Ik moest hieraan denken toen Sonja mij het volgende citaat mailde: 'We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. Most European capitals are targets for our air force…. We have the capability to take the world down with us. And I can assure you that that will happen before Israel goes under.'

'1973: Israelis catch Soviet spy ring in high levels of Israeli government and make it clear to Soviets they have produced "suitcase nukes" they could sneak into Russia. Egypt and Syria attack unprepared Israeli forces in Sinai and Golan Heights on the Jewish fast in Yom Kippur War. Israel goes on nuclear alert and begins to ready nuclear weapons for actual use, forcing the U.S. to airlift them weapons and to start redeploying nuclear armed ships and airplanes. When Soviets started talking about sending in Russian troops, Israel again goes on nuclear alert. Washington pressures Israel to accept a cease-fire. 1974: Defense Minister Dayan visits South Africa to discuss testing a nuclear weapon there.'

'From Seymour Hersh's best selling book "The Samson Option", quoting former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon: "We are much more important than (Americans) think. We can take the middle east with us whenever we go." And quoting a “former Israeli govt official” with “first hand knowledge of his government’s nuclear weapons program”: “We can still remember the smell of Auschwitz and Treblinka. Next time we’ll take all of you with us.” Hersh's book details at length Israel's targeting of the Soviet Union; their spy Jonathan Pollard was particularly interested in stealing U.S. targeting information on its cities. Do they like Russia any more now that it is giving nuclear aid and long range missiles to Iran? Two high profile Israel supporters - professors yet! - have written particularly chilling comments: Martin Van Creveld, a professor of military history at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem stated: "We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. Most European capitals are targets for our air force. Let me quote General Moshe Dayan: ‘Israel must be like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother.’ [...] We have the capability to take the world down with us. And I can assure you that that will happen before Israel goes under." In 2002 the Los Angeles Times published an opinion piece by Louisiana State University professor David Perlmutter in which he wrote: "What would serve the Jew-hating world better in repayment for thousands of years of massacres but a Nuclear Winter. Or invite all those tut-tutting European statesmen and peace activists to join us in the ovens? For the first time in history, a people facing extermination while the world either cackles or looks away--unlike the Armenians, Tibetans, World War II European Jews or Rwandans--have the power to destroy the world. The ultimate justice?"

Het dreigement werd maar al te serieus genomen, want 'the U.S. decided to open an aerial resupply pipeline to Israel, and Israeli aircraft began picking up supplies that day.' Zie: http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/israel/nuke/farr.htm
En over de terreur tegen de Palestijnen een andere academicus: 'This inhuman madness will end only with the end of the violent ideology that spawned it-when those who are committed to the project of creating and maintaining a religiously and ethnically exclusivist state in what has always been a culturally and religiously heterogeneous land finally relent and accept the inevitable: that they have failed. '

Onderstaand opiniestuk staat vandaag in ingekorte vorm in Trouw.

'Israel may face charges for war crimes
Mel Frykberg, The Electronic Intifada,
7 January 2009 RAMALLAH, occupied West Bank (IPS)

