeten dan wel lidmaatschap invoeren, anders krijgen we publiek dat alleen maar vrouwen komt kijken.’

Krijgt ze nooit het verwijt dat zij als westerse journalist komt vertellen hoe het allemaal moet? ‘Wel ooit van een Nederlandse collega, maar niet in Noord-Irak. Journalisten denken daar juist: wat je van ver haalt, is lekker. Ik leg niets op, ik laat zien hoe het ook kan. Eén cursiste was gewend elke vraag met een nederig mamoesta (leraar) te beginnen. Tot ze merkte dat één of twee keer meer dan genoeg was.’

Winds of change in Koerdistan

Het lijkt wel ruzie: nog voor hij drie woorden heeft uitgesproken wordt de Koerdische officier van de veiligheidspolitie woedend onderbroken. Niet om wat hij gezegd heeft, hij heeft trouwens nog niets gezegd, maar omdat hij qualitate qua bij voorbaat ongelijk heeft.

Zijn opponenten zijn lokale journalisten uit Kalar, deelnemers aan een workshop georganiseerd door het Independent Media Centre in Kurdistan. Later hoor ik dat zeker een kwart van hen familie is van de veiligheidsagent, de meeste anderen hebben waarschijnlijk bij hem op school gezeten.

Vriend- en vijandschap zijn in het noorden van Irak nauwe verwanten. De workshop wordt gegeven in Kalar. Doel is om de relatie tussen pers, politici en politie te verbeteren. Eerder heb ik tweedaagse workshops rond hetzelfde thema gegeven in Erbil, Suleimanya en Duhok. En steeds zag ik diezelfde agressie bij journalisten. Ze bombardeerden de bezoekende agenten en politici niet met vragen maar met meningen: de politie is wreed en gewelddadig; parlementaire oppositie voeren heeft geen zin; de wetten deugen niet en de uitvoerders van die wetten nog minder. Na afloop van de sessies dronken deelnemers en bezoekers samen broederlijk (en opvallend vaak ook zusterlijk) samen een kopje mierzoete thee.

Kalar is een stad van overlevers. Toen Saddam in de jaren tachtig meer dan honderdduizend Koerden liet vermoorden, vluchtten Koerden uit de vergaste en vernietigde omliggende dorpen hier naartoe. Op straat is de vrouwenmode zwart. Maar als ik, héél, héél voorzichtig het onderwerp traumatisering aan de orde probeer te stellen, kijkt de hele groep mij zwijgend en niet begrijpend aan. Trauma’s? Hoezo? Niets over bekend.

Op de televisies die overal aan staan, beginnen beelden uit Egypte het voetbal (de Azië Cup!) te overheersen. Een dag na mijn terugkeer hoor ik dat een workshop voortijdig moest worden beëindigd omdat er ander werk aan de winkel was voor de veiligheidspolitie. The wind of change. Maar niemand weet nog hoe die verandering zal uitpakken.

West Europa is voor de deelnemers aan mijn workshops een voorbeeld, veel meer dan de Verenigde Staten. Het beeld dat zij over onze samenleving koesteren is bijna idyllisch, al is Geert Wilders ook hier geen onbekende naam (Vroeger werd je als Nederlander in deze contreien alleen met landgenoten als Frank Rijkaard en Ruud Gullit geassocieerd).

De bereidheid om te leren is groot, groter dan ik gewend ben in andere landen in transitie. Vaak stuitte ik daar op een diep ingeklonken wal van eigen gelijk: bij ons gaat het nu eenmaal anders en als je onze cultuur niet kent kan je ook niet begrijpen waarom wij het anders doen. Hier merk ik weinig van zo’n afwerende houding.

Het maakt mij hoopvol, ondanks de corruptie, de verpolitiekte journalistiek, de afhankelijkheid van het buitenland (zelfs de stoelen in de café’s moeten worden ingevoerd) en de verzwegen trauma’s. Vraag jezelf als eindredacteur van VillaVPRO en ook nog eens als hoofdredacteur van de VPRO-Radio het volgende af: zou 'mijn medewerker' zoals je hem zo fraai omschrijft, Jair Stein, een Palestijnse gast in de uitzending van VillaVPRO onweersproken hebben laten verklaren dat, wat betreft de Joden in Israel, wij 'te maken [hebben] met een volk dat gebrainwashed is.' Sterker nog: zouden Jair Stein en jij een Palestijn aan het woord hebben gelaten die publiekelijk verklaart dat na een bloedbad onder Joodse burgers in Israel, waarbij bijna 300 Joodse kinderen gedood werden: 'wij een grote opruimingsactie [hebben] gehouden, maar blijkbaar, wat ik begrijp, dus niet groot genoeg' ?

Welnu, beste collega Schaepman, het antwoord is zoals jij en ik weten ondubbelzinnig: 'Nee, meneer Van Houcke! Wij zouden een dergelijke persoon met dergelijke opvattingen niet onweersproken in de uitzending dit racisme hebben laten verspreiden. Sterker nog, beste collega, wij zouden een dergelijke Palestijn met dergelijke fascistische opvattingen, niet eens aan het woord hebben gelaten.'

