The Empire 453

"When Ronald Reagan's career in show business came to an end, he was hired to impersonate, first, a California governor and then an American president who would reduce taxes for his employers, the Southern and Western New Rich, much of whose money came from the defence industries. There is nothing unusual about this arrangement. All recent presidents have had their price-tags."
-Gore Vidal, Armageddon? (essay), 1987

Een aanzienlijk deel van de Amerikaanse politieke elite is er diep van overtuigd dat 'through the New Israel, universal righteousness will return and the world will be regenerated. God and humankind will be reconciled at last.'

Bush's Shocking Biblical Prophecy Emerges: God Wants to "Erase" Mid-East Enemies "Before a New Age Begins"

By Clive Anderson, CounterPunch. Posted May 25, 2009.

Bush explained to French Pres. Chirac that the Biblical creatures Gog and Magog were at work in the Mid-East and must be defeated. The revelation this month in GQ Magazine that Donald Rumsfeld as Defense Secretary embellished top-secret wartime memos with quotations from the Bible prompts a question. Why did he believe he could influence President Bush by that means?

The answer may lie in an alarming story about George Bush's Christian millenarian beliefs that has yet to come to light.

In 2003 while lobbying leaders to put together the Coalition of the Willing, President Bush spoke to France's President Jacques Chirac. Bush wove a story about how the Biblical creatures Gog and Magog were at work in the Middle East and how they must be defeated.

In Genesis and Ezekiel Gog and Magog are forces of the Apocalypse who are prophesied to come out of the north and destroy Israel unless stopped. The Book of Revelation took up the Old Testament prophesy:

"And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them."

Bush believed the time had now come for that battle, telling Chirac:

"This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people's enemies before a New Age begins".

The story of the conversation emerged only because the Elyse Palace, baffled by Bush's words, sought advice from Thomas Romer, a professor of theology at the University of Lausanne. Four years later, Romer gave an account in the September 2007 issue of the university's review, Allez savoir. The article apparently went unnoticed, although it was referred to in a French newspaper.

Rethinking the costs of peace
Obama must revisit the holy cow of military aid to Israel

By Josh Ruebner

25 May 2009

Josh Ruebner calls on US President Barack Obama to make US military aid to Israel consistent with the Arms Export Control Act, which limits the use of weapons given to foreign countries to “internal security” and “legitimate self-defence”, not the killing of innocent civilians and illegal occupation, as Israel is doing.

“The provision of US weapons to Israel at taxpayer expense has done nothing to bring Israelis and Palestinians closer to achieving a just and lasting peace. Rather, these weapons have had the exact opposite effect, as documented recently by Amnesty International, which pointed to US weapons as a prime factor “fueling” the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

In pledging to trim ineffective spending, President Obama declared that “there will be no sacred cows and no pet projects. All across America, families are making hard choices, and it's time their government did the same.”

By asking earlier this month for 2.775 billion US dollars in military aid to Israel in his financial year 2010 budget request, it would seem that on this important policy issue President Obama's commitment is more rhetorical than substantive. Since 1949, according to the Congressional Research Service, the United States has provided to Israel more than 100 billion dollars in military and economic assistance. In 2007, the United States and Israel signed an agreement for 30 billion dollars in additional military aid up to FY2018.

Yet the provision of US weapons to Israel at taxpayer expense has done nothing to bring Israelis and Palestinians closer to achieving a just and lasting peace. Rather, these weapons have had the exact opposite effect, as documented recently by Amnesty International, which pointed to US weapons as a prime factor “fueling” the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

According to the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, during the Bush administration, Israel killed more than 3,000 innocent Palestinian civilians, including more than 1,000 children. During its December 2008-January 2009 war on the occupied Gaza Strip alone, Israel killed nearly 1,200 non-combatants.

Boycot Israel 51

La Carrau, a famous Catalan music group, has heeded an appeal by Palestinian and pro-Palestinian groups to boycott a festival in Acre, sponsored by the ultra-right Israeli municipality. Here's their statement.

Below that, an artistic response to another attempt to "re-brand" Tel Aviv and Israel in Vienna.

"LA CARRAU IS CANCELLING ITS VISIT TO ACRE"

After having talks with the platforms promoting the boycott of Israel and with representatives of Catalan institutions and gathering as much information as possible about the events taking place on 24-25 May at Acre, Israel in which La Carrau has been invited to participate, we feel that we should make the following public statement:

LA CARRAU IS CANCELLING ITS VISIT TO ACRE

First of all we would like to make very clear our total respect for the people of Israel and their different ethnic groups and cultures. We would also like to point out that we did not intend to take part for profit; we were invited to go, not hired. Our reward, rather than economic, was to be the chance to visit some wonderful places and get a close look at ways of life that are very different from our own, due not only to their cultural characteristics but also to the obvious incongruities of a problem that is still unresolved: the imbalance of cultures and religions.

Having said this, the reasons that finally led us to take our decision were:

- That in spite of the efforts we have made to contact different people, entities and media organisations, we have not been able to determine the exact nature of the events in which we are invited to take part.

