The Dow recently closed above 14,000, the highest it's ever been since October of 2007. While the financial pundits on CNBC would use this figure to have us believe the economy is bouncing back better than ever, the only ones sharing in the benefit of a healthy market are the wealthy investor class and corporations that have been insulated from the effects of the recession that still continues for the rest of us. The influx of high-frequency trading that now makes up half of all trading signifies the change of using the market as a vehicle for making long-term investments to manipulating it for short-term profit.
The market's latest high numbers are due to corporations turning out record profits quarter after quarter, having grown profits by 171 percent under Obama's watch. Most of those profits have come about by companies cutting costs by shifting jobs overseas, where they can pay a Chinese worker a fraction of what they would pay an American worker to do the same job. News has also broken about Fortune 500 companies like Chevron, Bank of America, AT&T and IBM using inmate labor at private prisons, meaning they can slap a "Made in the USA" sticker on a product made by someone working for slave wages. The influx of immigrants looking for work thanks to free trade agreements like NAFTA, has led to the inevitable exploitation of immigrant labor which will continue as long as US immigration policy punishes the exploited rather than the companies exploiting them. And these record corporate profits also have right-wing governors and state legislatures to thank for union-busting right-to-work laws that really only exist as a vehicle for businesses to pay workers less money for the same work, and for Republicans to erode a major fundraising base for their opposition.

The rest of the uptick in corporate profits can be attributed to a lax tax code that allows companies to book profits made in the United States in overseas tax havens. There's an estimated $2.3 trillion in US corporate profits booked in overseas accounts. Apple alone stashes $1 billion a week in overseas accounts to dodge corporate taxes. That's equivalent to over 4 million full-time minimum-wage jobs, every week. The share of US tax revenue from corporations has gone from 6% of GDP in the 1950s to just 1% today.
The executives of these companies make out like bandits, as they use their increased profits to buy their own company's stock, which makes the stock price go up, making the stock options owned by the executives more valuable. And with dividends taxed at a much lower rate than actual work (20% vs. 35%), the tax revenue needed to keep society functioning continues to dwindle as the investor class accumulates greater wealth than ever before. The six Waltons who own Wal-Mart ownas much wealth as the bottom 40% of Americans.
Some financial analysts say this market surge is just a rally, destined to drop as Congress expects to wrangle with the deficit in May, including a possible downgrade of our credit rating. But the fact is, our deficit would disappear if we had a small sales tax on all Wall Street financial transactions, taxed capital gains at the same rate as by-God-hard-work and overhauled our tax code in favor of one that would do away with the loopholes that allow big corporations to offshore their billions in American profits. However, even that could get worse, as Obama has shown willingness to talk about a territorial tax code that would effectively allow corporations to pay a 0% tax rate on their profits all over the world, including the US.
entirely a story of change, since the disappearance of the frontier is the necessary corollary of pushing the frontier on. These themes may be exhausted in our culture, though the continuing popularity of Wayne seems to suggest that the need for this hero will call up again the kinds of story where he operated best, and the problems native to the form have certainly not disappered,
Wills: ‘The Western can deal with the largest themes in American history – beginning with the “original sin” of our country, the seizing of land from the original owners,’ maar het kan niet omgaan met de huidige problemen waarmee de mensheid wordt geconfronteerd. De filmster John Wayne
reflects our society upon itself, which is the source of his appeal, and of his danger. It is a mixed and terrifying image, full of the unresolved contradictions in our own ideal country. We may have no literal frontier left; but neither do we have a cult city, a temple, a holy center to our society. Our meaning lies still in motion, or so we seem to think – in the independent individual, the need for space as an arena of freedom. Do we really believe that we have escaped the myth of the frontier; the mystigue of the gun, the resistance to institutions? That’ll be the day.

This work would unmask the romantic assumptions that informed the mythology of the western genre and the politics of Manifest Destiny, bringing an obscure and violent moment to life and lifting the events out of the nineteenth century, casting them into the realm of the universal. In this sweeping context, questions of good and evil, morality and malevolence, and the very issue of human purpose are brought into sharp relief, all against the stark and exquisite beauty of a new setting --  the American West.

