Here is MY deficit-reduction plan. This plan does not reflect the views of anyone but myself -- and maybe half the population. Unlike deficit plans from the "serious people" in DC, this one doesn't annihilate the poor and gut Social Security and the middle class while passing even more of the benefits of our society up to a few at the top.

1) Restore pre-Reagan top tax rates. We didn't have massive deficits until we reduced the top tax rates.

2) Income is income. No more reduced capital gains tax rate. The incentive to invest should be to make a bunch of money from a good investment. The reason there is a low capital gains tax rate is that the wealthy get most of their income from capital gains. And the reason they get most of their income from capital gains is there is a low capital gains rate. The resulting income shifting schemes are a drag on the rest of us. (Also applies to dividends.)

3) Income is income. Inheritance income should be taxed as income, except there should be a "democracy cap" on how much someone can inherit. We decided not to have an aristocracy when we founded this country so we shouldn't have one.

4) Businesses should be taxed or not taxed, but not taxed AND not taxed. They shouldn't be able to use "double Irish" or "Dutch sandwich" or operate out of PO boxes in Bermuda or the Cayman Islands. (Bonus, this also helps reduce incentives to send our jobs and factories out of the country.)

5) If you don't pay your taxes We, the People won't pay to provide you with services. We can start by not allowing you to have a driveway that connects to public streets, or water/sewer hookups or mail. Also we won't enforce any contracts for you, including the one that says you "own" your house(s). And no government-developed Internet for you.

If companies like Google want to "double Irish" and "Dutch Sandwich" us or operate out of PO boxes in tax havens, we shouldn't let them use government services like courts, or the government-developed Internet. See how well they operate without access to roads (that includes for employees to get to go to work.) How about withdrawing the limited liability protection that investors in corporations receive? And of course no protection for "intellectual property" or trademarks. Oh, yeah, no access to anyone who went to a school that used tax dollars. And no government services means no sea-lane protection for your products shipping from Chinese factories, by the way.

6) Speaking of sea-lane protection, why do we have a military budget comparable to when we faced nuclear annihilation by the Soviet empire? Bases in Germany and Japan? And why can I go to this website, pick a DC-area zip code, say 22314, and learn that "Dollar Amount of Defense Contracts Awarded to Contractors in this Zip Code from 2000 to 2009: $7,086,397,848." Seriously, scroll down the page and look at some of the contracts and amounts awarded. I suspect there's some serious deficit reduction to be found in the military budget. A comprehensive and very public audit of where all that money has been going since, say, 1981 might take a chunk out of the debt problem all by itself.

7) I could start listing all the corporate subsidies, tax breaks, monopoly grants, schemes, contracts, etc. that we pay for, but I think you get the idea. How about calling bribery by its name: bribery, and doing something about it?

8) To the extent that implementing this plan does not clear up the deficit and start paying off the debt, how about a yearly national property tax on all individual holdings above, say, $5 million, with the tax rate progressively increasing as total wealth increases, and keep doing this each year until the debt is paid off. Perhaps start at 1% on $5 million, 2.5% at $10 million, 5% at $50 million, etc. (Hedge fund managers and investment bankers start at 50% and go up, just for the heck of it. We can call this the "get the money from where the money went tax.")

So there is MY deficit-reduction plan. Or, instead, we could do what the "serious people" deficit-reduction plans do: cut services for We, the People, cut Social Security, cut health care, cut education, cut infrastructure, cut the things that make life better for people, and give all the money to a few at the top. Take your pick.

Bernays believed in "engineering public consent" and creating "false realties" as news. Here are examples of how this works today.

Edward Bernays, the American nephew of Sigmund Freud, is said to have invented modern propaganda. During the first world war, he was one of a group of influential liberals who mounted a secret government campaign to persuade reluctant Americans to send an army to the bloodbath in Europe. In his book, Propaganda, published in 1928, Bernays wrote that the “intelligent manipulation of the organised habits and opinions of the masses was an important element in democratic society” and that the manipulators “constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power in our country”. Instead of propaganda, he coined the euphemism “public relations”.

The American tobacco industry hired Bernays to convince women they should smoke in public. By associating smoking with women’s liberation, he made cigarettes “torches of freedom”. In 1954, he conjured a communist menace in Guatemala as an excuse for overthrowing the democratically-elected government, whose social reforms were threatening the United Fruit company’s monopoly of the banana trade. He called it a “liberation”.

Bernays was no rabid right-winger. He was an elitist liberal who believed that “engineering public consent” was for the greater good. This was achieved by the creation of “false realities” which then became “news events”. Here are examples of how it is done these days:

False reality The last US combat troops have left Iraq “as promised, on schedule”, according to President Barack Obama. TV screens have filled with cinematic images of the “last US soldiers” silhouetted against the dawn light, crossing the border into Kuwait.

