Rights group calls on US to ‘decouple’ interests with Israel

DAWN, a human rights advocacy group based in Washington, DC, says the Israeli attacks on Iran are “unlawful” and “unprovoked”.

“The United States should completely decouple its interests from Israel’s reckless war-making and refuse any support, material or political, for these attacks on Iran,” Raed Jarrar, DAWN’s advocacy director, said in a statement.

“We are now seeing Israel unlawfully bombarding Iranian neighborhoods allegedly housing Iranian officials with the same maliciousness it has bombed Lebanon and Gaza.”

Not a question of if Iran will respond to Israel’s attack, but when

Al Jazeera correspondent Dorsa Jabbari said to expect retaliation from Iran in the near future, with meetings reportedly under way between top officials in Tehran.

“[There’s] full-on pressure from inside the country. Even those that may not completely support the government would expect the system to respond. I think it’s very clear now,” Jabbari said.

“It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when Iran will respond,” she said.

Iran’s command and control remains in place: Analyst

Continuing with his interview with Al Jazeera from Tehran, Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Dareini said Iran’s military structure remains intact despite the loss of key military leaders such as Hossein Salami, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

“That is a big loss for Iran, but the command-and-control structure remains in place. No matter whether one or two top military commanders are assassinated, the structure remains intact,” he said.

“Iran is in the process of making a fateful decision in the hours to come. There will be retaliation. This time, very much different from the previous ones,” he added.

Israel attack part of a ‘broad regional plan’ made with approval of US: Analyst

Ali Akbar Dareini, a researcher at the Centre for Strategic Studies, told Al Jazeera from Tehran that Israel’s latest attack is a declaration of war on Iran, likely made with the approval of the White House.

“This is a declaration of war, there will be dire consequences … There is absolutely no way that Iran cannot respond to this act of aggression,” Dareini said.

“Just have a look at what has happened in the past hours. The US evacuated its embassy staff from Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East … President Trump spoke of a likely Israeli attack on Iran just hours before this attack. What does it tell us?”

“The United States had prior knowledge. It already was informed in advance of this attack – and very, very likely, it was carried out in coordination with the United States. We should not look at this attack as an incident or singular unilateral action, but part of a broad regional plan that is taking the Middle East towards another escalation with unpredictable consequences,” he added.

China warns citizens in Israel to prepare for potential attacks

China has issued security situation advisories to its citizens in Israel and Iran, warning those in Israel to prepare for possible missile and drone attacks.

The Chinese embassy in Israel told citizens there on Friday to strengthen their security precautions, avoid going out unnecessarily or to areas surrounding military units and sensitive institutions as the “security situation on the ground is complex and severe”.

In a separate notice, the Chinese embassy in Iran also advised citizens and enterprises based there to pay close attention to developments and enhance their security awareness and precautions.

The Israeli military announced earlier that the country’s civil and public security level had been raised to “essential activity”.

“The guidelines include: a ban on educational activities, gatherings, and workplaces, except for essential businesses,” the military said.

Israel’s Transportation Ministry has confirmed that it has also closed the country’s airspace for arrivals and departures until further notice.

Iran attacks may embolden Israel’s critics in Washington

Over the past few weeks, polar opposites on the right and left ideological spectrum of US politics have warned Trump to resist being dragged by Israel into war with Iran.

Close allies of the US president, including influential conservative commentator Tucker Carlson and Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene have made the case that conflict with Tehran would go against Trump’s “America First” agenda.

“Americans don’t want to bomb Iran because the secular government of Israel says that Iran is on the verge of developing a nuclear bomb any day now,” Taylor Greene said in a social media post yesterday.

“We’ve been told that for the past 20 years.”

Israel’s first wave of strikes against Iran came less than three hours after Trump reiterated his commitment to diplomacy with Tehran.

Support for Israel in the US political establishment remains formidable, but it has been showing cracks in recent years, both in public opinion and among politicians, particularly progressive Democrats.

Conflict with Iran, however, will cement views on the right that Israeli and US interests are not one and the same, and could open the door for the so-called “America Firsters” to start questioning the alliance altogether.

Unconditional backing for Israel may start to slip in both major US parties.

“This is a disaster of Trump and Netanyahu’s own making, and now the region risks spiralling toward a new, deadly conflict,” Murphy said in a statement.

“A war between Israel and Iran may be good for Netanyahu’s domestic politics, but it will likely be disastrous for both the security of Israel, the United States, and the rest of the region.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader: Israel must prepare for ‘bitter and painful’ fate following attack

Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency, or IRNA, has published a statement from the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei:

    The great nation of Iran!

The Zionist regime, at dawn today, opened its dirty and bloody hand to a crime in our beloved country and revealed its evil nature more than ever by striking residential centres.

The regime must expect severe punishment.

The powerful hand of the Islamic Republic’s armed forces will not abandon him, God willing.

Several commanders and scientists were martyred in the enemy attacks. Their successors and colleagues will immediately resume their duties, God willing.

With this crime, the Zionist regime prepared for itself a bitter and painful fate, and it will definitely receive it.

Israel’s attack aims at dismantling ‘command and control’ in Iran: Al Jazeera correspondent

Senior Al Jazeera correspondent Ali Hashem says Israel’s multilayered attack is targeting both Iran’s ballistic missile programme and its nuclear programme.

“It’s a very complex attack, multilayered, and I don’t see this as just aimed at the nuclear programme,” Hashem said.

By reportedly assassinating leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as well as Iranian nuclear scientists, Hashem said the Israelis had “aimed at the very system, and they’re trying in one way or another to dismantle it and to cut the links to the networks … to freeze the command and control”.

“It’s clear that this is the octopus strike strategy. They start with the arms and the head, just like what happened in the region,” he said.