- Israel has committed war crimes and should be prosecuted in an international court, says Raji Sourani, head of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) in Gaza."The repeated bombing of clearly marked civilian buildings, where civilians were sheltering, crosses several red lines in regard to international law," Sourani told IPS. Palestinian Authority (PA) delegate to the United Kingdom, Professor Manuel Hassassian, has said the PA will launch legal proceedings against Israeli leaders it says are responsible for war crimes in Gaza, according to a Palestinian news report. Another 22 Palestinians were killed Wednesday morning in bombing and shelling as Israel's Operation Cast Lead entered day 11. The dead included four people killed in the shelling of a children's playground near a mosque in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of Gaza City. Six Israelis were treated for shock as several rockets from Gaza hit Israel. Hassassian's comment came in the wake of Israeli shelling of a UN school in Jabaliya refugee camp Tuesday afternoon which killed more than 40 Palestinians. Several other UN schools in the Gaza Strip were also hit in the last few days, resulting in a number of casualties. The UN called for an investigation, stating that prior to the current operation the Israelis were given the precise coordinates of all UN institutions in Gaza. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has already condemned an Israeli attack on two members of the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) last week. The ICRC said the medics were wearing fluorescent jackets, their ambulances were clearly marked, and their flashing lights were on. Nihal al-Akhras, chairman of the Palestinian Health Care Committees, asked the international community to pressure Israel to stop firing on medical facilities and workers in the Gaza Strip. Akhras's comments followed Tuesday's bombing of the al-Dura hospital in the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City. Three mobile clinics provided by a Danish non-governmental organization, DanChurchAid, were also destroyed. "We've been able to help the wounded and suffering so far because our vehicles have been present and ready inside Gaza. This possibility of emergency aid is now in ruins," said Henrik Stubkjaer, secretary general of DanChurchAid. "We are deeply shocked that the Israeli air strikes directly prevent the humanitarian aid effort," he added. According to DanChurchAid the clinics were clearly marked with red crosses and were parked in the Union of Healthcare headquarters. "One Palestinian doctor and three medics have been killed during Israel's bombing campaign which began on 27 December," Sammy Hassan, spokesman for Gaza's al-Shifa Hospital told IPS. While Israel has denied that it deliberately targets civilians, reading between the lines of reports in the Israeli media and admissions by military leaders would suggest that the lives of Palestinian civilians are secondary to saving Israeli soldiers. Several senior Israeli military officers have admitted that the Israeli army strategy is to use tremendous firepower on the ground to protect Israeli soldiers during fighting in civilian areas, a senior officer explained to journalists on Tuesday.'

US media didn't report Israeli ceasefire violation
Jim Lobe and Ali Gharib, The Electronic Intifada, 8 January 2009

WASHINGTON (IPS) - Consumed by coverage of the 4 November presidential election, US mainstream media ignored a key Israeli military attack on a Hamas target that some Palestinians claim marked the effective end of the ceasefire between the two sides and set the stage for the current round of bloodletting. While the major US news wire Associated Press (AP) reported that the attack, in which six members of Hamas's military wing were killed by Israeli ground forces, threatened the ceasefire, its report was carried by only a handful of small newspapers around the country. The 4 November raid -- and the escalation that followed -- also went unreported by the major US network and cable television new programs, according to a search of the Nexis database for all English-language news coverage between 4 to 7 November. But the military action, which was followed up by an aerial attack that killed at least one other Palestinian, appears to have dealt a fatal blow to the Egyptian-mediated ceasefire that had taken effect 19 June and largely held for some four and a half months. In retaliation for the attack, Hamas launched some 35 Qassam rockets into Israeli territory 5 November which, in turn, provoked Israel to severely tighten its then-17-month-old economic siege of the Palestinian territory."While neither side ever completely respected the ceasefire terms, the Israeli raid was far and away the biggest violation," said Stephen Zunes, an expert on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict at the University of San Francisco."It was a huge, huge provocation, and it now appears to me that it was actually intended to get Hamas to break off the ceasefire," he added. When Israel launched its current military offensive against Hamas-controlled Gaza 27 December, most major US media outlets -- and particularly television and newspaper commentators -- blamed Hamas for breaking the ceasefire by continuing rocket and mortar attacks on Israeli territory and refusing to extend the ceasefire on its current terms beyond its formal 19 December expiration."Israel's air offensive against the Gaza Strip yesterday should not have been a surprise for anyone who has been following the mounting hostilities in the region," said the lead editorial in the Washington Post the day after Israel began its massive air assault, "least of all the Hamas movement, which invited the conflict by ending a six-month-old ceasefire and launching scores of rockets and mortar shells at Israel during the last 10 days."This explanation of events corresponded to a major Israeli public-relations effort that placed top government officials on US network and cable news programs. In an appearance on NBC's widely viewed Sunday morning talk show Meet the Press, as the military offensive got underway, for example, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, also a candidate for prime minister in the 10 February elections, set forth her government's basic narrative."About a half a year ago, according to the Egyptian Initiative, we decided to enter a kind of a truce and not to attack Gaza Strip," Livni said. "Hamas violated, on a daily basis, this truce. They targeted Israel, and we didn't answer."But that narrative omitted any mention of the critical 4 November raid, and no Palestinian guest, such as Mustafa Barghouti, an independent Palestinian lawmaker and human rights activist from Ramallah, appeared on the program to rebut her claim.'

