The Splendid Failure of Occupation
Last Updated: Jan 4th, 2007 - 01:08:31
Part 45: How the U.S. engineered the Iraqi holocaust
By B. J. Sabri
Online Journal Contributing Writer

“Our dark days -- already pitch-black with murder and lies and hatred and
fear -- are about to grow even darker”—Chris Floyd, columnist, Moscow
Times [from Blood fruit: the blowback harvest begins]

Did the United States, under the pretext of “liberating” Kuwait from
the Iraqi occupation, engineer and execute an Iraqi holocaust to implement,
consolidate, and entrench American imperialism in Iraq, and the Middle
East?

By judging from the scale of destruction and death the United States
inflicted on Iraq, and by considering the international and regional
objectives of war, history of U.S. involvement in the Middle East since the
1930s, control of oil, Israel, U.S.-Israel relations, the answer is yes.

Even so, to back up the charge that the United States committed a holocaust
in Iraq, an investigation on the meaning of the term: holocaust is
indispensable.

As a first step, to qualify the human destruction in Iraq consequent to the
Gulf War as a holocaust, we have to dispense at once with all preposterous
differentiations that American imperialism assigns to the use of the term
or to any other taxonomic categories of mass violence. Second, to debunk
completely the imperialist practice that restricts the application of the
holocaust concept to specific events but not to others, a discussion on the
use of language and derived political vocabulary is in order.

In language, synonyms do not change the basic meaning of a word. Take for
example, the words, kill, slay, destroy, slaughter, or exterminate. They
all mean the same: take life. Yet, the one subtlety that distinguishes each
term is the imagery associated with the given taxonomy.

What these terms would not tell is the magnitude of those who died.
Accepted contemporary definitions resolved this problem by adding either
the qualifier: mass (as in mass destruction) to indicate lethal violence
against large groups, peoples, or nations; by inventing names based on
Roman derivation such as genocide; or by reviving the ancient Hellenic
term: holocaust.

Before the first Iraqi holocaust (1991), there were many other large-scale
holocausts committed by marauding, colonialist, and imperialist polities.
Among these were Mongolian hordes in Asia and Eastern Europe; European and
American colonialism in the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and
Africa; Ottomans against Armenians; Germans against Jehovah witnesses,
Jews, Romanies, communists, etc.; Japanese against Chinese and Koreans;
Israelis against Palestinians; and the United States against Koreans,
Vietnamese, and Panamanians.

A holocaust, as an expression of humanity gone dastardly and violently
bestial, should have neither trophy nor primacy over other despicable
events of mass violence. Still, the Iraqi holocaust is prominent among all
other holocausts for one distinguishing feature: the United States planned
for it with the acquiescence of other colonialist powers of the U.N.
Security Council, and with financing from Japan, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and
other American vassals.'

Israel Needs its Usual Friends to Help Again

Daily Star Editorial

Israel needs help again. It needs reasonable people who share the faith of most of Israel's citizens to rescue them - and their Arab neighbors - from a degenerate political class that is leading all of us to disaster. Specifically, it is moderate Jewish Americans who can be the most helpful by taking back control of the so-called "Israel lobby" from the zealots who have made it the swamp of militaristic racism that it is. http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001-RS8zyqWYRp2MACZN2BXDhw6ikqhy9t_SK6xJzzDrwgFHRcZwI4uBJcxyL-pM98o4yXugjWCOseDd4fyAB7I8aconcU8-KH8gTG0MRBw36m-SKoDkkWEWDv0BPKQ3-SOpK15vxWsznNyK1ZA6J9Pac1seoOnBU4H

11 Killed As Israel Bombs Mosque In Gaza

By Al Jazeera

January 03, 2009 "Al Jazeera" -- -At least 11 Palestinians, including one child, have been killed after Israeli forces struck a mosque during prayers in the town of Beit Lahiya, north of Jabaliya in the Gaza Strip.

More than 200 people were inside the the Ibrahim al-Maqadna mosque praying when it was struck.