Fact They are still there. At least 50,000 troops will continue to operate from 94 bases. American air assaults are unchanged, as are special forces’ assassinations. The number of “military contractors” is currently 100,000 and rising. Most Iraqi oil is now under direct foreign control.

False reality BBC presenters and reporters have described the departing US troops as a “sort of victorious army” that has achieved “a remarkable change in [Iraq’s] fortunes”. Their commander, General David Petraeus, is a “celebrity”, “charming”, “savvy” and “remarkable”.

Fact There is no victory of any sort. There is a catastrophic disaster; and attempts to present it as otherwise are a model of Bernays’ campaign to “re-brand” the slaughter of the first world war as “necessary” and “noble”. In 1980, Ronald Reagan, running for president, re-branded the invasion of Vietnam, in which up to three million people died, as a “noble cause”, a theme taken up enthusiastically by Hollywood. Today’s Iraq war movies have a similar purging theme: the invader as both idealist and victim.

False reality It is not known how many Iraqis have died. They are “countless” or maybe “in the tens of thousands”.

Fact As a direct consequence of the Anglo-American led invasion, a million Iraqis have died. This figure from Opinion Research Business is based on peer-reviewed research led by Johns Hopkins University in Washington DC, whose methods were secretly affirmed as “best practice” and “robust” by the Blair government’s chief scientific adviser, as revealed in a Freedom of Information search. This figure is rarely reported or presented to “charming” and “savvy” American generals. Neither is the dispossession of four million Iraqis, the malnourishment of most Iraqi children, the epidemic of mental illness and the poisoning of the environment.

False reality The British economy has a deficit of billions which must be reduced with cuts in public services and regressive taxation, in a spirit of “we’re all in this together”.

Fact We are not in this together. What is remarkable about this public relations triumph is that only 18 months ago the diametric opposite filled TV screens and front pages. Then, in a state of shock, truth was unavoidable, if briefly. The Wall Street and City of London financiers’ trough was on full view for the first time, along with the venality of once celebrated snouts. Billions in public money went to inept and crooked organisations known as banks, which were spared debt liability by their Labour government sponsors.

Within a year, record profits and personal bonuses were posted, and state and media propaganda had recovered its equilibrium. Suddenly, the “black hole” was no longer the responsibility of the banks, whose debt is to be paid by those not in any way responsible: the public. The received media wisdom of this “necessity” is now a chorus, from the BBC to the Sun. A masterstroke, Bernays would surely say.

False reality The former government minister Ed Miliband offers a “genuine alternative” as leader of the British Labour Party.

Fact Miliband, like his brother David, the former foreign secretary, and almost all those standing for the Labour leadership, is immersed in the effluent of New Labour. As a New Labour MP and minister, he did not refuse to serve under Blair or speak out against Labour’s persistent warmongering. He now calls the invasion of Iraq a “profound mistake”. Calling it a mistake insults the memory and the dead. It was a crime, of which the evidence is voluminous. He has nothing new to say about the other colonial wars, none of them mistakes. Neither has he demanded basic social justice: that those who caused the recession clear up the mess and that Britain’s fabulously rich corporate minority be seriously taxed, starting with Rupert Murdoch.

Of course, the good news is that false realities often fail when the public trusts its own critical intelligence, not the media. Two classified documents recently released by Wikileaks express the CIA’s concern that the populations of European countries, which oppose their governments’ war policies, are not succumbing to the usual propaganda spun through the media. For the rulers of the world, this is a conundrum, because their unaccountable power rests on the false reality that no popular resistance works. And it does.

Kern van de zaak is de problematische houding van de meerderheid van de joodse organisaties binnen en buiten Israel tegenover het verschijnsel zionistische terreur. Die houding is ook de reden waarom jij je tegenover mij zo muisstil houdt, want je zult je nooit in het openbaar durven te distantieren van de Joodse terreur die tot de etnische zuivering van Israel en Palestina heeft geleid, terreur die nog steeds door de 'Joodse staat' wordt uitgeoefend middels de diefstal van Palestijns land en het terroriseren van de Palestijnse bevolking met geweld. Want wees eerlijk: alleen via de terreur van het geweld weten de Joods-Israeli's de Westbank bezet te houden en Gaza te belegeren. Terreur, niets anders, en iedereen die dit actief steunt is zelf een terrorist en moet niet klagen wanneer hij vervolgens geconfronteerd wordt met volkomen begrijpelijke tegenterreur.

