Slim majority of US Jews want war on Iran: Poll
Press TV - A poll shows that Jewish Americans who favor a military strike on Iran over its nuclear program barely outnumber those against such an attack.
When asked "whether the US should militarily attack Iran if it is on the verge of developing nuclear weapons," 41% of some 800 respondents across the Jewish community answered in the affirmative, 40% in the negative and 16% abstained, Ha'aretz reported.
Despite the margin being narrow, the leaning towards a military strike against the Islamic republic is largely viewed as a result of the Israeli Lobby's influence on Washington and the Jewish population in the United Sates.
Earlier in the month, the chairman-designate of the US National Intelligence Council, Charles W. Freeman, declined to take the post citing the Israeli grip as a reason. Freeman blamed the "unscrupulous people" of the lobby for "outrageous agitation" and "character assassination" to prevent his appointment given his outspoken criticism of Israel and the US support for the Jewish entity.
In line with the signature Tel Aviv mentality, the Lobby has been reportedly trying to secure the previous administration's hawkish way of dealing with Iran's nuclear program.
This is while, President Barack Obama has promised to change the trend and has signaled willingness to move toward 'face-to-face dialogue' on the issue with Iranian officials without preconditions.
The idea of holding dialogue with Tehran was supported by 39% of those surveyed; however, 37% favored more sanctions on the country.
The opponents of the military action reportedly voiced concerns that a war on Iran may develop into a quagmire hard for the US to climb out of, saying that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their concomitant losses and disillusionment could serve as cautionary tales.
The Jewish Americans supporting such an attack, however, did not rule out the likelihood that Iran might use the nuclear technology to acquire weapons, -- a notion designed and developed by Tel Aviv and its closest ally, Washington
The west, spearheaded by the US and Israel, accuse Iran, a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of envisaging a military use for its nuclear program, calling on the country to halt its uranium enrichment activities.
This is while the latest report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that Iran has managed to enrich uranium-235 to a level "less than 5 percent" while producing nuclear arms requires an enrichment level of above 90 percent.
The poll was conducted from February 28 to March 8 by J Street, the Jewish-dominated Washington-based advocacy group which reportedly promotes change in the US Middle East approaches.'
