Zeer geachte lezer,
Hebt u wel eens een heel klein beetje medelijden met me? Daar is wel reden toe. Ik behoor namelijk tot een onderdrukte minderheid, die nauwelijks serieus genomen wordt. Da’s niet zo mooi. In Nederland hebben we het immers zo goed voor met geplaagde minderheden? U mag gerust weten: Ik heb het best wel een beetje moeilijk. Want met steeds komt die indringende vraag: Of ik nog steeds voor de Irak-oorlog ben?
De vragensteller kan soms een glimlachje (of is het een grimlachje?) niet onderdrukken. “Die Charles toch! Die heeft toch lelijk mis gegokt met zijn steun aan de krankjoreme oorlog van die malle Bush. Tsjonge, wat zal ‘ie' een spijt hebben."
Treurnis en leedDan volgt altijd een discussie over de Abu Graib gevangenis. Of over de gevangenen van Guantanamo Bay en natuurlijk over het aanhoudende geweld in Irak. Ik ben het tot zover doorgaans met de critici eens. De Amerikanen maakten en maken nog steeds vreselijke fouten. Mijn hart keert zich om als ik lees over mariniers die onlangs kennelijk onschuldige Irakezen vermoordden. Wat een gruwel.
En dan komt onvermijdelijk dus de vraag of ik nog voor de oorlog ben. Het antwoord luidt volmondig: Ja, daarin ben ik niet van mening veranderd. Vooral omdat het alternatief – weggaan uit Irak – zo veel slechter is. Dan laat je de miljoenen Irakezen in de steek die drie keer met gevaar voor eigen leven naar de stembus kwamen. Dan lever je grote delen van Irak waar het nu rustig en vreedzaam is (bijvoorbeeld bij de Koerden) over aan de wilde bendes van Al Qaida. Je zwicht voor terreur.
Plechtig en hoogdravendIk rijd af en toe in Amstedam langs het monument op het Weteringcircuit. Daarop staat: “Een volk dat voor tirannen zwicht zal meer dan lijf en goed verliezen. Dan dooft het licht.” Dat slaat op ons verzet destijds tegen de Duitse bezetter. Een oproep dus om te blijven hopen. En vechten.
De les van toen geldt nog: “Geef nooit op als je voor een goede zaak strijdt.” De Irakezen en met hen de Amerikanen vechten nu (net als wij destijds tegen de Duitsers) voor een goede zaak: vrijheid en democratie.
De wanhoop van vandaag mag de hoop van morgen niet verstikken. Ja, ik weet ’t, dat klinkt een beetje plechtig en hoogdravend. Maar ik meen het echt. De toekomst van uw en mijn kinderen staat mede op spel.
Ik moet zo vaak denken aan die uitspraak van president Roosevelt: “I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made”. Natuurlijk zijn vrienden belangrijk. Maar in echte conflicten is minstens zo belangrijk wie je als vijand kiest.
Roosevelt vraagt ons in feite: Heb je wel de juiste vijand gekozen? In Irak-discussies duikt vaak George Bush op als de grote satan, de ultieme slechterik. Is hij echt onze grootste vijand? En niet de gewapende schoften die dag in dag uit burgers vermoorden? Of de zelfmoordcommando’s die onschuldige kiezers bedreigen? De terroristen die Irak liefst helemaal kapot maken? Nee, Bush is de grootste schurk? Gekkigheid natuurlijk.
De situatie in Irak lijkt soms zo uitzichtloos. Te veel geweld, te veel bloed, te veel verdriet. Maar weet dat burgeroorlogen voorbij gaan. Met bijna alle landen waar in de afgelopen 100 jaar soms hopeloos lijkende burgeroorlogen woedden gaat het nu veel beter. Ik pak er een lijstje bij: Algerije, Finland (echt waar, in 1918), El Salvador, Griekenland, Ierland, Indonesie, Korea, Libanon, Liberia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Paraguay, Rusland (na de 1917 revolutie), Spanje en Vietnam.
20.000 doden!
