ISRAELI OFFICIAL RULES OUT GOLAN WITHDRAWAL
By Dina Kraft in Tel AvivPublished: July 10 2009, Financial Times (UK)
Israel will not withdraw entirely from the Golan Heights even as part of a peace deal with Syria, the country's national security adviser said on Friday.
"If there is a territorial compromise, it is one that still leaves Israel on the Golan Heights and deep into the Golan Heights," said Uzi Arad, considered the closest adviser to Benjamin Netanyahu, prime minister.
But Damascus should know that neither this government nor the majority of Israelis would agree to a complete withdrawal, he said, since that would compromise national security, water and settlement needs.
Mark Regev, a spokesman for Mr Netanyahu, said of Mr Arad's comments: " When he speaks, he is representing the thinking of the government."
The plateau overlooking the Sea of Galilee was taken from Syria during the 1967 six-day war and annexed by Israel in 1981, a move the international community has not recognised.
Syria insists the Golan's return is the primary condition for a peace deal.
Last year, Turkey mediated in indirect talks between both sides under Ehud Olmert, Mr Netanyahu's predecessor, but this ended after Israel's December action in the Gaza Strip.
Mr Arad's comments come amid a US drive to encourage a Syrian-Israeli peace deal and to improve Washington's ties with Damascus. Obama administration officials have called for comprehensive Arab-Israeli talks, including Syria, and have indicated the US would be prepared to help broker a deal between Syria and Israel.
Any divergences between the US and Israel on Syria could further strain a relationship tested by Barack Obama's call for a freeze on the expansion of settlements in the occupied territories.
Before 1967, Syria used the Golan Heights to shell Israeli kibbutzim and towns. The plateau, with rolling hills that stretch across 1,250km, has become a popular tourist destination in Israel.
In water-scarce Israel, it is coveted for rivers and streams that feed into the Sea of Galilee, Israel's only freshwater lake and most important water source.

Israeli Warships Cross Suez Canal, Tuesday, July 14, 2009
Two Israeli warships passed through the Suez Canal today, an unusual move long believed to have been ruled out in order to prevent observation of nuclear warheads that might secretly be carried on the nation's military vessels, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, July 9).
One of the Israeli vessels, the Hanit, traversed the canal twice last month, one source said, adding that the June event marked an Israeli battleship's first use of the key Egyptian passage (see GSN, July 8).
An Israeli submarine last month traveled through the canal, accompanied by ships from the Egyptian navy, on its way to drills in the Red Sea. Egypt and Israel hoped in that instance to demonstrate cooperation in addressing Iran's disputed nuclear activities, according to the Yediot Aharonot newspaper.
Israel is widely thought to possess nuclear weapons, but has never publicly confirmed that assertion (Agence France-Presse/Google News, July 14).

An al-Jazeera reporter who was imprisoned in Guantánamo Bay plans to launch a joint legal action with other detainees against former US president George Bush and other administration officials, for the illegal detention and torture he and others suffered at the hands of US authorities.

(AFP/Pool/File/Brennan Linsley)The case will be initiated by the Guantánamo Justice Center, a new organization open to former prisoners at the US base, which will set up its international headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, later this month.
"The purpose of our organization is to open a case against the Bush administration," said co-founder Sami al-Haj, an al-Jazeera reporter from Sudan who was illegally detained by US authorities for over six years. He was freed in May 2008 (lees verder the Guardian)
