Israelis and Iranians Protest Together U.S
War- mongering in election campaigns
Young Israeli and Iranian peace activists will demonstrate jointly this
Saturday in front of the American Embassy in Berlin in
protest of the foreign policy both US presidential candidates
This coming Saturday, the Berlin-based grassroots organization “Iranian-Israeli Circle against War, Sanctions, Occupation and State Repression” will hold its second demonstration against the threat of war in the Middle East. The group, composed of young Israeli and Iranian activists, first drew international attention after marching in Berlin to protest Germany’s contribution to the escalating conflicts in the Middle East while simultaneously intensifying state oppression and occupation in Iran and Israel (For English coverage, see Haaretz’s report: http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/israelis-iranians-meet-in-berlin-to-protest-war-speak-iran-sanctions-1.428295 )
The demonstration planned for this Saturday, November 3rd at 15:00 in front of the American Embassy in Berlin (Pariserplatz) will be held under the slogan “Their Politics- Our Lives. This is where we draw the line!”. This demonstration will thematize and challenge the dangerous stance both Mitt Romney and President Obama have put forth in their presidential bids. The official press release of this demonstration specifically calls out Romney’s and Obama’s rhetorical appeals to “Israeli ‘security’ and Iranian liberation from tyranny as alibis for their mutual platforms of inhumane economic sanctions and war-posturing and thus have instrumentally politicized Israel and Iran in order to cynically sway US voters.“
The goal of this demonstration is to amplify the voices of those people whose lives are located or connected to Israel and Iran in order to counter the loud political theatre half a world away: “We, as Iranians and Israelis, who would, as others in the region, be immediately affected by such policies, regardless of the outcome of the US elections, oppose this new imperialism in the form of illegitimate intervention by foreign powers in the future of our countries and societies. Our opposition is as strong as our support for the uprisings of the people of the Middle East who are the only legitimate force to determine their own future”.
As seen in a Youtube clip the group members have made especially for the demo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME4lsyTqJI8 ), the critique is not only aimed against US or European foreign politics, but also again the repressive politics of both Israeli and Iranian regimes and
their common interests in aggravating the political situation.
