Operation Cast Lead: three boys killed whilst they sleep
As of 3 January 2009, reports indicate that around 421 Palestinians are now dead and more than 2,000 injured since the start of ‘Operation Cast Lead’ eight days ago. The Gaza based organisation Al-Mezan, is reporting that 59 children are among those killed. DCI-Palestine is in the process of confirming this figure.
At around 11:30pm, on Sunday, 28 December 2008, Ziad Al-Absi heard the sound of a helicopter hovering above the family home near the Al-Huda Mosque, in the Yebna refugee camp, Rafah, in southern Gaza. Fearing that the asbestos roofed house would provide little protection in the event of an explosion, Ziad moved his family to a neighbour’s house. Once the sound of the helicopter was gone, Ziad returned to his house and was soon joined by his wife, and eight children.
Shortly after 1.00am, on Monday, 29 December 2008, the Al-Absi family was struck by a missile whilst the family was sleeping. Three boys were killed in the attack:
Sudqi - aged 4 years
Ahmad - aged 12 years
Mohammad - aged 13 years
These deaths were the obvious and foreseeable consequence of firing a missile into a densely populated refugee camp. The children’s mother, Afaf, remains in hospital in a critical condition. Only one member of the family, Mahmoud, escaped injury in the attack.
Please consider sending an urgent appeal to your elected representatives demanding:
An immediate end to Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip and a ceasefire by all parties.
The immediate provision of urgent humanitarian and medical assistance to the Gaza Strip.
The immediate lifting of Israel’s siege of the Gaza Strip to allow the free flow of goods and services in and out of the territory.
An immediate freeze of the EU-Israel upgrade process. Any future Action Plan for the upgrade must include clear and measurable human rights benchmarks for which Israel must be held accountable.
