'Iran drops dollar from oil deals: report

TEHRAN (AFP) — Major crude producer Iran has completely stopped carrying out its oil transactions in dollars, Oil Minister Gholam Hossein Nozari said on Saturday, labelling the greenback an "unreliable" currency.
"At the moment, selling oil in dollars has been completely halted, in line with the policy of selling crude in non-dollar currencies," Nozari was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency.
"The dollar is an unreliable currency, considering its devaluation and the oil exporters' losses," he added.
The world's fourth largest oil exporter, Iran has massively reduced its dependence on the dollar over the past year in the face of US pressures on its financial system and the fall in the dollar.
Nozari did not specify in which currencies Iran was now being paid. In the past, officials have said most oil income was in euros, with a significant percentage in yen.
Japan, which purchases 20 percent of Iran's crude oil, has recently agreed to pay for the crude oil in yen, officials have said. The UAE dirham has also been mooted as a possible payment currency.
Iran has in the past months been whittling down the proportion of dollars in its oil revenue income. Officials in October said that dollars accounted for only 15 percent of payments and predicted the amount would fall to zero.
However, the oil income is still being booked in dollars.
The United States has in recent months successfully encouraged major European and Asian banks to cut their dealings with Iran in a bid to make the Islamic republic give way on its controversial nuclear programme.
Washington has also blacklisted major Iranian banks for alleged support of terrorism and seeking nuclear weapons, charges denied by Tehran.'

'Civil rights group: Israel has reached new heights of racism

Racism against Israel's Arab citizens has dramatically increased in the past year, including a 26 percent rise in anti-Arab incidents, according to the Association for Civil Rights in Israel's annual report. Author Sami Michael, the association's president, said upon the release of the report that racism was so rife it was damaging civil liberty in Israel

"Israeli society is reaching new heights of racism that damages freedom of expression and privacy," Michael said. The publication coincides with Human Rights Week, which begins Sunday. "We are a society under supervision under a democratic regime whose institutions are being undermined and which confers a different status to residents in the center of the country and in the periphery," Michael said. The number of Jews expressing feelings of hatred toward Arabs has doubled, the report stated. According to the June 2007 Democracy Index of the Israel Democracy Institute, for example, only half the public believes that Jews and Arabs must have full equal rights. Among Jewish respondents, 55 percent support the idea that the state should encourage Arab emigration from Israel and 78 percent oppose the inclusion of Arab political parties in the government. According to a Haifa University study, 74 percent of Jewish youths in Israel think that Arabs are "unclean."'

'Ondanks rapport: koers van Witte Huis op Iran ongewijzigd

Het verschijnen van de National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) eerder deze maand brengt een groot conflict binnen de Amerikaanse elite aan de oppervlakte. Het neoconservatieve deel van deze elite wordt in het nauw gedreven door de rest van het establishment. Deze tegenstanders willen geen oorlog met Iran en zijn verantwoordelijk voor de NIE. Echter, de ideologie van de neocons is onaangetast èn maken zij nog steeds de dienst uit. De tegenstand zal de verbetenheid van deze groep alleen maar groter maken. Daardoor kan het zijn dat het rapport de kans op escalatie verhoogt en tegelijkertijd het gevolg, een oorlog met Iran, nog steeds een zeer reële mogelijkheid is.
Het rapport van de Iraq Study Group van voormalig buitenlandminister James Baker was een jaar geleden het eerste grote teken aan de wand, gevolgd door het getuigenis van voormalig veiligheidsadviseur Zbigniew Brzezinski voor de Senaatscommissie Buitenlandse Zaken in februari van dit jaar. Brzezinski en Baker zijn niet de enigen die kritiek laten horen op het neoconservatieve beleid. De gebeurtenissen in Irak hebben velen de ogen geopend en gaven de ruimte aan kritische denkers die zonder 'Irak' simpelweg als onpatriottistisch zouden zijn weg gezet. Admiraal William Fallon, de allerhoogste baas van Centcom, het commandocentrum dat de militaire leiding heeft tijdens een oorlog, zou zich bijvoorbeeld privé in niet mis te verstane woorden hebben uitgedrukt tegen oorlog met Iran. Bronnen van The Sunday Times uit kringen van de Britse geheime diensten en defensie melden in februari dat zo'n vier à vijf Amerikaanse generaals en admiraals bereid zijn ontslag te nemen mocht worden besloten Iran aan te vallen. De krant schrijft dat defensieminister Robert Gates meermalen heeft gewaarschuwd tegen een militaire confrontatie met Iran en dat wordt aangenomen dat hij de mening vertegenwoordigt van zijn hoogste commandanten. De onderliggende inzet bij de strijd tegen de hardliners in het Witte Huis lijkt te zijn dat er naast de imagoschade van de VS, de mislukking van de oorlog tegen Irak, de schuldenpositie van de VS en de torenhoge olieprijs, niet nog een, wellicht veel groter, probleem bij kan. Het eind van de periode Bush is in zicht en het establishment ziet uit naar aan een koerswijziging. Iran-expert Ray Takeyh, Senior Fellow voor Midden-Oostenstudies bij de Council on Foreign Relations verwoordt het aldus (MP3, 36'02): 'The NIE is an interesting part of a larger narrative; namely, how the formal institutions of government are now determined to resist the White House, which wasn't the case in 2002. The head of the intelligence organization, McConnell, basically undermined the president's attempt to have a military option. It's inconceivable that the United States of America can attack a country whose intelligence services say does not have a weapons program. Second of all, the military uniformed services also will be in a position of resisting, as Admiral Fallon and others have said. In many ways, this narrative suggests the irrelevance of the Bush White House, the irrelevance of the president himself. This is not like it was -- these institutions are trying to tell the White House it isn't like 2002, when they were just going to roll over and accept the White House's judgments and the White House's exaggerations. I mean, this is not George Tenet anymore.'

