Politics, if we take politics to mean the shaping and discussion of issues, concerns and laws that foster the common good, is no longer the business of our traditional political institutions. These institutions, including the two major political parties, the courts and the press, are not democratic. They are used to crush any vestiges of civic life that calls, as a traditional democracy does, on its citizens to share among all its members the benefits, sacrifices and risks of a nation. They offer only the facade of politics, along with elaborate, choreographed spectacles filled with skillfully manufactured emotion and devoid of real political content. We have devolved into what Alexis de Tocqueville feared—'democratic despotism.'
A. in Economics, Geography and Public Administration.'
Martin Luther King, Jr. said that 'those who love peace must learn to organize as effectively as those who love war.' Tragically the leaders of the NATO countries do love wear and the arms profits from warfare. Clearly, they are very well organized. To thinking people, the current expansion of NATO is eroding the minds of politic ands while infusing fear into the minds of real people. The new arms race and massive expenditures on weapons in a time of growing global hunger, poverty and unemployment is poisoning international relations, further reinforcing corruption of decision making in the UN Security Council and undermining the wellbeing of billions of world citizens. For change, we must turn to youth throughout the workld who have the courage to organize and protest injustice, inequality. Their in-the-straat demands for the right to expect peace, social justice and a sustainable future is negated everyday NATO is enabled to expand into an unauthorized world police force with illicit and dangerous military credentials. Ineffective as a peacemaker although the UN has become, NATO has no proven interest whatsoever in peace and non-violent coexistence. Warfare is the most profitable business of all. The military arms industry keeps entire economics afloat. Peace would put NATO out of the large scale and rewarding killing business.
WASHINGTON — Weapons sales by the United States tripled in 2011 to a record high, driven by major arms sales to Persian Gulf allies concerned about Iran’s regional ambitions, according to a new study for Congress.
Overseas weapons sales by the United States totaled $66.3 billion last year, or more than three-quarters of the global arms market, valued at $85.3 billion in 2011.
In one of his great movies, James Dean played the part of a rebel without a cause. He was a young thug, violent of manner with questionable purpose, who appeared not to fully understand his own aggression. Today NATO is a much more dangerous thug, very violent in manner with questionable purpose but financed and backstopped by an empire in demise. NATO understands its own aggression as a device to encircle the world with military capacity, gift the arms manufacturing corporations amongst its member states with permanent demand and openly threaten states it deems to have potential for competitive leadership. A redundant military alliance today long after the Cold War passed, NATO constantly seeks new resources, new weapons and new members to pursue violence against non-existent enemies, creating opportunities for warfare that require nothing more than dialogue, cooperation in a mature and civilized manner. There is nothing mature or civilized about NATO, or its leadership,
aldus de voormalige onder-secretaris-generaal van de Verenigde Naties, die in 2003 'was presented with the Gandhi International Peace Award in recognition of his work drawing attention to the plight of Iraqis. In 2007 he presented the same award to the website Media Lens, whose co-founder David Edwards had interviewed Halliday in May 2000 about his work in Iraq. In 2009 Denis Halliday agreed to become a Patron of the Gandhi Foundation, and he presented the annual peace award to the Children's Legal Centre.
voorzitter van The Joint Chiefs of Staff (1960-62).
Als Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
Lemnitzer weathered the Bay of Pigs crisis and the early years of American involvement in Vietnam. He was also required to testify before the United States Senate Foreign Affairs Committee about his knowledge of the activities of Major General Edwin Walker, who had been dismissed from the Army over alleged attempts to promote his political beliefs in the military…
Lemnitzer approved the plans known as Operation Northwoods in 1962, a proposed plan to discredit the Castro regime and create support for military action against Cuba by staging false flag genuine acts of terrorism and developing 'a Communist Cuban terror campaign in the Miami area, in other Florida cities and even in Washington.' Lemnitzer presented the plans to Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara on March 13, 1962. It is unclear how McNamara reacted, but three days later President Kennedy told the general that there was no chance that America would take military action against Cuba. Within a few months, after the denial of Operation Northwoods, Lemnitzer was denied another term as JCS chairman. Author Richard Cottrell suspects Lemnitzer of the key role in the Kennedy assassination, out of revenge for the demotion and for being soft on communism.
In November 1962, Lemnitzer was appointed as commander of U.S. forces in Europe, and as Supreme Allied Commander of NATO in January 1963 until July 1969. This period encompassed the Cyprus crisis of 1963–1964 and the withdrawal of NATO forces from France in 1966.