Barend, jij bent niet anders dan andere zionisten als bijvoorbeeld Ronny Naftaniel van het CIDI in je steun aan een land dat steeds meer de kenmerken heeft van een schurkenstaat. Muisstil zijn jullie zodra geconfronteerd met de vraag:

waarom steunen jullie direct of indirect de diefstal van Palestijns land en waarom vergoeden jullie de Palestijnen niet voor het verlies van al hun bezittingen, terwijl jullie wel verwachten dat de Nederlandse belastingbetalers ook joden die geen slachtoffer waren financieel 'compenseren' voor het leed van andere joden?

Wat is dit voor a-sociale mentaliteit? Op welke overtuiging berust dit hypocriete gedrag? Niet op het feit dat de Joden in Israel slachtoffer zijn, want inmiddels zijn ze zelf dader geworden zolang zij zich niet publiekelijk verzetten tegen de zionistische terreur. Nogmaals, dit is de kern van de zaak, de op zijn zachtst gezegd: ambivalente houding van veel joden tegenover de langdurige zionistische terreur. Ambivalent, op zijn minst en op zijn ergst collaboratie met de terreur en de terreur-plegers, zoals de terroristen die door het CIDI zijn uitgenodigd om in Nederland hun nederzettingen-terreur te komen rechtvaardigen.

Barend, je bent ouder dan ik, je hebt dus meer levenservaring kunnen opdoen, je zou je dan ook moeten schamen in plaats van net te doen alsof je geen enkel begrip hebt voor de ideologische opvattingen van de terroristische organisatie Irgoen Zvai Leumi, zoals je eerst nog suggereerde. Ik daag je uit je te distantieren van illegale Joodse kolonisten die op die manier de Palestijnse bevolking terroriseren. Zelfs in het bestuur van de Irgoen Olei Holland die door jouw organisatie wordt gesubsidieerd zit iemand die een illegale Joodse kolonist is. Burgemeesters Israël nu wel welkom

Het Centrum Informatie en Documentatie Israël (CIDI) heeft drie Israëlische burgemeesters uitgenodigd in Nederland. Het drietal, een uit een Israëlische gemeente, een uit een Arabische gemeente en een van een Joodse nederzetting op de Westelijke Jordaanoever, arriveert zondag. Dat liet het CIDI donderdag weten.

*De burgemeesters hebben onder meer gesprekken met enkele Tweede Kamerleden, bezoeken een vertegenwoordiger van de Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten (VNG) en gaan langs bij collega's in enkele gemeenten. De uitnodiging volgt nadat de VNG in september had geweigerd een delegatie Israëlische burgemeesters te ontvangen. Aanleiding was het feit dat onder hen zes burgemeesters van Joodse nederzettingen op de Westelijke Jordaanoever waren. De nederzettingen op Palestijns gebied zijn in strijd met het internationaal recht.

Ik kreeg van een joodse vredesactiviste deze vraag opgestuurd

Kunnen we als particulieren een aanklacht tegen die meneer indienen in het kader van universele jurisdictie?
En tegen Directeur CIDI wegens aiding and abetting? We zouden dit weekend actie willen ondernemen.

Een goede vraag, want in 2004 bepaalde het Internationaal Gerechtshof in Den Haag, het hoogste rechtscollege ter wereld dat de Joodse nederzettingen op de Westbank illegaal waren en onmiddellijk ontruimd dienden te worden, waarbij werd aangetekend dat:

159. Given the character and the importance of the rights and obligations involved, the Court is of the view that all States are under an obligation not to recognize the illegal situation resulting from the construction of the wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including in and around East Jerusalem. They are also under an obligation not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by such construction. It is also for all States, while respecting the United Nations Charter and international law, to see to it that any impediment, resulting from the construction of the wall, to the exercise by the Palestinian people of its right to self determination is brought to an end. In addition, all the States parties to the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War of 12 August 1949 are under an obligation, while respecting the United Nations Charter and international law, to ensure compliance by Israel with international humanitarian law as embodied in that Convention.

Met andere woorden: de Nederlandse staat dient op te treden tegen een Nederlandse propaganda-organisatie die hier Joods-Israeli's een platform geeft om de terreur van de bezetting en diefstal van Palestijns land te rechtvaardigen. Men zou een kort geding kunnen aanspannen tegen de Nederlandse vanwege het niet voldoen aan 'an obligation not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by such construction.' Of dit het gewenste resultaat tot gevolg heeft is een tweede, in elk geval zal het de broodnodige publiciteit opleveren.