Nog even terug naar Franklin Roosevelt, beste lezer. Ik moet vaak aan hem denken. Aan de gruwelijke veldslagen die hij uitvocht. Bijvoorbeeld in 1944/1945 toen de opmars van de Amerikanen in de Ardennen stokte. Nederland moest tot 1945 wachten op de bevrijding van de Duitse bezetter.
Enig idee hoeveel Amerikanen bij die veldslag – the Battle of the Bulge - omkwamen? Tegen de 20.000! Bijna tien keer zo veel als nu in de Irak-oorlog. Maar Roosevelt zette door. En gelukig maar.
We roemen hem omdat hij dapper was toen hij zijn vrienden koos. En zijn vijanden.

Een commentaartje? Ik begin er niet eens aan. Zou Charles Groenhuijsen al die jaren geen enkel achtergrondverhaal of boek over dit onderwerp hebben gelezen? Zou hij echt zo naief, beter nog, zo onnozel zijn? Kennelijk! Let vooral ook op de onderstreept woorden. Als een scholier heeft hij zijn hele betoogje bij elkaar gegoogled. Wat mij opviel aan de reacties op zijn column is dat onder andere dankzij internet veel meer mensen goed geinformeerd zijn geraakt, beter geinformeerd dan bijvoorbeeld onze Charles en sommige andere collega's van me. Dat is een toenemend probleem voor de massamedia. Vroeger was men volledig afhankelijk van journalisten voor nieuws. Die tijd is godzijdank voorbij. Mensen als Groenhuijsen hebben dat nog niet door. Het maffe is dat zo'n journalist hetzelfde medium gebruikt dat tegelijkertijd haarscherp aantoont hoe slechts hij geinformeerd is. Ook dat heeft Charles nog niet door.

Martin Bril

Stel dat een Volkskrant columnist een stukje schrijft dat zo begint: 'Over niet al te lange tijd zal de meerderheid van de Amsterdamse bevolking uit joden bestaan. Ik geloof dat je het zo bot niet mag zeggen, maar het is natuurlijk wel zo. Het is een toekomst waar ik me niet op verheug, dat is de bange conservatief in mij. Alleen voor de bagel maak ik een uitzondering. Dat was er vroeger niet, en nu wel, dankzij al die joden.' En zo eindigt: 'Ja, het gaat helemaal de goede kant op met Amsterdam. We kunnen ons op een gruwelijke toekomst verheugen.' Stel dat hij dit had geschreven dan zou hij van de ene op de andere dag de laan uit zijn gestuurd. Sterker nog: het zou niet geplaatst zijn. En terecht. Antisemitisme en racisme is in Nederland verboden. En daarvan is sprake wanneer iemand een hele bevolkingsgroep veroordeelt aan de hand van de daden van enkelingen. Bijvoorbeeld de nazi-propaganda die stelde dat joden niet deugden want ze waren allemaal geslepen kapitalisten of opruiende communisten. Stel nu dat je een ander semitisch volk neemt, arabieren bijvoorbeeld. Mag dat wel? Of berbers? Dat kan wel. Althans de Volkskrant drukt het af, want deze eerste en laatste zin schreef de columnist Martin Bril afgelopen vrijdag in zijn krant over wat hij noemt 'Marokkanen.' Ik heb niet de indruk dat er een explosie van woede in Nederland is ontstaan na het publiceren van dit racistisch stukje van Bril. Wel staat er vandaag in de Volkskrant een gepaste reactie van de auteur Herman Franke die stelt dat Martin Bril met zijn column 'een xenofobe hetze van de grofste soort' voert. Bril's stukje is weer zo'n schoolvoorbeeld van het eng Nederlands provincialisme, dat sinds het verschijnsel Fortuijn aan kracht leek te winnen en zich ook manifesteert onder een bepaald deel van de blanke, redelijk goed opgeleide middenklasse, die zich kennelijk bedreigd voelt. Surrounded by gunfire in Kabul, the Truthout correspondent describes what makes a spark become a raging riot.