Claiming impartiality, Europe leans towards Israel
David Cronin, The Electronic Intifada, 8 January 2009

BRUSSELS (IPS) - In carefully crafted official statements, diplomats have portrayed the European Union as something of an honest broker in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Yet even though almost all of the people killed over the past fortnight have been Palestinians, some top-ranking leaders in the 27-country bloc have tacitly offered their support for Israel's bombing and invasion of Gaza.Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, the Union's largest country, has stated that Hamas "clearly and exclusively" bore responsibility for the fighting because it had fired Qassam rockets on Israel. The Czech Republic, which took over the EU's rotating presidency 1 January, described Israel's actions in Gaza as "more defensive than offensive." Prague subsequently retracted that remark after it emerged that France, the previous holder of the presidency, had a more nuanced position. But while Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, has spent much of this week seeking to secure a truce between Hamas and Israel, he too has been eager to develop closer political and economic ties with the Israeli government. In December, the EU's foreign ministers decided to plough ahead with plans to develop a "privileged partnership" with Israel, allowing that country to take part in a wide range of the Union's programs and holding out the possibility that Israel could be integrated into its single market. France held the Union's presidency at that time. This decision was taken despite pleas by Salam Fayyad, the appointed Palestinian Authority prime minister in Ramallah, that the Union should avoid upgrading relations with Israel until the latter stopped building new settlements in the occupied territories.Max Wieselmann, campaigner with European Jews for a Just Peace, an organization critical of Israeli policy, urged the EU to make the partnership conditional on respect for human rights. He contrasted how the Union's governments have been willing to turn a blind eye to Israel's denial of elementary rights to the Palestinians with the meticulous attention the bloc has shown to questions of free expression in Turkey, a candidate for EU membership. There is "always a big fuss," he said, if Turkish authorities are found wanting in applying European standards on human rights and democracy. Yet the Union has not taken any robust action against Israel for its economic blockade of Gaza -- in contravention of the 1949 Geneva Convention, which forbids "collective punishment" of a civilian population.Ran Curiel, Israel's ambassador to Brussels, is hoping that the deepening of relations will not be affected by the events in Gaza. Israel has launched its offensive "reluctantly and without a choice," he said, because "our citizens are daily exposed to a sort of game of Russian roulette from the Hamas rockets."The European Parliament could hold off on approving the partnership plan for some time, possibly until after elections to the institution in June. The assembly has been heavily lobbied by supporters of Israel in recent years. A cross-party grouping allied to the European Friends of Israel has been set up within the parliament.Nonetheless, the assembly decided in December to postpone a vote endorsing the partnership, and many of its members have condemned the often indiscriminate nature of Israel's attacks. Francis Wurtz, leader of an alliance of left-wing members of Parliament, argued 7 January that the EU has "made itself an accessory" to Israel's attacks by seeking closer ties with it.'

De Israelische Terreur 601

Gaza massacres (27 December 2008 - )

Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and thousand more injured as Israel continues to assault the 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza -- the majority of them children and refugees -- from the air, sea and sky.
Summary of events -->
Ongoing coverage from The Electronic Intifada
Breaking news from Al-Jazeera

