For the second day in a row, residents of Qaryut village, south of Nablus in the northern West Bank, are living in heightened anxiety after Israeli occupation forces stormed their western lands on Sunday. The forces began uprooting olive and almond trees and bulldozing large areas near homes, threatening residents with eviction to make way for a security fence that will further encroach on their remaining land. This situation raises serious fears of a silent displacement following the tightening of the siege on the village.
The head of the Qaryut village council, Youssef Sadiq, told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed about the collective anguish the village has been experiencing since Sunday morning. Residents awoke to the sound of Israeli bulldozers clearing their way toward their western lands, adjacent to the settlement of Shilo, which is built on village land. The shock was immense, as the occupation forces' bulldozers mercilessly uprooted olive and almond trees, destroying everything in their path. The occupation forces then issued direct threats to the owners of nearby houses, giving them only a short time to remove their belongings from their yards, or the bulldozers would raze the area with everything on it.
The Israeli occupation authorities have gradually and systematically seized more than 75% of Qaryut village's land and transformed it into settlements.
An elderly Palestinian farmer, Umm Majdi, painfully crying over her uprooted olive trees circulated on social media, in which she said: “I wish we had died before we saw them [uprooted]”.