Daarom Schaepman, waarom heb jij als eindredacteur en ook nog eens hoofdredacteur erin toegestemd dat de pro-Israel propagandist Loonstein aan het woord werd gelaten? En waarom heb je niet je excuses aan de luisteraars aangeboden voor het onweerproken laten verspreiden van racistische opvattingen? Ik bedoel, bij de christenzionisten van de EO kun je dergelijke gevaarlijkse nonsens verwachten, maar waarom nu ook bij de VPRO, waar jij de scepter zwaait?

Het zal niemand echt kunnen verbazen dat er in Noord-Irak Israelische militaire instructeurs te vinden zijn die voor de Amerikanen Koerdische troepen opleiden in de fijne kneepjes van het moorden. Daarover zult u Schaepman, Neurink, Van Exter en al die andere gesubsidieerde schnabbelaars nooit horen. Dat past niet in het propagandistische plaatje. Dat is ook de reden waarom kritische journalisten door dit soort zwaar gefinancierde media-organisaties geweerd worden. Mentale corruptie is uitstekend voor de carrière.

De Nederlandse organisaties Press Now en Independent Media Centre hebben in Iraaks Koerdistan sinds 2004 een door de overheid gesubsidieerd project lopen waarin Nederlandse journalisten Iraakse journalisten de kneepjes van de Westerse journalistiek bijbrengen. Press Now werkte eerder in Iran/met dissidente Iraniërs.

Het Independent Media Centre in Kurdistan is opgericht door Press Now en de Stichting Democratie & Media. Wat de laatste met PCM heeft gedaan is bekend.

Vorig jaar fuseerde Press Now met de ngo Freevoice en heet nu Free Press Unlimited, dat in 40 landen actief is, en "wil betrouwbaar nieuws en informatie beschikbaar maken voor iedereen". Director of Operations is manager Ruth Kronenburg die o.a. van Endemol komt. In 2009 werd zij interim directeur van Radio Zamaneh. Dat radiostation werd opgericht in dit kader. En in dit kader: Haagse subsidie tegen regime Iran

"Je weet niet meer waar de waarheid eindigt en het tactisch manoeuvreren begint. Je weet niet of het waar is wat betrokkenen beweren, of niet meer dan een geruststellend verhaaltje. Je weet wel dat er zulke grote belangen op het spel staan dat het algemeen geoorloofd wordt geacht de waarheid naar eigen inzicht te kleuren.

Je weet bijvoorbeeld dat iedereen die zegt dat Europa zich níet voorbereidt op de grexit, de Griekse uittreding uit de euro, liegt. Dat is niet per definitie kwalijk. Het kan in ons eigen belang zijn dat we stevig worden voorgelogen - alleen is het vervelend dat we niet weten wanneer dat gebeurt, aangezien de leugen daarmee sterk aan effectiviteit zou inboeten."

Maar er is meer. Vaak is belangrijker wat de mainstream media verzwijgen dan wat ze melden. 'Onwelgevallig nieuws,' noemde Kijne dit. Daarnaast is de context waarin 'het nieuws' gebracht wordt uiterst belangrijk. Ik geef u een voorbeeld uit de Volkskrant van vandaag. Op pagina 17 staat een heel klein berichtje waarvan de strekking grote consequenties kan hebben. Onder het kopje: 'PKK valt Turkije aan vanuit Syrie' staat het volgende: 'Syrie laat toe dat Koerdische rebellen van de PKK dat land gebruiken als uitvalsbasis voor aanvallen op Turkije. Dat heeft het Turkse ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken woensdag gezegd. De banden tussen Turkije en Syrie verslechteren in rap tempo. Enkele Syrische dorpen zouden geheel in handen zijn van de PKK.'

Hier ontbreekt de context die de informatie een geheel andere betekenis geeft dan de Volkskrant wil oproepen. Het beeld moet zijn: Syrie is de boef, Turkije het slachtoffer. De Volkskrant doet voorkomen dat de verstrekte informatie geen propaganda is. Hoe weet men dit? Wel, net als Marvin Gaye, 'they heard it through the grapevine.' Dit is de officiele versie van de werkelijkheid zoals die dagelijks via de 'vrije pers' over ons heenspoelt. Welke context verzwijgt de Volkskrant nu? Wel, dat het Syrische leger geen enkele speelruimte van het Westen krijgt om tegen door ons opgeleide soennitische terroristen op te treden of tegen Koerdische rebellen. Wat verzwijgt de Volkskrant nog meer? Wel, dat de NAVO staat te trappelen om zijn macht in het olierijke Midden-Oosten nog meer te laten gelden, in nauwe samenwerking met Israel dat zich niets van het internationaal recht aantrekt en onder aanvoering van de VS dat eveneens zich niets van het internationaal recht aantrekt wanneer het meent een bepaald land te moeten plat bombarderen om zijn eigen geopolitieke en economische belangen te bevorderen. Er ontbreekt op dit moment nog een directe aanleiding, een provocatie als het ware om het grootscheepse geweld tegen Syrie en de grote Satan, Iran te beginnen. En die aanleiding kan zijn dat Syrie 'toelaat' dat Turkije vanuit dit buurland wordt 'aangevallen'. In het handvest van de NAVO staat immers dat een 'aanval' op een van de leden wordt beschouwd als een 'aanval' op alle bondgenoten. Maar dat verzwijgt de Volkskrant en wel omdat het 'in ons eigen belang [kan] zijn dat we stevig worden voorgelogen.'