Ik liep vanmiddag door een bos in Drenthe. Dansende bomen. Ze zwegen, maar in samenhang. Close Harmony. Die twee links zag ik uit de hoek van mijn ogen een modern ballet opvoeren, maar op het moment dat ik mijn blik op hen richtte bevroren ze en bloosden. Zonder samenhang geen samenleving. Elke boom is weer afhankelijk van de ander. En ze weten dat al honderden miljoenen jaren. Als u goed kijkt, ziet u het ook.

'Pentagon Plans Unchanged by Iran Report: General

WASHINGTON - A U.S. intelligence assessment that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003 has had no effect on Pentagon planning, a senior U.S. military officer said on Friday.
Marine Corps Lt. Gen. John Sattler, director for strategic plans and policy on the U.S. military’s Joint Staff, said officials were still digesting the National Intelligence Estimate released on Monday.
Sattler told reporters at the Pentagon he would not talk publicly about any U.S. military contingency plans but he said: “There has been no course correction, slowdown, speedup given to us inside the Joint Staff based on the NIE.”

The Bush administration has insisted that it wants to resolve its dispute with Tehran over Iran’s nuclear program through diplomacy but will not rule out military action.
Analysts have said the intelligence estimate, which reversed previous assessments, makes it much less likely that the United States would attack Iran.
Following the release of the estimate, President George W. Bush said Iran remained dangerous and would be dangerous in the future if it had the knowledge to make a nuclear weapon. Iran say its nuclear program is purely for energy generation.
In Kansas City on Friday, Vice President Dick Cheney restated the administration’s stance on Iran.
“We’re dealing with a country that is still enriching uranium and remains a leading state sponsor of terrorism. That is a cause of great concern to the United States,” he said.
“Not everyone understands the threat of nuclear proliferation in Iran or elsewhere but we and our allies do understand the threat and we have a duty to prevent it,” Cheney said in remarks delivered at the National World War I Museum.'

Rationalisme zonder Rede

Tijdens een diner gisteravond sprak ik met enkele kennissen van me, allen tegen of boven de zestig. Ik vertelde dat die ochtend op de voorpagina van Trouw het volgende stond: 'Oudere jaagt erfenis er zelf doorheen. De moderne 50- en 60-plussers genieten vooral zelf van hun vermogen. Sparen, geld behouden en doorgeven aan kinderen is er niet bij. De nieuwe generatie ouderen (50-65 jarigen) gaat massaal haar vermogen zelf opsnoepen in plaats van het door te geven aan de kinderen. Het gaat daarbij om vele miljarden euro's. Nederland loopt daarmee, met de Duitsers, voorop in de wereld.'

