What Are Afghan Lives Worth?

Mourning Michael Jackson, ignoring the Afghan dead. It was a blast. I'm talking about my daughter's wedding. You don't often see a child of yours quite that happy. I'm no party animal, but I danced my 64-year-old legs off. And I can't claim that, as I walked my daughter to the ceremony, or ate, or talked with friends, or simply sat back and watched the young and energetic enjoy themselves, I thought about those Afghan wedding celebrations where the "blast" isn't metaphorical, where the bride, the groom, the partygoers in the midst of revelry die. In the two weeks since, however, that's been on my mind - or rather the lack of interest our world shows in dead civilians from a distant imperial war - and all because of a passage I stumbled upon in a striking article by journalist Anand Gopal. In "Uprooting an Afghan Village" in the June issue of the Progressive magazine, he writes about Garloch, an Afghan village he visited in the eastern province of Laghman. After destructive American raids, Gopal tells us, many of its desperate inhabitants simply packed up and left for exile in Afghan or Pakistani refugee camps. One early dawn in August 2008, writes Gopal, American helicopters first descended on Garloch for a six-hour raid: "The Americans claim there were gunshots as they left. The villagers deny it. Regardless, American bombers swooped by the village just after the soldiers left and dropped a payload on one house. It belonged to Haiji Qadir, a pole-thin, wizened old man who was hosting more than forty relatives for a wedding party. The bomb split the house in two, killing sixteen, including twelve from Qadir's family, and wounding scores more... The malek [chief] went to the province's governor and delivered a stern warning: protect our villagers or we will turn against the Americans." That passage caught my eye because, to the best of my knowledge, I'm the only person in the U.S. who has tried to keep track of the wedding parties wiped out, in whole or part, by American military action since the Bush administration invaded Afghanistan in November 2001. With Gopal's report from Garloch, that number, by my count, has reached five (only three of which are well documented in print). The first occurred in December of that invasion year when a B-52 and two B-1B bombers, wielding precision-guided weapons, managed, according to reports, to wipe out 110 out of 112 revelers in another small Afghan village. At least one Iraqi wedding party near the Syrian border was also eviscerated - by U.S. planes back in 2004. Soon after that slaughter, responding to media inquiries, an American general asked: "How many people go to the middle of the desert... to hold a wedding 80 miles from the nearest civilization?" Later, in what passed for an acknowledgment of the incident, another American general said: "Could there have been a celebration of some type going on?... Certainly. Bad guys have celebrations." Case closed. Perhaps over the course of an almost eight-year war in Afghanistan, the toll in wedding parties may seem modest: not even one a year! But before we settle for that figure, evidently so low it's not worth a headline in this country, let's keep in mind that there's no reason to believe: I've seen every article in English that, in passing, happens to mention an Afghan wedding slaughter - the one Gopal notes, for instance, seems to have gotten no other coverage; or that other wedding slaughters haven't been recorded in languages I can't read; or that, in the rural Pashtun backlands, some U.S. attacks on wedding celebrants might not have made it into news reports anywhere. In fact, no one knows how many weddings - rare celebratory moments in an Afghan world that, for three decades, has had little to celebrate - have been taken out by U.S. planes or raids, or a combination of the two.

Last week the US "stood down" in Iraq, finalizing the pullout of 140,000 troops from Iraqi cities and towns - the first step on the long path home. After more than six years, most Americans are war-weary, even though a smaller percentage of us have been involved in the actual fighting than in any major conflict in US history.

But not so fast. The conflict that began in 2003 is far from over for us, and the next chapter - confronting a Taliban that reasserted itself in Afghanistan while the U.S. was sidetracked in Iraq - will be expensive and bloody. The death toll for U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan reached 5,000 in June. An additional 80,000 Americans have been wounded or injured since the war in Iraq began. More than 300,000 of our troops have required medical treatment, and Army statistics show that more than 17 percent of our returning soldiers suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Meanwhile, in Iraq, even though most of the population has long told pollsters they can't wait for U.S. forces to leave, U.S. officials have said we are likely to station 50,000 troops at military bases in the country for the foreseeable future. This is because the situation in Iraq is highly precarious.

Moreover, the U.S. barely has begun to face the enormous financial bill for the war. By our accounting, the U.S. has already spent $1 trillion on operations and related defense spending, with more to come - and it will cost perhaps $2 trillion more to repay the war debt, replenish military equipment and provide care and treatment for U.S. veterans back home. Many of the wounded will require indefinite care for brain and spinal injuries. Disability payments are ramping up and will grow higher for decades. The stress of extended, multiple tours to Iraq means that a whole generation of U.S. military men and women may now be suffering from long-term mental health issues. The suicide rate in the Army is at its highest level since record-keeping began.

This wartime spending undoubtedly has been a major contributor to our present economic collapse. The U.S. has waged an expensive war as if it required little or no economic sacrifice, funding the conflict by massive borrowing. As we've observed in the past, you can't spend $3 trillion on a reckless foreign war and not feel the pain at home.

Burned by the difficulties in Iraq, our political leaders have no illusions about the length and difficulty of the challenge facing us in Afghanistan. But in other respects we seem set to repeat the same mistakes that we made in Iraq. The president has just signed yet another "emergency" supplemental appropriations measure ($80 billion) to fund continuing operations in Iraq and expansion into Afghanistan. This means that for the 30th time since 2001, war spending has been rushed through the budget process without serious scrutiny.

Obstacles continue to beset returning veterans too. Despite an increase in the Department of Veterans Affairs budget, the backlog of disability claims has reached its highest level.

