'Goudprijs stijgt naar recordhoogte

De goudprijs is vanochtend gestegen tot 1.047 dollar per ounce (31,1 gram), de hoogste prijs tot nu toe. Het is een van de vele recente signalen die duiden op een voorzichtig herstel van de financiële markten. De beurskoersen stegen vanmorgen tot een van de hoogste niveaus sinds de kredietcrisis in volle hevigheid toesloeg.

Bedrijfsleningen worden verhandeld tegen de beste prijzen sinds het omvallen van zakenbank Lehman Brothers. Staatsobligaties blijven zo in trek dat hun effectieve rente laag blijft, ondanks het vooruitzicht van torenhoge overheidstekorten en een oplopende staatsschuld.

De oliemarkt herstelt op prijzen van rond 70 dollar per vat. Grondstoffen, van thee tot graan, noteren uitstekende prijzen. En als te midden van al dat goede nieuws de eerste centrale bank van betekenis, die van Australië, sinds de kredietcrisis haar rentes verhoogt gaat er geen traditionele golf van schrik door de markten, maar een nauw verholen gejuich.

De stemming op de financiële markten is op het oog makkelijk uit te leggen als een teken dat het kennelijk veel beter gaat met de wereldeconomie. Oplopende prijzen duiden optimisme. Maar wacht even: is het wel normaal dat alles tegelijk in waarde stijgt? Dat is het niet. Normaal schipperen beleggers tussen verschillende klassen van activa, naarmate de diagnose van de economie varieert. Maar de bewegingen op de financiële markten wijzen nu op een economische groei die zowel aantrekt als terugvalt, en een verwachte inflatie die tegelijk oploopt en daalt. Alleen op de valutamarkt is de mars opwaarts niet eenduidig: munten kunnen logischerwijs niet allemaal omhoog of naar beneden.'

Zo ken ik hem weer, mijn grote vriend Maarten Schinkel die jarenlang niet voorzag dat de financiele crisis het logische gevolg zou zijn van het speculatiekapitalisme en die tot het laatst toe bleef volhouden dat het allemaal niet zo erg was als het leek, tot de financiele bom onvermijdelijk barstte. Maarten blonk altijd uit in het vooral verzwijgen van hoe de kaarten geschud worden. Daarom zit hij ook op de plaats waar hij zit, bij de NRC als zelfbenoemde woordvoerder voor het bedrijfsleven. Wat verzwijgt Schinkel op dit moment? Het volgende zoals bericht door een serieuze journalist:

Zou dit door Fisk onthulde feit de dollar onder druk zetten? Ja, natuurlijk! En zodra er grote veranderingen dreigen te gaan optreden in de waarde van --tot voor kort -- 's werelds belangrijkste munteenheid dan stijgt logischerwijze de goudprijs naar een recordhoogte. Dat voorspelde mij zeven jaar geleden in New York een van 's werelds voornaamste goudhandelaren: mr Gold himself (volgens The New York Times), Jim Sinclair. De uitgeslapen Sinclair vertelde me toen dat de goudprijs nog voor 2010 tot boven de 1000 dollar per troy ounce zou stijgen en wel omdat -- zoals hij letterlijk verklaarde -- 'men niet eeuwig ongestraft in lucht kan handelen'. Op een gegeven moment dient men zijn toevlucht te zoeken in waardevaste zaken, zoals goud altijd geweest is.

Dit publiceerdee ik op 17 februari van dit jaar:

4. Own gold.
5. Consider that good gold shares of non-US companies incorporated in a non-US country, operating in a third country and traded on multiple exchanges are a means of money expatriation legally and in broad daylight if required.
6. For currencies, all you can do is own a spread held by a true custodialship wherever that might be.
Simply said, as of Friday February 13th, 2009 the situation is confirmed as being in "Out of Control" mode as this well engineered downward spiral enters into its terminal phase.
The root cause of this mess was profit and the degree of disintegration it caused in the pursuit of this goal was not anticipated.
The key event that set things in motion was when Lehman was flushed - all hell broke loose. The hell cannot be contained in any practical manner.
I seek nothing of you but the protection of yourselves.

Mijn plan voor Jeruzalem

SEPTEMBER 2009 -
Momenteel werk ik aan een project in Jeruzalem. In huiskamers, keukens, badhuizen en schoollokalen zullen musici, dichters en acteurs korte voorstellingen maken geïnspireerd op het verhaal van de bewoners.

Tijdens de voorbereiding kreeg ik een merkwaardige brief van mijn partnerorganisatie, een theater in Oost-Jeruzalem. De directeur vroeg me om duidelijk te verklaren dat mijn project geen deel zou uitmaken van het 'vredesproces'. We hadden vanaf het begin gesproken over de bijdrage die het project zou kunnen leveren aan het begrip en contact tussen mensen uit verschillende culturen en religies. Hij was het hier steeds mee eens geweest. Waarom moest ik dan verklaren dat het doel van het project niet het brengen van vrede was? Wat kon daar mis mee zijn? Is het Vredesproces misschien een club waar je lid van kunt worden of een geloof dat conflicteert met het zijne?

Het bleek dat hij jarenlang kunstprojecten heeft gemaakt waarin Palestijnen en Israëliërs zich gezamenlijk voor vrede inzetten en een boodschap communiceerden van gelijkwaardigheid en contact. Het bleek echter dat in deze tijd van hoop en optimisme de bezetting juist steeds grimmiger werd, talloze kolonisten zich in Oost-Jeruzalem en op de Westelijke Jordaanoever vestigden en zo een vredesakkoord onmogelijk maakten. De kunstenaars waren gebruikt bij het vertekenen van de werkelijkheid en bleken deel te zijn van een propagandamechanisme waarin het beeld van Israël als land van vrede in stand gehouden moest worden.