En wie bepaalt wat 'ons eigen belang' is? Wel, al eeuwenlang bepaalt de ware macht dit, en al millennialang bepaalt de geestelijkheid dit en hun moderne opvolgers, de pers. Als woordvoerders van de macht bepaalt zij wat waar is en wat niet, wie belangrijk is en wie niet, wat 'ons belang' is en wat niet, wanneer en waarom 'we stevig' moeten 'worden voorgelogen' en wanneer niet.

Kundera over de westerse journalisten, de 'termieten van de reductie':

'Over de hele wereld strooien ze dezelfde simplificaties en cliche’’s uit waarvan mag worden aangenomen dat ze door de meerderheid zullen worden aanvaard, door allen, door de hele mensheid. En het is niet zo belangrijk dat in de verschillende organen van de media de verschillende politieke belangen tot uiting komen. Achter het uiterlijke verschil heerst een en dezelfde geest. Je hoeft de Amerikaanse en Europese opiniebladen maar door te kijken, van rechts zowel als links, van Time tot Der Spiegel: in al die bladen tref je dezelfde kijk op het leven aan, die zich in dezelfde volgorde waarin hun inhoudsopgave is opgebouwd weerspiegelt, in dezelfde rubrieken, dezelfde journalistieke aanpak, dezelfde woordkeus en stijl, in dezelfde artistieke voorkeuren en in dezelfde hierarchie van wat ze belangrijk en onbeduidend achten. De gemeenschappelijke geestesgesteldheid van de massamedia, die schuilgaat achter hun politieke verscheidenheid is de geest van de tijd.'

Hoe weet ik dit allemaal? Wel, niet alleen heb ik als journalist hun werk al meer dan vier decennia van nabij nauwlettend gevolgd, maar ze geven het nu zelf publiekelijk toe, zoals we bij Kijne en Wagendorp kunnen lezen. Maar niet alleen bij hen. Vier jaar geleden werd bekend dat oud-Trouw-hoofdredacteur Frits van Exter, de huidige hoofdredacteur van Vrij Nederland 'managementadviezen aan hoofdredacties van Koerdische kranten' ging geven.

The Mindboggling Sum We Actually Spend on National Security

If you've heard a number for how much the U.S. spends on the military, it's probably in the neighborhood of $530 billion. But that's merely the beginning of it.

Recent months have seen a flurry of headlines about cuts (often called “threats”) to the U.S. defense budget. Last week, lawmakers in the House of Representatives even passed a bill that was meant to spare national security spending from future cuts by reducing school-lunch funding and other social programs.

Here, then, is a simple question that, for some curious reason, no one bothers to ask, no less answer: How much are we spending on national security these days? With major wars winding down, has Washington already cut such spending so close to the bone that further reductions would be perilous to our safety?

In fact, with projected cuts added in, the national security budget in fiscal 2013 will be nearly $1 trillion -- a staggering enough sum that it’s worth taking a walk through the maze of the national security budget to see just where that money’s lodged.

If you’ve heard a number for how much the U.S. spends on the military, it’s probably in the neighborhood of $530 billion. That’s the Pentagon’s base budget for fiscal 2013, and represents a 2.5% cut from 2012. But that $530 billion is merely the beginning of what the U.S. spends on national security. Let’s dig a little deeper.

The Pentagon’s base budget doesn’t include war funding, which in recent years has been well over $100 billion. With U.S. troops withdrawn from Iraq and troop levels falling in Afghanistan, you might think that war funding would be plummeting as well. In fact, it will drop to a mere $88 billion in fiscal 2013. By way of comparison, the federal government will spend around $64 billion on education that same year.

Add in war funding, and our national security total jumps to $618 billion. And we’re still just getting started.

The U.S. military maintains an arsenal of nuclear weapons. You might assume that we’ve already accounted for nukes in the Pentagon’s $530 billion base budget. But you’d be wrong. Funding for nuclear weapons falls under the Department of Energy (DOE), so it’s a number you rarely hear. In fiscal 2013, we’ll be spending $11.5 billion on weapons and related programs at the DOE. And disposal of nuclear waste is expensive, so add another $6.4 billion for weapons cleanup.

Now, we’re at $636 billion and counting.

How about homeland security? We’ve got to figure that in, too. There’s the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which will run taxpayers $35.5 billion for its national security activities in fiscal 2013. But there’s funding for homeland security squirreled away in just about every other federal agency as well. Think, for example, about programs to secure the food supply, funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. So add another $13.5 billion for homeland security at federal agencies other than DHS.

That brings our total to $685 billion.