Early this year, President Barack Obama committed 20,000 troops to a "surge" in Afghanistan. That, combined with a large, ongoing presence in Iraq and continued reliance on private contractors for virtually every aspect of military support, remains a recipe for staggering out-of-control expenditures. Surely we can draw some lessons from the Iraq debacle and set aside money to care for our veterans, crack down on fraud and profiteering, and account for the true costs of the war in the budget so the American taxpayer can see what we are paying for.

Ramallah/Jeruzalem, 7 juli. De Israëlische nederzettingenpolitiek op de bezette Westelijke Jordaanoever draagt bij tot de wurging van de Palestijnse economie en versterkt daardoor de Palestijnse afhankelijkheid van buitenlandse hulp.

„De Europese belastingbetalers zullen uiteindelijk het grootste deel van de kosten van deze afhankelijkheid betalen”, zo heeft de Europese Commissie gisteren in een ongebruikelijk harde verklaring laten weten.

De Europese kritiek kwam te midden van Israëlisch-Amerikaanse onderhandelingen over de Israëlische bouw in bezet gebied, waar, inclusief Oost-Jeruzalem, nu 500.000 kolonisten leven. Washington eist sinds president Obama in januari aantrad stopzetting van alle bouwactiviteit om het vastgelopen vredesproces met de Palestijnen weer op gang te brengen.

De Israëlische premier Netanyahu zegt dat het noodzakelijk is te blijven bouwen voor „natuurlijke groei”. Jeruzalem heeft gesuggereerd te kunnen instemmen met een bevriezing voor drie maanden, mits van Palestijnse en Arabische zijde ook concessies komen. Volgens de Israëlische televisie heeft minister van Defensie Barak in zijn onderhandelingen met de Amerikaanse gezant voor het Midden-Oosten Mitchell voorts toegezegd 23 van de 100 ‘buitenposten’ te ontmantelen. Israël beschouwt de ‘buitenposten’ in tegenstelling tot de nederzettingen als illegaal.

In haar verklaring onderstreepte de Europese Commissie dat zij alle Israëlische nederzettingen in bezet gebied als illegaal beschouwt. De bouwactiviteit „ondermijnt de vooruitgang naar een tweestatenoplossing”

En inderdaad, mensen verraden zichzelf vaak door impliciete aannames. Hoe goed ze zich ook proberen te verschuilen achter woorden, maar al te vaak vallen ze door de mand.

Deze zin van Sander van Hoorn: 'een familie die ik ken, aanhangers van de Palestijnse president, dus niet van Hamas, en in alles eigenlijk normale mensen' Sander, wat bedoel je precies met het woord: 'eigenlijk'? Doorgaans wordt het woord eigenlijk gebruikt in de zin van: normaal is het niet zo, maar bij nadere beschouwing blijkt dat ze toch 'in alles eigenlijk normale mensen' zijn. Mijn vraag aan jou: waarom zijn Palestijnen -- nota bene 'aanhangers van de Palestijnse president' die door het Westen gebruikt wordt in de strijd tegen Hamas -- in jouw bewustzijn doorgaans niet normaal? In elk geval: niet zo normaal dat je je genoodzaakt voelde om er het woord 'eigenlijk' bij te zetten? En dan Sander: impliciet laat je ons weten dat de aanhangers 'van Hamas' niet normaal zijn, want met nadruk schrijf je 'aanhangers van de Palestijnse president, dus niet van Hamas'. PA uses foreign aid to scuttle human rights, civil liberties

On 11 June, members of the Palestinian security agencies detained Haitham Amr, a resident of the small village of Beit al-Rush, 25 kilometers south west of Hebron .

Two days later, Amr, 32 and father of three small children, was found dead in his cell at the Mukhabarat (General Intelligence) headquarters in downtown Hebron .

Amr apparently died after he was subjected to an unusually harsh session of torture resulting in a massive internal bleeding.

At first, PA security officials claimed that Amr had jumped from the second floor of the building in an attempt to escape. However, the claim seemed to have been totally concocted and contained no iota of truth.

The PA did carry out an autopsy on Amr’s body at al-Quds University Medical College immediately after his death. However, the forensic report has not been made public, despite the passage of nearly one month after the incident.

Amr is not an isolated case. Since the establishment of the American-backed regime in Ramallah, under the supervision of the American security commissioner, Gen. Keith Dayton, as many as eight Palestinians were either unlawfully killed or tortured to death at the hands of PA security personnel.

Today, hundreds of mostly political activists are languishing in PA detention centers, the majority of whom without charge or trial. And when trials do take place, they are usually conducted in clear violation of internationally accepted procedure.

The PA routinely claims it doesn’t hold “political prisoners” in its jails and detention centers. However, it is amply clear that this claim is false.

This writer has spoken with dozens of released detainees who testified that they were harshly tortured.

In addition, the former prisoners, many of whom have been re-arrested either by Israel or the PA for no legitimate reasons, said they were asked which political party they had voted for in the 2006 elections, what their political preferences were, and what they thought of Hamas.

It is widely believed that as many as 4000 political activists have been arrested ever since the ousting by Hamas of Fatah from the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2007. Now, there are as many as 750 political detainees in PA custody. Some observers have called the wanton campaign against the Islamic opposition a real inquisition.

In addition to arresting and torturing people suspected of sympathizing with Hamas, the PA security agencies have seized hundreds of educational, health, sport, and charitable institutions previously run by Islamic organizations.

Moreover, hundreds of civil servants, including teachers, have been unceremoniously fired from their jobs. Others, who have not been fired, have been receiving only partial salaries as a reprisal for their alleged sympathy with Hamas. In many cases, the charges are based on secret reports filed by local informers.

Human rights activists have pointed out that many of these informers often abuse their “function” by filing false charges against a given civil servant for reasons having to do with personal vendetta or clan feuds.

