Plus, AR's latest from Chomsky on Linguistics

Cardoza Law professor and public intellectual Stanley Fish praises Noam Chomsky in
The New York Times this week, in an op-ed titled Scholarship and Politics. Fish attended the recent 2013 John Dewey lectures, hosted by the Columbia University philosophy department, and came away raving about Professor Chomsky. His political views make rare appearances in the pages of The New York Times, and his teaching career at MIT's Linguistics Department is often underestimated.

AR has been covering Chomsky's contributions to the field of linguistics since its inception. Our Chomsky Linguistics recordings are found in a special subsection of ourvast archive. Here are our latest additions to the series:

Noam Chomsky - What is Language?

Every five years the International Permanent Committee of Linguists (CIPL) organizes The International Congress of Linguists (ICL). The Societe Suisse de Linguistique (SSL) hosted the 19th congress in Geneva. The theme was 'The Language-Cognition Interface.' Noam Chomsky gave this jocular keynote address in which he marches through evolving definitions of terms in the field of linguistics.

Noam Chomsky - Pedagogy of the Oppressed

At Harvard, Noam Chomsky, Howard Gardner and Bruno della Chiesa discuss noted Brazilian educator Paolo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed on the 45th anniversary of the publication of one of the most important books of the 20th century.

Noam Chomsky in Denver on Magna Carta: Then & Now

Noam Chomsky, by any measure has led a most extraordinary life. In one index he is ranked as the eighth most cited person in history, right up there with Aristotle, Shakespeare, Marx, Plato and Freud. The legendary MIT professor practically invented modern linguistics. In addition to his pioneering work in that field he has been a leading voice for peace and social justice for many decades. The New Statesmancalls him, "The conscience of the American people." Chris Hedges says he is "America's greatest intellectual" who "makes the powerful, as well as their liberal apologists, deeply uncomfortable." He is the author of scores of books, includingHopes & ProspectsOccupyHow The World Works, and Power Systems with David Barsamian.