Tegenwoordig willen Palestijnse kunstenaars daarom niet met Israëliërs werken. Ze weigeren hoop te geven als dat niet gepaard gaat met concrete vooruitgang. Pech voor de talloze westerse idealistische musici en theatermakers die, vaak met een flinke buidel geld onder de arm, een mooi idee hebben voor de vrede. Pech voor mij, want verschillende journalisten en documentairemakers die ik de laatste tijd benaderd heb hebben geen interesse in het project zolang er niet zowel Palestijnen als Israëliërs aan deelnemen.

Ik had misschien verwacht in Jeruzalem alleen maar dramatische personages aan te treffen uit een spannend verhaal dat zich vooral in de kranten en de televisiejournaals afspeelt. Het blijkt dat er mensen wonen zoals jij en ik, mensen die weigeren een symbool te zijn. Mijn project wordt daarom nu geen statement of metafoor maar een stukje Echtheid, een ontmoeting met de alledaagsheid van een stad die op het punt staat te bezwijken aan een overdosis geschiedenis.

NAZARETH // Tension over control of the Haram al Sharif compound of mosques in Jerusalem’s Old City has reached a pitch unseen since clashes at the site sparked the second intifada nine years ago.

Ten days of intermittently bloody clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces in Jerusalem culminated yesterday in warnings by Palestinian officials that Israel was “sparking a fire” in the city. Israel’s Jerusalem Post newspaper similarly wondered whether a third intifada was imminent.

Israel deployed 20,000 police to safeguard the annual Jerusalem march, which was reported to have attracted a crowd of 70,000 passing through sensitive Palestinian neighbourhoods close to the Old City.

The ostensible cause of friction is Israel’s religious holidays that have brought Jewish worshippers to the Western Wall, located next to the Haram al Sharif and traditionally considered the holiest site in Judaism. The wall is the only remnant of the Jewish temple destroyed by Herod in AD70.

At a deeper level for Palestinians, however, the ease with which Jews can access sites in and around Jerusalem, while the city is off-limits to the vast majority of Palestinians, highlights the extent to which Palestinian control over Jerusalem and its holy places has been eroded by four decades of occupation.

That point was reinforced on Sunday when the gates to the mosque compound were shut by Israeli police, who cited safety concerns for 30,000 Jews praying at the Western Wall for Succot.

Jerusalem’s police chief, Aharon Franco, also incensed Palestinians on Monday by castigating them for being “ungrateful” after Israel had allowed them to pray at Al Aqsa during Ramadan. In fact, only a small proportion of Palestinians can reach the mosque. Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza cannot get past Israel’s separation wall, and the 1.5 million Palestinians in Israel and Jerusalem are finding it harder to pray there.

Yesterday, police allowed women and Palestinian men with Israeli identification showing they were over the age of 50 to enter.

Both the Palestinian Authority and Jordan issued statements this week warning that Jewish groups, some of whom want to blow up the mosques, should be prevented from entering the Haram.

It was in this context that the leader of the Islamic Movement inside Israel, Sheikh Raed Salah, called on Israel’s Palestinian citizens to “shield the [Al Aqsa] mosque with their bodies”.

Palestinian concerns are not without foundation. Israel’s religious and secular leaders have been staking an ever-stronger claim to sovereignty over the compound since the occupation began, despite an original agreement to leave control with Islamic authorities.

The rabbinical consensus since the Middle Ages has been that Jews are forbidden from entering the compound for fear of desecrating the site of the temple’s inner sanctum, whose location is unknown.

But even as the Israeli army captured the Old City in 1967, its chief rabbi, Shlomo Goren, rushed to the Haram to read from the Bible and blow a ram’s horn, as the ancient temple priests had once done.

With official backing, Jewish settlers have been confiscating and buying Palestinian homes in and around the Old City’s Muslim Quarter, including next to the mosques.

They have also been assisted by Israeli archeologists in digging extensively under the quarter. Tensions over the excavations escalated dramatically in 1996 when Benjamin Netanyahu, prime minister then as now, approved the opening of the Western Wall tunnels under the mosques. In the ensuing violence, at least 70 Palestinians were killed.

In 2000, Ehud Barak, the Israeli prime minister at the time, raised Palestinian apprehensions further at the Camp David talks by demanding – against all Jewish teachings – that the compound be declared the “Holy of Holies”, a status reserved for the temple’s inner sanctum.

Islamic sovereignty was challenged again in 2003 when Israeli police opened the compound to non-Muslims. In practice, this has given messianic cults, who want the mosques destroyed to make way for a third temple, access under police protection.

It was precisely rumours that Jewish extremists had entered the compound on the eve of Judaism’s holiest day, Yom Kippur, that provided the spark triggering the latest round of clashes.

A growing number of settler rabbis want the injunction against Jews praying there lifted, adding to Palestinian fears that Israeli officials, rabbis, settlers and fundamentalists are conspiring to engineer a final takeover of the Haram al Sharif.

Secret meetings have already been held by finance ministers and central bank governors in Russia, China, Japan and Brazil to work on the scheme, which will mean that oil will no longer be priced in dollars.

