VIDEO: Sen. Bernie Sanders: ‘We Need a Political Revolution in This Country’

On Sunday’s edition of “This Week With George Stephanopoulos,” the ABC host might have thought he was point-blanking newly minted presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders with some blunt questions, but Sanders hit harder with his answers.
Take Stephanopoulos’ opening salvo, for example: “Why are you the best choice for president of the United States?” Good enough—a serviceable starting point for a 2016 contender, if a tad obvious.
And of course, Sanders was ready for that one: “Because for the last 30 years I’ve been standing up for the working families of this country, and I think I’m the only candidate who’s prepared to take on the billionaire class, which now controls our economy and increasingly controls the political life of this country,” he said.
Here’s where things started getting interesting: “We need a political revolution in this country involving millions of people who are prepared to stand up and say enough is enough, and I want to help lead that effort,” Sanders added.
His take on White House rival Hillary Clinton sounded a little more like obligatory political-speak and wasn’t quite so interesting, but for the record, he essentially called her an establishment player. “Maybe it’s time for a real political shakeup in this country and to go beyond establishment politics,” he told establishment player and former (Bill) Clinton wheeler-dealer Stephanopoulos.

And if Stephanopoulos thought he might throw Sanders with his next one—“Is it really possible for someone who calls himself a socialist to be elected president of the United States?”—the senator remained firmly planted as he responded. Pointing to Scandinavia as an example of countries in which democratic socialism functions well for a sizable swath of the population, Sanders trotted out a series of reasons why “in those countries, by and large, government works for ordinary people in the middle class rather than—as is the case right now in our country—for the billionaire class.”
“I can hear the Republican attack ad right now: ‘He wants America to look more like Scandinavia,’” mused Stephanopoulos, ever the campaign strategist, but Sanders again pulled no punches. “That’s right. That’s right. And what’s wrong with that?”
