In October 2019, House Democrats were preparing to impeach Trump and declaring that his pause on a US weapons package to Ukraine was a grave threat to national security.
Amid the frenzy, Stephen F. Cohen (RIP) issued a warning. Rather than pushing to arm Ukraine, Cohen said, Washington should be defending Zelensky against the Ukrainian extremists who were trying to sabotage his peace mandate.
"His life is being threatened by a quasi-fascist movement," Cohen told me. "He can’t go forward with full peace negotiations unless America has his back."
Cohen’s warning was ignored, across the political spectrum. The political and media establishment sided with the fascists. Trump didn’t sell out Zelensky today — the uniparty already did that years ago.
