Aanbieding handtekeningen aan Bedrijfstakpensioenfondsen
Amsterdam, 7 mei 2009 --Opgeluisterd door gezang van de Raging Grannies gaat de Campagne tegen Wapenhandel op 11 mei de Algemene Ledenvergadering van Bedrijfstakpensioenfondsen oproepen tot blijvende aandacht voor ethisch beleggen. Met de actie 'Pensioen met goed fatsoen' roepen we de pensioenfondsen op om niet te investeren in kernwapens, clustermunitie en landmijnen, en in bedrijven die meer dan 5% omzet halen uit wapenproductie.
De Campagne tegen Wapenhandel heeft uitgezocht in welke defensiebedrijven en wapensystemen ons pensioengeld wordt belegd, en naar welke landen deze wapens worden geëxporteerd. Nederlands pensioengeld zit onder meer in de productie van Hellfire raketten, nieuwe Franse en Britse kernwapens en hypermoderne bommenwerpers. Ook bij de meest recente update van het onderzoek in april 2009 was dit nog het geval. Op dit moment zijn veel pensioenfondsen bezig een ethisch beleggingsbeleid te ontwikkelen. Het is belangrijk dat beleggingen in de wapenindustrie hierin worden meegenomen.
“Juist nu veel aandacht uitgaat naar de financiële crisis mag ethisch beleggen niet van de agenda verdwijnen” zegt Wendela de Vries van de Campagne tegen Wapenhandel. “Wie wil er op z’n oude dag nou profiteren van winsten uit de wapenindustrie?”
Op 11 mei 2009 vindt de Algemene Ledenvergadering van de Vereniging voor Bedrijfstakpensioenfondsen plaats met als thema 'Verantwoord Vertrouwen'. Deze vergadering richt zich –begrijpelijkerwijs- op het herstellen van het vertrouwen in het financieel beleid van de fondsen. Maar dat mag geen reden zijn om verantwoord beleggen van de agenda te schrappen! We gaan op 11 mei protestkaarten en protestmails aan de voorzitter van de Bedrijfstakpensioenfondsen overhandigen. Dit doen we op een ludieke wijze, en onder muzikale begeleiding van de Raging Grannies!

-Editing with Final Cut Pro - taking the rushes generated while shooting participants learn how to create final rough cuts
With increasing demands on journalists to be multi-skilled and be able to shoot video themselves, these courses gives instruction on working as an independent, solo broadcaster. This course have been developed in response to the increasing demands on journalists to become multi-skilled and embrace the rise of video journalism. It is taught using a mixture of theory, hands-on practical training and constructive feedback suitable for budding short documentary makers and journalists wanting to widen their skills base

Op 17 mei verschijnt de Nederlandse vertaling van het
Transition Handbook: het handboek van de internationale
Transition Towns-beweging. Het Transitie-handboek, met als
ondertitel 'van olie-afhankelijkheid naar lokale veerkracht'
is geschreven door Rob Hopkins, initiator van het Transition
Towns-concept.
Transition Towns zijn lokale gemeenschappen (grote en kleine
steden, dorpen, wijken, eilanden) die zelf aan de slag gaan
om hun manier van wonen, werken en leven minder
olie-afhankelijk te maken. Peak Oil en klimaatverandering
zijn de belangrijkste drijfveren om in actie te komen voor
verandering van onderop! Transition Towns werken aan
oplossingen en laten zien hoe je die zelf organiseert. Het
Transition Towns-concept doet een beroep op de eigen
inzichten, wijsheid, creativiteit en ervaringen van gewone
mensen. De kracht van het concept is de aanpak met hoofd,
hart en handen.
Het doel is ambitieus: je eigen stad, wijk, dorp of (ei)land
voorbereiden op de combinatie van een permanente oliecrisis
(Peak Oil), de klimaatcrisis, en de noodzaak om te schakelen
naar een economie die niet afhankelijk is van fossiele

Het Engelse plaatsje Totnes werd in 2006, op initiatief

activiteiten. Ook in Vlaanderen kent de beweging een
vliegende start.
Het Engelse Transition Handbook biedt een schat aan
informatie en inspiratie voor lokale initiatiefnemers; er was
dan ook grote behoefte aan een Nederlandse vertaling. Die is
er nu! De integrale vertaling is aangevuld met drie
hoofdstukken die niet in de Engelse uitgave staan:

In 1948, toen de staat Israël werd gesticht, kwam het westelijke deel van Jeruzalem onder Israëlische controle. In 1967 bezette en annexeerde Israël het oostelijke deel. Sindsdien hebben opeenvolgende Israëlische regeringen maatregelen genomen om van Jeruzalem een stad met een Joodse meerderheid te maken. Op Palestijnse moslims en christenen wordt druk uitgeoefend om te vertrekken.
De documentaire 'Jerusalem... the East Side Story' legt Israëls streven naar controle over Jeruzalem bloot. Maar ook de toekomst komt aan bod: Jeruzalem is de sleutel tot vrede. Prominente Israëlische en Palestijnse politici, mensenrechtenactivisten en deskundigen vertellen hoe ontwikkelingen in Jeruzalem het vredesproces torpederen.

NAAR EEN OP RECHTEN GEBASEERDE OPLOSSING IN PALESTINA Op zaterdagmiddag 16 mei organiseert het Nederlands Palestina Komitee een openbare discussiebijeenkomst met:
# Ali Abunimah (Electronic Intifada; publicist; Verenigde Staten) en
# Steven Friedman (Universiteit van Johannesburg; ANC; Zuid-Afrika).
Tegen de achtergrond van escalerend geweld en groeiende invloed van extreem-rechts in Israel zullen zij hun ideeën ontvouwen over een op rechten gebaseerde oplossing van het conflict in Palestina.

On 2 March 2009, major international donors convened in Sharm al-Sheikh
to collectively respond to the destruction caused by Israel’s 23 day
military offensive on the Gaza Strip. During the conference, a total of
$4.5 billion was pledged in reconstruction funds for Gaza. In light of
the extensive destruction across the Gaza Strip, especially the
destruction of civilian homes and infrastructure, reconstruction is urgent.
However, as Palestinian and Israeli human rights organisations, we must
note that by agreeing to reconstruction without specific, binding
assurances from the State of Israel, international donors are
effectively underwriting Israel’s illegal actions in the occupied
Palestinian territory (oPt). International law – including,
international human rights law, international humanitarian law (IHL),
and the law of state responsibility for wrongful acts – places specific,
binding obligations on the State of Israel (based, inter alia, on its
duties as an Occupying Power) with respect to the maintenance and
development of normal life in occupied territory. By repeatedly
restricting their action to providing aid, without holding Israel
accountable for its specific obligations, international donors are
relieving Israel of its legally binding responsibilities.
Individual donor States – as High Contracting Parties to the Geneva
Conventions – are under an obligation to ensure respect for the
Conventions at all times. They are also bound by international law which
prohibits complicity in internationally wrongful acts. By repeatedly
covering the cost of the occupation, without demanding accountability
from Israel, the international community is implicitly encouraging
violations of international law perpetrated by Israeli forces in
occupied territory: individual donor States may thus be acting contrary
to their own legal obligations.
We are concerned that such action negatively impacts upon respect for
the rule of law, and is in violation of States’ legal obligations.
Ultimately, the continuation of this policy may reduce the protections
afforded to civilian populations, further exposing them to violations of
the laws of war.
The legal and contextual situation relating to this issue has been
outlined in a joint fact sheet, ‘Human Rights Organisations Call for an
End to International Donor Complicity in Israeli Violations of
International Law’, released today.'

