'Upgrading of Israel's relations with the European Union... in order to continue the fight against terrorism.'

Je schrijft me: 'Je citeert een bericht waaruit zou blijken dat Lieberman naar NL kwam om Verhagen te bedanken voor zijn steun in de Mensenrechtenraad.'
'Zou blijken.' Dit is de offciele verklaring van het Israelische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken:
'Foreign Minister Liberman will hold discussions with his hosts in Denmark and the Netherlands on the upgrading of Israel's relations with the European Union as well as bilateral issues. He will also discuss with them regional issues, including the violation of UN Security Council resolutions by Iran and Syria in the wake of Israel's interception of the arms ship last week. He will also stress the importance that the democratic states oppose the Goldstone report, in order to continue the fight against terrorism. FM Liberman will convey to the Dutch leaders his appreciation of their firm stance against the Goldstone report.'
Interessant is ook dit: 'While in the Netherlands, FM Liberman will meet with the Israeli ambassadors to the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Sweden, as well as with the ambassador to the European Union, and will conduct in-depth discussions with them of the issues on Israel's agenda vis-a-vis these states.'
Waarom zou Lieberman niet naar 'the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Sweden' zijn gegaan? Welnu, omdat de meeste collega's van hem uit beschaafde landen deze extremist liever niet en plein publique ontmoeten. Dit in tegenstelling tot de door jou in bescherming genomen CDA-er Maxime Verhagen, die bedankt werd voor de 'firm stance against the Goldstone report' van de Nederlandse regering. En dat allemaal terwijl jij enkele dagen eerder de NRC-lezers nog probeerde te overtuigen dat 'Verhagen Gaza-rapport goed af[handelt]. Ook minister Verhagen wil straffeloosheid tegengaan, vergist u zich niet.'

Is dat niet brutaal, het land dat het internationaal recht al meer dan 60 jaar lang schendt, komt hier de Nederlandse regering bedanken en en passant pleiten voor 'upgrading of Israel's relations with the European Union.' Letwel, de christelijke politicus Verhagen is de grootste pleitbezoger binnen de EU voor een 'upgrading' van Israel in het Associatie-Akkoord. De vice premier van de 'Joodse natie', een staat die beschuldigd wordt door internationale mensenrechtenorganisaties en door de VN van oorlogsmisdaden, komt hier zijn beloning ophalen. En jij maar minister Verhagen prijzen. De Israelische terroristen willen dat wij het internationaal recht opzij schuiven 'in order to continue the fight against terrorism.'
De taal Willem! De taal, het enige dat we hebben om ons tegen de terreur van de macht te beschermen. Als we de taal niet meer hebben omdat die verkracht is, dan hebben we geen woorden meer om onze gedachten in uit te drukken. Als een hoogleraar in het internationaal recht al met de taal begint te goochelen,dan duurt het niet lang meer. Als de intellectuelen zelfs de schijn van de waardevrije wetenschap niet meer ophouden, heeft het cynisme defintief gewonnen. Imre Kertesz schrijft terecht: 'we kunnen niet ontkennen dat de achttiende-eeuwse mythe van de rede de laatste grote vruchtbare mythe van Europa was; het feit dat die verdwenen is -- of in rook opgegaan, om in de sfeer van het onderwerp te blijven -- heeft ons in psychisch opzicht tot wezen gemaakt.' Wezen die in een gesloten kringetje blijven rondcirkelen, terwijl het leven een herhaling van zetten is geworden, en niemand ergens meer echt in gelooft, tot het fascisme je voordeur binnenmarcheert.
Misschien is wel het grootste probleem het feit dat voor ons hier in het rijke westen het internationaal recht een abstract begrip is waar je tijdens conferenties consequentieloos over kunt praten met mensen van goede wil, althans dat laatste hopen we. Maar voor de overgrote meerderheid op aarde is het internationaal recht slechts het enige wapen waarmee men zich zou kunnen beschermen. Alleen ook hier geldt, zoals Kertesz die Auschwitz overleefde, terecht stelt: 'Er is geen maatstaf voor lijden, onrecht heeft geen meetinstrument.' En wat doet een wetenschapper zonder een meetinstrument? Niets toch. Tenzij hij/zij de moraliteit beseft die in de taal/het recht besloten ligt.