Ach, het CIDI. Ooit opgericht na de Yom Kippur oorlog en de Arabische olieboycot van de VS en Nederland om een beetje begrip te kweken voor Israel in een tijd dat het ze daar in Jeruzalem wat tegen zat. Ooit een beetje progressief, voor een twee-statenoplossing toen de rechtse Israeli's daar mordicus tegen waren, en tegen de nederzettingen toen de rechtse Israeli's daar juist erg voor waren.
Maar dat was toen. In een tijd waarin rechts in Israel het voor het zeggen heeft, waarin zelfs Netayahu zegt voor een twee-statenoplossing te zijn, en waarin het CIDI moet opkomen voor een Israel waarvan bijna een tiende van de bevolking woont in nederzettingen in Oost-Jeruzalem of op de Westoever, heeft het CIDI niets progressiefs meer. Eén van zijn medewerkers, Wim Kortenoeven, kon zelfs moeiteloos met zijn anti-Islamitische en anti-Palestijnse standpunten overstappen van de CIDI-burelen in de bankjes van de PVV_fractie in de Tweede Kamer. CIDI steunt het Israelische afknijpbeleid van Gaza, spreekt zich niet uit tegen de hardhandige judaïsering van Jeruzalem, neemt geen stelling tegen het pakket ultra-nationalistische wetten dat nu op behandeling wacht in de Knesset en omhelst intussen ook het nederzettingebeleid.
Nou ja, probeert het nederzettingenbeleid salonfähig te maken. Maar dat komt wel ongeveer op hetzelfde neer. Lees wat het CIDI schrijft op zijn site:

'Onlangs weigerde de Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten (VNG) om een dertigtal Israelische collega's te ontvangen in Nederland, omdat daar ook enkele burgemeesters van steden op de Westelijke Jordaanoever bij zaten. In de delegatie waren zowel Joodse als Arabische burgemeesters vertegenwoordigd. Omdat CIDI meent dat de contacten tussen de Nederlandse en Israelische lokale overheden nuttig en inspirerend kunnen zijn, hebben we enkele leden van de aanvankelijke delegatie uitgenodigd alsnog ons land te bezoeken.'

Let op de woordkeus: er zaten ook enkele burgemeesters van steden op de Westelijke Jordaanoever bij. Die steden heten in de wandeling nederzettingen.

Het CIDI weer:

'Tussen 28 en 30 november komen drie Israelische burgemeesters op uitnodiging van het CIDI naar Nederland. Het programma bestaat ondermeer uit ontmoetingen met Tweede Kamerleden, een gesprek met een vertegenwoordiger van de VNG en een bezoek aan enkele gemeenten en burgemeesters . Op maandagavond 29 november om 20.00 uur worden ze bij het CIDI in Den Haag ontvangen. Vrienden van het CIDI kunnen zich nog aanmelden om deze bijeenkomst bij te wonen.
De delegatie bestaat uit de volgende personen: Dhr. Pini Badash, voormalig Knesset-lid en burgemeester van Omer gelegen in de Negev woestijn. Dhr. Samir Darwish, burgemeester van Zemer, een samenvoeging van verschillende Arabische gemeenten in Noord-Israel en Avi Naim, burgemeester van Beit Arye-Ofarim, een plaatsje op de Westelijke Jordaanoever 13 km ten oosten van vliegveld Ben Gurion.'

En weer die woordkeus: Beit Arye-Ofarim, een plaatsje op de Westelijke Jordaanoever.

Voor wie het niet weet hier wat bijzonderheden over Beit Aryeh. Beit Aryeh, een nederzetting van de rechtse (Herut)- jeugdbeweging Betar, en Ofarim zijn twee nederzettingen die enkele jaren geleden tot één nederzetting van ruim 3000 mensen werden samengevoegd. Ze zijn grotendeels gebouwd op land dat is afgenomen van het enkele duizenden jaren oude christelijke, Palestijnse dorp Aboud, waarschijnlijk een van de oudste dorpen in Palestina. Dit schrijft de Britse christelijke organisatie Leicester Holy Land Appeal erover:

In 1980 the illegal Israeli settlement Beit Arye was built on 80 Hectares confiscated from Aboud. In 1982 a further 70 Hectares were taken for construction of the illegal settlement Ofarim. The neighbouring villages such as Al-Lubban and Rantis also lost land with construction of the settlements. In December 2000 settlers burnt or uprooted 4000 Aboud Olive Trees. Raids by settlers continue. On 7th October 2005 they uprooted 500 grape vines in Aboud.

Dat is echter niet alles. Beit Aryeh en Ofarim zijn ook via een extra bocht van het zogenoemde 'Veiligheidshek' (ook wel De Muur) bij de Israelische kant getrokken om het zo te zeggen. Op het kaartje hieronder is te zien dat de Muur Aboud isoleert van de omliggend dorpen en van zijn land.

The Leicester Holy Land Appeal zegt erover dat de Muur de inwoners van Aboud isoleert van een verdere 3887 Dunums(10 Dunums= One Hectare, 4 Dunums= One Acre) oftewel 26% van hun land, van een groot deel van hun olijf- en fruitbomen en van een belangrijk deel van de water aquifer (20% van de Westbank watervoorraad) waarop hun dorp is gevestigd. Ook snijdt de Muur het dorp af van Rantis en andere dorpen in het noordwesten.

