Israel als een Schurkenstaat 307

Sonja heeft een nieuwe reactie op uw bericht "Israel as a Rogue State 299" achtergelaten:

Sonja heeft een nieuwe reactie op uw bericht "Israel as a Rogue State 299" achtergelaten:
Lees hier Shahak's boek Jewish History, Jewish Religion: The Weight of Three Thousand Years

Uri Rosenthal. Een Nederlandse Minister 12

Meneer Uri Rosenthal,

'We must expel Arabs and take their places.'

67 jaar later stelde Benny Morris:

'Ben-Gurion was right... Without the uprooting of the Palestinians a Jewish state would not have arisen here.'

'is based on many documents... most of them from the Israel Defense Forces Archives. What the new material shows is that there were far more Israeli acts of massacre than I had previously thought. To my surprise, there were also many cases of rape. In the months of April-May 1948, units of the Haganah [the pre-state defense force that was the precursor of the IDF] were given operational orders that stated explicitly that they were to uproot the villagers, expel them and destroy the villages themselves.'

En:

'From April 1948, Ben-Gurion is projecting a message of transfer. There is no explicit order of his in writing, there is no orderly comprehensive policy, but there is an atmosphere of [population] transfer. The transfer idea is in the air. The entire leadership understands that this is the idea. The officer corps understands what is required of them. Under Ben-Gurion, a consensus of transfer is created... Ben-Gurion was a transferist. He understood that there could be no Jewish state with a large and hostile Arab minority in its midst. There would be no such state. It would not be able to exist.'

ISRAELI RABBIS AND THE  ISSUE OF REAL ESTATE – An Analysis (14 December 2010) [...]
 2. The Knesset itself is pushing a proposed law that would allow Israeli municipalities to reject resident’s rights to live within their jurisdiction based on religious affiliation.
4. 52% of Jewish children go to religious schools where many of them are instructed by teachers who are in general agreement with the rabbis issuing the above “decree.” Those who go to public institutions are also taught to see Arabs as inferior and dangerous to themselves and the nation...
It has been the fate of establishment Judaism to be captured by Zionism, a deeply discriminatory political ideology. Now, with the rising power of those orthodox rabbis who would issue the above “decree” and espouse even worse as well, one must conclude that the secular Zionist ideologues and the religious fundamentalist fanatics have merged.
It goes without saying that the Palestinians in Israel, in the Occupied Territories, in refugee camps, and in exile must bear the brunt of this evolution. And they have done so from 1948 onward. Yet that is not the end of the story. Events have created another “fact on the ground.” And this is that there is now an unspoken connection between the salvation of the Palestinians and the “soul” of the Jewish religion. To all those Jews out there who have tried to ignore what is going on, remember the words of Desmond Tutu, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” If you value the future viability of your religion you must join in the effort to implement the rights of all the Palestinians. It is Israeli behavior that has made their fate one with yours.

http://stanvanhoucke.blogspot.com/2010/12/israel-as-rogue-state-299.html

Human Rights Watch: Israel preventing Palestinian development

Report by New York-based rights group cites discriminatory policies favoring Israeli settlers regarding electricity, water and roads.

By ReutersTags: Israel news Palestinians West Bank Israel settlements
Israel is preventing Palestinian development in parts of the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem while pouring funding into Jewish settlements, the Human Rights Watch group said on Sunday.
Its 166-page report released by HRW focused on Israeli policies in areas of the West Bank where the Palestinian Authority does not hold any sway under interim peace deals and in East Jerusalem, annexed to Israel after its capture in a 1967 war.

Asked about the report, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Human Rights Watch had repeatedly demonstrated an anti-Israeli bias."Israeli policies in the West Bank harshly discriminate against Palestinian residents, depriving them of basic necessities while providing lavish amenities for Jewish settlements," the New York-based organization said.
"Unfortunately over the past years a series of documented cases have shown Human Rights Watch reports to have clearly been polluted by an anti-Israel agenda," said spokesman Mark Regev.

