NATO official insists Russia is the biggest threat to world peace
The United States should supply Ukraine with the arms it needs to defend itself against Russian-backed separatist forces, including anti-tank Javelin missiles. This is the position of the former NATO supreme allied commander in Europe General Curtis Scaparotti, Reuters reports.
During a speech at the Senate Armed Services Committee, Scaparotti insisted that Russia is the greatest military threat U.S. faces. He says the Kremlin continues to severely challenge the international norms and demonstrates currently increasing aggressive behaviour.
Due to the current circumstances, the former NATO supreme allied commander suggested the U.S. permanent armoured brigade stationed in Europe would be better at deterring the Russian Federation rather the current rotational presence.
Several years ago the United States started reducing its presence in the Central and Eastern Europe due to the big cuts in its defence spending. After Russia's Crimean peninsula occupation U.S. Defence Ministry re-instated the policy of strengthening its positions in the region by deploying armoured brigades in Europe. A regular U.S. army unit consists of nearly 4, 500 soldiers.