In the meantime, the Palestinian Justice system has been more or less in a state of paralysis thanks to the hegemony of the security agencies which often warn judges and lawyers against interfering in “security matters.”

Furthermore, freedom of speech, including press freedom, has also been suffering immensely as a result of heavy and occasionally draconian interference by the security agencies. Journalists have been arrested, tortured and humiliated for reporting news and views the PA wants to remain hidden from the eyes of the public.

Some of the incarcerated journalists and writers still languishing in PA jails include Mustafa Sabri, Fareed Hamad, Qays Abu Samra and Serri Sammour. The latter was arrested from his home after publishing an internet article on Fatah.

A few months ago, this writer was detained in a slimy cell in Hebron for 60 hours for saying during a TV interview that the PA was subservient to Israel .

The PA, an artificial entity without any semblance of sovereignty, is nearly totally dependent on politically-motivated foreign aid for its very survival.

The western rationale for keeping the PA afloat, at least financially, is ostensibly to prepare for the creation of a Palestinian state.

However, it is obvious that the West is actually helping create a police state, and in the Palestinian case, a police state without a state, an entity that very much looks like a graveyard for human rights, civil liberties and simple human decency.

Last month, President Obama vowed in his speech in Cairo to open a new chapter in U.S. relations with Muslims around the world, based on mutual respect.

However, one month later, Muslims all over the world are still watching U.S. continuing to help local dictatorships savage their masses by denying them basic freedoms and human rights. This is happening in occupied Palestine as well as many other parts of the Middle East.

Needless to say, a healthy relationship between Muslims and the West ought to be based on honesty, not on hypocrisy and moral duplicity.

This week, European states decided to summon their ambassadors from Tehran to protest the Iranian authorities’ crackdown on western-backed protesters.

Western powers, which have supported and embraced every dictator and tyrant in the Muslim world, from the Shah of Iran to Suharto of Indonesia, are suddenly invoking the mantra of civil liberties and human rights to justify their hostile posture against Iran, a country that is seemingly determined to be free and independent from western and Zionist subservience.

However, when it comes to Israeli crimes in Gaza, or the systematic persecution and savaging of non-conformist Palestinian activists, we see that the West is not only silent, but is actively standing on the side of tyrannical Arab governments and the Nazi-like Israeli occupiers.

Needless to say, the persistence of the erstwhile American policy of backing dictators and embracing the colonialist Israeli occupation will only vindicate the views of many Muslims and non-Muslims alike who argue that the US is not really sincere about having a dignified rapprochement with the Muslims world.

In the final analysis, people in this part of the world want to see real actions not just hear eloquent words lacking in substance.

As a Palestinian, I would like to see the Obama administration (and also the EU states) tie their financing of the PA to the latter’s respect for human rights and civil liberties.

Will the Obama administration and EU have the moral integrity to behave this way? (end)

'Ik schrijf in mijn reactie op Marco dat ik de eerste keren dat een Free Gaza schip werd TEGENgehouden, daar ook aandacht aan heb besteed. Na verloop van tijd moet daar in de regel (tijd, ruimte) een element aan toegevoegd worden. Soms maak ik ook reportages die een trend signaleren, maar in de regel passen die beter in de programma’s buiten het Radio 1 Journaal en Het Journaal (vinden De Omroepen die bepaalden dat de NOS er is voor nieuw nieuws).

Dat betekent dus voor dat schip nogal wat. Dat er een Nobelprijswinnaar op zat en een voormalig congreslid? Bekijk de passagierslijsten eens van de vorige schepen. Overigens heb ik over de uitzetting van die twee vandaag (man bijt hond) op de radio verteld, ver voor je je reactie verstuurde.

Hoe nu Sander? Twee vragen:

1. Denk je niet dat er luisteraars zijn die zich afvragen waarom ze niet meteen te horen kregen dat 'die twee' , een Nobelprijswinnares voor de Vrede en een voormalig Amerikaans Congreslid, ontvoerd waren door Israel? Waarom meldt het NOS-Journaal wel dat 'die twee' uitgezet zijn en vond het NOS-Journaal het niet nodig om meteen te melden dat ze ontvoerd waren? Denk jij dat de luisteraars van het NOS-Journaal zo onnozel zijn dat ze geen vragen stellen?

2. Waarom wordt een en ander niet door het NOS-Journaal op tv gemeld? Is een uitzetting van een voormalig Congreslid en een Nobelprijswinnares niet belangrijk genoeg voor de tv maar wel voor de radio?

Laat ons weten wat de motieven zijn van degenen die beslissen? Overigens, als ik over de pro-Israel lobby schrijf dan heb ik het over de pro-Israel lobby, en dus niet over de joodse lobby, zoals jij suggereert. De pro-Israel lobby in het Westen bestaat vooral uit fundamentalistische christenen en uit burgers die zich schuldig voelen voor het feit dat hun christelijke cultuur de nazi-holocaust heeft veroorzaakt. Vaak gedragen ze zich als de pro-Israel lobby zonder zich daarvan daadwerkelijk bewust te zijn. Dat geldt ook voor de redactie van het NOS-Journaal en zelfs in sommige gevallen gedraag ook jij je als een pro-Israel lobbyist. Met andere woorden: probeer zakelijk in te gaan op argumenten Sander.

Je schrijft: 'een trend'. Wat nu Sander, sinds wanneer is in een gewapend conflict, waarbij honderden Palestijnse burgers worden vermoord, onder wie vooral ook vrouwen en kinderen, sprake van trends? Ik dacht dat dit vooral een modeterm was. Journalistiek die alleen reageert op trends is een product dat aan de man moet worden gebracht. Denk je dat John Pilger of Robert Fisk of Seymour Hersh aan trends doen?