The report highlighted cases in which it said West Bank Palestinian villages are denied the opportunity to develop electricity and running water and road infrastructure while nearby settlements had all those day-to-day amenities in place.
One case cited by the report was that of the Palestinian village of Jubbet al-Dhib, near Bethlehem. Human Rights Watch said the village of 150 people can be reached only by a dirt track and that Israel refuses to connect it to the Israeli electrical grid.
The small settlement of Sde Bar, just 350 meters away, has a dedicated paved road and all the modern amenities, the report added. Some 50 people live in the settlement.
Human Rights Watch said Israel had cited security concerns as a reason for any differential treatment.
But Carroll Bogert, a spokeswoman for the group, said Israel was carrying out "systematic discrimination merely because of (Palestinians') race, ethnicity and national origin, depriving them of electricity, water, schools and access to roads."
Some 2.4 million Palestinians live in the West Bank alongside more than 400,000 settlers.

Israel’s Discriminatory Treatment of Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories
DECEMBER 19, 2010
This report shows that Israel operates a two-tier system for the two populations of the West Bank in the large areas where it exercises exclusive control. The report is based on case studies comparing Israel’s starkly different treatment of settlements and next-door Palestinian communities in these areas. It calls on the US and EU member states and on businesses with operations in settlement areas to avoid supporting Israeli settlement policies that are inherently discriminatory and that violate international law.

Israel as a Rogue State 299

Lawrence Davidson was born in 1945 in Philadelphia PA. He grew up in Elizabeth NJ in a secular Jewish household. In 1963 he matriculated at Rutgers University for his BA. At Rutgers, Davidson developed a left leaning activist orientation to the problems facing the US in the 1960s. In 1967 he moved on to Georgetown University for his MA.

ISRAELI RABBIS AND THE  ISSUE OF REAL ESTATE – An Analysis (14 December 2010)
Part I
On Tuesday, the 7th of December, some fifty Israeli rabbis issued a “decree” forbidding their Jewish fellow citizens from “renting or selling homes or land to Arabs and other non-Jews.” The “decree” was soon endorsed by an additional 250 Israeli rabbis. That makes about 300 in all, most of orthodox persuasion and many of great influence. Just to make sure that those who have property to rent or sell know what is at stake, the same rabbis announced that those Jews who fail to obey will be “ostracized.”
There has been some protest about this. Rabbis who do not agree with this command called it a “distortion of Jewish religious law.” Well maybe. All law is open to interpretation and the present debate, such as it is, is about whose interpretation is going to be dominant. Prime Minister Netanyahu has said he thinks Jewish law commands that one should treat the stranger with kindness, and wouldn’t Jews protest if no one would rent to them? But one gets a strong whiff of hypocrisy coming from the Prime Minister on this note. After all, is it not his government that is chasing all the non-Jewish neighbors out of East Jerusalem?
Therefore, it would seem that the orthodox rabbis who issued the no rent or sell order have the upper hand. Nor is this at all surprising. Consider the following:
 1. There are real laws in Israel against the promotion of racism which are not being used in any vigorous way against these offending religious authorities. Some of them, for instance Rabbi Ovadia Yosef head of Shas, are apparently too politically powerful to be held accountable.
 2. The Knesset itself is pushing a proposed law that would allow Israeli municipalities to reject resident’s rights to live within their jurisdiction based on religious affiliation.
4. 52% of Jewish children go to religious schools where many of them are instructed by teachers who are in general agreement with the rabbis issuing the above “decree.” Those who go to public institutions are also taught to see Arabs as inferior and dangerous to themselves and the nation.
In other words, the sentiment expressed by this “decree” is not unusual. It is, in fact, uncomfortably mainstream. This sort of discrimination is a structural part of Israeli public and private practice. All Israeli governments, from the founding of the state to the present moment, have purposely discriminated against non-Jews. Often to get a job, with the classic exception of unskilled labor, one must have prior military service and that automatically disqualifies the Palestinians. It is done that way in order to disqualify them. And, a good number of landlords already discriminate against non-Jews. The command of the rabbis is just an impolitic public pronouncement of the norm. As one Israeli citizen told Al-Jazeera, “I’m sure there are a lot of people who are saying that the rabbis are just doing what everyone thinks. No one wants to live with the Arabs.” This makes perfect sense in reference to a country that has held up, as one of its highest ideals, the goal of an ethno-religiously pure citizenry.
Part II
When one starts to analyze this situation one cannot help but see it as yet another example of the fact that, through our cultures and ideologies (including religion), we create detached subjective realities for ourselves. Within them the contradictions and ironies of objective reality just conveniently melt away. In this case we find:
 1. Irony – The rabbis have forbidden Israeli Jews to rent or sell landed property to non-Jews, the bulk of whom, of course, are Palestinians. And where, pray tell, did the rabbis and their compatriots get this landed property? They forcefully took it from the very people to whom they are forbidding sale and lease. In other words, according to the rabbis, it is against their religion to rent or sell confiscated property to those from whom you have taken it.
 2. Contradiction – This entire episode once more reduces Israel as a democracy to something akin to Alabama circa 1950. For Americans and Europeans to see it otherwise can only be because illusion (through the medium of propaganda) has replaced reality. Where you have a state sanctioned segregated society, a minority that is labeled inferior and unwanted, racially tainted education and, no less, the goal of ethno-religious purity sanctified by a national god, there is no room for any sort of democracy worth the name.
Finally, we can thank the rabbis for reminding us that Israel’s very questionable policies are not confined to its illegal treatment of those in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The 20% of the population within Israel proper, the Arab Israelis, are also under threat. This means if, by some miracle, Israel does go back behind the Green Line, the fight for human decency in that country will be far from over. One will still have to battle for the rights of over one million Israelis who are on the wrong side of the religious divide.
Part III