Ik weet niet met welke Kamerleden deze bezoekende burgemeesters gaan praten, maar als het Kamerleden van het CDA, de ChristenUnie of de SGP zijn, is het wellicht interessant voor hen om te weten dat burgemeester Avi Naim van Beit Aryeh land heeft ingepikt, niet alleen van één van de alleroudste dorpen, maar ook van een van de alleroudste christelijke dorpen in Palestina. Volgens de eigen overlevering is het dorp 3000 jaar oud en was het nog Christus zelf die hen heeft bekeerd. (Wellicht is de informatie ook interessant voor Christenen voor Israel. Zij zijn onlangs nog langs geweest om Beit Aryeh, net als een aantal andere illegale nederzettingen, te verblijden met een hoeveelheid bloembollen).

Nogmaals de Leicester Holy Land Appeal:

Local tradition states that three millennia old Aboud received the faith of Christ from Christ himself. Ruins of the ancient Messiah Church mark the location where Jesus is said to have preached. Close to the village is the Roman Road that Jesus and the Holy Family would have used when travelling between the Galilee and Jerusalem. The Orthodox church in Aboud, was built in the 4th century days of the Roman emperor Constantine. The Byzantine capitals of its columns bear the image of cross and palm branches. In the southern wall of the church there is a plaque in Aramaic the language of Jesus.

Nog een kleine bijzonderheid die ook voor anderen die Avi Naim gaan ontmoeten de moeite waard is: Deze burgemeester werd in december 2009 korte tijd gearresteerd omdat hij de aanstichter was van het gewelddadig tegenhouden van inspecteurs die de toen afgekondigde bouwstop van tien maanden moesten controleren in zijn dorp.

Bij deze demonstratie van de oprechte vredeswil van de inwoners van de nederzetting, raakte een inspecteur gewond.

Om kort te gaan en terug te keren naar het begin: Het CIDI verzette zich ertegen dat de Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten onlangs een uitnodiging aan een dertigtal burgemeesters uit Israel introk, omdat er een aantal burgemeesters bijzat van nederzettingen op de Westoever (en daaronder een paar van de ergste diehards om niet te zeggen misdadigers). Het CIDI gaf daarmee al te kennen dat het de nederzettingenpolitiek wellicht nog met de mond afkeurt, maar in feite probeert goed te praten door de taboes te doorbreken op de omgang met vertegenwoordigers van deze gemeenten die in strijd met het internationaal recht zijn opgericht in bezet Palestijns gebied. Nu gaat de organisatie van Naftaniel nog een stapje verder door zelf, actief, zo'n illegale kolonistenvoorman hier naar toe te halen, voor te stellen aan de VNG, Tweede Kamerleden en de eigen CIDI-achterban. De conclusie moet duidelijk zijn, lijkt me. Het CIDI heeft zijn bezwaren tegen de nederzettingen laten varen en definitief ook laatste progressieve vijgenblaadje waar het nog meende staat op te kunnen maken, laten zakken. Als het nu nog probeert de indruk te wekken een eigen kijk op de situatie in Israel/Palestina te hebben, los van die van de regering in Jeruzalem, dan is dat hypocriete kletskoek - niets anders.

Ik ben het aan het lezen, nadat zijn laatste non-fiction werk al die jaren sinds zijn dood zwaar is gecensureerd is nu eindelijk zijn autobiografie verschenen. In de VS is het nu al een succes. In Nederland vernemen we er nauwelijks iets over, terwijl we toch te maken hebben met de eerste Amerikaan die zichzelf een anti-imperalist noemde en voorspelde dat men geen imperium in het Azie erop na kon houden en tegelijkertijd een democratie in de VS blijven. Voor me op mijn bureau ligt een brief van Unicef, het kinderfonds van de wereldgemeenschap. Op de enveloppe staat:

Bijna 1 miljoen kinderen in Guatemala zijn ondervoed. Zij willen maar één ding: zonder honger naar bed.

Waarom hebben deze kinderen honger? Doordat we de Amerikaanse terreur al heel lang steunen. Leest u maar:

Colonel Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán (Spanish pronunciation: [xaˈkoβo ˈarβenð ɣuðˈman]; September 14, 1913 – January 27, 1971) was a Guatemalan military officer and politician who served as Defense Minister of Guatemala from 1944–1951, and as President of Guatemala from 1951 to 1954.

He was ousted in a coup d'état engineered by the United States government and CIA, and was replaced by a military junta, headed by Colonel Carlos Castillo.

He went into exile after the coup and died in Mexico in 1971...