The plans, confirmed to The Independent by both Gulf Arab and Chinese banking sources in Hong Kong, may help to explain the sudden rise in gold prices, but it also augurs an extraordinary transition from dollar markets within nine years.

The Americans, who are aware the meetings have taken place – although they have not discovered the details – are sure to fight this international cabal which will include hitherto loyal allies Japan and the Gulf Arabs. Against the background to these currency meetings, Sun Bigan, China's former special envoy to the Middle East, has warned there is a risk of deepening divisions between China and the US over influence and oil in the Middle East. "Bilateral quarrels and clashes are unavoidable," he told the Asia and Africa Review. "We cannot lower vigilance against hostility in the Middle East over energy interests and security."

This sounds like a dangerous prediction of a future economic war between the US and China over Middle East oil – yet again turning the region's conflicts into a battle for great power supremacy. China uses more oil incrementally than the US because its growth is less energy efficient. The transitional currency in the move away from dollars, according to Chinese banking sources, may well be gold. An indication of the huge amounts involved can be gained from the wealth of Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar who together hold an estimated $2.1 trillion in dollar reserves.

The decline of American economic power linked to the current global recession was implicitly acknowledged by the World Bank president Robert Zoellick. "One of the legacies of this crisis may be a recognition of changed economic power relations," he said in Istanbul ahead of meetings this week of the IMF and World Bank. But it is China's extraordinary new financial power – along with past anger among oil-producing and oil-consuming nations at America's power to interfere in the international financial system – which has prompted the latest discussions involving the Gulf states.

Brazil has shown interest in collaborating in non-dollar oil payments, along with India. Indeed, China appears to be the most enthusiastic of all the financial powers involved, not least because of its enormous trade with the Middle East.

China imports 60 per cent of its oil, much of it from the Middle East and Russia. The Chinese have oil production concessions in Iraq – blocked by the US until this year – and since 2008 have held an $8bn agreement with Iran to develop refining capacity and gas resources. China has oil deals in Sudan (where it has substituted for US interests) and has been negotiating for oil concessions with Libya, where all such contracts are joint ventures.

Furthermore, Chinese exports to the region now account for no fewer than 10 per cent of the imports of every country in the Middle East, including a huge range of products from cars to weapon systems, food, clothes, even dolls. In a clear sign of China's growing financial muscle, the president of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, yesterday pleaded with Beijing to let the yuan appreciate against a sliding dollar and, by extension, loosen China's reliance on US monetary policy, to help rebalance the world economy and ease upward pressure on the euro.

Ever since the Bretton Woods agreements – the accords after the Second World War which bequeathed the architecture for the modern international financial system – America's trading partners have been left to cope with the impact of Washington's control and, in more recent years, the hegemony of the dollar as the dominant global reserve currency.

The Chinese believe, for example, that the Americans persuaded Britain to stay out of the euro in order to prevent an earlier move away from the dollar. But Chinese banking sources say their discussions have gone too far to be blocked now. "The Russians will eventually bring in the rouble to the basket of currencies," a prominent Hong Kong broker told The Independent. "The Brits are stuck in the middle and will come into the euro. They have no choice because they won't be able to use the US dollar."

Chinese financial sources believe President Barack Obama is too busy fixing the US economy to concentrate on the extraordinary implications of the transition from the dollar in nine years' time. The current deadline for the currency transition is 2018.

The US discussed the trend briefly at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh; the Chinese Central Bank governor and other officials have been worrying aloud about the dollar for years. Their problem is that much of their national wealth is tied up in dollar assets.

"These plans will change the face of international financial transactions," one Chinese banker said. "America and Britain must be very worried. You will know how worried by the thunder of denials this news will generate."

A few months after Saddam Hussein trumpeted his decision, the Americans and British invaded Iraq.

Op de bovenste foto's ziet u de 69-jarige Nancy Pelosi, voorzitter van het Huis van Afgevaardigden, flirten met de 20 jaar jongere Rahm Emanuel, chef-staf van het Witte Huis, die de soms smerige klusjes opknapt voor president Obama. U ziet hoe de van origine Israelische Emauel de bejaarde Amerikaanse grootmoeder Pelosi met zijn mannelijke charmes politiek onschadelijk maakt. Zo werkt dat in de politiek, bij uitstek het territorium van vooral machtsbeluste mannen. Wil een vrouw hogerop komen in het door mannen gedomineerde spel dan dienen de vrouwen ook de dominante cultuur over te nemen, waarbij het vrouwtje natuurlijk gewillig moet reageren op de hoofdaapjes. Het feit dat de zwaar gebotoxte mevrouw Pelosi qua leeftijd de moeder kon zijn van Emanuel, speelt in die wereld geen rol. Zij weet haar plaats in een mannenwereld en speelt haar rol navenant. Zo heeft ze het tot voorzitter geschopt. De hoogbejaarde blijft de pin-up spelen.

Nu dat andere vrouwtje: Heleen Mees, die eigenlijk anders heet, maar zelfs haar naam heeft aangepast. Ook zij speelt het sexy vrouwtje. Ze wil namelijk hogerop, ze wordt gedreven door een brandende ambitie. En ook zij weet welke rol ze moet spelen. Net als bij Pelosi die, als voorzitter van het Huis van Afgevaardigden, wordt afgebeeld als een hoogbejaarde pin-up, roept ook het gedrag van Mees ogenblikkelijk seksueel getinte reacties op, zoals blijkt uit onder andere een tv-bespreking van NRC's Hans Beerenkamp: 'De finale was het visuele hoogtepunt van het weekeinde. (van de Eurovisiesongfestival). In die categorie verdient ook het opzienbarende decolleté van Heleen Mees in Vrouw & Paard (VARA)

vermelding. Zo zie je ze niet vaak in talkshows.' Inderdaad, het waren haar alles behalve opzienbarende borsten en niet haar denkbeelden die bij mannen als Beerenkamp opzien baarden.