Obama200

Who is the real Barack Obama?

By Lawrence Davidson

19 December 2010

Lawrence Davidson argues that Barack Obama’s transformation from a progressive before becoming president to an anti-progressive president is probably due to his having no firm principles in the first place, a matter that has led him to internalize the Washington political culture where expediency and opportunism are core.

When President Barack Obama ran for the presidency, his rhetoric was distinctly progressive. He is a very good orator and a superior debater and so we can be forgiven for taking the rhetoric seriously. He also often acted like a progressive up to that point. If he talks like a progressive, and acts like one, shouldn’t he be one? Here are some relevant biographical facts.

Obama the pre-presidential progressive

1. Barack Obama worked , albeit mostly in an administrative position, as a community organizer on Chicago’s south side during the years 1985-88. He was apparently dedicated and successful in this effort.

2. He spent 12 years as a lecturer in constitutional law (1992-2004) at the University of Chicago School of Law. His grounding in constitutional law is thorough.

3. As US senator he sponsored legislation to improve "transparency and accountability in federal spending" (2008).

4. And, one of his early actions as president was to streamline procedures for the Freedom of Information Act, thus making it easier to utilize (2009).

Obama the presidential anti-progressive

However, soon thereafter President Obama started to pursue anti-progressive policies. Indeed, this turnaround has been quite startling. It has made many people angry and has destroyed at least that part of his political base that lies on the left. Here is a short list of the president’s recent positions and actions:
1. He has absolutely rejected holding accountable any member of the Bush administration (or its private contractors) for actions which were in violation of both domestic and international law. Among these actions were instigating war on false pretences and pursuing policies of torture and illegal detention.

2. He has allowed (perhaps instructed) his Justice Department to promote and defend positions whichsharply undercut the First Amendment of the constitution. Specifically, the position, now upheld by the Supreme Court, that speech "coordinated" with groups designated terrorist by the US government is a felony. It is important to note that the designation of a group as "terrorist" is notoriously influenced by political pressure.

3. He has allowed the US Army to hold Private Bradley Manning, the soldier who leaked information to Wikileaks, at the Quantico, Virginia, under conditions that come very close to cruel and unusual punishment.

4. He has allowed the harassment of Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, because he made public (but did not steal) embarrassing US documents. This can be seen as the equivalent of government stalking.

5. He now has allowed (perhaps instructed) his Justice Department to prepare a conspiracy caseagainst Manning and Assange for allegedly conspiring to obtain government secrets. This is an action that could seriously curtail the process of investigative reporting in the US.