Then there’s the international affairs budget, another obscure corner of the federal budget that just happens to be jammed with national security funds. For fiscal 2013, $8 billion in additional war funding for Iraq and Afghanistan is hidden away there. There’s also $14 billion for what’s called “international security assistance” -- that’s part of the weapons and training Washington offers foreign militaries around the world. Plus there’s $2 billion for “peacekeeping operations,” money U.S. taxpayers send overseas to help fund military operations handled by international organizations and our allies.

That brings our national security total up to $709 billion.

We can’t forget the cost of caring for our nation’s veterans, including those wounded in our recent wars. That’s an important as well as hefty share of national security funding. In 2013, veterans programs will cost the federal government $138 billion.

That brings us to $847 billion -- and we’re not done yet.

Taxpayers also fund pensions and other retirement benefits for non-veteran military retirees, which will cost $55 billion next year. And then there are the retirement costs for civilians who worked at the Department of Defense and now draw pensions and benefits. The federal government doesn’t publish a number on this, but based on the share of the federal workforce employed at the Pentagon, we can estimate that its civilian retirees will cost taxpayers around $21 billion in 2013.

By now, we’ve made it to $923 billion -- and we’re finally almost done.

Just one more thing to add in, a miscellaneous defense account that’s separate from the defense base budget. It’s called “defense-related activities,” and it’s got $8 billion in it for 2013.

That brings our grand total to an astonishing $931 billion.

And this will turn out to be a conservative figure. We won’t spend less than that, but among other things, it doesn’t include the interest we’re paying on money we borrowed to fund past military operations; nor does it include portions of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration that are dedicated to national security. And we don’t know if this number captures the entire intelligence budget or not, because parts of intelligence funding are classified.

For now, however, that whopping $931 billion for fiscal year 2013 will have to do. If our national security budget were its own economy, it would be the 19th largest in the world, roughly the size of Australia’s. Meanwhile, the country with the next largest military budget, China, spends a mere pittance by comparison. The most recent estimate puts China’s military funding at around $136 billion.

Or think of it this way: National security accounts for one quarter of every dollar the federal government is projected to spend in 2013. And if you pull trust funds for programs like Social Security out of the equation, that figure rises to more than one third of every dollar in the projected 2013 federal budget.

Yet the House recently passed legislation to spare the defense budget from cuts, arguing that the automatic spending reductions scheduled for January 2013 would compromise national security. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has said such automatic cuts, which would total around $55 billion in 2013, would be “disastrous” for the defense budget. To avoid them, the House would instead pull money from the National School Lunch Program, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Medicaid, food stamps, and programs like the Social Services Block Grant, which funds Meals on Wheels, among other initiatives.

Yet it wouldn’t be difficult to find savings in that $931 billion. There’s plenty of low-hanging fruit, starting with various costly weapons systems left over from the Cold War, like the Virginia class submarine, the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, the missile defense program, and the most expensive weapons system on the planet, the F-35 jet fighter. Cutting back or cancelling some of these programs would save billions of dollars annually.

In fact, Congress could find much deeper savings, but it would require fundamentally redefining national security in this country. On this issue, the American public is already several steps ahead of Washington. Americans overwhelmingly think that national security funding should be cut -- deeply.

If lawmakers don’t pay closer attention to their constituents, we already know the alternative: pulling school-lunch funding.

Introduction

Richard Rorty (1998), the American pragmatist philosopher, begins his book "Achieving Our Country" with the comment, "National pride is to countries what self respect is to individuals: a necessary condition for self improvement" (p. 3). He provides a narrative re-crafting of the dream in pre-Vietnam America by reference to Walt Whitman and John Dewey. According to Rorty, Whitman and Dewey shaped the secular dream of America based on the notion of exceptionalism without reference to the divine - a society where all Americans would become mobilized as political agents in the cause of democracy. He argues that, for Whitman and Dewey, the conjunction of the concepts "America" and "democracy" is an essential part of a new description of what it is to be human. Rorty's success as a philosopher is related to his ability to tell a new story about America and the American Dream, to re-describe the past using a different vocabulary and to highlight how a new philosophical history can make us feel differently about who we are and who we might become. Rorty offers us a "philosophy of hope," a philosophy based on the narrative of cultural invention, self-discovery and national self-creation.[2]

What Rorty's book also draws attention to is the power of narrative and the way in which the American Dream is a specific narrative that comes into being at a particular time and place and then can be "read back" onto American history - on the Puritan beginnings and those who wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. It is a narrative that can be "read forward," projected onto the future, as a means of establishing a vision for a society and economy. This is the art of narrative retellings of the America Dream, which, in the hands of Rorty or Barack Obama, becomes a shining beacon to unify the people in recognizing what is best in America. The question is whether, in a time of radical change and transition - when America is losing its world position as the only superpower, when millions of Americans are losing their homes and jobs as a result of the recession and financial crisis, when America enters into a massive budget-cutting and deficit-financing mode - whether the American Dream can be reclaimed, refurbished, re-articulated and retold in era of decline.

Obama is a skillful politician and a great orator. He has consistently made reference to the American Dream in his campaigning for the presidency and after, often focusing on his own remarkable story as emblematic of the possible. He has also carefully used the intellectual resources of the American Dream to unify Americans and to provide the vision for the society he wants others to dream of. The question is, in a time of decline, how serviceable is this dream: Can it be restored? Are its core ideals able to be refashioned?