Combat is the best, my brother, as the famous bumper sticker reads. It's a good thing we have Shayetet 13. Operating at the crack of dawn - or was it before nightfall? - the daring naval commandos fearlessly took control of a rusty, rickety, unarmed boat bobbing in the middle of the sea. That's exactly why we have a naval commando force - to take control of ships offering humanitarian aid. Behold, the guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. The military correspondents reported on the incident with an amazement that only they can muster. But even they could not provide a fig leaf for the operation: The Israel Defense Forces has once again used its power to overcome the weak; the navy has once again acted like pirates. The Arion was abducted in the framework of protecting Israel's security for all eternity, blah, blah, blah.

Soldiers, journalists and news consumers automatically refrain from asking questions. The navy captured another ship carrying symbolic aid, as if its passengers were Somali pirates. These were people of conscience from various countries carrying toys and medicine.

This was not the navy's first daring operation of this kind, nor will it be the last. When there are no hostile aid ships on the horizon, the navy takes control of wretched Gazan boats, using water hoses or firing at its passengers - poor fishermen who only want to make a living at sea. This is the main activity unfolding off Gaza's shores. A navy outfitted with the best arsenal in the world is hunting surfboards. One of the best-armed forces in the world is chasing children, examining old people's documents and entering bedrooms to make arrests.

We ought to pay close attention to what preoccupies our military. While defense officials hold discussions on buying the F-35 combat jet at $200 million per plane, the IDF is mostly busy with miserable, pointless police work that befits an occupation army. It is engaged in ludicrous and useless policing in a "war" against people equipped with some of the most primitive weapons in the world.

In the dead of night, soldiers in elite and not-so-elite units break into the homes of Palestinians, some of whom are guilty of no crime, and needlessly awaken and frighten women and children. Their comrades spend their service standing at checkpoints, occasionally shooting and killing needlessly. Other soldiers chase after children throwing stones or Molotov cocktails and shoot at them. "A huge terrorist attack" that was thwarted near the security fence in Gaza a month ago was to be carried out by "a force" that numbered eight Palestinians, some of them mounted on mules. The mule-rider's brigade - these are the forces against us.

We saw it, of course, during Operation Cast Lead, the war that provoked almost no opposition. As reported last week by the U.S.-based Human Rights Watch, our drones bombed helpless Gaza residents, killing a few dozen, including children. Our jets and helicopters, among the most sophisticated in the world, are bombing residential neighborhoods. They may be preparing for an operation that fires the imagination in Iran, but meanwhile they are circling the Gaza sky as if it belonged to them.

If that were not enough, we now have the most advanced system of all: female soldiers who are lookouts trained to shoot live fire after completing "precedent-setting training." The army newspaper Bamahane reported it with great enthusiasm: "This is the first time female soldiers will shoot automatic gunfire from within a W.R., noted the C.O. of the T.B," whatever those initials mean. In simpler language, it means that 19-year-old girls are playing with joysticks in an air-conditioned room and "taking down" people.

This then is the great progress of the "people's army" to train women to kill, while their comrades, soldiers and Border Police, are routinely sent to shoot live fire at unarmed demonstrators at Bil'in and Na'alin. This, for the most part, is the IDF's balance sheet. This is what largely preoccupies the best, most moral army in the world. Pilots who have never fought in an air battle and soldiers with no army against them now spend most of their time maintaining the occupation in a kind of pathetic combat, and they are our protective shield. When the day of reckoning comes, we will remember this.

Welnu Stan, je zegt dus dat je hebt zien staan en dat het vervolgens weg was.

Probleem van ons blogsysteem is dat ik zelf modereer, dus fysiek op 'OK' moet klikken. Als ik daar dus niet binnen de seconde aan toekom (in dit geval was het 4 uur later) is dat dus wat anders dan 'niet weten hoe snel ik het er van af moet halen'. Tot die tijd is je reactie nooit geplaatst geweest. Dit staat uitgelegd in de rechterkolom op de site.

Rectificeer je die laatste paragraaf nu je de feiten kent?

Ik reageer normaal gesproken niet op de reacties op de blogs van anderen. Maar nu:

Ik rectificeer dat niet. Afgelopen week nog nam ik in Gaza een gesprek op met een man. Toen ik daarna voor de radio de vertalingen insprak, zag ik in mijn ooghoed mijn Palestijnse cameraman de man en zijn kinderen hand in hand de trap op dirigeren. De kinderen hadden tot dan toe ver van ons vandaan zitten spelen.

Mijn cameraman weet inmiddels dat ik die beelden toch niet gebruik. Het zijn de snijshots zoals zij ze op televisie gebruiken, maar ik hou niet zo van ensceneren.

Ik heb het veel erger meegemaakt. De official die voor het interview een batterij vlaggen de kamer indraagt en weigert in zijn ‘natuurlijke omgeving’ bevraagd te worden. De familie in Rafah die herenigt wordt en de cameraman die ze tot drie keer toe vraagt de eerste ontmoeting over te doen. (Met deze cameraman werk ik niet meer). Sorry, ik werk hier al een paar jaar en ik snap niet dat je eerste reactie op een boodschap die je niet leuk vindt, is om de boodschapper te wantrouwen. Zie http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitieve_dissonantie. Overigens zie je hetzelfde bij mensen die me verwijten pro-Palestijns te zijn.