It is not clear yet whether the mosque was hit as part of the Israeli army's shelling, which started on Saturday afternoon.

At least 50 people were wounded, Hamas and medical officials said.

The Israeli military has destroyed several mosques during its week-long offensive in Gaza, saying Hamas uses the houses of worship to store weapons.

Ayman Mohyeldin, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Gaza, said: "As much as Israel wants to be surgical in its strikes at the end of the day it is civilians that are being hit. This is proof that civilians are caught up in these attacks."

Mohyeldin said doctors in the Gaza Strip were being overwhelmed by the number of casualties being brought in as a result of the Israeli offensive and that hospitals were near a state of collapse due to a lack of medicines and blood. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article21628.htm

Operation Cast Lead: three boys killed whilst they sleep

As of 3 January 2009, reports indicate that around 421 Palestinians are now dead and more than 2,000 injured since the start of ‘Operation Cast Lead’ eight days ago. The Gaza based organisation Al-Mezan, is reporting that 59 children are among those killed. DCI-Palestine is in the process of confirming this figure.

At around 11:30pm, on Sunday, 28 December 2008, Ziad Al-Absi heard the sound of a helicopter hovering above the family home near the Al-Huda Mosque, in the Yebna refugee camp, Rafah, in southern Gaza. Fearing that the asbestos roofed house would provide little protection in the event of an explosion, Ziad moved his family to a neighbour’s house. Once the sound of the helicopter was gone, Ziad returned to his house and was soon joined by his wife, and eight children.

Shortly after 1.00am, on Monday, 29 December 2008, the Al-Absi family was struck by a missile whilst the family was sleeping. Three boys were killed in the attack:

Sudqi - aged 4 years
Ahmad - aged 12 years
Mohammad - aged 13 years
These deaths were the obvious and foreseeable consequence of firing a missile into a densely populated refugee camp. The children’s mother, Afaf, remains in hospital in a critical condition. Only one member of the family, Mahmoud, escaped injury in the attack.

Please consider sending an urgent appeal to your elected representatives demanding:

An immediate end to Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip and a ceasefire by all parties.
The immediate provision of urgent humanitarian and medical assistance to the Gaza Strip.
The immediate lifting of Israel’s siege of the Gaza Strip to allow the free flow of goods and services in and out of the territory.
An immediate freeze of the EU-Israel upgrade process. Any future Action Plan for the upgrade must include clear and measurable human rights benchmarks for which Israel must be held accountable.

Speak out against the slaughter in Gaza
By Redress Information & Analysis

4 January 2009

Redress Information & Analysis calls on its readers to expose Israel’s stooges in the various lobby groups in Britain, Europe and the United States, and to fight back against pro-Israel bias in the media.

On 27 December 2008 the Israeli air force launched a murderous campaign against the people of the Gaza Strip, many of whom are refugees from its previous campaigns of ethnic cleansing. This culminated in a ground aggression on 3 January 2009.

To date, 430 Palestinians had been murdered and some 2,200 others wounded.

These figures are only illustrative: by the time you see the video below, they would have increased even more.

Meanwhile, Israel’s stooges in the media and governments of Britain, the European Union and the United States are either silent or fighting a rear-guard action to justify Israel’s slaughter of Palestinians.

Among Israel’s stooges are, in Britain, “Labour Friends of Israel”, “Conservative Friends of Israel” and “Liberal Democratic Friends of Israel”, and in the United States, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and the Anti-Defamation League.

The images displayed in the video below are intended to give you a taste of what it is like to be a neighbour of the racist, Jews-only state of Israel.

After you have watched the video, please ask yourself:

If the images you have just watched were of your family, relatives or friends, or if the destruction was of your home and neighbourhood, would you forgive those who are inflicting death and destruction on your loved ones and on your home?
Given that the overwhelming majority of those who call themselves Israelis support the killing of Arabs in general and Palestinians in particular, what are the chances of peace or coexistence with Israelis?
Could the Europeans or the Jews forgive the Nazis for their atrocities? If the answer is no, then why should we forgive the racist Israeli murderers and their European and American stooges?
How long will Europe and the United States allow Israel and its elaborate network of stooges in the “Friends of Israel” lobby groups to morally blackmail them into silence over Israel’s crimes by abusing the memory of the Holocaust?'