Fareed Zakaria, like Obama, believes that it is possible to restore the America Dream and, like millions of immigrants in developing countries, remembers the attraction of America when he was young:

The American dream for me, growing up in India in the 1970s, looked something like the opening credits of Dallas. The blockbuster TV series began with a kaleidoscope of big, brassy, sexy images - tracts of open land, shiny skyscrapers, fancy cars, cowboy businessmen and the very dreamy Victoria Principal.
A few years later, when I got to America on a college scholarship, I realized that the real American Dream was somewhat different from Dallas. I visited college friends in their hometowns and was struck by the spacious suburban houses and the gleaming appliances - even when their parents had simple, modest jobs. The modern American Dream, for me, was this general prosperity and well-being for the average person. European civilization had produced the great cathedrals of the world. America had the two-car garage. And this middle-class contentment created a country of optimists.

Writing in Time in October 2010 and rerunning the theme on CNN in February 2011, Zakaria notes the angry and dispirited mood of Americans who, after the worst recession since the Great Depression, are strikingly fatalistic about their prospects. The middle class has been hollowed out and American workers are losing jobs as American companies locate off shore. The American Dream can be restored, Zakaria argues, but it will involve hard and painful choices, and he makes the following recommendations: shift from consumption to investment; invest heavily in education and training; develop "fiscal sanity"; and simplify the tax code and benchmark. He goes on to argue:

My proposals are inherently difficult because they ask the left and right to come together, cut some spending, pare down entitlements, open up immigration for knowledge workers, rationalize the tax code - and then make large investments in education and training, research and technology, innovation and infrastructure. But the fact that it is a solution that crosses political borders should make it more palatable, not less. And time is crucial.

Zakaria buys into the concept of the American Dream without scrutinizing or historicizing it and the way it has changed and been narratively re-crafted for every age: "That dream or hope has been present from the start. Ever since we became an independent nation, each generation has seen an uprising of ordinary Americans to save the American Dream from the forces which appear to be overwhelming it."

Yet with all narratives of this kind that serve as a basis of a national ideal and spell out an appeal to the better nature of citizens to unify them by alluding to a vision, we need to ask: What is the history of the narrative? Who are the main storytellers, and to what ends do they tell the tale? When we ask these questions, the American Dream seems a very white dream, one that does not recognize how the dream rested on exploitation of indigenous peoples, the black slave economy, and a corporate America that increasingly squeezes wealth from the American people and exploits cheap labor elsewhere in developing countries. While it is based on an ideal of inclusiveness, it never offered indigenous peoples or African-Americans much hope.

"The Epic of America"

James Truslow Adams was the historian who first coined the term "American Dream" in "The Epic of America," published in 1931, significantly at a time when America was suffering the early years of the Great Depression. He chose his title well. The term "epic" refers to a long, narrative poem detailing the heroic deeds and events significant to a culture, tribe or nation. In archaic Greek style, these poems followed a certain format, exhibiting set literary conventions that described a heroic quest, normally beginning with an invocation to the muse, where genealogies are given and the values of a civilization are heralded.

Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey" are classic examples that begin the Western tradition. These epics were often long national poems that described and embroidered the development of episodes or events important to the history of a nation or race, and were told in an elevated style. It is a form that persists through the medieval into the modern era.

To describe America as an epic is to make an appeal to noble sentiments, and Adams was aware of this; especially in the context of the 1930s, he wanted to highlight and romanticize the ethic of equality - and in particular, equality of opportunity and equality before the law. He also wanted to use these ideals and principles to describe a country based on the conscious development of a secular social order that found its origins in the Declaration of Independence, which holds certain truths to be self-evident, "that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." But do epics make good history? And is the American Dream is still an attainable and serviceable ideal?

Adams depicted a dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position (pp. 214-215)

Adams was a writer rather than an academic, and as a freelance writer, he wrote colonial histories. His trilogy on the history of New England was warmly received, and he won the Pulitzer Prize for the first volume, "The Founding of New England" (1921). He was active in the American Society of Arts and Letters and various historical societies. In his "The Epic of America," Adams attempted to address the historic development and philosophic vision of America that strongly reflected the values of the Declaration as uniquely American and extolled the advantages of education as a means for the promoting of equality of opportunity, meritocracy and social mobility. When he wrote "The Epic of America" while living in London, 16 percent of the workforce was unemployed - some 8 million Americans - and unemployment was to get much worse as the Depression dragged on. He died disappointed in his country after a heart attack in 1949.

Jim Cullen (2003) historicizes the American Dream, focusing on the founding fathers and the Declaration of Independence as "the charter of the American Dream," as well as on Abraham Lincoln and his dream for a unified nation, and Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of racial equality. He argues that the contemporary version of the American Dream has become debased, built on its outlandish dreams of overnight fame and fortune. Perhaps most significantly, Cullen sees the American Dream as embodying the ideal that all men are created equal. Even with the obvious contradiction of slavery, the essence of this dream allowed for the possibility of racial equality, class mobility and home ownership - values that are part of the core of collective consciousness of Americans.

