I recently went on to discuss the state of America this 4th of July. The reality is that we are on a track towards despotic rule — not all of our democratic systems have crumbled entirely, but none ever do immediately. The shift to authoritarianism is a process that unfolds, and here in the United States, the structures holding in place our democratic systems have been being rolled back for a long time. With Trump, that roll back has only been accelerated.