Explaining Obama’s transformation

How are we to account for such a remarkable about-face by a man who is trained as a constitutional lawyer and who was a progressive until soon after entering the Oval Office? I imagine the definitive answer to this question will have to wait for the opening of the Obama presidential library and the biographies that are even now germinating in minds of scores of historians. In the meantime, here are some observations that may help our understanding.
“In order for this change to have happened so quickly and so radically one is led to the assumption that the man’s principles were always associational and not fundamental.”
First of all, time and position can certainly change a person. It is one thing to be a constitutional law professor and another to be a professional politician. Constitutional lawyers often have consistent principles, be they conservative or liberal. It is harder, rarer, for a politician to act consistently on principle. In his relatively brief pre-presidential political career Obama did maintain his progressive orientation. But then, suddenly as president, he ceased to do so. In order for this change to have happened so quickly and so radically one is led to the assumption that the man’s principles were always associational and not fundamental. That is, Barack Obama has probably always adapted his behaviour to the environment he finds himself in and the crowd he associates with. It is when he became president that both his environment and crowd apparently changed. He simply followed suit.
Second, presidents always seem to lose touch with the reality that lay outside the nation’s capital. Obama is not unusual here. Once you hit the Oval Office, make your grand plans and pick your advisors, "groupthink" becomes a mainstay of your worldview. Obama’s world no longer has any direct feed in from constituencies that might sustain behaviour based on constitutional principles. He is now in an environment that is essentially "value-less" and dominated by a deal-making culture.
Third, concerning that culture, Obama appears to be constantly searching for political consensus. Under the circumstances, he cannot define his own principled political positions. He apparently feels forced to make constant changes according to the demands of special interests with which he believes he must compromise. Thus, the constitution ceases to be a guide and instead becomes something that one sacrifices for the sake of political agreements. If going after the criminals of the last administration means alienating conservatives with whom he seeks consensus, he lets the criminals go. The law becomes a secondary factor. If treating Manning and Assange according to the rules of law means alienating powerful Washington bureaucracies, he ignores their mistreatment. Again, too bad for the law. If cutting ties with the apartheid state of Israel means challenging the Zionist lobby, he ignores the escalating crimes of our "ally". Justice and humanness also become secondary factors. If championing the First Amendment means having to fight accusations of being "soft on terrorism", then free speech be damned. This is not political wisdom at work. This is political expediency. Nor has it provided him with a winning formula. Obama may well be a one-term president.
“This president has lost his way. And we have, at least for the foreseeable future, lost important aspects of our constitutional rights.”
And, as is usual, along with political expediency comes hypocrisy. In October 2010 Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, Conversations with Myself, was released in the US. It has a forward by President Obama. In it he praised Mandela as a man whose "sacrifice was so great that it called upon people everywhere to do what they could on behalf of human progress". That sacrifice inspired a young Barack Obama to become a political activist "coordinating" his rhetoric with that of Mandela in the fight against apartheid in South Africa.
But, of course, Mandela and the organization he led, the African National Congress, was at that time a designated "terrorist organization". Fortunately for Mr. Obama, his rhetorical support for Mandela was then protected by the First Amendment. That protection is what present Barack Obama’s Justice Department has erased. The FBI is now raiding homes and issuing subpoenas for people in Chicago and elsewhere who can fairly be described as acting just like Barack Obama in the early 1980s.

This president has lost his way. And we have, at least for the foreseeable future, lost important aspects of our constitutional rights. What does this tell us? Those who seek success in politics are rarely fundamentally principled people. They are folks whose principles are associational and that lets them move freely in a world where opportunism is thought to be survival trait. And, it would seem, it is in the modern democratic milieu that this way of politics has been brought to a fine art.

Uri Rosenthal. Een Nederlandse Minister 14

Meneer Uri Rosenthal,

'Ties with Israel are like our bond with NATO...

A hardened scientist specialized in analyzing and managing mega-crises, Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has limited patience for questions about his Jewish background and Israeli wife...He often visits Israel, where he has family in Haifa and Ashkelon. "Sometimes I come a few times a year, sometimes only once in two years." [...] Rosenthal says he believes in the Middle East policy of his predecessor, Maxime Verhagen, who now heads the Christian-Democrat party - VVD's coalition partner. Verhagen was seen as one of Israel’s staunchest supporters in Europe [...] Rosenthal compares calls to cut ties with Israel to demands to sever ties with NATO – a bond which according to researchers from the University of Twente has “determined a large part of Dutch foreign policy.”
“It’s like government support for an organization saying we should totally sever our ties with NATO, while the Dutch government feels itself a strong supportive member state,” Rosenthal said.'