Like Adams, Cullen deplores the way the American Dream increasingly becomes the pursuit of material prosperity and consumerism. David Camp (2009) suggests that while it matured into a shared dream under Roosevelt's New Deal, when a new level of security was cemented in place by The Social Security Act of 1935,[3] it was re-calibrated during the period of postwar prosperity:

Buttressed by postwar optimism and prosperity, the American Dream was undergoing another recalibration. Now it really did translate into specific goals rather than Adams's more broadly defined aspirations. Home ownership was the fundamental goal, but, depending on who was doing the dreaming, the package might also include car ownership, television ownership (which multiplied from 6 million to 60 million sets in the U.S. between 1950 and 1960), and the intent to send one's kids to college. The G.I. Bill was as crucial on that last count as it was to the housing boom. In providing tuition money for returning vets, it not only stocked the universities with new students - in 1947, roughly half of the nation's college enrollees were ex-G.I.'s - but put the very idea of college within reach of a generation that had previously considered higher education the exclusive province of the rich and the extraordinarily gifted. Between 1940 and 1965, the number of U.S. adults who had completed at least four years of college more than doubled.

This was an ideal that translated the American Dream into a new society based upon purchasing power, epitomized by John Kenneth Galbraith's (1958) "The Affluent Society," focusing on attaining hitherto undreamed levels of personal affluence. The succeeding decades exposed a commitment to high levels of personal debt via new credit cards, easy credit and family investment portfolios in the bull markets of the day. At the same time, the American Dream was being drained of its substantive content and, "decoupled from any concept of the common good (the movement to privatize Social Security began to take on momentum) and, more portentously, from the concepts of working hard and managing one's expectations." As he goes on to comment:

These are tough times for the American Dream. As the safe routines of our lives have come undone, so has our characteristic optimism - not only our belief that the future is full of limitless possibility, but our faith that things will eventually return to normal, whatever "normal" was before the recession hit. There is even worry that the dream may be over - that we currently living Americans are the unfortunate ones who shall bear witness to that deflating moment in history when the promise of this country began to wither. This is the "sapping of confidence" that President Obama alluded to in his inaugural address, the "nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights."

As S.L. Hanson and J. Zogby (2010) indicate: "Cullen (2003) and others (Sherraden 1991; Newman 1993; Shapiro 2004; Moen and Roehling 2005; Johnson 2006; Ho 2007) have suggested that the American Dream may be unraveling as we see a growing wealth gap, ongoing race and gender inequality, and expanding poor immigrant populations. Perhaps the 21st century is not a time of increasing progress toward the American Dream."

Obama on the American Dream

Obama is a brilliant politician who knows the currency and power of the concept of the American Dream. His second book, entitled "The Audacity of Hope," (2006) was subtitled, "Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream."

Most Americans have simple dreams. A job that can support a family. Health care we can count on and afford. A retirement that is dignified and secure. Education and opportunity for our kids. But today, the price of the American dream is going up. All across the country, Americans are working harder for less. We've never paid more for health care or for college. It's harder to save, and it's harder to retire. There are things we need to do right now to give our economy a boost, but a short-term stimulus is not enough. We have to put the American dream on a firmer foundation.

His recipe was clear: "stop giving tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas, and to put a tax cut in the pocket of middle class Americans"; "protect a secure retirement by easing the burden on America's seniors"; "change our bankruptcy laws to protect workers' pensions instead of protecting banks"; "make health care affordable and accessible for all Americans." He wrote, "We also have to be clear that the American dream must never come at the expense of the American family." He also indicated the, "need to expand paid leave" and, perhaps most fundamentally, "It's time to put a college education within reach of every American."

The book became a national bestseller in the fall of 2006, and its promises and policy sketches became part of his 2008 campaign for the presidency. The phrase, "the audacity of hope" was one adopted from his pastor, Jeremiah Wright (whose version was, "the audacity to hope"), and Obama also used it as the basis also for his keynote at the 2004 Democratic Convention.[4] In that speech, he began by recalling his grandfather's dream and his family heritage to say: "I stand here today, grateful for the diversity of my heritage, aware that my parents' dreams live on in my precious daughters. I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that, in no other country on earth, is my story even possible."

In the same paragraph, Obama then alludes to the Declaration as a basis for America Dream: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. That among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," and he goes on to say, "That is the true genius of America, a faith in the simple dreams of its people, the insistence on small miracles," and ends his speech with his own version of the Dream: "I believe we can give our middle class relief and provide working families with a road to opportunity. I believe we can provide jobs to the jobless, homes to the homeless, and reclaim young people in cities across America from violence and despair. I believe that as we stand on the crossroads of history, we can make the right choices, and meet the challenges that face us. America!"

In his post-election travels, Obama listened to a 30-year-old law school graduate who said he is no longer able to make the interest payments on his educational loans, much less able to have a mortgage or a family. He said he had been inspired by Obama's campaign. But now, "That inspiration is dying away," he said. "I really want to know: Is the American dream dead?"

"Absolutely not," Obama responded. "There is not a country in the world that would not want to change places with us," he continued. "We are still the country that billions of people in the world look to and aspire to."