Ik had dit bericht beter niet ter sprake kunnen brengen, want het was alsof ik een bom in het gezelschap had geworpen. Bijna iedereen begon zich te veronschuldigen. Ze hadden goed voor hun kinderen gezorgd en trouwens deden dat nog steeds en vandaar dat zij de rest opmaakten, bovendien laat je altijd nog een huis achter en trouwens de kinderen vonden het goed dat hun ouders alles opsoupeerden. Kortom, Trouw zat er fors naast. Ik probeerde nog te zeggen dat er wel degelijk sprake is van een breuk in onze cultuur, aangezien vroeger de continuiteit het belangrijkst was geweest, de overleving van de soort, daar was het hele leven op gericht, en dat geldt nog steeds in de Derde Wereld. Zodra die drijfveer vervalt dan vervalt een belangrijke pilaar onder het oude culturele bouwwerk. Als de ouderen alleen hun eigen hedonisme najagen, dan doen hun kinderen dat ook en fragmenteert de samenleving. Een samenleving bestaat bij de gratie van afhankelijkheid van elkaar, nietwaar. Afhankelijkheid is het cement dat samenvoegt. Die fragmentatie is ook precies wat we nu zien, ieder voor zich en god voor ons allen. Waarom zouden kinderen voor hun ouders zorgen zodra die hulpbehoevend zijn? Die kinderen zijn immers veel te druk met hun eigen leven, verlangens, eisen, hedonisme, etc! Het mag voor ouderen dan wel zo zijn dat 'doorgeven aan kinderen er niet bij is,' maar wat wij wel doorgeven aan de volgende generatie is de geweldige milieuvernietiging, de klimaatverandering, de uitputting van vitale grondstoffen, een tot de tanden toe bewapende wereld, een gigantische en nog steeds groeiende kloof tussen arm en rijk. Dat geven we wel door, mede doordat we onze 'erfenis er zelf doorheen' jagen, onder andere met reizen naar de exotische plaatsen op de wereld, waar we vertederd naar Derde Wereld kinderen kijken, die nog zo natuurlijk zijn en spelen en altijd lachen. Zodra cement ontbreekt, is iedereen onafhankelijk en is niemand meer verantwoordelijk. Ik ken iemand die ooit zei dat hij wist dat er sprake was van ingrijpende gevolgen door de luchtverontreiniging, maar dat hij pas uit zijn auto zou stappen als anderen dat ook deden. Zijn kinderen en kleinkinderen speelden geen enkele rol in zijn overwegingen. De overleving van de soort, in wezen een instinct, is bij mijn generatie potverteerders volkomen verdwenen. En als je het ter sprake probeert te brengen, zijn ze geenszins bereid om kritisch naar zichzelf te kijken. In de jaren zestig schreef de Amerikaanse socioloog C. Wright Mills over rationalisme zonder rede, de stoornis waaraan de westerse consumptiemaatschappij leed. Mills is inmiddels dood, maar wat een gelijk heeft die man gekregen. Rationalisme zonder rede.

'Wall Street's Bad Boys and Their Washington Enablers

Imagine you moved in next door to a mischievous child. Over the years, you watched the parents scold ever so lightly as the deviant behavior grew from stealing loose change to petty larceny to bank robbery. You knew for sure the child would eventually get caught and end up in prison; but you didn't count on one thing: the parents used their political clout with each ratcheting up of the crimes to avoid prosecution, effectively turning the overseers of the public interest into criminal enablers. As the enablers "fixed" the outcome of each crime, they also sealed the records from public view and historical perspective.
That scenario typifies how criminal behavior has exploded on Wall Street and why President Bush, Congress and the regulators are stumbling around in the dark looking for cures for a financial crisis that they can neither understand nor contain: they're enablers in denial.Nothing more dramatically illustrates the criminal contagion than the fact that for the second time in 13 years, Orange County, California has found Wall Street toxic sludge threatening its public funds.
Here's what happened the first time around: a Merrill Lynch stockbroker, Michael Stamenson, sold billions of dollars of complex securities to Orange County, which ran a pooled investment fund for close to 200 cities and school districts in the county. The county lost $1.7 billion when the highly leveraged fund imploded, the county filed bankruptcy, resulting in serious job losses and cutbacks in social services to the poor. In all, Merrill made approximately $100 million in fees with Stamenson collecting $4.3 million in just the two-year period of '93 and '94.
Stamenson was immortalized in evidence produced in court as the star of a Merrill Lynch training tape for rookie brokers where he maps out the road to success on Wall Street: '' the tenacity of a rattlesnake, the heart of a black widow spider and the hide of an alligator.''
As the evidence against Stamenson and higher ups at Merrill played out in court, Merrill Lynch continued to pay annual compensation of $750,000 to Stamenson and eventually settled the case for $400 million and sealed the documents. It also paid $30 million to the county to settle and abruptly end a grand jury investigation, leading to loud cries of foul play. Once again, the documents and testimony were sealed from public view. This is what consistently happens on settlement when a customer or employee attempts to sue a Wall Street firm and is ushered instead into a Wall Street Star Chamber called mandatory arbitration.'