-  That we understand and agree with the arguments given by the network of platforms for the cultural boycott of Israel, as long as this boycott is not aimed at personal initiatives and only affects events orchestrated by the institutions of the Israeli state.

- That we do not wish to have anything to do with an event that could be used as propaganda by the official institutions of the state of Israel, and this seems especially likely when the promoter is the town council of Acre, which is extremely right wing and xenophobic in character.

Summer actions against the "Tel Aviv Beach" on the Danube river in Vienna: Asking for Help

The Israeli chamber of commerce in Vienna (Austria) have got the permission, for the opening of the «Tel Aviv Beach »  from the Mayor of Vienna (Häupl, socialist)  on the Viennese Donaukanal (right bank) to honor the 100 years of Tel Aviv this year. On the 10th of May the beach has been opened to the public.

In  strong protest against this obscene « Tel Aviv Beach » all pro Palestinian organisations (Women in black, the anti-imperialist movement, the Austrian -Arab associations, moslem organisations,) together opened the «Gaza Beach » on the left bank of the Donaukanal.

The actions planned for the whole summer will disturb the « Israeli beach ambience. »  There will be a strong moment on the weekend of 27/28 june with the street theater from France playing  « Checkpoint » in featuring the brutal daily oppression in the OT and Gaza by the Israeli occupying army. There is also a military vehicle transformed into an Israeli prison with photos and films from the last barbaric Israeli offensive in Gaza.

We would like people of other countries to participate in the «checkpoint » play, which is mostly with gestures. It would be great if some people from other European countries could come on that weekend or on others:  the 20 June, 4 July and 8 August. The lodging of the activists will be assured by the organisation.

De Israelische Terreur 867

Next week, thousands of New Yorkers will be doing the hora on 5th Avenue in the annual Salute to Israel Parade. Their website calls it, “the largest event in the world celebrating the Anniversary of Israel’s Independence. As we look towards the 61st Anniversary year, we will once again be joined by 100,000 participants, stepping off on Fifth Avenue, cheered on by an expected one million spectators.

Parade spectators will watch a sea of blue and white, kachol v’lavan, as community leaders, American and Israeli dignitaries, celebrities, floats and marching bands come together with spirit, joy and enthusiasm.”

I was wondering what Israeli journalist Gideon Levy would think of this. He would be embarrassed. I was on KALW in San Francisco with him on Friday where he spoke of the way the Israeli and our press speak of a “conflict ” but not a 60 year occupation of Palestinian land and society. How many traipsing down 5th Avenue every think of that?

Israel’s leaders of think of that. And they are determined to keep it going:

LBN: NETANYAHU DEFIES OBAMA ON ISRAELI SETTLEMENT FREEZE:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday rebuffed U.S. calls to impose a freeze on all settlement activity in the occupied West Bank, setting the stage for friction with President Barack Obama.

AMY TEIBEL, Associated Press Writer – Sun May 24,

JERUSALEM – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel will continue to build homes in existing West Bank settlements, defying U.S. calls to halt settlement growth.
The comments came days after a contentious visit to the White House and threatened to widen a growing rift with the Obama administration. The U.S. considers the settlements — home to some 280,000 Israelis — obstacles to peace since they are built on captured territory the Palestinians claim for a future state.

FAR RIGHT WANTS “LOYALTY OATH”

AP: JERUSALEM – An ultranationalist party headed by the Israeli foreign minister said Monday it has prepared legislation linking citizenship to an oath of allegiance, in what amounted to a threat to the country’s Arabs to swear loyalty to the Jewish state or risk severe punishment.

The bill follows a separate proposal Sunday by the same party that would make it illegal for Arabs to mourn the “catastrophe” (NABKA)— the term Palestinians use to describe their defeat and exile in the war that surrounded Israel’s founding.

Gepubliceerd: 25 mei 2009 14:28 | Gewijzigd: 25 mei 2009 14:28

Ministers okay bill banning Nakba Day
By Tomer Zarchin and Jack Khoury

The ministerial committee for legislation yesterday approved a bill that would make it illegal to treat Israel's establishment as a day of mourning, effectively banning Israeli Arabs' commemoration of Nakba Day. The proposal, which was initiated by a member of Yisrael Beiteinu, sparked charges that such a prohibition would infringe on freedom of expression and increase alienation and extremism rather than encouraging cohesiveness.

The private member's bill was proposed by MK Alex Miller and calls for a violators. It will be brought before the Knesset for a preliminary reading. The explanatory notes accompanying the bill call for "harsh punishment for those who take advantage of the democratic and enlightened nature of the State of Israel to bring it down from within."

"I opposed the law because I believe that it could impair freedom of expression and freedom of protest and achieve the opposite goal - increasing alienation and strengthening extremists, who are on the margins of Arab society," said Social Affairs Minister Isaac Herzog. "The law won over the representatives of Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu because it's easy to support, their reasoning being that we must protect ourselves from these elements. I don't believe in such legislation."