Historical background
In the 1890s, the United States began to implement the Monroe Doctrine, pushing out European colonial powers and establishing U.S. hegemony over resources and labor in Latin American nations. The dictators that ruled Guatemala during the late 19th and early 20th century were generally very accommodating to U.S. business and political interests. So unlike other Latin American nations, such as Haiti, Nicaragua and Cuba, the U.S. did not have to use overt military force to maintain dominance in Guatemala, and the Guatemalan military/police worked closely with the U.S. military and State Department to secure U.S. interests. The Guatemalan government exempted several U.S. corporations from paying taxes, privatized and sold off publicly owned utilities, and gave away huge swaths of public land.[3]

In 1930, the dictator General Jorge Ubico came to power, backed by the United States, and initiated one of the most brutally repressive governments in Central American history. He created a widespread network of spies and informants, and had large numbers of political opponents tortured and put to death. A wealthy aristocrat (with an estimated income of $215,000 per year, in 1930s dollars) and a staunch anti-communist, he consistently sided with landowners and urban elites in disputes with peasants. He implemented a system of debt slavery and forced labor, and passed laws allowing landowners to execute workers as a "disciplinary" measure.[4][5][6][7][8] He also openly identified as a fascist; he admired Mussolini, Franco, and Hitler, saying at one point: "I am like Hitler. I execute first and ask questions later."[9][10][11][12][13] Ubico was disdainful of the indigenous population, calling them "animal-like", and stated that to become "civilized" they needed mandatory military training, comparing it to "domesticating donkeys". He gave away hundreds of thousands of hectares to the United Fruit Company (UFCO) and exempted them from taxes, and allowed the U.S. military to establish bases in Guatemala.[4][5][6][7][8]

Ubico considered himself to be "another Napoleon". He dressed ostentatiously, and surrounded himself with statues and paintings of the emperor, regularly commenting on the similarities between their appearances. He militarized numerous political and social institutions—including the post office, schools, and symphony orchestras—and placed military officers in charge of many government posts. He frequently travelled around the country performing "inspections", in dress uniform, followed by a military escort, a mobile radio station, an official biographer, and cabinet members.[4][14][15][16][17]

Ubico's repressive policies and arrogant demeanor eventually led to a widespread popular insurrection, led by middle-class intellectuals, professionals, and junior army officers. In July 1, 1944 Ubico resigned from office amidst a general strike and nationwide protests. Initially, he had planned to hand over power to the former director of police, General Roderico Anzueto, who he felt he could control. But his advisors noted that Anzueto's pro-Nazi sympathies had made him very unpopular, and that he would not be able to control the military. So Ubico instead chose to select a triumvariate of Major General Bueneventura Piñeda, Major General Eduardo Villagrán Ariza, and General Federico Ponce Vaides. The three generals promised to convene the national assembly to hold an election for a provisional president, but when the congress met on July 3, soldiers held everyone at gunpoint and forced them to vote for General Ponce, rather than the popular civilian candidate Dr. Ramón Calderón. Ponce, who had previously retired from military service due to alcoholism, took orders from Ubico and kept many of the officials who had worked in the Ubico administration. The repressive policies of the Ubico administration were continued.[4][18][19]

Opposition groups began organizing again, this time joined by many prominent political and military leaders, who deemed the Ponce regime unconstitutional. Among the military officers in the opposition were Jacobo Árbenz and Major Franciso Javier Araña. Ubico had fired Árbenz from his teaching post at the Escuela Politécnica, and since then Árbenz had been in El Salvador, organizing a band of revolutionary exiles. On October 19, 1944 a small group of soldiers and students, led by Árbenz and Arana, attacked the National Palace.[20]

By 1950, a handful of U.S. corporations controlled Guatemala's primary electrical utilities, the nation's only railroad, and the banana industry, which was Guatemala's chief agricultural export industry.[3] By the mid-1940s, Guatemalan banana plantations accounted for more than one quarter of all of United Fruit Company's production in Latin America.[21]

In March 1951, Árbenz assumed the presidency after Guatemala's second-ever universal-suffrage election, marking the first peaceful transition of power in Guatemala's history. He campaigned as a reformer and garnered 60% of the vote by promising to make Guatemala an economically independent, socialist state that would shed its colonial-era dependence on the U.S. His predecessor, Juan José Arévalo, had successfully begun a series of reforms to open the political process to all citizens. Arévalo's extension of voting and labor rights threatened the power of the traditional elite and led to more than twenty failed coup attempts to oust him.

Land reform
Arbenz set land reform as his central goal as only 2 % of the population owned 70 % of the land.

