Herr Ratzinger in his role as pope of the roman katholic church.
'Father of Lies: The Pope's Genocidal Revisionism
Written by Chris Floyd
Almost no one in the West seems to have noticed the truly perverse and morally obscene remarks made by Pope Benedict in Brazil. But genocide scholar Adam Jones at CounterPunch noticed, and calls out Herr Ratzinger for his remarkable historical revisionism, which paints the genocidal destruction of America's pre-Columbus cultures as a "purifying" act which gave the natives just what they were "longing" for. In this outburst, the conservative cleric and former Hitler Youth far surpasses revisionists like David Irving in whitewashing mass murder, slavery and military aggression.
Ask Pope Benedict: When Does Genocide Purify? (CounterPunch)Excerpts: On the last day of his visit, in the city of Aparecida, the Pope "touch[ed] on a sensitive historical episode," in the blandly understated language of an Associated Press dispatch (May 13). In other words, he ripped the bandages off a still-suppurating wound. According to the official text of Benedict's comments on the Vatican website, the Pope declared that "the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean" were "silently longing" to receive Christ as their savior. He was "the unknown God whom their ancestors were seeking, without realizing it ..." Colonization by Spain and Portugal was not a conquest, but rather an "adoption" of the Indians through baptism, making their cultures "fruitful" and "purifying" them. Accordingly, "the proclamation of Jesus and of his Gospel did not at any point involve an alienation of the pre-Columbian cultures, nor was it the imposition of a foreign culture."'

Would you care to cite any evidence that the Catholic Church engaged in forced conversions or had anything whatsoever to do with any alleged “genocide” in Latin America? The Counterpunch article makes this baseless claim based on this:
http://www.ushmm.org/conscience/analysis/details.php?content=2004-02-26
Insofar as the above link concerns the Church, it has the following:
“There was also a ’subtle kind of cultural genocide’ committed by the Spanish missions which abounded in Mexico, California, Louisiana and elsewhere. Lemkin notes that ‘while most of the Indians may not have been converted by actual force, it may well be assumed that they had little idea of either Christianity or the life and burdens in store for them after baptism’. Once they yielded to the admonitions of the fathers, their fate was sealed, they could no longer escape from the reach of the church, or the mission. The missionaries, for example in a church in San Francisco, gave mass in Latin and Spanish, and made no effort to learn the native tongue.”
Celebrating Mass in Latin and Spanish but not the Indians’ native tongue is “genocide”??? And this is from a far left source and, as such, is I assume the most inculpating evidence that exists against the Church. The brutality of the pre-Christian Indian cultures was, everyone agrees, horrifying — human sacrifices, brutal slavery, mass killings, etc. No wonder the Indians converted so readily when they were told of Christ. Pope Benedict was right.
Where a better case that a serious crime was committed against the native Indians is precisely where the Catholic Church did not predominate: North America. Ever wonder why still today one sees native Americans all over Latin America but not North America? It is because the Americans, unlike the Catholic Spanish, either killed the Indians or shunted them off to reservations.
read stolen continents, conquest and resistance in the america's by ronald wright and 1491 new revelations of the americas before columbus by charles c. mann. you will see how disastrous the roman catholic peoples were for the indians. they destroyed forever whole civilisations. that the protestant people were horrible is true, but the roman catholics were not better in any way. herr ratzinger should not forget this. he should be more modest, his skygod is one among many gods other peoples believe in.