Frye:
The governing motive of the author’s work, especially Blood Meridian, is the question of meaning, purpose, and value in a universe that yields answers only in bright but fleeting glimpses. Can human beings speak of possibility, hope, even God, with any validity or intellectual credibility? Can the assumptions of inherent meaning reflected in the dominant world religions be entertained with any honesty by the twentieth-century mind? Though the novel recounts events in the 1850s, it is born of modern memory – from a sensibility conditioned by two world wars, the physical and psychological effects of genocide, the devastation of colonialism and environmental waste, as well as the collective anxiety of the nuclear age.
The Mythology of the American Frontier. 1600-1860. Slotkin schreef dat in de verslagen van dit soort praktijken ‘Moral considerations absolutely play no part… only the pragmatic values imposed by war in the wilderness. In Regeneration through Violence schreef Slotkin dat
The seventeenth-century missionaries saw the indians as embodiments of the spirit of nature in America, the type of fallen natural man. Since they lacked acquaintance with revealed religion, the Indians’ degenerate state was a heightened and exaggerated type of the fallen state of the Christianized English. Even their good friend Thomas Shepard said of them (in 1847). ‘What nation of people ever so deeply degenerated since Adams fall as these Indians?’ While there is no doubt that the missionaries sincerely wished to benefit the Indians, their writings reveal a curious lack of interest in them in the Indians and as men. The missionaries were chiefly interested in the Indians as converts or as symbol that could be useful in chastising those whose interest they had most at hart: English and New England Christians.
In Regeneration through Violence schreef hij:
Even at the source of the American myth there lies the fatal opposition, the hostility between two worlds, two races, two realms of thought and feeling.                                                                              ‘The land was ours before we were the land’s,’ said Robert Frost. The process by which we came to feel an emotional title to the land was charged with a passionate and aspiring violence, and ‘the deed of gift was many deeds of war.’ Because of the nature of myth and the myth-making process, it is a significant comment on our characteristic attitudes toward ourselves, our culture, our racial subgroupings, and our land that tales of strive between native Americans and interlopers, between dark races and light, became the basis of our mythology and that the Indian fighter and hunter emerged as the first of our national heroes.
Brother; We are told that your religion was given to your forefathers, and has been handed down from father to son. We also have a religion, which was given to our forefathers. We worship in that way. It teaches us to be thankful for all the favors we have received; to love each other, and to be united. We never quarrel about religion.
Brother; We do not wish to destroy your religion, we only want to enjoy our own. As we are going to part, we will come and take you by the hand; and hope the Great Spirit will protect you.
As the Indians began to approach the missionary, he rose hastily from his seat and replied, that he could not take them by the hand; that there was no fellowship between the religion of God and the works of the devil.
This being interpreted to the Indians, they smiled, and retired in a peaceable manner.

Richard Slotkin:
Their punishment is to leave the womblike Garden of Eden, in which their wants have all been anticipated and satisfied, and to enter a wilderness in which entail pain and hardship. In this crime and punishment the human race has its genesis, conceived in and bound forever by original sin; humanity’s very presence in the world is the confirmation of its evil beginning.
Professor Slotkin:
To the Indian the wilderness was a god, whether its face at the moment was good or evil; as a god it deserved and received worship for both its good and its evil, its beauty and its cruelty. Simarly, all the gods and the earth itself were referred to as members of one’s own immediate family, as close blood relations. For the Puritan the problem of religion was to winnow the wheat from the chaff, the good from the evil, and to preserve the former and extirpate the latter. The evil was of the world, of nature; the good was transcendent and supernatural. Hence it was quite appropriate to destroy the natural wilderness in the name of a higher good – and quite inappropriate for anyone to worship, as the Indians did, the world or the things of the world, such things being evil by nature.
In Regeneration Through Violence. the Mythology of the American Frontier.
how the attitudes and traditions that shape American culture evolved from the social and psychological anxieties of European settlers struggling in a strange new world to claim the land and displace the Native Americans. Using the popular literature of the seventeenth, eighteenth, and early nineteenth centuries - including captivity narratives, the Daniel Boone tales, and the writings of Hawthorne, Thoreau, and Melville - Slotkin traces the full development of this myth into a national myth.

A Life over deze alom gerespecteerde Amerikaanse geleerde:
Mumford’s history is itself a powerful form of cultural criticism… With the ancient Athenians, Mumford held to the idea that all healthy civilizations depended upon a balance of forces, an equilibrium between tradition and innovation, and that when this was upset they inevitably decayed.

Richard Sennett. The Fall of Public Man. 1977

De Amerikaanse socioloog en hoogleraar Richard Sennett in The Fall of Public Man:

Get Your Kicks on Route 66.’ En ‘Born to be wild. Get your motor runnin'/ Head out on the highway/ Looking for adventure/ In whatever comes our way/ Fire all of your guns at once/ And explode into space.’