Beste Lezers,
Deze maand mei wordt 61 jaar Nakba herdacht. Het afgelopen jaar (60 jaar Nakba) heeft UCP op diverse manieren aandacht gegeven aan Palestijnse vluchtelingen. Het jaar is afgelopen maand symbolisch afgesloten door het versturen van persoonlijke boodschappen aan Palestijnse vluchtelingenkinderen. Foto’s van deze kinderen met hun opa of oma vormden de openluchttentoonstelling die UCP in december 2008 organiseerde. Het publiek kon op een kaart een boodschap aan een van de kinderen schrijven. Een paar voorbeelden: “Verlies de hoop nooit, zonder hoop is er geen toekomst. Strijd altijd voor je rechten. Ieder mens, ieder kind is uniek. Jij ook,” en “Ik wens je een goed leven in vrijheid en vrede.”
Sabeel, het Palestijnse oecumenisch theologisch centrum, organiseert van 22 juli tot 2 augustus een conferentie voor jongvolwassenen. Het doel van deze conferentie is om jongvolwassenen te trainen en te voorzien van vaardigheden en kennis om te werken aan rechtvaardigheid en vrede voor iedereen in het Heilige Land. VN onderzoeksrapport kritisch over Israëlisch legeroptreden in de Gazastrook
Op 5 mei is een intern onderzoeksrapport van de VN via de Inner City Press naar buiten gelekt. Het rapport is geschreven door een onderzoekscommissie van de VN die is ingesteld door secretaris-generaal Ban Ki-Moon. In het rapport worden negen verschillende incidenten geanalyseerd die plaats hebben gevonden tussen 27 december en 19 januari, waarbij het Israëlische legeroptreden in de Gazastrook hard wordt bekritiseerd. Het rapport eindigt met een aantal aanbevelingen.

Pausvergunning
Mary zegt altijd dat ze een hekel heeft aan plannen. Er gebeuren zoveel onverwachte dingen. Ze is nu ontregeld vanwege de ziekte van haar zus, Janet. Deze heeft een zware operatie in Jeruzalem ondergaan en pas op het laatste moment, vanwege de tussenkomst van een menselijke soldaat bij het militaire hoofdkwartier bij Hebron, lukte het Mary om een vergunning te krijgen dagelijks naar Jeruzalem op bezoek te gaan. Net als bij de andere Palestijnse christenen uit Bethlehem die een 'Paasvergunning' kregen, loopt haar vergunning 14 mei af, een dag na het aanstaande Pausbezoek aan Bethlehem. "Tijdens het Pausbezoek doen ze net alsof alle christenen vrij kunnen reizen; als de Paus weg is, gaat de bak weer dicht."
Plannen moet je hier doen met een scenario B achter de hand voor het geval scenario A niet doorgaat. Mary en ik zijn het wel eens oneens over die noodzaak van plannen. Tegen een Hollander moet je tenslotte niet zeggen dat je niet moet plannen. Mary vindt meestal dat je beter nog even kan wachten.

IDF draft dodgers are heroes, not criminals

Yitzhak Laor, our best protest poet, may soon face arrest. On Independence Day eve he published a poem in Haaretz's literary supplement with the lines: "Perhaps shame prevents me from getting up to embrace my son / And warning him of those who want to enlist him." Arresting Laor for having written such lines may sound like fiction, but something similar has already happened. Last week nine activists from New Profile, a feminist-pacifist organization formed in 1998 that aims to demilitarize Israeli society, were arrested on suspicion of incitement and assisting draft dodgers. The police raided their homes and confiscated their computers. The military advocate general requested the raid, the attorney general obliged and the police carried it out.

If I were a Palestinian, of any age, I would declare an all-out war on all terrorist groups andfulfill the demand of the Jews to recognize the State of Israel as the state of the Jewish people. Furthermore, as a present on the birthday of the Jewish people, as it completes 61 years of existence, I would announce that I also respect its Declaration of Independence of May 14, 1948. I would do this on the condition that all the state's principles, to the last one, apply to the territories controlled by the Jewish state - to every last foot of territory.

Yad Vashem fires employee who compared Holocaust to Nakba
Yad Vashem has fired an instructor who compared the trauma of Jewish Holocaust survivorswith the trauma experienced by the Palestinian people in Israel's War of Independence. ItamarShapira, 29, of Jerusalem, was fired before Passover from his job as a docent at the HolocaustMartyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority, after a teacher with a group of yeshiva studentsfrom Efrat made a complaint. Shapira had worked at Yad Vashem for three and a half years.
This is the first time that Yad Vashem has fired a guide over political differences, aninstitution official said Wednesday. Shapira confirmed, in a telephone conversation withHaaretz, that he had spoken to visitors about the 1948 massacre at Deir Yassin. He said hedid so because the ruins of the Arab village, today a part of Jerusalem's Givat Shaulneighborhood, can be seen as one leaves Yad Vashem.