"It's like the American dream in reverse." That's how President Obama, ten days after taking office, described the plight of Americans hit by the faltering economy. His catchy description fell short - the dream has turned into a nightmare for tens of millions.

Opinion polls reveal that increasingly, Americans believe that the American Dream is a thing of the past. Perhaps surprisingly, Hanson & Zogby (2010) report the majority of Americans consistently reported that the American Dream is more about spiritual happiness than material goods. Americans continue to believe that working hard should be the most important element for getting ahead in the United States, but does not guarantee success. A majority of respondents believe that achieving the American Dream will be more difficult for future generations. Americans are increasingly pessimistic about the opportunity for the working class to get ahead and increasingly optimistic about the opportunity for the poor and immigrants to get ahead in the United States.

As Hanson & Zogby (2010) comment, "Beliefs about opportunity are essential aspects of social systems in that they involve subjective interpretations of the legitimacy and openness of the stratification system ... In the United States, there is considerable evidence that systems and structures work to the distinct advantage of some and to the disadvantage of others." Obviously, growing and structured inequality is not compatible with the American Dream, as its main ideological tenet is to suggest that all can succeed. In this context, inequality is immoral and irresponsible. The American dream has been eclipsed by the power of wealth, and the racial wealth gap is growing, with generational inequality becoming even more deeply entrenched. Americans cannot continue to hold deep-rooted beliefs in the principles of individualism, equal opportunity and meritocracy in the face of such growing inequalities.'

'A Private Conversation - The Leveson Inquiry, Corporate Journalism And Elite Collusion

Advertising revenue is almost the life-blood of the press. Although the figure has fallen in recent years, today it constitutes around 60 per cent of newspapers’ total income, including 'quality' titles like the Guardian and the Independent.

This obviously has profound implications for media performance, as even the corporate media are sometimes willing to accept. Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson notes in the Financial Times:

‘Behind their journalistic missions, most news organisations have always been commercial operations that sell audiences to advertisers.’ (‘News industry can survive in the digital age’, Financial Times, March 21, 2012)

Media corporations are also typically owned by wealthy individuals or giant conglomerates, and are legally obliged to subordinate human and environmental welfare to maximised revenues for shareholders. (See Joel Bakan, ‘The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power’, Constable, 2004.)

The consequences for democracy are normally ignored. But again, the truth sometimes pops up. After giving evidence to the Leveson inquiry in April 2012, the owner of the Independent, Evgeny Lebedev, tweeted:

‘Forgot to tell #Leveson that it's unreasonable to expect individuals to spend £millions on newspapers and not have access to politicians.’

Even a Guardian report had to note:

‘It was a funny and refreshingly honest message after all the recent humbug and hypocrisy from media magnates about not wanting to influence the political class.’

A less refreshingly honest morsel was served up by Brian Leveson himself when he said:

‘The majority of journalism is people doing their job honourably with dedication, fearlessly and entirely in the public interest.’ (our emphasis)

Imagine if Leveson had noted that the majority of journalism is fearlessly doing its job ‘in the corporate interest’. It would have elicited mayhem among the politico-media classes.

Perhaps we’re being a tad unfair to Leveson, given that he appeared to let slip that he supports media activism. He said that internet-based scrutiny is ‘leading to greater accountability for journalists. People will study them, and I think there's no reporter - no decent reporter - in the land who would not welcome this extra scrutiny.’

Or so one would like to think. Alas, it is not quite our experience over the last eleven years of being blanked, blocked, abused and dumped beyond the pale of media ‘respectability’; even by people who very much like what we're doing but who would rather not be tarred with the same brush.

The Thumb-Sucking 5-10 Per Cent Rule

The Leveson inquiry has exposed the profound influence of corporate owners on media reporting. The Guardian’s Nick Davies, whose reporting of the Milly Dowler phone-hacking scandal has been justly praised, claimed in his book, ‘Flat Earth News’, that the cumulative effect of owners and advertising was no more than 5-10 per cent:

‘Journalists with whom I have discussed this [i.e. what Davies calls “the retreat from truth-telling journalism”] agree that if you could quantify it, you could attribute only 5% or 10% of the problem to the total impact of these two forms of interference.’ (‘Flat Earth News’, Chattus & Windus, 2008, p. 22)

As we have pointed out, these numbers are contradicted even by the fact that so many aspects of the modern newspaper have evolved in response to the demands of advertisers and corporate owners.

Jonathan Cook, a former Guardian journalist, has been keeping a beady eye on the Leveson inquiry evidence challenging Davies’ 5-10 per cent claim. For example, Harold Evans, a former Rupert Murdoch editor at the Sunday Times, described to Leveson how, in 1981, Murdoch rebuked him for reporting gloomy economic news and ‘not doing what he [Murdoch] wants, in political terms’. Evans says that Murdoch came to his home and the two ‘almost ended up in fisticuffs over a piece on the economy.’

Evans added:

‘Murdoch would also haul in senior staff for meetings to tell them to alter their coverage, including the editorial line of the leader columns and telling the foreign editor to “attack the Russians more”.’

No wonder former Sun editor David Yelland described how editors ‘go on a journey where they end up agreeing with everything Murdoch says … “What would Rupert think about this?” is like a mantra inside your head’.