De Israelische Terreur 543

'This is from the editor-in-chief of South Africa's largest newspaper (circulation: 3 million). Although one would expect such analysis from South Africa today, the picture is not quite so rosy.

The government of South Africa issued a statement in the beginning of the ongoing Israeli massacre in Gaza asking "both sides" to stop the violence, most hypocritically and revoltingly equating the occupier with the occupied, the colonial oppressor and the oppressed! They've consistently treated Israel as a most favored nation, immune from almost all serious criticism, partly as a proven bridge to the US Congress and White House. They've maintained excellent and fast growing trade relations with Israel, and not just in the diamond industry, despite the heroic efforts by former minister Ronnie Kasrils and a few of his principled colleagues to push for sanctions against Israel.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, COSATU's leadership, the South African Council of Churches and many civil society organizations and mass movements have steadily compared Israel to apartheid SA and have called for effective measures to hold it accountable, including through BDS. Still, SA's leadership has tried to play Red Cross, more or less, or to appear as a "neutral" (read: totally biased) bystander in the face of Israel's occupation and apartheid, betraying the history and founding principles of the South African struggle against their own apartheid regime and its closest ally and blood-relative, Israel.

Given this context, the article below is a relatively fresh breeze -- despite its obvious problems! -- in an otherwise bleak South African "mainstream" that wants to look as "white" as possible.

Hold Israel to the same standard of civilised conduct as other lands
Mondli Makhanya Published:Jan 04, 2009

As we hugged, kissed, shook hands and made merry on Wednesday night, Gaza was bleeding.

About 400 of the Palestinian territory's people had been killed, and more than 2000 had been severely injured during what must rank as one of the most heartless military operations in recent years.

A further 1.5 million were in need of humanitarian assistance as a result of the attacks and an ongoing blockade by Israel.

Since last Saturday, the people of Gaza have been subjected to non-stop bombardment by the Israeli military, ostensibly in retaliation for rocket attacks by Hamas militants.

Israel's response to the "provocation" amounted to a steroid-pumped heavyweight boxer arriving to fight an anaemic midget armed with steel-lined boxing gloves.

Israel's response to these attacks was, as always, wanton destruction of everything that lay before it.

Civilians, including children, were not spared, as the indiscriminate airborne attacks intensified.

The Israeli government claimed it was just targeting Hamas bases and strategic installations, but in reality it was sowing terror among all Gaza's inhabitants.

It's part of the "collective punishment" that Israel has meted out to Palestinians in response to attacks.

This "collective punishment" often takes the form of bulldozing the homes of bombers, razing entire neighbourhoods, cutting a city off from the world (never mind all the attendant humanitarian risks) and indiscriminately blasting suburbs.

Should we have been surprised by this week's events?

Of course not.

This story has been playing out like this for decades.

It's just the brutishness and the brazen arrogance with which Israel carries out its terror that has become worse.

And Israel has every right to be brazen and arrogant about the inhumane manner in which it treats Palestinians.

It knows it has the world powers on its side and, no matter how low it sinks in its immorality, it will always be protected by the major powers.

I was unfortunate (it's definitely not fortunate to witness horror) to have seen the raw work of the Israeli state first hand during a visit to the region during the middle of 2008.

The group that I was part of visited many parts of the country and saw advanced apartheid at work.

I remember thinking then that not in their worst hour of depravity could the Nats have been so vile. So vile that it has traumatised and disgusted many of those military conscripts and officers who are meant to enforce Israel's authority over the Palestinians.

