An investigation indicates that the strike on a girls’ elementary school in the southern Iranian city of Minab on February 28 likely occurred during US attacks targeting a nearby naval base belonging to the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC).
The school was struck on Saturday, February 28, on the first day of the US-Israeli aggression against Iran, when it was packed with pupils during class hours. The strike killed 165 people and left 96 others wounded.
Satellite imagery, verified videos, and social media footage analyzed by investigators show the school was severely damaged at the same time multiple precision strikes hit buildings inside the adjacent IRGC naval facility near the Strait of Hormuz.
Satellite images show coordinated precision strikes
New satellite images indicate that at least six buildings inside the naval base were struck by precision munitions. Four of the structures were destroyed, while two others showed impact points consistent with targeted airstrikes.
The images also show extensive damage to the nearby school building, suggesting it was hit during the same operation.
Security analyst Wes J. Bryant, a former US Air Force official who reviewed the imagery, said the strikes appeared to be “picture-perfect” precision attacks.
Bryant says the most plausible explanation is target misidentification, meaning the school may have been mistakenly struck during the attack on the naval facility.
US conducting operations in area at time of strike
US officials have not confirmed responsibility for the strike but have acknowledged that American forces were conducting operations in southern Iran at the time.
At a briefing, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine said US naval forces were operating along Iran’s southern coast and conducting strikes aimed at degrading Iranian naval capabilities near the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Israeli officials have said they were not aware of operations in the Minab area at that time.
Images from the aftermath show rescuers searching through rubble and excavators digging dozens of graves ahead of mass funerals.