En ook de wat minder intellectuele buitenwereld laat zich niet onbetuigt, gezien deze reacties op een interview met Mees voorzien van foto's zoals hierboven, gepubliceerd in een glossy magazine:

Het zijn de voor de hand liggende, onvermijdelijke reacties op een vrouw die haar seksualiteit in de strijd gooit om hogerop te komen in een door mannen gedomineerde cultuur. Het is ook daarom dat ik stel niet al te serieus op haar prietpraat in te gaan. We hebben te maken met een geval dat onverzadigbaar op zoek is naar bevestiging en eenzaam ouder wordt.

Er zijn veel poseurs in onze tijd. ( posturing) behave in a way that is intended to impress or mislead others : a masking of fear with macho posturing.

UN must immediately adopt and act on Goldstone report

Palestinian civil society has strongly and almost unanimously condemned the Palestinian Authority's latest decision to delay adoption by the UN Human Rights Council of the report prepared by the UN Fact-Finding Mission, headed by justice Richard Goldstone, into the recent Israeli war of aggression against the Palestinian people in the occupied Gaza Strip. A common demand in almost all Palestinian statements issued in this respect was for the UN to adopt the report and act without undue delay on its recommendations in order to bring an end to Israel's criminal impunity and to hold it accountable before international law for its war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza and, indeed, all over the occupied Palestinian territory.

Succumbing to US pressures and unabashed Israeli blackmail, the president of the PA himself reportedly was himself responsible for the decision to defer discussion at the Council of the Goldstone report, dashing the hopes of Palestinians everywhere as well as of international human rights organizations and solidarity movements that Israel will finally face a long overdue process of legal accountability and that its victims will have a measure of justice. This decision by the PA, which in effect delays adoption of the report at least until March 2010, giving Israel a golden opportunity to bury it with US, European, Arab and now Palestinian complicity, constitutes the most blatant case yet of PA betrayal of Palestinian rights and surrender to Israeli dictates.

This is not the first time, though, that the PA has acted under orders from Washington and threats from Tel Aviv against the express interests of the Palestinian people. The historic advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice in July 2004 that found Israel's Wall and colonies built on occupied Palestinian territory illegal had presented a rare diplomatic, political and legal opportunity that could have been used to isolate Israel as apartheid South Africa was after a similar ICJ decision in 1971 against its occupation of Namibia. Alas, the PA squandered it and systematically -- quite suspiciously, actually -- failed to even call on world governments to comply with their obligations stated in the advisory opinion.

The whole clause on Israel and Palestinian rights that was to be discussed at the recent UN Durban Review Conference in Geneva was dropped after the Palestinian representative gave his green light. Efforts by non-aligned nations and the former UN General Assembly president, Father Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, to push for a UN resolution condemning Israel's war crimes in Gaza and establishing an international tribunal were thwarted mainly by the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, causing several prominent diplomats and international law experts to wonder which side the official Palestinian representative was on.

The Mercosur-Israel Free Trade Agreement was almost ratified by Brazil this last September after the Palestinian ambassador there expressed approval, only urging Brazil to exclude Israeli settlement products from the Agreement. With prompt action by Palestinian and Brazilian civil society organizations and eventually by the PLO's Executive Committee, this ratification was averted and the Brazilian parliamentary committee in charge of this file recommended that the government refrain from approving the FTA until Israel complies with international law.

In all these cases and many similar ones, the instructions to the Palestinian representatives came from Ramallah, where the PA government has illegally appropriated the PLO powers to lead Palestinian diplomacy and set foreign policy, conceding Palestinian rights and acting against the Palestinian national interests, without worrying about accountability to any elected representatives of the Palestinian people.

This latest forthright collusion of the PA in Israel's campaign to whitewash its crimes and undermine the application of international law to punish these crimes came a few days after the far-right Israeli government publicly blackmailed the PA, demanding that it withdraw its support for adopting the Goldstone report in return for "permitting" a second mobile communications provider to operate in the occupied Palestinian territory. It therefore undermines the great efforts by human rights organizations and many activists to bring justice to the Palestinian victims of Israel's latest massacre in Gaza: the more than 1400 killed (predominantly civilians); the thousands injured; the 1.5 million who are still suffering from the wanton destruction of infrastructure, educational and health institutions, factories, farm lands, power plants, and other critical facilities, and from the long criminal Israeli siege against them.

It is nothing short of a betrayal of Palestinian civil society's effective Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel, with all its recent, remarkable growth and achievements in mainstream western societies and among leading unions.

It is also betrayal of the global solidarity movement that has worked tirelessly and creatively, mainly within the framework of the fast spreading BDS campaign, to end Israel's impunity and to uphold universal human rights.

It is crucial to remember that the PA does not have any legal or democratic mandate to speak on behalf of the people of Palestine or to represent the Palestinians at the UN or any of its agencies and institutions. The current PA government has never won the necessary constitutional approval of the democratically elected Palestinian Legislative Council. Even if it had such a mandate, at best it would only represent the Palestinians living under Israel's military occupation in the West Bank and Gaza, excluding the great majority of the people of Palestine, particularly the refugees.