Kabul, Afghanistan - Today in Kabul the veneer of national progress was ripped off, leaving several Afghanis dead and many more wounded and sending this capital city into a lockdown. Four and a half years after the US-led military offensive successfully overthrew the Taliban government, which was protecting Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda, Kabul has erupted in gunfire, leaving citizens shattered and their confidence in the future shaken.
Sequestered behind the tall walls of the Le Monde Guesthouse in central Kabul, from early morning to middle afternoon - for more than five hours - I have been surrounded by the sound of gunfire, AK-47 rifles and hand guns, automatic weapons, and a few heavy explosions, probably rocket-propelled grenades. And sequestered is where I must remain, since in Kabul today foreigners - especially Americans - are not free to walk the streets.
What sparked the violence that has left 6 dead and more than 60 wounded was a vehicular accident on the outskirts of Kabul. Here are the facts, as I know them at this time: A US military convoy was traveling in the northern part of city, and at approximately 9 a.m. one of its vehicles slammed into a line of cars - some reports say as many as 12 cars - which resulted in an Afghani fatality. A large crowd quickly surrounded the military convoy and began throwing stones at the US soldiers. The troops attempted to flee by driving away, and injured several more Afghanis in the process. The police arrived, gunshots were fired, it's unclear by whom, and Afghanis lay dead on the road.
Approximately an hour later, the sound of gunfire could be heard in the city center, where I am located. At first there were only a few shots, which I mistook to be the pounding of hammers. But the pattern and the sharpness of the sounds soon alerted me that it was gunfire. Soon it was almost constant.
Two hours later, this was around 1 p.m., I heard a large crowd of demonstrators outside our compound walls chanting "Down with America." Nearby, black smoke billowed into the light blue sky. The gunfire became more intense, and then, evidently, the protesters quickly dispersed.
The Afghani media reported that protesters had blocked several major streets, and there were gun battles between Afghani army troops and police and the protesters. What I was hearing certainly sounded like gun battles in the streets.
I was informed by a French banker several blocks away that demonstrators were throwing large stones through his bank windows. Many were also whirling large sticks. Shops on his street were being looted, and some protesters were clearly armed with pistols and rifles.' Lees verder:

People who are concerned about the state of the US news media in 2006 might pause to consider those who have lost their lives in the midst of journalistic neglect, avoidance and bias.
We remember that while TV and radio news reports tell the latest about corporate fortunes, vast numbers of real people are struggling to make ends meet - and many are in a position of choosing between such necessities as medicine, adequate food and paying the rent.
We remember that many Americans have lost their limbs or their lives in on-the-job accidents that might have been prevented if overall media coverage had been anywhere near as transfixed with job safety as with, say, marital splits among Hollywood celebrities.
We remember that the national and deadly problem of widespread obesity is in part attributable to constant advertising for products with empty calories and plenty of fat.
We remember that despite public claims by tobacco companies, the ads that keep trying to glamorize smoking continue to lure millions of young people onto a long journey of addiction to cancer-causing cigarettes.
We remember that superficial news reports and commentaries, routinely describing war in flat phony antiseptic terms, are helpful to the US war efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq - where the deaths of American troops, while horrific, are small in number compared to the civilian deaths as a result of daily slaughter catalyzed by US military activities.
We remember that each war death takes a precious life, and media outlets rarely convey more than surface accounts of the actual grief of loved ones left behind.
We remember that massive amounts of front-page space and unchallenged air time on television and radio are used by the president and other top administration officials, who speak glibly about patriotism and sacrifice while their long records of deception continue to underlie insistence that sacrificed lives must be honored by sacrificing more lives.
