Iran targeting of Gulf states can have massive geopolitical impact
By Zein BasraviReporting from Doha
Twenty percent of the world’s energy goes through the Strait of Hormuz, as does much international trade in this region.
The Middle East, especially the Gulf countries, are major centres of economic activity, financial markets, all kinds of investment, and the movement of people.
These are bustling cities with bustling marketplaces, and the majority of the population in much of the GCC are expat workers who come here to live and work.
So it is certainly a major world marketplace that is also currently under attack. I don’t think it is an overstatement to say that what is going to happen now is perhaps a massive shift – economically, geopolitically.
This could be the beginning of major changes in the region. What that looks like, how things are when the guns fall silent – if they do soon enough – is still an open question.