Only the Palestine Liberation Organization, the PLO, can theoretically claim to represent the entirety of the Palestinian people: inside historic Palestine and in exile. For such a claim to be substantiated and universally accepted by Palestinians everywhere, though, the PLO would need to be revived from the grassroots upwards, in a transparent, democratic and inclusive process that involves Palestinians everywhere and encompasses all the political parties that are outside the PLO structures today. In parallel with this democratic reclamation or popular take-back of the PLO by the people and their representative unions and institutions, the PA must beresponsibly and gradually dismantled, with its current powers, particularly the representation seats at the UN and other regional and international institutions, returned to where they belong, to the real representative of all the people of Palestine, the revived and democratized PLO. This dissolution of the PA, however, must at all times avoid creating a legal and political vacuum, as history shows that hegemonic powers are often the most likely to fill such a vacuum to the detriment of the oppressed.

The fact is the PA has been gradually and irreversibly transformed since its establishment 15 years ago from a mere -- often powerless, obsequious and coerced -- sub-contractor of the Israeli occupation regime, relieving it of its most cumbersome civil duties, like the provision of services and tax collection, and, most crucially, very effectively helping it safeguard the security of its occupation army and colonial settlers, into a willingcollaborator that constitutes Israel's most important strategic weapon in countering its growing isolation and loss of legitimacy on the world stage as a colonial and apartheid state. Israel's hundreds of nuclear weapons and its fourth largest army in the world proved impotent or at least irrelevant before the growing BDS movement, particularly after Israel's acts of genocide in Gaza. The almost unlimited diplomatic, political, economic and scientific support Israel receives from the US and European governments and its unparalleled impunity have also failed to protect it from the gloomy fate of apartheid South Africa.

Even before Israel's war on Gaza, many unions around the world had joined the BDS campaign, from Canada to South Africa, and from the UK and Norway to Brazil. After Gaza, though, the four years of preparing the ground and spreading BDS, the international shock at the sight of Israel's white phosphorus showers of death visited upon the children of Gaza cowered in UN shelters, and the universal feeling that the international order has failed to hold Israel to account or to even end its slaughter of civilians, not to mention its ongoing ethnic cleansing campaign in the occupied West Bank, particularly in East Jerusalem, BDS leaped into a new, advanced phase. It finally reached the mainstream.

In February, weeks after the end of Israel's bloodbath in Gaza, the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) made history when it refused to offload an Israeli ship in Durban. In April, the Scottish Trade Union Congress followed the lead of the South African trade union federation, COSATU, and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions in adopting BDS against Israel to bring about its compliance with international law. In May, the University and College Union (UCU), representing some 120,000 British academics, reiterated its annual support for the logic of boycott against Israel, calling for organizing an inter-union BDS conference later this year to discuss effective strategies for implementing the boycott.

Most recently, this last September, the Norwegian government's pension fund, the third largest in the world, divested from an Israeli military contractor supplying equipment to the illegal Wall in violation of the ICJ ruling. Shortly after that, a Spanish ministry excluded an Israeli academic team representing a college illegally built on occupied Palestinian land from participating in an academic competition. Also in September, the British Trades Union Congress, representing over 6.5 million workers, adopted the boycott, ushering in a new chapter in the spread of BDS that reminds observers of the beginning of the end of the apartheid regime in South Africa. According to concrete, persistent and mounting indicators, Palestinians are witnessing the arrival of their "South Africa moment."

Amidst all this comes the Goldstone report, quite surprisingly -- given the judge's strong connections with Israel and Zionism -- providing the straw that may well break the camel's back: irrefutable evidence, meticulously researched and documented, of Israel's deliberate commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Despite its clear shortcoming, this report presented Israel with the daunting and not entirely improbable prospect of standing trial at an international tribunal, a development that would effectively end Israel's impunity and open the possibility of finally applying international justice to its crimes and persistent violations of international law. In this dire context for Israel, only one strategic weapon in its arsenal could be used to fend off the foretold crushing legal and political defeat: the PA. And it did use it indeed at the right time, in a fatal way, almost killing the Goldstone report.

Ultimately, the failure of the UN Human Rights Council to adopt the Goldstone report is another proof, if any is needed, that Palestinians cannot hope at the current historical moment to obtain justice from the US-controlled so-called "international community." Only through intensified, sustainable and context-sensitive civil society campaigns of boycott and divestment can there be any hope that Israel will one day be compelled to end its lawlessness and criminal disregard of human rights and recognize the inalienable Palestinian right to self determination. This right, as expressed by the great majority of the Palestinian people, comprises ending the occupation, ending the legalized and institutionalized system of racial discrimination, or apartheid, and recognizing the fundamental, UN-sanctioned right of the Palestine refugees to return to their homes of origin, like all other refugees around the world, including Jewish refugees of World War II.

We simply cannot afford to give up on the UN, though. Human rights organizations and international civil society must continue to help the Palestinian struggle to pressure the UN, at least its General Assembly, to adopt and act upon the recommendations of the Goldstone report at all levels. If the UN fails to do so it will send an unambiguous message to Israel that its impunity remains intact and that the international community will stand by apathetically the next time it commits even more egregious crimes against the indigenous people of Palestine. This would gravely undermine the rule of law and promote in its stead the law of the jungle, where no one will be protected from total chaos and boundless carnage.

Another PA betrayal

The Palestinian Authority (PA) decision to defer until March a vote on the “Goldstone report” at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva constitutes a huge betrayal of Palestinian people.

