John Hanchette, a journalism professor at St. Bonaventure University, and one of the founding editors of USA TODAY related the following to DU researcher Leuren Moret. He stated that he had prepared news breaking stories about the effects of DU on Gulf War soldiers and Iraqi citizens, but that each time he was ready to publish, he received a phone call from the Pentagon asking him not to print the story. He has since been replaced as editor of USA TODAY. Dr. Keith Baverstock, The World Health Organization's chief expert on radiation and health for 11 years and author of an unpublished study has charged that his report "on the cancer risk to civilians in Iraq from breathing uranium contaminated dust" was also deliberately suppressed. The information released by the U.S. Dept. of Defense is not reliable, according to some sources even within the military.

Ik vermoed ook dat onze respectabele premier het gebruik van verarmd uranium heel christelijk vindt, als het maar door de VS, VK en Israël gebeurt (niet door ons, toch? dat zal de FNV wel hebben tegengehouden :) ). Ik heb in ieder geval nergens gehoord dat hij tegen de Amerikanen zei dat het niet netjes is.
Misschien is het een idee om onze premier een paar mooie plaatjes uit het effecten-van-verarmd-uranium-prentenboek toe te sturen?
Of zouden we dan als terroristen worden opgesloten, wegens het toesturen van intimiderend en als-bedreigend-te-ervaren materiaal?
Ik ben eigenlijk vergeten of je wel gehoord hebt dat de Nederlandse vertegenwoordiger (als een van de weinigen) bij de VN tegen een voornemen heeft gestemd om de effecten van verarmd uranium uit te zoeken. Nota Bene een CDA parlemntslid heeft hierover eenvraaggesteld aande regering.

"Effects of the use of armaments and ammunitions containing
depleted uranium
The General Assembly,
Guided by the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United
Nations and the rules of humanitarian international law,
Determined to promote multilateralism as an essential means to carry forward
negotiations on arms regulation and disarmament,
Convinced that as humankind is more aware of the need to take immediate
measures to protect the environment, any event that could jeopardize such efforts
requires urgent attention to implement the required measures,
Taking into consideration the potential harmful effects of the use of armaments
and ammunitions containing depleted uranium on human health and the
environment,
1. Requests the Secretary-General to seek the views of Member States and
relevant international organizations on the effects of the use of armaments and
ammunitions containing depleted uranium, and to submit a report on this subject to
the General Assembly at its sixty-third session;
2. Decides to include in the provisional agenda of its sixty-third session the
item entitled “Effects of the use of armaments and ammunitions containing depleted
uranium”. "
