Al Jazeera bericht: 'Israel’s Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz approved the construction of about 300 new settlement homes in the West Bank, despite a call by the “roadmap” peace plan to freeze settlement expansion, Reuters reported.
A Defense Ministry official said the new houses will be built in Maale Adumim, the largest Israeli settlement in the West Bank.The official also said that Mofaz approved preparatory steps for expanding two isolated settlements, Bracha and Nokdim.The U.S.-backed “roadmap” peace plan demands Israel to halt all settlement activity in the occupied territories, and calls for the creation of an independent Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel. However, Israel claims that it needs to expand existing settlements in the West Bank to accommodate the “natural growth” of settlement populations. About 450,000 Jewish settlers live in some 120 settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. All Israeli settlements are considered illegal under international law.'