Likewise, the stupid and disgraceful feat immensely serves the Israeli goal of covering up the Nazi-like crimes the Israeli occupation army committed during its manifestly criminal war on the Gaza Strip nine months ago.

Endorsement of the report by UNHRC would probably have paved the way for the prosecution of Israeli war criminals before the International Criminal Court (ICC) as well as International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

The PA has given a plethora of mostly mendacious pretexts to justify the scandalous act which numerous Palestinians, ordinary people as well as intellectuals, have described as an expression of national treason.

To be sure, the Palestinians had on their side a solid majority of 33-35 member-states out of the 47-member council, which means the Goldstone commission report could have been easily endorsed by the UNHRC and referred to ICC or ICJ.

Hence, the only real interpretation of the PA decision to delay a vote on the report is that the Ramallah regime wanted only to appease Israel and the Obama administration irrespective of the disastrous effects and ramifications on the Palestinian cause, especially on the unwept victims of Israeli war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

Well, if Israel can get away with murdering 1300 Palestinians and utterly destroying half of Gaza, the next holocaust would probably assume European proportions. After all, the world can’t be more Palestinian than the Palestinians themselves.

Prior to the decision, there were reports that President Obama personally intervened behind the scenes, asking the PA leadership to stop pushing for the endorsement of the report since according to him doing so would undermine “diplomatic efforts.”

Similarly, another report suggested that the PA had reached a deal with Israel whereby the apartheid Zionist regime agreed to license a business venture partially owned by wealthy businessmen linked to the PA in return for the latter agreeing to defer discussion of the Goldstone report at the UNHRC.

The PA ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Ibrahim Khreishi, was quoted as saying that the Palestinian leadership was interested in a “compromise text.”

“It will help us explain to the Israelis that the international community is with the Palestinians to achieve their hopes and dreams.”

What a stupidity! After more than 42 years of a criminal military occupation, do we still have to explain our suffering to the Israelis?

Does Mr. Khreishi really think that all the Israelis needed to desist from their Nazi-like crimes against our people was just a “convincing explanation”?

Does the PLO ambassador think a “compromise text” would make the despicable thugs and war criminals in Tel Aviv reconsider their criminal approach vis-à-vis the Palestinians?

And what does a “compromise text” mean anyway? Did Israel not commit war crimes and crimes against humanity knowingly, willfully and deliberately against innocent people in Gaza?

Didn’t Israel rain death, using state-of-the-art of the American technology of death, on unprotected civilian neighborhoods, killing and maiming thousands of innocent men, women and children?

Didn’t Israel rain white phosphorous on large parts of Gaza, incinerating innocent life all over the coastal territory?

Didn’t Israel knowingly and deliberately rain bombs from high altitudes on homes, mosques, colleges, hospitals and schools all over Gaza?

So, how could any human being with any semblance of honesty and morality try to make these crimes look less nefarious and less satanic by agreeing to adopting a “compromise text”?

Of all people in the world, we Palestinians must call the spade a spade especially when we see that proverbial spade in the hands of our grave diggers, tormentors and child killers.

The Judeo-Nazi army, navy and air force murdered our people en mass in Gaza and the West Bank. They committed their horrendous crimes in broad daylight and in full view of the entire world.

There were no extenuating circumstances or controversial accounts of what really happened. The so-called “Qassam rockets” are largely a red-herring and shouldn’t be used in the same phrase with the horrendous Israeli machine of death since the enormity and deadliness in both cases are totally incomparable.

And above all, the person who prepared the report, Richard Goldstone, is a Jew, actually a Zionist Jew, who would never overplay and exaggerate these war crimes against a virtually completely unprotected people whose very physical survival has always depended and continues to depend on the good will of the international community.

Hence, the Palestinian people, the longest-lasting victims of genocidal racism, and the entire free world around us would like to know what is it that makes the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah and its disoriented ambassador in Geneva cringe so submissively in the face of Zionist pressure?

Don’t you people have any modicum of honor and national dignity? After all, we are talking about real crimes and hundreds of children mercilessly murdered by the army of these thuggish Zionist spokespersons who are now shamelessly bragging about swaying the PA ambassador into helping the Israeli propaganda cause.

Nevertheless, it is probably unfair to pin all the blame on Khreishi, a mere functionary who had to heed the stupid instructions from Ramallah.

True, Khreishi should have resigned rather than be part to an ignominious act of national betrayal. But the ultimate villain is, of course, the Palestinian judenrat in Ramallah which has become inured to sacrificing Palestinian national interests for the sake of appeasing Israel and pleasing the Obama administration in the hope of getting a “payoff” of some kind.

Interestingly, however, the “payoff” given to the PA that we have seen so far is in the form of more Jewish settlement expansion in the West Bank, more Jewish provocations at the Al-Aqsa Mosque esplanade, and more Jewish violence and terror against unprotected Palestinian citizens in both the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

As to the Obama administration, It, too, has been “rewarding” the PA for its perfidy and betrayal of its own people by turning a blind eye to Israeli settlement expansion and by insisting that the PA resume talks with the arrogant government of Benyamin Netanyahu without any preconditions.

Well, people who don’t respect themselves don’t deserve respect from others. More over, an authority that torments, tortures and kills its own citizens in order to please the Israeli occupier and obtain from it a certificate of good conduct is utterly unqualified to be a true representative of the Palestinian people.

Finally, it is probably safe to assume that the PA dreads a thorough discussion of the Goldstone report as much as Israel does.

According to certain sources, the PA had consistently urged Israel to pursue the criminal war on the Gaza Strip to the end.

