Geert Mak en de VS

Succes bewijst in het Westen het grote gelijk. Ook in zijn in 2012 verschenen bestseller Reizen zonder John blijft Mak verheugd beweren dat de 'soft power'  van de Verenigde Staten als grootmacht 'nog altijd sterk aanwezig,' is, waarbij hij het begrip als volgt verduidelijkt:

Soft power is, in de kern, de overtuigingskracht van een staat, de kracht om het debat naar zich toe te trekken, om de agenda van de wereldpolitiek te bepalen,

zonder in dit verband te vermelden dat de 'soft power' van de VS altijd begeleid wordt door de 'hard power' van 's wereld's zwaarst bewapende land, waarvan de militaire uitgaven

Dwarfs Rest Of The World. The United States spends 58 percent of the total defense dollars paid out by the world's top 10 military powers, which combined for $1.19 trillion in military funding in 2011. With its unparalleled global reach, the US outspends China, the next-biggest military power, by nearly 6-to-1.

De eindconclusie van de BBC-documentaire Hannibal. Conquerer of Rome is dat, zoals elk geschoold mens weet, Rome ‘the first imperialist superpower’ was en dat de Romeinen ‘shaped the world we live in today.’ In concreto:

The Roman mindset does not really allow for peaceful cooexistence with the other nations. In their worldview there could only be a single dominant power: Rome!

Inderdaad, Rome als ‘imperialistische superpower heeft de wereld geschapen waarin wij vandag de dag leven.’ Een wereld waarin de huidige ‘superpower’ geen ‘vreedzame coexistentie accepteert,’ omdat er maar één ‘dominante macht kan zijn,’ te weten: de VS. Deze door Mak verzwegen context werpt een heel andere licht op zijn stelling dat de VS 'de kracht' bezit 'om het debat naar zich toe te trekken,' de als geruststellend bedoelde boodschap waarmee hij zijn Europa doortrekt om her en der te vertellen dat 'de Amerikanen hele optimistische mensen [zijn] vergeleken met ons fatalistische Europeanen,' en dat ‘Amerika er over een halve eeuw beter voor[staat] dan Europa,' en vooral ook dat 'Als je invloed en macht wilt hebben, moet je groots zijn. Dat is iets wat we in Europa van ze kunnen leren.’  Dankzij al deze voortreffelijke kwaliteiten is de VS als ‘vitale democratie’ na de Tweede Wereldoorlog ‘decennialang’ de ‘ordebewaker en politieagent’ van de wereld geweest. Vanwege ondermeer deze leugens wordt Geert Mak door de Nederlandse massamedia gezien als groot kenner van zowel 'Europa' als 'Amerika.' Zijn propaganda staat evenwel haaks op de werkelijkheid, zoals blijkt uit de visie van onder andere de voormalige Amerikaanse president Carter:

August 02, 2015 "Information Clearing House" - "The Intercept" -  Former president Jimmy Carter said Tuesday on the nationally syndicated radio show the Thom Hartmann Program that the United States is now an “oligarchy” in which “unlimited political bribery” has created “a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors.” Both Democrats and Republicans, Carter said, “look upon this unlimited money as a great benefit to themselves.”

Carter was responding to a question from Hartmann about recent Supreme Court decisions on campaign financing like Citizens United.

Transcript:

HARTMANN: Our Supreme Court has now said, “unlimited money in politics.” It seems like a violation of principles of democracy. … Your thoughts on that?
CARTER: It violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president. And the same thing applies to governors and U.S. senators and congress members. So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over. … The incumbents, Democrats and Republicans, look upon this unlimited money as a great benefit to themselves. Somebody’s who’s already in Congress has a lot more to sell to an avid contributor than somebody who’s just a challenger.

I’ve added Carter’s statement to this list of politicians acknowledging that money controls politics. Please let me know if you have other good examples.