Cook also pointed out two articles ‘that as good as admit the obvious: that Murdoch decided what parties his papers would back in return, of course, for political support for his business interests.’

The first described how, in 2009, James Murdoch, deputy chief operating officer of News Corp, had told David Cameron, then Tory leader of the Opposition, that the Sun would switch its support in the upcoming general election from Labour to the Conservatives. This announcement was made shortly after Jeremy Hunt, then the Tory’s shadow culture secretary, had visited News Corp offices in the US.

A second article reported that Murdoch was ‘attracted by the idea’ of Scottish independence and thought that Alex Salmond, Scotland’s First Minister, was a ‘nice guy’. Murdoch ‘cleared the way’ for the Scottish edition of the Sun to endorse Salmond's Scottish National Party at the Scottish elections in spring 2011, ‘just as [Salmond] was promising to lobby for News Corporation to take control of BSkyB.’ The SNP won a landslide victory in the Scottish parliamentary elections on May 5. Salmond admitted that he had been ‘happy’ to make a direct call to culture secretary Jeremy Hunt to support Murdoch’s controversial attempt to take complete control of the satellite broadcaster.

But this wasn’t just a one-off; it was - and remains - a crucial part of the political process. As Cabinet Office minister Oliver Letwin told Leveson, News International bosses ‘could be very demanding’. Referring to then Sun editor Rebekah Brooks, charged last week with conspiracy to pervert the cause of justice:

‘If you are on the same side as her, you have to see her every week. This was how it worked.’

Letwin added:

‘The realpolitik is that you have to get on with people who run newspapers. Labour did the same.’

Indeed, in 1995, opposition leader Tony Blair flew halfway round the world to curry favour with Rupert Murdoch at the luxury Hayman Island resort in Queensland, Australia. Addressing senior News Corporation executives, the Labour leader pledged an end to the ‘rigid economic planning and state controls’ of the ‘Old Left’ and declared that ‘the battle between market and public sector is over.’ Two years later, after 18 years of supporting the Tories, Murdoch used the Sun to officially endorse Blair and New Labour who then won a landslide victory at the 1997 general election. In 2011, Blair even became godfather to Murdoch’s youngest child.

And Murdoch isn't alone in casting a shadow over the political process. Prime Minister David Cameron admittedthat ‘he and other politicians became too close to too many newspaper proprietors and executives.’ So politicians have been bending to the will of media owners, and media owners have been influencing, and even directing, what their own editors and journalists do.

Jonathan Cook told us why he believes it’s important to document examples of senior journalists revealing the extent of proprietorial interference:

‘Davies’ book [‘Flat Earth News’] was so influential, especially with other journalists, because it propped up the lie journalists like to tell themselves and others that the problem of the “profession” is essentially a lack of funding and proper care from media owners. They prefer that assessment for two obvious reasons: first, journalists want more money invested in their papers because they hope it means promotions and wage rises; and second, it helps to avert their gaze from the reality that editorial independence is, and always was, a myth.’ (Email, April 26, 2012)

Cook also told us:

‘It's really about time Davies retracted that bit of nonsense from his book. The problem is that, were he to do so, he could no longer justify his argument that media failure is the result chiefly of economic pressures rather than structural flaws.’ (Email, April 25, 2012)

A Private Conversation Between Elite Groups

Peter Oborne, chief political commentator at the Daily Telegraph, is no raving leftie. But as a political conservative, he had some astute observations to make to Leveson on the corrupt state of politics and media in this country.

Oborne said that when he arrived on the political reporting ‘scene’ he was ‘staggered’ by the closeness of politicians and journalists:

‘It was ceasing to be a conversation between activists and politicians but between the media and the politicians. The News International annual party at the Tory and Labour conference was an extraordinary power event to which people were excluded. Unfortunately I never got in, but you got the entire cabinet and all the influence brokers and the senior members of the media class, and it was a very important statement I felt about how Britain was being governed.’

He continued:

‘And then you got the astonishing business of the senior News International people sitting just behind the Cabinet. They were the VIPs in the chamber, I believe really important media types were there as well, they were brought into the inner sanctum. I felt this was a perversion of our democracy, it was starting to become a private conversation between elite groups rather than a proper popular engagement.’

He described the politico-journalism collusion as a ‘conspiracy against their [newspapers’] readers’. When challenged by Leveson to justify such a blunt assertion, Oborne responded:

‘That's exactly what was going on. [...] In order to report during that time you had to get close to the people who ran new Labour, there were very few of them. [...] People who tried to report objectively and fairly were bullied and victimised and not given access to information. People who were part of the circle were favoured and of course there was a price for that. Very hard to be an independent observer, to keep your integrity in those circumstances.’

Political reporting, he said, had become ‘private deals, private arrangements, between media and politicians.’ Collusion between politicians and the media helped to explain why the public was so ‘grievously misinformed’ about Iraq in the run-up to war. And we would add that it also helps explain why the public has been grievously misinformed about the post-invasion death toll in Iraq which likely exceeds one million, with four million refugees, in a country that has been utterly devastated.
