Israel. A Failed State

'Israeli Army Detains Journalist Working For the New York Times

A freelance journalist on assignment for the New York Times magazine wasdetained today by the Israeli army in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh. The journalist, Ben Ehrenreich, the son of famed progressive Barbara Ehrenreich, was reportedly detained by the Israeli army for two hours, though he has been released.
Ehrenreich was at the weekly protest in Nabi Saleh, a village that participates in non-violent demonstrations against Israeli settlements and the expropriation of Nabi Saleh’s water by the settlement of Halamish. The demonstrations face repression by the Israeli military in the form of tear gas, arrests and harassment of village activists who organize the demonstrations. Late last year, Nabi Saleh resident Mustafa Tamimi was killed after the Israel Defense Forces fired a tear gas canister at his head while Tamimi was throwing stones at a military truck in his village.
Ehrenreich is the author of an extensive feature on Nabi Saleh and the larger issue of Palestinian access to water in Harper’s Magazine.
Journalists are routinely harassed by the IDF in occupied Palestine, from being arrested to having their equipment broken. But the fact that Ehrenreich is an American journalist working for the New York Times has garnered attention.'