Maar misschien dat die ene zin die je aanhaalt, inderdaad ongelukkig geformuleerd was. Boven alles was het namelijk een blijk van vertrouwen in mijn cameraploeg in Gaza. Het was bovendien een poging om de critici aan de andere kant vóór te zijn. Die denken namelijk dat de cameraploeg eigenlijk van Hamas is en dat ik 24 uur per dag een minder om me heen, terwijl ik er in Gaza nog nooit een heb gezien).

de logische verklaring is dit: het was zoals ik schreef een p.s., een post scriptum, latijn voor 'naschrift'. dus dat naschrift is, zoals ik aangaf, toegevoegd nadat ik het bericht al had geplaatst op het moment dat ik ontdekte dat het bericht op jouw site was verdwenen. toen ik even later ontdekte dat mijn reactie er weer opstond, check en dubbelcheck, heb ik het post scriptum weer verwijderd.

Israel calls on Jewish fanatics to “save” Galilee from its own Arab citizens
Mayors want to stop “Arab takeover”

Israel’s housing minister has called for strict segregation between the country’s Jewish and Arab populations last week as he unveiled plans to move large numbers of fundamentalist religious Jews to Israel’s north to prevent what he described as an “Arab takeover” of the region.

Ariel Atias said he considered it a “national mission” to bring ultra-Orthodox Jews – or Haredim, distinctive for their formal black and white clothing – into Arab areas, and announced that he would also create the north’s first exclusively Haredi town.

The new settlement drive, according to Mr Atias, is intended to revive previous failed efforts by the state to “Judaise”, or create a Jewish majority in, the country’s heavily Arab north.

Analysts say the announcement is a disturbing indication that the Haredim, who have traditionally been hostile to Zionism because of their strict reading of the Bible, are rapidly being recruited to the Judaisation project in both Israel and the occupied territories.

Mr Atias, of the ultra-Orthodox party Shas, is drawing on a model already successfully developed over the past decade in the West Bank, where the Haredim, the group with the highest birth rate in Israel, have been encouraged to move into separate settlements that have rapidly eaten into large chunks of Palestinian territory.

Several mayors of northern cities in Israel have appealed to Mr Atias to help them “save” the Jewishness of their communities in a similar manner by recruiting Haredim to swell the numbers of Jews in the north.

Mr Atias revealed his new drive on Thursday as he spoke at an Israeli Bar Association conference in Tel Aviv to discuss land reform plans. He told the delegates: “We can all be bleeding hearts, but I think it is unsuitable [for Jews and Arabs] to live together.”

His priority, he said, was to prevent the “spread” of Arab citizens, who comprise one-fifth of the country’s population and are mostly restricted to their own overcrowded communities in two northern regions, the Galilee and Wadi Ara.

Referring to the Galilee, where Arab citizens are a small majority of the population, he said: “If we go on like we have until now, we will lose the Galilee. Populations that should not mix are spreading there.”

Mr Atias also revealed that mayors of several northern cities where Arab citizens had started to move into Jewish neighbourhoods had asked him how they could “salvage” their cities.

One, Shimon Lankry, the mayor of Acre, where there were intercommunal clashes last year, met with the minister only last week. “He told me: ‘Bring a bunch of Haredim and we’ll save the city’,” Mr Atias said.

“He told me that Arabs are living in Jewish buildings and running them [Jews] out.”

The Haredim have a birth rate – estimated at eight children per woman – that is twice that of the Muslim population and are increasingly seen as a useful demographic weapon to stop the erosion of Israel’s Jewish majority.

Mr Atias’s comments brought swift condemnation from Israel’s Arab lawmakers. Mohammad Barakeh, the head of the Communist Party, told the popular Israeli website Ynet: “Racism is spreading throughout the government and minister Atias is the latest to express it.”

The key initiative proposed by Mr Atias is the development of a large Haredi town of 20,000 homes based on an existing small community at Harish in the Wadi Ara, a region close to the West Bank.

Harish was established in the early 1990s by the housing minister of the time, Ariel Sharon, as part of a huge settlement drive inside both Israel and the occupied territories.

Harish and a dozen communities known as “star points” were built on the Green Line – the pre-1967 border between Israel and the West Bank – as a way to erode its political significance.

Most of the communities, however, were located in densely populated Arab areas and failed to attract Israelis.

Until recently the settler population had spurned settling in Israel and has been drawn instead either to Palestinian areas close to Jerusalem or to frontier communities deep in the West Bank.

Cesar Yehudkin of Bimkom, a group of Israeli town planners critical of government planning policy, said the goal of Harish was to occupy a large swathe of land in Wadi Ara to prevent the “natural growth” of Arab localities. “Harish is an attractive option for rapid development because the infrastructure for a large town is already in place,” he said.

Mr Atias told Israel’s Bar Association that Harish was a vital way to stop “illegal Arab expansion” and that the Haredim “are the only ones willing to live there”.

The Israeli media revealed two weeks ago similar plans by Shimon Gapso, the mayor of Upper Nazareth, a Jewish town established 50 years ago in the Galilee region to restrict the growth of the neighbouring Arab city of Nazareth.

Israel deports five Free Gaza activists

Gaza - Ma'an - Five Bahraini citizens participating in the Free Gaza
Movement's voyage to Gaza were deported on Friday, following their Tuesday
afternoon seizure by Israeli forces in international waters off the Gaza
coast.

Coordinator of the Palestinian International Campaign to Lift the Siege
Amjad Ash-Shawa confirmed that one of the Bahraini nationals is a reporter
for the Al-Jazeera network. All five are expected to be escorted to Ben
Gurion International Airport where other Al-Jazeera journalists will be
awaiting their arrival.

Two Palestinian activists and organizers with the Free Gaza Movement were
released Thursday, and reported being held in unsanitary warehouse quarters
and were questioned by Israeli intelligence.

A report from the New York Times said the Bahrainis were kept in a separate
facility from other imprisoned solidarity activists like former US
Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and Irish peace activist and Nobel laureate,
Mairead Corrigan Maguire.