When hit by boredom, go for it. Let yourself be crushed by it; submerge, hit bottom. In general, with things unpleasant, the rule is, the sooner you hit bottom, the faster you surface. .. The reason boredeom deserves such scrutiny is that it represents pure, undiluted time in all its repetitive, redundant, monotonous splendor.
In a manner of speaking, boredom is your window on time, on those properties of it one tends to ignore to the likely peril of one’s mental equilibrium. In short, it is your window on time’s infinity, which is to say, on your insignificance in it… For boredom speaks the laguage of time, and it is to teach you the most valuable lesson in your life – the one you didn’t get here, on these green lawns – the lesson of your utter insignificance. It is valuable to you, as well as to those you are to rub shoulders with. ‘You are finite,’ time tells you in a voice of boredom, ‘and whatever you do is, from my point of view, futile.’ As music to your ears, this, of course, may not count; yet the sense of futility, of limited significance even of your best, most ardent actions is better than the illusion of their consequences and the attendant self-aggrandizement.

For boredom is an evasion of time into your set of values. It puts your existence into its perspective, the net result of which is precision and humility. The former you learn about your own size, the more humble and the more compassionate you become to your likes, to that dust aswirl in a sunbeam or already immobile atop your table. Ah, how much life went into those flecks! Not from your point of view but from theirs. You are to them what time is to you; that’s why they look so small… You are insignificant because you are finite. Yet the more finite a thing is, the more it is charged with life, emotions, joy, fears, compassion. For infinity is not terribly lifely, not terribly emotional. Your boredom, at least. tells you that much. Because your boredom is the boredom of infinity… Try to embrace, or let yourself be embraced by, boredom and anguish, which anyhow are larger than you. No doubt you’ll find that bosom smothering, yet try to endure it as you can, and then some more. Above all, don’t think you’ve goofed somewhere along the line, don’t try to retrace your steps to correct the error. No, as the poet said, ‘Believe your pain.’

En voor de slechte verstaander voegde Joseph Brodsky hieraan toe: ‘If you find all this gloomy, you don’t know what gloom is.’

Jocasta thought that there was no order or design in the world, that dreams and prophecies had no validity; that man had complete freedom because it made no difference what he did – nothing made any sense. She was wrong; the design was there, and when she saw what it was she hanged herself. But the play now seems to give us a view of man’s position that is just as comfortless as her acceptance of a meaningless universe. What place is there in it for human freedom and meaningfull action? Oedipus did have one freedom: he was free to find out or not find out the truth… One freedom is allowed him: the freedom to search for the truth, the truth about the prophecies, about the gods, about himself. And of this freedom he makes full use. Against the advice and appeals of others, he pushes on, searching for the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. And in this search he shows all those great qualities that we admire in him – courage, intelligence, perseverance… This freedom to search, and the heroic way in which Oedopus uses it, make the play not a picture of man’s utter feebleness caught in the toils of fate, but on the contrary, a heroic example of man’s dedication to the search of truth, the truth about himself. This is perhaps the only freedom, the play seems to say, but there could be none more noble.
Robert Fagles:
ignorance can be remedied, the ignorant can learn, and the force with which Oedipus now reasserts his presence springs from the truth he now understands: that the universe is not a field for the play of blind chance, and that man is not its measure. This knowledge gives him a new strength which sustains him in his misery and gives him the courage needed to go on living, though he is now an outcast, a man from whom his fellow-men recoil in horror… The catastrophe of the tragic hero thus becomes the catastrophe of… man; all his furious energy and intellectual daring drive him on to this terrible discovery of his fundamental ignorance – he is not the measure of all things but the thing measured and found wanting.
Sophocles’ play has served modern man and his haunted sense of being caught in a trap not only as a base for a psychoanalytic theory which dooms the male infant to guilt and anxiety from his mother’s breast, but also as the model for a modern drama that presents us, using the ancient figures, our own terror of the unknown future which we fear we cannot control – our deep fear that every step we take forward on what we think is the road of progress may really be a step toward a foreordained rendezvous with disaster. The greatest of these modern versions is undoubtedly Jean Cocteau’s Machine Infernale; the title alone is, as the French say, a whole program. Cocteau also worked with Stravinsky on an operatic version of the Sophoclean play (the text in liturgical Latin), and for a recording of this work he wrote a prologue that sums up his compelling vision of man’s place in a strange and haunted universe. ‘Spectateurs,’ the author says in his forceful, rather nasal voice, ‘sans le savoir…’ without knowing it, Oedipus is at grips with the powers that watch us from the other side of death. They have spread for him, since the day of his birth, a trap and you are going to watch it snap shut… Nothing mortal can resist the chages Time brings: not bodily strength, not friendship between man and man, still less between city and city. No man can be confident of the future; human confidence is based on total ignorance.
Gemeten naar de kennis van de goden of de natuur, zo u wilt, is ‘human knowledge at its greatest ignorance compared to theirs… It is a universe governed by powers in whose justice man must assert, in ignorance and with little hope of confirmation, a desperate belief.