In zijn boek GLADIO. NATO'S DAGGER at the HEART of EUROPE (2012) schreef de Britse journalist Richard Cotttrell dat deze generaal Lemnitzer, voorstander van 'genuine acts of terrorism,' zoals Wikipedia stelt,
was rudely sacked and effectively exiled by President John F. Kennecdy, on justifiable grounds of justifiable grounds of rank insubordination. With Lemnitzer's colossal ego had permitted him to coldly propose a scheme to JFK calling for Mafia hoodlums to shoot Americans walking about the streets and then blame Cuban subversives. A looking-glass war fought on European soil with identical methods and similar alliances came quite naturally to such a twisted mind…
Lemnitzer was among the chief architects of the Strategy of Tension, and brought with him a wealth of experience gained from earlier commands in Southeast Asia. There and later in the Pentagon he was under the spell of the immensely unorthodox air force colonel (later general) Edward Lansdale. His speciality lay in bizarre voodoo-like schemes of pay-war and false-flag operations. Lansdale was likely the inspiration for the manic Nortwoods conspiracy…. It was no accidental coincidences between Lemnitzer's fascination for Lansdale's eclectic methods and the morbid orders that went out to Gladio units under NATO command to kill innocent citizens quietly going about their lives. This was the selfsame blueprint Lemnitzer had proposed to the appalled John F. Kennedy to justify invading Cuba.
Belangrijk isn het volgende te weten:
In response to a request for pretexts for military intervention by the Chief of Operations of the Cuba Project, Brig. Gen. Edward Lansdale, the document listed methods, and outlined plans, that the authors believed would garner public and international support for U.S. military intervention in Cuba. According to Jacob Hornberger:
The plan called for U.S. personnel to disguise themselves as agents of the Cuban government and to engage in terrorist attacks on the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay. It also called for terrorist attacks within the United States that would be conducted by pro-U.S. forces disguising themselves as Cuban agents.
According to the documents, the plan called for the following:
1. Since it would seem desirable to use legitimate provocation as the basis for U.S. military intervention in Cuba a cover and deception plan, to include requisite preliminary actions such as has been developed in response to Task 33 c, could be executed as an initial effort to provoke Cuban reactions. Harassment plus deceptive actions to convince the Cubans of imminent invasion would be emphasized. Our military posture throughout execution of the plan will allow a rapid change from exercise to intervention if Cuban response justifies.
2. A series of well coordinated incidents will be planned to take place in and around Guantanamo to give genuine appearance of being done by hostile Cuban forces.
3. United States would respond by executing offensive operations to secure water and power supplies, destroying artillery and mortar emplacements which threaten the base.
4. Commence large scale United States military operations…
In addition to Operation Northwoods, under the Operation Mongoose program the U.S. Department of Defense had a number of similar proposals to be taken against the Cuban regime of Fidel Castro.
Twelve of these proposals come from a 2 February 1962 memorandum entitled 'Possible Actions to Provoke, Harass or Disrupt Cuba,' written by Brig. Gen. William H. Craig and submitted to Brig. Gen. Edward Lansdale, the commander of the Operation Mongoose project.
The memorandum outlines Operation Bingo, a plan to 'create an incident which has the appearance of an attack on U.S. facilities (GMO) in Cuba, thus providing an excuse for use of U.S. military might to overthrow the current government of Cuba.'
It also includes Operation Dirty Trick, a plot to blame Castro if the 1962 Mercury manned space flight carrying John Glenn crashed, saying: 'The objective is to provide irrevocable proof that, should the MERCURY manned orbit flight fail, the fault lies with the Communists et al. Cuba [sic].' It continues, 'This to be accomplished by manufacturing various pieces of evidence which would prove electronic interference on the part of the Cubans.'
Even after General Lemnitzer lost his job as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Joint Chiefs of Staff still planned false-flag pretext operations at least into 1963. A different U.S. Department of Defense policy paper created in 1963 discussed a plan to make it appear that Cuba had attacked a member of the Organization of American States (OAS) so that the United States could retaliate. The U.S. Department of Defense document says of one of the scenarios, 'A contrived ''Cuban'' attack on an OAS member could be set up, and the attacked state could be urged to take measures of self-defense and request assistance from the U.S. and OAS.'
The plan expressed confidence that by this action, 'the U.S. could almost certainly obtain the necessary two-thirds support among OAS members for collective action against Cuba.'
Included in the nations the Joint Chiefs suggested as targets for covert attacks were Jamaica and Trinidad-Tobago. Since both were members of the British Commonwealth, the Joint Chiefs hoped that by secretly attacking them and then falsely blaming Cuba, the United States could incite the people of the United Kingdom into supporting a war against Castro. As the U.S. Department of Defense report noted:
'Any of the contrived situations described above are inherently, extremely risky in our democratic system in which security can be maintained, after the fact, with very great difficulty. If the decision should be made to set up a contrived situation it should be one in which participation by U.S. personnel is limited only to the most highly trusted covert personnel. This suggests the infeasibility of the use of military units for any aspect of the contrived situation.'
The U.S. Department of Defense report even suggested covertly paying a person in the Castro government to attack the United States: 'The only area remaining for consideration then would be to bribe one of Castro's subordinate commanders to initiate an attack on [the U.S. Navy base at] Guantanamo.'
Groeten, Ben