We remember that lies from the White House, widely parroted and commonly touted as credible by news media, have preceded every major US military action in the last five decades, including invasions of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Panama, Afghanistan and Iraq... (He had help: author and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Weisel reportedly drafted large sections of the speech.) Just as Orwell’s totalitarian propagandists proclaimed WAR IS PEACE and Israeli government signs placed at the Wall (sorry, fence) at the entrance to Bethlehem greet Palestinians with the blessing PEACE BE UNTO YOU, so Olmert declared in Washington: UNILATERAL REALIGNMENT IS PEACE.Because of Olmert’s use of Orwellian language (can anyone, including President Bush or members of Congress, explain to us what “convergence” and “realignment” mean?), we must listen carefully to what is said, what is not said and what is meant.What was said sounds fine if taken at face value. Olmert, extending “my hand in peace to Mahmoud Abbas, the elected president of the Palestinian Authority,” declared Israel’s willingness to negotiate with him on condition that the Palestinians “renounce terrorism, dismantle the terrorist infrastructure, accept previous agreements and commitments, and recognize the right of Israel to exist.” If they do so, Olmert held out Israel’s commitment to a two-state solution.What wasn’t said? While reference to a Palestinian state sounds forthcoming, two key elements set down in the Road Map defining that state were missing: an end to the Israeli Occupation and the establishment of a viable Palestinian state. “A settlement,” says the text of the Road Map to which Olmert and Bush constantly declare their allegiance, “will result in the emergence of an independent, democratic, and viable Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with Israel. The settlement will…end the occupation that began in 1967.”Olmert’s “convergence plan” (now renamed a “realignment plan” because it sounds better in [Newspeak] English), based on the massive “facts on the ground” Israel continues to impose unilaterally with overt American support, cannot possibly give rise to a viable Palestinian state. De Electronic Intifada bericht: 'Crushed by Gate of Occupation'. The newly released Amnesty International 2006 Report provides a glimpse of the world’s human rights record. The reality is shocking. The report starts with a rather blunt finding:“During 2005 some of the world’s most powerful governments were successfully challenged, their hypocrisy exposed by the media, their arguments rejected by courts of law, their repressive tactics resisted by human rights activists.”“Nevertheless, the lives of millions of people worldwide were devastated by the denial of fundamental rights.”The report documents human rights abuses by country; Israel/Occupied Territories and Palestinian Authority are listed as two distinct categories. The classification is slightly confusing, given that the bulk of abuses listed under Israel relate to Palestinians under occupation and the abuses within Israel proper, are only mentioned in passing or are missing all together. An analysis of the structure of the report and issues chosen to document is worthy of an article of its own. Instead, here, I wish to bring to life one of the examples that may, or may not, show up in the Amnesty International 2007 report. It is the example of a three-year-old Palestinian girl whose skull was crushed at an Israeli checkpoint in the West Bank. The death of this child, Rafida Bader, barely got noticed in the Palestinian press, let alone the Israeli and international media.After seeing a brief mention of this tragic story online, at maannews.net, I posted the story with a portrait of the beautiful red-head girl to my mailing list, epalestine.com. Within minutes, an Israeli virtual friend who works with Israeli human rights organizations, passed the post to two Israeli activists mailing lists, New Profile: Movement for the Civil-ization of Israel Society and Machsom (Hebrew for Checkpoint) Watch. Several questions came back, all wanting more details in order to take action. De Electronic Intifada bericht: 'On Wednesday afternoon, 23-year-old Sama was stepping out of a taxi in Ramallah's bustling Manara Circle, when machine gun fire erupted. An undercover Israeli Defense Force (IDF) kidnapping mission, aimed at a senior Islamic Jihad figure, had run amok. Sama took cover in a side-street as the events unfolded. It started with youths hurling stones at the IDF agents -- they were disguised as locals -- and setting their car ablaze. Within minutes, about 11 armored IDF jeeps arrived, surrounding the Lo'Lo'A building on Manara, where the agents supposedly were. Two IDF helicopters came on the scene to provide further backup as the IDF made its violent withdrawal. Israeli military sources insisted that only rubber bullets were used in the skirmish, but the destruction in their wake told another story. A total of four Palestinians died -- Milad Abdullah 'abu El A'raays, Khaled Ja'far Yassin, 'Aysar Qasem Abu E'rra and Ghaleb Rabah Abed El Qader, all in their early twenties -- along with some 57 casualties. Fawzi Salameh, a doctor and manager of El Sheikh Zayed Hospital, reported receiving 32 bullet-wound victims, one of whom had a bullet lodged in his liver.