The dead include police officers who were attending a graduation ceremony, school children heading home after a day of study, and other Gazans killed without warning as they were conducting their normal business. The death toll will most likely rise as corpses are recovered from the rubble of destroyed buildings and the critically injured die of their wounds. Many will likely die because Gaza's hospitals -- already chronically short of medicines and supplies due to the Israeli siege -- are unable to cope with the scale of the catastrophe.
In Israel, where the fate of the Gaza Strip has become part of politicking as the country gears up for an election, leaders blamed Hamas for the carnage and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert cynically appealed, "to the people of Gaza, you are not our enemy." While the other three members of the so-called International Quartet for Middle East Peace criticized what they called Israel's "excessive" use of force, the US refrained from doing so. White House spokesperson Gordon Johndroe stated from Texas, where President George W. Bush was presently vacationing: "Hamas' continued rocket attacks into Israel must cease if the violence is to stop."
The day's rising death toll was the highest in the territory since it was occupied by Israel during the 1967 War. Although Israel unilaterally withdrew its illegal settler population from the Gaza Strip in 2005, it remained the occupying power as it controlled the borders, sea and airspace, as well as the population registry, and regularly carried out sonic booms over the area, terrorizing the population. Israeli forces have also frequently carried out extrajudicial executions of Palestinian activists in Gaza, killing scores of bystanders as well.
Gaza hospitals were unable to cope with the situation as Israel's closure of the Gaza Strip for a year and a half has prevented the importing of medical supplies and equipment. As the morgues filled to capacity, corpses lined the hallways of Gaza hospitals. Hospitals were forced to turn away many of the injured due to the lack of space and supplies.
The massive air strikes came after a food crisis broke out in Gaza, as Israel's banning of imports into the Strip have depleted stocks of flour and cooking gas, causing some bakeries -- the few still in operation -- to resort to baking bread made out of animal feed. On 18 December, the United Nations agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) was forced to stop its food aid delivery to 750,000 refugees in the Gaza Strip.
These measures of collective punishment are resulting in "the breakdown of an entire society," according to economist Sara Roy, who asks in a commentary published recently by The London Review of Books, "How can keeping food and medicine from the people of Gaza protect the people of Israel?"
The devastating attack on Gaza was described as "willful killing" by leading Palestinian human rights and civil society organizations, and therefore constitute "a war crime." The organizations stated: "Both the time and location of these attacks also indicate a malicious intent to inflict as many casualties as possible with many of the police stations located in civilian population centers and the time of the attacks coinciding with the end of the school day resulting in the deaths of numerous children."
The assault was met with loud calls for a boycott of Israel, including a boycott appeal from by the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee, which stated on the day of the massacres: "Israel seems intent to mark the end of its 60th year of existence the same way it has established itself -- perpetrating massacres against the Palestinian people. In 1948, the majority of the indigenous Palestinian people were ethnically cleansed from their homes and land, partly through massacres like Deir Yassin; today, the Palestinians in Gaza, most of whom are refugees, do not even have the choice to seek refuge elsewhere. Incarcerated behind ghetto walls and brought to the brink of starvation by the siege, they are easy targets for Israel's indiscriminate bombing."'

'Persbericht
IsraĆ«li’s in Nederland:

Press release

Israelis in the Netherlands:
“We call upon Dutch politicians to raise their voices against the military attacks on Gaza”

We, a group of Israelis living in the Netherlands, call on you to publicly disapprove of the brutal military operation claiming the life of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. We urge you to intervene in this conflict by sending a message to the Israeli government, which denounces the attacks on Gaza, and insists on an immediate ceasefire.

We are following the reports from Gaza with anger, shame and frustration at the inability of the international community to stop the violence. Since the beginning of this operation approximately 700 people, among them more than 200 children were killed. 700.000 Palestinians are living without water and nearly a million without electricity. Israel blocks the delivery of sufficient humanitarian aid, which has resulted in starvation, and a lack of proper medical assistance. We cannot find any justification for such war crimes against civilians.

Israel has a right and duty to defend its citizens. The rockets fired from the Gaza strip are an unacceptable act of violence against civilians in Israel. These must be brought to an end through a real and viable long-term political solution. A massive military operation does not advance such a solution. On the contrary: since the beginning of this operation rockets have been launched on a daily basis, killing 4 civilians and wracking damage as never experienced before. Rockets have now reached populations centres previously never fired on, mere thirty kilometres from Tel Aviv. Violence against violence only brings more violence.

These are very tragic times for us as Israelis. We are dismayed that Israeli politicians abuse the feeling of insecurity of its citizens in order to pursue their own political goals in light of the upcoming elections. With the violent path it has chosen, the Israeli government actively destroys the chances that Israelis and Palestinians could live side by side in peace. Every day of violence makes a just solution to the conflict impossible to imagine.

Out of deep concern for the future of both people we call upon the Dutch government and the chamber of parliament to raise its voice for an immediate ceasefire and a viable truce in order to end this pointless bloodshed.