Israel is also believed to possess damning evidence showing some PA officials pleading with Israel to keep up the war on Gaza in order to crush Hamas.

Hence, it is highly likely that the PA has found itself in an exceedingly embarrassing situation, which explains why it doesn’t want to see a public discussion of the Goldstone report take place anytime soon as this would reveal many shocking and embarrassing secrets about PA connivance with Israel in carrying out the Nazi-like onslaught on the Gaza Strip.

Deze foto van mw. Nijkamp is overigens een zeer intelligente artistieke knipoog naar een renaissanceschilderij (oudroze achtergrond - spiegeling - dieprode jurk) enerzijds en Marilyn Monroe (die ook anders heette dan ze heette) op het heteluchtrooster anderzijds.

En profil blijft er echter niets aardigs (in twee opzichten) van Nijkamp over. Al vind ik het wat flauw om haar décolleté zo te becommentariëren. Zij kan op grond van wat zij zegt of schrijft afdoende aangepakt worden.

Beste AdR, laat ik proberen duidelijk te maken dat mijn opmerking dat de middelste foto 'een aardig inkijkje in de diepere drijfveren van dit 40-jarige meisje' geeft geenszins flauw bedoeld is, maar dat ik die opmerking letterlijk bedoel. Om dat duidelijk ter maken eerst even een aanloopje. Men kan de neoliberale nonsens van Heleen Mees met talloze argumenten weerleggen. Maar op een bepaald moment moet men verder gaan dan alleen ingaan op nonsens. Men moet niet blijven steken in sociale en politieke weerleggingen. Mensen die zoveel nonsens uitkramen moeten goed bestudeerd worden, vooral als mens. Men moet zo iemand als een psychologisch verschijnsel analyseren. Men moet zich afvragen: wie zegt dit allemaal en waarom? Ik bedoel, je kunt wel eeuwig blijven doorgaan met idioten serieus van repliek te dienen, maar op een gegeven moment is dat contraproductief, verspilde moeite die deze mensen alleen maar belangrijker maakt dan ze zijn. Het is interessanter hoe Mees zich publiekelijk presenteert dan wat ze te melden heeft. Laten we onze ogen gebruiken. Wat zien we? Welnu, ik citeer Mees:

In 2003, het jaar waarin mijn vader overleed, heb ik niet zozeer een contemplatief als wel een vegetatief bestaan geleid. Een jaar eerder was ik mijn baan in New York kwijtgeraakt, toen mijn geliefde en ten slotte ook nog mijn huis. Mijn annus horribilis. Er kwam niets meer uit mijn handen, het enige wat ik deed was huilen. Het kostte me best veel tijd om mijn leven daarna weer op te bouwen. Op een dag schreef ik het verhaal dat een doorbraak voor mij zou betekenen (’Vrouwen zouden nu eindelijk écht eens aan het werk moeten gaan’, gepubliceerd op de opiniepagina van NRC Handelsblad, 2006, AV) en vanaf dat moment is alles beter gegaan. Dat ik nu van die gemene stukken kan schrijven, heb ik aan die periode te danken. Het is geen boosheid, geen wraak – ik strijd niet voor de vrouwenzaak omdat mijn geliefde bij me weg is gegaan – maar het is wel zo dat het helpt als je bepaalde dingen ook werkelijk hebt gevoeld, doorleefd. Ik wist het toen ik mijn verhaal schreef: dit zal mijn leven veranderen. Ieder woord viel op zijn plaats. Ik wás al geëngageerd, ik wás al gedreven. Ik had alleen nog een cause nodig...

Laatst was ik met een vriendin naar Brussel. Ze heeft twee leuke kinderen, een Porsche, een mooi huis, een goede baan, een werkende man, een stralende lach, lange blonde haren en alle vrijheid van de wereld. Ik weet niet precies waar ik jaloers op ben, misschien is het zelfs geen jaloezie, maar ik probeer me wel eens voor te stellen hoe mijn leven was verlopen als mijn geliefde me niet had verlaten… Soms denk ik: hoe kan hij nou niet meer van mij houden? In die vraag ligt het antwoord eigenlijk al besloten: natuurlijk houdt hij nog van mij...

En wat mijn kinderwens betreft: ik ben er nog niet uit. Er is een grondsteward bij Delta, een mooie zwarte jongen, die mij steeds belt. Misschien moet ik de volgende keer toch maar eens vragen of hij langs komt. Kuis blijven is de slechtste manier om een kind te krijgen...

Afgaande op haar eigen woorden zien we iemand met een geleende identiteit. Wat zien we nog meer? Eerst dit: ik ben meer dan een kwart eeuw radio-journalist geweest, iemand die getraind is in het luisteren naar de stemmen van mensen. Niet alleen naar wat die stemmen vertellen, maar ook wat die stem uitstraalt, de klankkleur, de toonhoogte, de dictie, het ritme. Toen ik de eerste keer de stem van Heleen Mees hoorde schrok ik. Ik hoorde een gekloonde stem, de stem van iemand anders, van Neelie Kroes, de eerder in opspraak gekomen Europees commissaris voor mededinging. Een vrouw tegen wie Mees opkijkt: ‘Vergeleken met powervrouwen als Neelie Kroes en Hillary Clinton loop ik maar een beetje te lummelen.’ Exact dezelfde stem, griezelig. Tegenover Trouw zei Heleen Mees over haar middelbare schooltijd: ‘Ik was erg in mezelf gekeerd. Toen ik een jaar of vijftien was, zei een jongen tegen mij dat ik een weirdo was. Ik wist niet precies wat het woord betekende, maar ik had toch het idee dat hij gelijk had.’ Het gekke bij mensen als Mees is dat ze ongewild zo eerlijk zijn, voortdurend willen ze ons iets over zichzelf vertellen, over hun verloren liefde, over hun meest intieme verlangens, over hun grootste angsten. Ze zijn de hele tijd met zichzelf bezig, met hun plaats in een ontzielde maatschappij, met de pikorde. Ze schreeuwen het als het ware uit. Ze zijn permanent in verwarring en hebben daarom ‘alleen nog een cause nodig.’ Een ‘cause’ die hun identiteit wordt en die dus koste wat kost erdoor gedrukt moet worden en waaraan alles en iedereen onderworpen wordt. Het is voor hen een kwestie van leven of dood, identiteit of geen identiteit.