Ireland demands release of nationals

Ireland's Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin called for the swift
release of two Irish nationals detained from the ship including the Nobel
Peace Prize winner and a second man identified as Derek Graham.

In a statement received by the Free Gaza Movement, Martin said his
department has been closely following the situation and was in ongoing
contact with Israeli authorities.

"My immediate priority is ensuring the safety and welfare of Ms Maguire and
Mr Graham and securing their release as soon as possible," the minister
said.

"I have been assured by the Israeli authorities that they are both well and
are being properly treated. An officer from the Irish Embassy in Tel Aviv
visited yesterday with Ms Maguire and Mr Graham to provide assistance and
will endeavor to make a further consular visit today."

"I would again renew my call for the release of Ms Maguire and Mr Graham as
well as the other nineteen passengers detained on The Spirit of Humanity,"
he added.

"I would also call upon the Israeli Government to ensure that the
humanitarian supplies for the people of Gaza being transported on The Spirit
of Humanity are made available as soon as possible to the Palestinian
authorities for distribution."

The minister called the current Israeli blockade of Gaza "completely
unacceptable" and called for all border crossings into the coastal salient
to be opened to humanitarian and commercial traffic.

The Free Gaza Movement's ship, the Spirit of Humanity, was overtaken by
eight Israeli naval warships in international waters on 30 June. All 22 crew
members aboard the vessel were detained and most will be deported, Israeli
authorities said. The Israeli navy threatened to fire on the boat, which
identified itself as a civilian ship bringing supplies to the Gaza Strip,
and noted they had been cleared for sail by Cyprus customs authorities.

The ship was nonetheless boarded and taken over, then brought to the Israeli
port of Ashdod where activists were taken to prison facilities.

Letter from an Israeli Jail

This is Cynthia McKinney and I’m speaking from an Israeli prison cellblock
in Ramle. [I am one of] the Free Gaza 21, human rights activists currently
imprisoned for trying to take medical supplies to Gaza, building supplies -
and even crayons for children, I had a suitcase full of crayons for
children. While we were on our way to Gaza the Israelis threatened to fire
on our boat, but we did not turn around. The Israelis high-jacked and
arrested us because we wanted to give crayons to the children in Gaza. We
have been detained, and we want the people of the world to see how we have
been treated just because we wanted to deliver humanitarian assistance to
the people of Gaza.

At the outbreak of Israel’s Operation ‘Cast Lead’ [in December 2008], I
boarded a Free Gaza boat with one day’s notice and tried, as the US
representative in a multi-national delegation, to deliver 3 tons of medical
supplies to an already besieged and ravaged Gaza.

During Operation Cast Lead, U.S.-supplied F-16’s rained hellfire on a
trapped people. Ethnic cleansing became full scale outright genocide.
U.S.-supplied white phosphorus, depleted uranium, robotic technology, DIME
weapons, and cluster bombs - new weapons creating injuries never treated
before by Jordanian and Norwegian doctors. I was later told by doctors who
were there in Gaza during Israel’s onslaught that Gaza had become Israel’s
veritable weapons testing laboratory, people used to test and improve the
kill ratio of their weapons.

The world saw Israel’s despicable violence thanks to al-Jazeera Arabic and
Press TV that broadcast in English. I saw those broadcasts live and around
the clock, not from the USA but from Lebanon, where my first attempt to get
into Gaza had ended because the Israeli military rammed the boat I was on in
international water ... It’s a miracle that I’m even here to write about my
second encounter with the Israeli military, again a humanitarian mission
aborted by the Israeli military.

The Israeli authorities have tried to get us to confess that we committed a
crime ... I am now known as Israeli prisoner number 88794. How can I be in
prison for collecting crayons to kids?

Zionism has surely run out of its last legitimacy if this is what it does to
people who believe so deeply in human rights for all that they put their own
lives on the line for someone else’s children. Israel is the fullest
expression of Zionism, but if Israel fears for its security because Gaza’s
children have crayons then not only has Israel lost its last shred of
legitimacy, but Israel must be declared a failed state.

I am facing deportation from the state that brought me here at gunpoint
after commandeering our boat. I was brought to Israel against my will. I am
being held in this prison because I had a dream that Gaza’s children could
color & paint, that Gaza’s wounded could be healed, and that Gaza’s
bombed-out houses could be rebuilt.

But I’ve learned an interesting thing by being inside this prison. First of
all, it’s incredibly black: populated mostly by Ethiopians who also had a
dream ... like my cellmates, one who is pregnant. They are all are in their
twenties. They thought they were coming to the Holy Land. They had a dream
that their lives would be better ... The once proud, never colonized
Ethiopia [has been thrown into] the back pocket of the United States, and
become a place of torture, rendition, and occupation. Ethiopians must free
their country because superpower politics [have] become more important than
human rights and self-determination.

My cellmates came to the Holy Land so they could be free from the
exigencies of superpower politics. They committed no crime except to have a
dream. They came to Israel because they thought that Israel held promise for
them. Their journey to Israel through Sudan and Egypt was arduous. I can
only imagine what it must have been like for them. And it wasn’t cheap. Many
of them represent their family’s best collective efforts for
self-fulfilment. They made their way to the United Nations High Commission
for Refugees. They got their yellow paper of identification. They got their
certificate for police protection. They are refugees from tragedy, and they
made it to Israel only after they arrived Israel told them “there is no UN
in Israel.

The police here have license to pick them up & suck them into the black hole
of a farce for a justice system. These beautiful, industrious and proud
women represent the hopes of entire families. The idea of Israel tricked
them and the rest of us. In a widely propagandized slick marketing campaign,
Israel represented itself as a place of refuge and safety for the world’s
first Jews and Christian. I too believed that marketing and failed to look
deeper.