One of these young men, Yehuda Shaul, was a commander in the Israeli Defence Forces until he could no longer stomach the cruelty he himself was meting out and co-founded Breaking the Silence, a group that gives voice to serving and former soldiers who wanted to share their experiences of the conflict.

He became part of a growing brigade of Israelis who are dissociating themselves from the injustices being perpetrated by their government.

But they are a voice the world powers do not want to hear.

They are a voice not even Barack Obama will want to hear, despite his great mantra of "CHANGE".

Obama will look the other way and find all manner of justifications for Israel's brutality.

The victim will continue to be seen as the aggressor.

The Western world's unquestioning loyalty to the state of Israel will ensure that the world's most oppressive state will continue to behave in an inhumane manner for decades to come.

For only when the powers that really matter tell Israel in unequivocal terms that the evil that it perpetrates is unacceptable will Tel Aviv wake up and realise that it has to behave in a manner expected of those who live in this century.

Israel is part of the global community and is a signatory to many of the conventions that govern human conduct in the modern era.

We should abhor what it does in exactly the same way that we abhor Russia's terrorism in Chechnya and its aggression in Georgia, Robert Mugabe's violation of human rights and his deliberate starvation of his people, China's jackboot treatment of Tibetans, and the Burmese junta's oppression of that country's people.

In our country, we have many apologists for the Israeli state who treat any criticism of Israel as anti-Semitic diatribe.

That it certainly isn't.

It's about expecting a modern state in the modern era to behave in a civilised manner.

The state of Israel has every right to defend itself against aggression and to secure its citizens.

But no state has the right to do that at the expense of the human rights and right to life of innocent civilians.

Unless we are prepared to see Israel's brutal oppression for what it is, and say something about it, we have no right to say anything about any human-rights violators in other parts of the world.

Not even about the mad despot next door.'

shock and awe in Gaza, a long-planned campaign perniciously aimed at
ousting a “regime” that came to power via popular, democratic vote.

Yes, such rockets exist, but they’re little more than slingshots against
Israel’s incredible military might, and they’re used out of desperation
by Palestinians who’ve never been accorded the democratic space within
which to gain redress of their eminently just grievances.

Israeli apologists have presented absurd propaganda about those devices.

We’ve been asked, for instance, what would we do if rockets were being
launched on our homes in New York or Texas, from Canada or Mexico?

The proper answer is that, if those two nations had been unlawfully
occupied or embargoed by the United States for 60 years of relentless
oppression and repression, and if all attempts at peaceful change had been
forcefully prevented or scuttled by the U.S., then such attacks would be an
understandable, indeed a justifiable attempt at gaining intolerably
deferred liberty.

Our appropriate response wouldn’t be to bomb the hell out of the nearest
Canadian or Mexican city, but to collectively look into mirrors and
earnestly ask ourselves, “What have we done wrong to incur their
wrath?”

And then act to correct the situation.

Conscientious Israelis acknowledge that the Hamas rockets rationale is
fraudulent. For instance, Jerusalem Post writer Larry Derfner has noted,
“We don’t want to see how people in Gaza are living, we block it out of
our minds -- which, I suppose, is natural for a society at war, but which
also keeps that war going longer than it might if we would recognize that
Gaza is getting so much the worst of it.

“The [Palestinian] Kassam [rockets] have terrorized the 25,000 people in
Sderot and its environs, but have caused very, very few deaths or serious
wounds. By contrast, Israel has terrorized 1.5 million Gazans, locked them
inside their awfully narrow borders, throttled their economy, and killed
and seriously wounded thousands of them . . .

“This is crazy. Israel is the superpower of the Middle East, but because
we still think we’re the Jews of Europe in the 1930s, or the Israelites
under Pharaoh, we spend a lot more time fighting our enemies than we might
if we looked at the whole picture, not just our half of it . . .”

As Gazan hospitals and morgues fill beyond capacity because of an ongoing
air assault that cruelly began at precisely the hour when countless
children were heading home from school, we’re expected to believe that
small craters mostly in empty Israeli fields constitute this terrible
episode’s chief sin.'