Árbenz continued Arévalo's reform agenda and, in June 1952, his government enacted an agrarian reform program. The agrarian reform law (decree 900) gave the government power to expropriate only uncultivated portions of large plantations. Estates of up to 670 acres (2.7 km2) were exempted if at least two thirds of the land was cultivated; also exempt were lands that had a slope of more than 30 degrees (a significant exemption in mountainous Guatemala). The land was then allocated to individual families. Owners of expropriated land were compensated according to the worth of the land claimed in May 1952 tax assessments. Land was paid for in twenty-five year bonds with a 3 percent interest rate.[23] Arbenz himself, a landowner through his wife, gave up 1,700 acres (7 km2) of his own land in the land reform program.[24]

While Árbenz's proposed agenda was welcomed by impoverished peasants who made up the majority of Guatemala's population, it provoked the ire of the upper landowning classes, powerful U.S. corporate interests, and factions of the military, who accused Árbenz of bowing to Communist influence. This tension resulted in noticeable unrest in the country. Carlos Castillo, an army officer, rebelled at the Aurora airport in the early 1950s, was defeated and shot, surviving his injuries. Castillo then spent some time in a Guatemalan prison before escaping and going into exile in 1951.[citation needed]

Coup

Instability, combined with Árbenz's relative tolerance of Guatemalan Party of Labour (PGT) and other leftists influences, prompted the CIA to draw up a contingency plan entitled Operation PBFORTUNE in 1951. It outlined a method of ousting Árbenz if he were deemed a Communist threat in the hemisphere.

The United Fruit Company - now renamed Chiquita - a U.S.-based corporation, was also threatened by Árbenz's land reform initiative. United Fruit was Guatemala's largest landowner, with 85% of its holdings uncultivated, vulnerable to Árbenz's reform plans. In calculating its tax obligations, United Fruit had consistently (and drastically) undervalued the worth of its holdings. In its 1952 taxes, it claimed its land was only worth $3 per acre. When, in accordance with United Fruit's tax claims, the Árbenz government offered to compensate the company at the $3 rate, the company claimed the land's true value was $75/acre but refused to explain the precipitous jump in its own determination of the land's value.

In 1952, the Guatemalan Party of Labour was legalized; Communists subsequently gained considerable minority influence over important peasant organizations and labor unions, but not over the governing political party and won only four seats in the 58-seat governing body. The CIA, having drafted Operation PBFORTUNE, was already concerned about Árbenz's potential Communist ties. United Fruit had been lobbying the CIA to oust reform governments in Guatemala since Arévalo's time but it wasn't until the Eisenhower administration that it found an ear in the White House. In 1954, the Eisenhower administration was still flush with victory from its covert operation to topple the Mossadegh government in Iran the year before. On February 19, 1954, the CIA began Operation WASHTUB, a plan to plant a phony Soviet arms cache in Nicaragua to demonstrate Guatemalan ties to Moscow.[25]

As it happened, WASHTUB was unnecessary. In May 1954, Czechoslovak weaponry arrived in secret into Guatemala aboard the Swedish ship Alfhem. The ship's manifests had been falsified as to the nature of its cargo. The U.S. took this as final proof of Árbenz's Soviet links. The Czechoslovaks supplied, for cash down, obsolete and barely functional German WWII weaponry.[26]

"The direct contacts between the Soviet Union and the Árbenz Government consisted of one Soviet diplomat working out an exchange of bananas for agricultural machinery, which fell through because neither side had refrigerated ships. The only other evidence of contact the CIA found after the operation were two bills to the Guatemalan Communist Party from a Moscow bookstore, totalling $22.95."[26]

The Árbenz government was convinced a U.S.-sponsored invasion was imminent: it had previously released detailed accounts of the CIA's Operation PBFORTUNE (called the White Papers) and perceived US actions at the OAS convention in Caracas that year as a lead-up to intervention. The administration ordered the CIA to sponsor a coup d'état, code-named Operation PBSUCCESS that toppled the government. Árbenz resigned on June 27, 1954 and was forced to flee, seeking refuge in the Mexican Embassy.

After the coup, Frank Wisner organised an operation called PBHistory to secure Árbenz Government documents. PBHistory aimed to prove Soviet control of Guatemala and, in so doing, hopefully provide actionable intelligence with regard to other Soviet connections and personnel in Latin America. Wisner sent two teams who, with the help of the Army and Castillo Armas's junta, gathered 150,000 documents. Ronald M. Schneider, an extra-Agency researcher who later examined the PBHistory documents, found no traces of Soviet control and substantial evidence that Guatemalan Communists acted alone, without support or guidance from outside the country.[27]

Bernays adviseerde zijn client om ogenblikkelijk een mediahetze te starten. 'I have the feeling that Guatemala might respond to pitiless publicity in this country,' zo verklaarde hij later trots. Onder andere via een perscampagne werd de democratische regering afgeschilderd als communistisch. Tegelijkertijd werden prominente Congresleden bewerkt en tenslotte viel de regering dankzij een CIA-complot. Het gevolg was dat er een meedogeloze drie decennia durende oorlog burgeroorlog ontstond waarbij tenminste 200.000 doden vielen. 93 procent werd vermoord door het leger, de doodseskaders en andere door de VS opgeleide gangsters, aldus een officieel overheidsrapport. Het toont aan hoe dodelijk propaganda kan zijn. Maar daarvoor moet eerst de vijand goed in beeld zijn gebracht door leugens en vertekening van de werkelijkeid. Er moet natuurlijk een bedreigende vijand zijn, en iemand moet hem aanwijzen, anders lukt de propaganda niet.