The truth is that Israel lied to the world. Israel lied to the families of
these young women. Israel lied to the women themselves who are now trapped
in Ramle’s detention facility. And what are we to do? One of my cellmates
cried today. She has been here for 6 months. As an American, crying with
them is not enough. The policy of the United States must be better, and
while we watch President Obama give 12.8 trillion dollars to the financial
elite of the United States it ought now be clear that hope, change, and ‘yes
we can’ were powerfully presented images of dignity and self-fulfilment,
individually and nationally, that besieged people everywhere truly believed
in.

It was a slick marketing campaign as slickly put to the world and to the
voters of America as was Israel’s marketing to the world. It tricked all of
us but, more tragically, these young women.

We must cast an informed vote about better candidates seeking to represent
us. I have read and re-read Dr. Martin Luther King Junior’s letter from a
Birmingham jail. Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever imagined that
I too would one day have to do so. It is clear that taxpayers in Europe and
the U.S. have a lot to atone for, for what they’ve done to others around the
world.

What an irony! My son begins his law school program without me because I am
in prison, in my own way trying to do my best, again, for other people’s
children. Forgive me, my son. I guess I’m experiencing the harsh reality
which is why people need dreams. [But] I’m lucky. I will leave this place.
Has Israel become the place where dreams die?

Ask the people of Palestine. Ask the stream of black and Asian men whom I
see being processed at Ramle. Ask the women on my cellblock. [Ask yourself:]
what are you willing to do?

Let’s change the world together & reclaim what we all need as human beings:
Dignity. I appeal to the United Nations to get these women of Ramle, who
have done nothing wrong other than to believe in Israel as the guardian of
the Holy Land, resettled in safe homes. I appeal to the United State’s
Department of State to include the plight of detained UNHCR-certified
refugees in the Israel country report in its annual human rights report. I
appeal once again to President Obama to go to Gaza: send your special envoy,
George Mitchell there, and to engage Hamas as the elected choice of the
Palestinian people.

I dedicate this message to those who struggle to achieve a free Palestine,
and to the women I’ve met at Ramle. This is Cynthia McKinney, July 2nd 2009,

Stan,

Ik was net aan het Googlen want ik wilde net iets terug luisteren op radio 1 en zo kwam ik op de weblog van Sander van Hoorn over het bezoek van minister Koenders aan Gaza. Er reageert iemand dat er geen aandacht is geweest over de Spirit van Humanity. Hoe reageert Sander van Hoorn daarop?

Op 30 juni jongstleden is het voormalige congreslid en Nobelprijswinnaar Cynthia McKinney voor de kust van Palestina gearresteerd terwijl ze op een boot met hulpgoederen in internationaal water voer. De boot had hulpgoederen aan boord om de nood van de twee jaar durende blokkade van Gaza door Israël te verlichten.

Waarom is de aandacht van de Nederlandse media? Schending van de mensenrechten jongens, op DIT moment!!!!

Daar is aandacht voor (geweest) in de Nederlandse media.

Het nieuws werkt zo: De eerste keer dat de Free Gaza naar Gaza voer, was ik ze op een ander schip tegemoet gevaren. Daar is een radioreportage van uitgezonden. De keer erna heb ik bijvoorbeeld een gesprek opgenomen en uitgezonden met een joodse Israeli die aan boord was. Ook de eerste keren dat een schip werd tegengehouden, hebben we dat gemeld.

Na verloop van tijd is zoiets dan vanuit Nederlands perspectief geen nieuws meer. (Dat er in Gaza, Israel en in de blogosfeer over bericht wordt is iets anders). Het wordt weer anders als er iets bijzonders gebeurt: het schip wordt tot zinken gebracht; er is een Nederlander aan boord. Dat soort dingen.

Je verontwaardiging is begrijpelijk. Dezelfde kritiek kreeg ik van mensen toen de NOS niet elke raket meer meldde die op Sderot neerkwam. Ook dat was ‘gewoon’ geworden.

Het blijft een moeilijke mix tussen wat ‘afwijkt van het gangbare’ en natuurlijk ook de (beperkte) hoeveelheid zendtijd die je hebt.

En dus berichtten we niet over dit schip maar bijvoorbeeld wel over een rapport van Amnesty over de oorlog in Gaza.

Sorry, een hele radioreportage zeg je? Tsjonge. Voor een vrouw die presidentskandidaat van de VS is geweest?

Nee, dan het lawaai dat losbarstte toen een paar Britse soldaten zich op duizenden kilometers van hun thuisbasis in Iraanse (of betwist Iraanse) water begaven. Zullen we even tellen hoeveel pagina’s daarmee op de NOS-site vol zijn geschreven, hoeveel uur zendtijd op radio en TV daaraan zijn gewijd?

Stel je even voor dat Somalische piraten morgen een schip met hulpgoederen zouden kapen, en stel dat dat schip een Frans of Spaans of Noors parlementslid aan boord zou hebben. Zie je de internationale verontwaardiging al voor je?

