  Tehran announces military drills near Strait of Hormuz

  Iran issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for air navigation today due to live-fire military activity in the airspace along the Strait of Hormuz, the Anadolu news agency reports.

  The notice said live-fire military activity will be conducted in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz as part of military drills.

  It said military activity will take place between today, January 27, and Thursday, January 29, within a circular area with a radius of 5 nautical miles (9km).

  It added that the airspace in the designated area, from ground level up to 25,000 feet (7,600 metres), will be restricted and hazardous for the duration of the exercises.

  Israel’s Netanyahu threatens forceful response if attacked by Iran

  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose government launched deadly bombings on Iran in June and has been pushing for a wider assault against the country, says Israel will hit back if it is attacked by Iran.

  “If Iran makes the grave mistake of attacking Israel, we will respond with a force that Iran has never seen,” Netanyahu said at a televised news conference.

  Netanyahu’s comments come just days after he held talks in Israel with senior US advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

  Witkoff said “broader regional issues” were discussed in the meeting on Saturday, a likely reference to heightened US-Iran tensions and speculation that Washington and Tel Aviv may still yet attack Tehran as they did during the 12-day war in June.

  Iran, Qatar foreign ministers stress need for diplomacy in call

  Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, have spoken by phone amid the mounting tensions in the region.

  According to a report from Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, the pair “emphasised the need to continue cooperation and expand bilateral relations in all areas of common interest”.

  They also stressed “the need to continue diplomatic efforts to maintain regional stability and reduce tensions”, Tasnim said.

  France reportedly opposed to listing IRGC as ‘terrorist’ group

  Reuters is reporting that France is one of the EU member-states opposed to designating Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as a “terrorist” organisation.

  “France has made it clear that they do not believe it would be useful to list the IRGC for now and want to keep communications open,” an unnamed European diplomat told the news agency.

  The diplomat added that France was also worried that listing the group could harm efforts to bring back two of its citizens currently living at the embassy in Tehran after being released from prison last year.

  Cecile Kohler and her partner, Jacques Paris, were released from Evin prison in northern Tehran in November.
