Vandaag, dinsdag 10 november, is op initiatief van vier organisaties (EAJG, NIPI, SIVMO en Gate48) de advertentie ‘Praten met Hamas’ in het NRC Handelsblad geplaatst. Door diverse personen en organisaties, waaronder United Civilians for Peace, is de advertentie mede ondertekend. De advertentie roept de Nederlandse regering op om een einde te maken aan de uitsluiting van Hamas. De ondertekenaars zijn ervan overtuigd dat het Israëlisch-Palestijnse conflict niet op militaire, maar alleen op politieke wijze kan worden opgelost: door middel van dialoog en onderhandelingen op basis van respect voor het internationale recht. Om via onderhandelingen een eind aan het conflict mogelijk te maken, moet de Europese Unie zonder voorwaarden het gesprek aangaan met alle partijen in het conflict, inclusief Hamas. Op 4 november kwam de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties bijeen om te discussiëren over het rapport van de Commissie Goldstone, dat op 15 september 2009 is uitgekomen. In de aangenomen resolutie roept de Algemene Vergadering Israël en de Palestijnen op om een geloofwaardig en onafhankelijk onderzoek in te stellen naar beschuldigingen van oorlogsmisdrijven tijdens de invasie door het Israëlische leger in de Gazastrook in januari 2009. In het rapport van de Zuid-Afrikaanse rechter Richard Goldstone worden Israël en Hamas beschuldigd van oorlogsmisdaden. De Algemene Vergadering heeft na twee dagen debat de resolutie aangenomen, met 114 stemmen voor, 44 onthoudingen en 18 stemmen tegen, waaronder de VS en Nederland. De Israëlische Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Avigdor Lieberman bezoekt Nederland. Hij zal op woensdag 11 november een (besloten) ontmoeting hebben Ter gelegenheid van dit bezoek heeft UCP een factsheet gemaakt. U vindt deze op onze website. Op de website van de Volkskrant is een opinieartikel gepubliceerd van o.a. UCP over de komst van dhr. Lieberman naar Nederland.

UCP wil u wijzen op de mogelijkheid om een stage te lopen bij het Center for Democracy and Community Development (CDCD) in Oost-Jeruzalem. Dit Palestijnse instituut is o.a. gericht op het bevorderen van een rechtvaardige vrede in de Palestijnse gemeenschap. Het CDCD is op zoek naar internationale stagiaires voor minimaal drie maanden. Palestijnse protesten tegen de muur, 20 jaar na de val van de Berlijnse muur

Palestinians and foreign activists have torn down segments of Israel's separation wall in a demonstration marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. In the town of Qalandiya in the occupied West Bank, a group of masked activists using a lorry pulled down a two-metre cement block before Israeli security forces confronted them with tear gas grenades. Several of the estimated 50 demonstrators passed through the hole they had made, hoisting a Palestinian flag and setting ablaze tyres on the other side. Protesters were wearing shirts with the text "Jerusalem we are coming", which was the slogan for the protest.
Abdullah Abu Rahma, leader of the People's Campaign to Fight the Wall, said: "Today we commemorate 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. This is the beginning of the activities, which we do, to express our hold on our land, and our refusal to this wall - the wall of torture, the wall of humiliation."

Palestijnse president Abbas stelt zich niet herkiesbaar voor verkiezingen op 24 januari 2010

De Palestijnse president en Fatahleider Mahmoud Abbas stelt zich niet herkiesbaar in de eerstvolgende Palestijnse verkiezingen in januari. Dat heeft hij donderdag tijdens een persconferentie in Ramallah laten weten. "Ik heb onze broeders in de PLO verteld dat ik geen behoefte heb om aan de volgende verkiezingen mee te doen", zei de 74-jarige leider in een rechtstreekse uitzending op de televisie. Abbas voegde er aan toe dat zijn besluit vaststaat en hij niet meer op andere gedachten kan worden gebracht.
Een naaste medewerker van Abbas, Abed Rabbo, zei eerder dat het uitvoerend comité van de Palestijnse Bevrijdingsorganisatie (PLO) nog probeert de president op andere gedachten te brengen om zich wel herkiesbaar te stellen. Binnen de PLO speelt Fatah een dominante rol.

Palestijnse mensenrechtenorganisaties: sluit geen compromis over het recht
On 4 November 2009, the General Assembly will meet to discuss the Report of the UN Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict (the Goldstone Report). A draft Resolution has been presented to the General Assembly for debate, and it is evident that those who claim to speak on behalf of human rights and international law are failing in their mandate. The draft Resolution is a politically motivated compromise, intended to obtain support for a Resolution without substance, one which fails to protect victims’ rights or to pursue accountability. While the draft addresses certain demands, it does not explicitly include operational steps for the implementation of the Recommendations of the Goldstone Report, and absolutely fails to bring remedy and redress to victims.
There can be no compromise on the fundamental principles of human rights and international law. If international law is to prove capable of protecting civilian populations and of averting future atrocities, then it must be enforced. Each individual’s basic human right to equal protection of the law and to an effective judicial remedy must be ensured. Those accused of committing international crimes must be investigated, tried, and prosecuted.