En de vijand is in de praktijk iedereen die de positie van de arme machtelozen op aarde, onder wie de meer dan 1 miljard mensen die nu honger lijdt, fundamenteel wil verbeteren, met of zonder geweld. Vandaar de staatsgrepen, de CIA, de macht, of die nu in handen is van Chinese dictators of Amerikaanse presidenten, en vandaar ook dat er nu voor mij op mijn bureau een bedelbrief van Unicef ligt voor ondermeer die 1 miljoen hongerende kinderen in Guatemala. Wat te doen? Betalen, omdat we niet de politieke lef hebben om een eind te maken aan onze westerse terreur? Symptomen blijven bestrijden, en de ziekte laten voortwoekeren?

De Volkskrant 110

DEN HAAG - PVV-Kamerlid Eric Lucassen wordt al zeven jaar achtervolgd door gerechtelijke deurwaarders en incassobureaus vanwege achterstallige betalingen en het niet nakomen van financiële verplichtingen. Ook staat hij bij uitkeringsinstantie UWV te boek als ontvanger van een uitkering.

Maar nu, onderaan de pagina, in de Voetnoot van Arnon Grunberg staat:

Inside Job.

Op het IDFA draait de documentaire Inside Job van Charles Ferguson. Inside Job laat zien dat het economisch team van Obama bestaat uit personen die direct of indirect verantwoordelijk waren voor de crisis van 2008. Nog schokkender is de corruptie in academische kringen die blijkt uit Inside Job. Invloedrijke economen die papers schrijven voor geld, afkomstig van bijvoorbeeld IJsland. De opdrachtgever bepaalde de inhoud van de paper; waarheid was van later zorg. Ook wie wil weten waarom 100 miljard euro naar Ierland zal gaan, zou de documentaire moeten zien. Banken verstrekten hypotheken aan iedereen. Die werden gebundeld en doorverkocht als veilige beleggingen bij AIG. Zij wedden erop dat de producten die zij verkochten als veilige beleggingen zouden falen. De Ierse banken waren gretige gokkers. Deze vraag ligt aan dit alles ten grondslag: hoeveel kost uw vertrouwen?

In reactie op de vraag aan de Volkskrant-lezer hoeveel de zwendel mag kosten kan onmiddellijk als antwoord worden gegeven 1 euro 40 per dag als u de Volkskrant in de losse verkoop aanschaft. Want al die jaren heeft de Volkskrant deze feiten nooit serieus geanalyseerd en in een context geplaatst. Integendeel zelfs: veel aandacht voor een kruimeldief als Lucassen, maar geen aandacht voor de grote gangsters in onder andere onze bankwereld, die miljarden verduisteren. Arnon Grunberg heeft gelijk: 'wie wil weten' hoe de vork in de steel zit 'zou de documentaire moeten zien.' Er zit niks anders op, de ware macht wordt door de Volkskrant beschermt, zoals ik keer op keer probeer aan te tonen. Ook bij de Volkskrant geldt het aloude adagium van mijn voormalige VPRO-collega Chris Kijne die het in al zijn onschuld zo treffend als volgt heeft verwoord:

Voor ons journalisten was het natuurlijk niet nieuw dat Wouter Bos ons niet altijd de waarheid vertelde. Wel is het nieuw dat ik op dit moment even niet meer weet of ik wel even hard als vroeger mijn best moet doen om hem die waarheid te laten vertellen. Of er inderdaad niet even een hoger belang is dan 'de waarheid, niets dan de waarheid.'

De Volkskrant dient een nog 'hoger belang' dan 'de waarheid, niets dan de waarheid,' het 'hoger belang' van wat Arie Elshout, adjunct-hoofdredacteur van de Volkskrant, 'de hooggeplaatsten' betitelt. Dit slag journalisten weet wat zijn plaats is, en waar de grenzen van zijn journalistieke taak precies liggen. Vandaar dat Lucassen ervan langs krijgt en niet de VVD, die het neoliberale model omarmt waaruit de banksters zijn voortgekomen. Dit is in feite het meest schokkend.
