With Dozens Dead and Rescue Efforts Ongoing, New York City Mayor Says Climate Crisis Is Already Here

After Ida’s remnants swept through the East Coast and left at least 46 people dead across New England and Virginia, New York City’s mayor urged everyone to see the storm as “the biggest wake-up call we could possibly get” that the climate crisis is already here, CNN reports. Of the dozens killed in the East, many died in flooded homes or while overtaken by water in or outside their vehicles.

In the Arctic, Less Sea Ice and More Snow on Land Are Pushing Cold Extremes to Eastern North America

A new study found that global warming is decreasing Arctic sea ice while increasing the extent of land covered by snow in Siberia, causing distortions in the polar vortex, a belt of strong, high altitude winds usually circling the central Arctic. Researchers say its findings show how climate change will make cold snaps, like the one that killed hundreds of people in Texas in February, more common.

Manchin Wants to ‘Pause’ Biden’s $3.5 Trillion Reconciliation Package. Progressives Are Not Happy

Sen. Joe Manchin, the West Virginia moderate Democrat who has expressed grievances with any measures that would phase out fossil fuel use, urged his party on Wednesday to “hit the pause button” on a $3.5 trillion reconciliation package that is central to President Biden’s climate agenda, The Hill reports. The announcement drew harsh criticism from the party’s progressive members.

Hurricane Ida has left nearly 1 million people in Louisiana and Mississippi without power and drinking water and killed dozens in the Northeast. Wildfires have forced tens of thousands to flee their homes in California. And flash floods killed at least 20 people in Tennessee last month. “We’re not prepared” for this new climate, said one former national security official for the Obama administration.

Air Pollution Could Knock 9 Years Off the Life of People in India, Study Says

The air pollution in India is so bad that it could be reducing the life expectancy of hundreds of millions of people living in India by as much as nine years, according to a new study. The report found that air pollution likely reduces the life expectancy of 40 percent of Indians, with all of the country’s 1.3 billion residents facing annual average pollution levels that exceed World Health Organization guidelines.
