A lot of people are frustrated that what they're hearing from the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the IDF Spokesperson's Unit about what's going on in Gaza is not an accurate reflection of what's going on on the ground. We are too. But many of us have served in previous military operations in the Gaza Strip in the past, and we've also been paying attention to Israel's policy on Gaza between the wars for years now.
On Thursday May 20th at 1pm EST / 6pm UK / 8pm Jerusalem time, we'll be holding an online information session via Zoom to talk about how we fight in Gaza: how the IDF chooses its targets to bomb, what it considers to be legitimate 'collateral damage', and what happens to the civilians caught in the crossfire. We don’t yet have a clear picture of this round, but we do know what it looked like in previous operations based on testimonies from soldiers who served in Gaza in the previous military campaigns and those who took part in enforcing the siege on Gaza since 2005.
Program:
* Opening Remarks: Tania Hary, Executive Director of Gisha, the Legal Center for Freedom of Movement
* Speaker: Avner Gvaryahu, Executive Director of Breaking the Silence
Avner served in the Paratroopers Brigade from 2004-07 and spent much of his service in the occupied territories. He will share his story of serving in the occupied territories and analyze Israel's strategy vis-à-vis the Gaza Strip.