Volkskrant: Palestijnen verliezen hoop na draai VS

De Amerikaanse poging om een Israëlisch-Palestijns vredesproces op gang te brengen is vrijwel volledig vastgelopen. De Palestijnen beschuldigen de VS ervan dat ze hun oren te veel laten hangen naar de Israëlische premier Netanyahu. 'Er gloort geen hoop aan de horizon', zei de Palestijnse president Abbas zondag bij monde van zijn woordvoerder.
Tijdens een kort bezoek aan Jeruzalem liet de Amerikaanse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, Hillary Clinton, zaterdag het ware gezicht van Washington zien, aldus de Palestijnen. Clinton karakteriseerde het aanbod van Netanyahu om nog drieduizend huizen op de Westoever af te bouwen en verdere uitbreiding aldaar daarna te bevriezen, als ‘ongekend’. Ze riep de Palestijnen daarom op zonder verdere voorwaarden aan besprekingen te beginnen.

Amnesty International: Israël ontneemt water Palestijnen
Amnesty International beschuldigt Israël ervan onevenredig veel water te onttrekken aan gezamenlijke waterbronnen waardoor Palestijnen te kort komen. Ook belemmert Israël projecten die de watertoevoer kunnen verbeteren. ‘Israël laat de Palestijnen slechts toe tot een fractie van de gemeenschappelijke waterbronnen, die zich vooral op de bezette Westelijke Jordaanoever bevinden, terwijl de illegale Israëlische nederzettingen vrijwel onbeperkte toegang krijgen’, aldus Donatella Rovera, onderzoeker voor Amnesty in Israël en de bezette Palestijnse gebieden.
In een nieuw en uitgebreid rapport onthult de organisatie dat de Israëli's bijna viermaal zoveel water als de Palestijnen verbruiken. Deze ongelijkheid is nog schrijnender in bepaalde regio's van de Westbank waar de kolonisten tot twintigmaal meer water per inwoner gebruiken dan de Palestijnen in naburige plaatsen, die moeten overleven met twintig liter per dag.

BBC News: na stemming neemt VN rapport Goldstone aan
The UN human rights body has endorsed a report into Israel's offensive in Gaza which accuses both Israel and Palestinian militants of war crimes.
The report by Richard Goldstone calls for credible investigations by Israel and Hamas, and international war crimes prosecutions if they fail to do that. Both Israel and the US opposed endorsement of the report, saying it would set back Middle East peace hopes.
The vote was 25 to six for the resolution. Eleven countries abstained. The Palestinian Authority initially backed deferring a vote, but changed its position after domestic criticism. The US has dubbed the report "flawed", but has still urged - along with the UK and France - both sides to launch independent investigations.

WEBLOG Underground

Buurten in Jeruzalem
Met Jara en Tamer ga ik naar een 'underground' festival in de oude stad van Jeruzalem. Onze buurvrouw zegt: "Jammer, dat je niet met je vrouw kan", want Mary heeft geen vergunning. De plekken waar het festival wordt gehouden blijven geheim. Een en ander wordt georganiseerd in het kader van "Al-Quds hoofdstad van de Arabische cultuur", een evenement dat door Israël niet wordt erkend en toegelaten. Het festival is daarom decentraal georganiseerd, met kleine evenementen in particuliere huizen. Het woord 'underground' doet denken aan de eerste Intifada van eind jaren tachtig, toen de Palestijnen 'ondergronds onderwijs' organiseerden buiten de scholen om, die toen voor lange tijd op last van het leger gesloten waren.
Ook al is het een beetje uit de nood geboren, het ondergrondse festival is een mooi idee. Ik heb het gevoel dat we gaan buurten. Merlijn Twaalfhoven, met zijn collega’s van La Vie sur Terre de initiatiefnemer, zegt dat je de stenen van de huizen moet laten spreken. Met alle historische bezienswaardigheden in de oude stad vergeet je bijna dat er ook nog gewone mensen achter de gevels wonen.

Bestook Lieberman met kritische vragen!

Deze week brengt de Israëlische minister voor Buitenlandse Zaken Avigdor Lieberman, leider van de extreemrechtse partij Israel Beitenu, (Israël Ons Huis) een bezoek aan Nederland. Lieberman staat te boek als een stokebrand die de afgelopen jaren met zijn partij de verhoudingen tussen Israëli’s en Palestijnen verder op scherp zette, zowel in Israël als in de bezette Palestijnse gebieden. Hij schroomt niet zich in het openbaar uiterst denigrerend over Palestijnen uit te laten en deinst er evenmin voor terug openlijk doelbewust provocerende wetsvoorstellen in te dienen. Zo betoogde hij bijvoorbeeld dat Palestijnse Knessetleden verantwoordelijk waren voor de terroristische aanval op een religieuze joodse school.

