Adam Shatz and Pankaj Mishra on Frantz Fanon's Legacy
- Frantz Fanon did not explicitly write about "debt" in a financial sense, but his work can be interpreted as addressing the "debt" of colonialism through themes of historical injustice, psychological wounding, and the struggle for liberation. He argued that colonial powers and systems created a "debt" of violence, exploitation, and cultural alienation that the colonized must work to repay through a radical, anti-colonial project that reclaims identity and humanity.
Frantz Fanon viewed trauma not just as a psychological issue but as a social and political one, with its origins in the violence and oppression of colonialism. He argued that colonial structures inflict psychic wounds leading to internalized racism, a fractured identity, and a loss of self-worth among the colonized. Fanon believed that this trauma has a political voice and can be understood through a "decolonized" psychiatric perspective that accounts for the specific social, political, and economic context of oppression.