Het opmerkelijke van mensen met een geleende identiteit is dat ze vaak een magnetische aantrekkingskracht uitoefenen op andere onzekere mensen. Het kenmerkende van mensen met een geleende identiteit is dat ze zichzelf altijd zien door de ogen van de ander. Ze voelen zich permanent genoodzaakt zichzelf te verkopen en zenden voortdurende signalen uit.

Oke, AdR, kijk nu nog eens goed naar de foto’s hierboven. Wat zien we? Allereerst zien we een 40-jarige vrouw die als huppelende tiener in haar mooiste jurk voor een fotograaf van een glossy magazine springt om op die manier dynamisch, jong, sprankelend en begeerlijk eruit te kunnen zien. In datzelfde glossy magazine staat de foto afgedrukt waarop ze in bed in een kort jurkje haar eigen artikel in handen houdt waarin ze vrouwen aanmaant fulltime te gaan werken. Maar let op, ook hier worden talloze signalen uitgezonden. Het gaat op deze foto niet om het overtuigen van vrouwen, want als je goed kijkt dan ziet je rechts van haar een boekje met een rode kaft, getiteld: Vochtige Streken, een boekje geschreven door het Duitse tv-sterretje Charlotte Roche dat enige stof heeft doen opwaaien, en dat als volgt is omschreven:

Charlotte Roche: Anale seks, zelfbevrediging en hygiëne

Vochtige streken: seksleven, met aambeien seksuele sensatie, eigen lichaamssappen als odeurtje: toppunt van opwinding

De hoofdfiguur is Helen Memel, een meisje van achttien,dat ondanks haar leeftijd nauwelijks schaamte kent. Tijdens het wegscheren van schaamharen gaat er iets mis en belandt Helen in het ziekenhuis. Daar vertelt ze uitgebereid over haar seksleven en aambeien,[die woekeren als bloemkolen, maar bezorgen haar toch een geweldige seksuele sensatie. Alles wat Helen doet en zegt heeft totaal niets met de maatschappelijke visie van "vrouwelijk" te maken. Haar ongewassen lijf,met achter het oor en op haar pols een geurtje van eigen lichaamssappen is voor Helen het toppunt van opwinding.

De meningen over Charlotte Roche en Vochtige streken. Porno of feministisch

Is Vochtige streken pornografisch of een feministisch manifest? Is het een literaire prul of een slim in elkaar gezet commercieel boek? In Duitsland kan men het antwoord nog steeds niet geven, maar het is in ieder geval duidelijk, dat de Duitse jongeren er van genieten. Voor Duitse meisjes werkt de onomwonden manier van schrijven bevrijdend. De hoofdperoon Helen roept vrouwen op om ontspannender met het lijf om te gaan, want dat levert betere seks op. De Duitse jongens grinniken. De meningen van de feministen zijn verdeeld. Het ene deel vindt Roche gewoon een slimme pornografe, voor het andere deel is Charlotte Roche een zelfbewuste feministe.
Het boek zelf heeft eigenlijk geen enkele literaire waarde. De mening van Charlotte Roche zelf: "Vochtige streken is fictie met autobiografische trekken. Helen durft veel meer dan ik. Zelf zou ik mijn boek nooit kopen en ik wil niet, dat mijn dochter of mijn ouders het ooit lezen.

Het verlies heeft ze nog steeds niet verwerkt en ondertussen fantaseert ze over ‘een mooie zwarte jongen’ die haar als het ware op bestelling zou kunnen bevruchten en wiens enige noemenswaardige kwaliteit kennelijk is dat hij 'mooi' is en een 'zwarte' huid heeft, kortom slechts een lichaam is met een geslachtsdeel als belangrijkste kenmerk. Een 'zwart' lichaam dat ze eens in het voorbijgaan haar telefoonnummer heeft gegeven. Geestelijke kenmerken zijn kennelijk niet vermeldenswaardig, zolang hij maar 'mooi' en 'zwart' is. Terwijl ze de mannen laat weten: 'het liefst zou ik toch trouwen en kinderen krijgen' houdt ze als power feministe de vrouwen voor dat ze zich 'niet kan voorstellen dat je intellectueel bevredigd wordt door voor kinderen te zorgen.' Daar ligt ze dan tegelijkertijd begeerlijk te zijn voor de mannen en feministische rolmodel te zijn voor de blanke middenklasse vrouwen. En op televisie kleedt ze zich opnieuw in haar zondagse jurk met haar borsten op een presenteerblaadje: kijk mij eens modern en begeerlijk zijn, een hedendaagse reactionaire vrouw in een moderne verpakking.