Settlements are fertile ground for Jewish terror

The parade of the self-righteous got underway Sunday night: Yaakov Tytell was described as a "foreign element," "wild thorn" and "rotten apple." Even if he acted alone, spoke and hallucinated in English, even if he was mentally disturbed, as his attorney claimed, it does not change the fact that Jack the Ripper from the West Bank settlement of Shvut Rachel - contrary to his predecessor in London - acted on ground that was fertile like no other.
Yes, the settlements and especially the illegal outposts where Tytell lived and hid his weapons, along with the Kahanist settlement of Kfar Tapuah where he got his start - these are the places for such dangerous nuts. This is their refuge, where they can hide arms without being bothered and go on hate-filled killing sprees without being seen.

America, stop sucking up to Israel

Barack Obama has been busy - offering the Jewish People blessings for Rosh Hashanah, and recording a flattering video for the President's Conference in Jerusalem and another for Yitzhak Rabin's memorial rally. Only Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah surpasses him in terms of sheer output of recorded remarks.
In all the videos, Obama heaps sticky-sweet praise on Israel, even though he has spent nearly a year fruitlessly lobbying for Israel to be so kind as to do something, anything - even just a temporary freeze on settlement building - to advance the peace process.
The president's Mideast envoy, George Mitchell, has also been busy, shuttling between a funeral (for IDF soldier Asaf Ramon, the son of Israel's first astronaut Ilan Ramon) and a memorial (for Rabin, though it was postponed until next week due to rain), in order to find favor with Israelis. Polls have shown that Obama is increasingly unpopular here, with an approval rating of only 6 to 10 percent.

Israel's attacks will lead to its isolation

Israel has been dealing one blow after another to the rest of the world. While China has still not recovered from Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's absence from the reception at its Tel Aviv embassy - a serious punishment for China's support for the Goldstone report - France is licking its wounds after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "vetoed" a visit by the French foreign minister to Gaza. And Israel has dealt another blow: Its ambassador in Washington, Michael Oren, will boycott the conference next week of the new Israel lobby J Street.
China, France and J Street will somehow get by despite these boycotts, Turkey will also recover from the great vacationers' revolt, and we can expect that even the Swedes and Norwegians will recover from Israel's loud reprimands. But a country that attacks and boycotts everyone who does not exactly agree with its official positions will become isolated, forsaken and detestable: North Korea of today or Albania of yesterday. It's actually quite strange for Israel to use this weapon, as it is about to turn into the victim of boycotts itself.

Lucky pasta

Lucky pasta! When an American senator discovered Israel bans importing pasta into the Gaza Strip, a storm broke out. And ever since, senior Israeli defense officials have included noodles on their list of permitted products. And calves, how did we forget them? That was approved by the highest levels of the Defense Ministry. After all, the bureaucrat-officers would never have dared violate the siege directives.
But notebooks, textbooks, pens and pencils - whose lack is felt by Gaza's children due to the Israeli ban on letting "luxuries" into the Strip - have no well-fed public relations agents like pasta and calves did. Do Gaza's children need to draw or do their homework?
All right, forget about the pens. But what about the Gazan father whose Israeli son is being barred from visiting him by Israeli generals, after not seeing each other for seven years? What about the son being barred by those who carry out the orders from bidding his dying mother farewell in Jordan, or the engaged woman being barred from going to the West Bank to marry? Clearly, the wedding is a Palestinian plot to alter the demographic balance.

Only gall and nothing more

Is the discourse we are conducting - if indeed we are conducting any discourse among ourselves and with our interlocutor - legitimate at all? Ever since the territories were occupied a public debate has been going on here about their future and what is being done there. The questions have come and gone, all of them in the same cursed vein: To give? To concede? Under what conditions? In exchange for what? The settlements - yes or no; the roadblocks - yes or no; the assassinations, the arrests, the starving, the closure, the encirclement, the curfew, the exposure, the torture, the freedom of movement, the choice or the ritual - yes or no.
An excellent example was provided this week by Jerusalem police chief Aharon Franco, who said that the city's Muslims were "ungrateful." For what? We gave them - here we have that word "gave" again - permission to pray at the Temple Mount and they replied with violence.

BUITEN HET NIEUWS Facebook

Facebook telt vriendschappen tussen inwoners van Israël en Palestina

De sociale netwerksite Facebook telt sinds dinsdag het aantal vriendschappen die afgesloten worden tussen mensen van verschillende landen, verschillende geloofsovertuigingen en verschillende politieke strekkingen. Daarmee wil Facebook vrede promoten.
De cijfertjes die peace.facebook.com toont geven het aantal connecties weer tussen mensen van bijvoorbeeld verschillende landen die de afgelopen 24 uur vrienden zijn geworden op de netwerksite. Tussen inwoners van Griekenland en Turkije werden er 13.790 nieuwe vriendschappen gesmeed, tussen India en Pakistan 7.339 en tussen Israël en Palestina 5158. Facebook telde ook 71.555 nieuwe vriendschappen tussen moslims en christenen de afgelopen dag en 667 vriendschappen tussen soennieten en sjiieten.