Sander van Hoorn, je schrijft: 'Na verloop van tijd is zoiets dan vanuit Nederlands perspectief geen nieuws meer.' Sander luister, neem de mensen die je bekritiseren serieus. Probeer ze niet met een kluitje in het riet te sturen. Laat ik speciaal voor jou nog een keer de journalistieke regels uitspellen. Een van de basisprincipes van de commerciele verslaggeving is: Man bijt Hond, en dus niet Hond bijt Man, want dat laatste gebeurt elke dag. Nu doet zich het volgende opmerkelijke voor: zodra de Joden in Israel iets overkomt dan is dat onmiddellijk groot nieuws, alle geconditioneerde reflexen gaan werken, maar zodra de Palestijnen iets overkomt is dat doorgaans geen nieuws. Dus 1 dode Israeli wordt door jou gemeld, dertien dode Palestijnen niet. Ik heb meermaals concrete voorbeelden hiervan gegeven. Joden vallen voor de westerse commerciele massamedia in de categorie Man bijt Hond, Palestijnen in de categorie Hond bijt Man. Terreur tegen de Palestijnen is normaal, contra-terreur tegen de Joden in Israel is abnormaal. Dat is duidelijk.

Met andere woorden, net als de antisemiet verdelen jij en je commerciele collega's de wereld in Joden en niet-Joden. Jij en de meeste van je collega's worden niet gedreven door antisemitisme maar door filosemitisme. Net als voor de antisemiet geldt voor de filosemiet dat Joden geen gewone mensen zijn, ze vormen een apart mensensoort. Dat leidt tot een vaak volkomen onevenwichtige verslaggeving en tot een merkwaardige mentaliteit waarbij rationaliteit, onfatsoenlijk gedrag, terreur en volstrekte politieke gekte ineens geen rol meer spelen, want begaan door Joden en die zijn voor de filosemiet boven de wet verheven. Terecht wees Jan Blokker er onlangs op dat 'na de Tweede Wereldoorlog het jodendom in de christelijke wereld vrijwel heilig [is] verklaard en geen volk dat in die processie zo hard vooroploopt als de Nederlanders.' Het spreekt voor zich dat die houding -- ingegeven door schuldgevoel -- rampzalig is, niet alleen voor de Palestijnse slachtoffers van het zionisme, maar uiteindelijk ook voor de fatsoenlijke joods-Israeli's, die hun land in een schurkenstaat hebben zien veranderen. Kortom, jouw mentaliteit en die van de meeste van je collega's gaat ten koste van de Joden in Israel en de Palestijnen in Israel, waar jij nagenoeg nooit aandacht aan besteedt terwijl ze toch eenvijfde van de bevolking vormen, als ook van de Palestijnen in de door de zionisten geterroriseerde bezette en belegerde gebieden. Je zult begrijpen dat de verdeling tussen Joden en niet-Joden in de wereld altijd een ziekelijk fenomeen is. Het is de hoogste tijd dat de Joden in Israel niet langer meer in de categorie worden geplaatst van Man bijt Hond.

Nu ook dit duidelijk is geworden, gaan we een stapje verder. De Israelische piraterij waarbij een boot wordt gekaapt en de mensen op de boot worden ontvoerd door Israel is volgens jou 'na verloop van tijd... vanuit Nederlands perspectief geen nieuws meer.' Welnu, mijn reactie als oudere collega hierop is dit: Sander van Hoorn, dit is klinkklare nonsens. Het nieuwselement is dit, ik zal het vetgedrukt afbeelden:

Goldstone commissie 'De weigering van Israël om met de onafhankelijke VN- onderzoekscommissie van Richard Goldstone samen te werken, is het bewijs dat het land geen openbare controle wil en geen verantwoording wil afleggen’, aldus Donatella Rovera, hoofd van de Amnesty International onderzoeksmissie naar Gaza en het zuiden van Israël. ‘De internationale gemeenschap, onder leiding van de Veiligheidsraad van de Verenigde Naties, moet al zijn invloed gebruiken om er voor te zorgen dat Israël volledig meewerkt met de Goldstone commissie. Dit is de beste manier om de waarheid boven tafel te krijgen’. Hamas en andere Palestijnse gewapende groepen vuurden honderden raketten op het zuiden van Israël af, waarbij drie Israëlische burgers gedood werden, een flink aantal gewonden vielen en duizenden mensen uit hun huis verdreven werden.’ Deze aanvallen zijn oorlogsmisdaden en daardoor onacceptabel’, voegt Rovera daar aan toe. Het rapport, gebaseerd op bewijsmateriaal verzameld door een Amnesty-delegatie, waaronder een militaire expert, in januari en februari 2009, beschrijft Israël’s gebruik van wapens tegen een burgerbevolking die, zonder mogelijkheid om te vluchten, gevangen zat in Gaza. Om nu een lang verhaal kort te maken: er zijn dus drie nieuwselementen die normaal gesproken zouden hebben geleid tot het maken van een reportage door het NOS-Journaal:

1. Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire. Let wel Sander, iemand die de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede kreeg!

2. Former US Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. Let wel een Amerikaanse volksvertegenwoordigster die door de activiteiten van de pro-Israel lobby haar zetel verloor.

3. De Israëlische strijdkrachten hebben honderden Palestijnse burgers gedood en duizenden huizen vernield in Gaza en daarmee het oorlogsrecht geschonden. Dat concludeert Amnesty International in een nieuw rapport.

Gezien de absurde pro-Israel houding van onze katholieke minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, die zelfs nu nog pleit voor een opwaardering van Israel binnen het EU-Associatieverdrag zou de piraterij van Israel groot nieuws moeten zijn geweest. Per slot van rekening, hier wordt het internationaal recht geschonden.

Welnu Sander, hou op met liegen. Je weet wat de grenzen zijn voor jou om onafhankelijk te berichten. Je bent ingehuurd om Israel zo gunstig mogelijk af te beelden. Vandaar dat de pro-Israel lobby binnen de NOS-redactie geen informatie wenst over deze humanitaire actie. En jij accepteert dat niet alleen, maar je probeert het ook nog te verkopen aan je publiek. Dat laatste is helemaal onvergeeflijk. Sander, probeer journalistiek te bedrijven, hou op met de propaganda.
