How ‘Firing Zone’ Designations are Weaponized to Dispossess Palestinians
The South Hebron Hills in Area C has been at the center of policies of displacement and dispossession in the West Bank. Now, the fate of several Palestinian communities located there rests in the hands of Israel’s Supreme Court, which is expected to reach a decision in the coming months as to whether or not their residents will be expelled from the area.

In the early 1980s, Masafer Yatta, an area in the South Hebron Hills that is home to 12 Palestinian villages, was declared a military firing zone by the Israeli government--now known as Firing Zone 918. In the late 1990s, the military expelled all Palestinian residents of the 12 communities on the basis that they were illegally residing in a firing zone. After the expulsion, the Israeli Supreme Court issued an “interim injunction” enabling villagers to return to their land but denying them the right to build on their property. For the past 20 years, the residents of Masafer Yatta have been in limbo, unable to construct homes or build essential forms of infrastructure such as power and water.

Please join Ori Givati of Breaking the Silence, who will offer a critical analysis regarding how Firing Zone 918 is part of a continuous trend of de facto annexation. We will explore the potential impact of the upcoming court decision and will also be joined by Palestinian residents of Masafer Yatta who will offer their testimonies of day-to-day life while facing the looming threat of permanent expulsion from their homes.
