Europa Vernietigt Zichzelf (8)

Zaterdag 5 november 2022 berichtte de Washington Post dat ‘The Biden administration is privately encouraging Ukraine’s leaders to signal an openness to negotiate with Russia and drop their public refusal to engage in peace talks unless President Vladimir Putin is removed from power, according to people familiar with the discussions.

The request by American officials is not aimed at pushing Ukraine to the negotiating table, these people said. Rather, they called it a calculated attempt to ensure the government in Kyiv maintains the support of other nations facing constituencies wary of fueling a war for many years to come.

The discussions illustrate how complex the Biden administration’s position on Ukraine has become, as U.S. officials publicly vow to support Kyiv with massive sums of aid “for as long as it takes” while hoping for a resolution to the conflict that over the past eight months has taken a punishing toll on the world economy and triggered fears of nuclear war.

While U.S. officials share Ukraine’s assessment that Putin, for now, isn’t serious about negotiations, they acknowledge that Zelensky’s ban on talks with him has generated concern in parts of Europe, Africa and Latin America. ‘Ukraine fatigue is a real thing,’

met andere woorden:

The request by US officials is not aimed at pushing Ukraine to the negotiating table but an attempt to ensure the government in Kyiv maintains the support of other nations facing constituencies wary of fueling a war for many years to come.

'The Unwinding' is ‘A riveting examination of a nation in crisis, from one of the finest political journalists of our generation,’ en laat gewone Amerikanen aan het woord over de zogeheten ‘Amerikaanse democratie’ die ‘is beset by a sense of crisis. Seismic shifts during a single generation have created a country of winners and losers, allowing unprecedented freedom while rending the social contract, driving the political system to the verge of breakdown, and setting citizens adrift to find new paths forward. In The Unwinding, George Packer, author of The Assassins' Gate: America in Iraq, tells the story of the United States over the past three decades in an utterly original way, with his characteristically sharp eye for detail and gift for weaving together complex narratives.

The Unwinding journeys through the lives of several Americans, including Dean Price, the son of tobacco farmers, who becomes an evangelist for a new economy in the rural South; Tammy Thomas, a factory worker in the Rust Belt trying to survive the collapse of her city; Jeff Connaughton, a Washington insider oscillating between political idealism and the lure of organized money; and Peter Thiel, a Silicon Valley billionaire who questions the Internet's significance and arrives at a radical vision of the future. Packer interweaves these intimate stories with biographical sketches of the era's leading public figures, from Newt Gingrich to Jay-Z, and collages made from newspaper headlines, advertising slogans, and song lyrics that capture the flow of events and their undercurrents.

The Unwinding portrays a superpower in danger of coming apart at the seams, its elites no longer elite, its institutions no longer working, its ordinary people left to improvise their own schemes for success and salvation. Packer's novelistic and kaleidoscopic history of the new America is his most ambitious work to date.

Al meteen in de Proloog stelt Packer:

No one can say when the unwinding began — when the coil that held Americans together in its secure and sometimes stifling grip first gave way. Like any great change, the unwinding began at countless times, in countless ways — and at some moment the country, always the same country, crossed a line of history and became irretrievably different.

If you were born around 1960 or afterwards, you have spent your adult life in the vertigo of that unwinding. You watched structures that had been in place before your birth collapse like pillars of salt across the vast visible landscape — the farms of the Carolina Piedmont, the factories of the Mahoning Valley, Florida subdivisions, California schools. And other things, harder to see but no less vital in supporting the order of everyday life, changed beyond recognition — ways and means in Washington caucus rooms, taboos on New York trading desks, manners and morals everywhere. When the norms that made the old institutions useful began to unwind, and the leaders abandoned their posts, the Roosevelt Republic that had reigned for almost half a century came undone. The void was filled by the default force in American life, organized money.

The unwinding is nothing new. There have been unwindings every generation or two: the fall to earth of the Founders’ heavenly Republic in a noisy marketplace of quarrelsome factions; the war that tore the United States apart and turned them from plural to singular; the crash that laid waste to the business of America, making way for a democracy of bureaucrats and everymen. Each decline brought renewal, each implosion released energy, out of each unwinding came a new cohesion.

Packer wijst er op dat ‘Winning and losing are all-American games, and in the unwinding winners win bigger than ever, floating away like bloated dirigibles (opgeblazen ballonnen. svh), and losers have a long way to fall before they hit bottom, and sometimes they never do,’ maar dat de het verliezen zowel als de vrijheid van de winnaars:

leaves you on your own. More Americans than ever before live alone, but even a family can exist in isolation, just managing to survive in the shadow of a huge military base without a soul to lend a hand. A shiny new community can spring up overnight miles from anywhere, then fade away just as fast. An old city can lose its industrial foundation and two-thirds of its people, while all its mainstays — churches, government, businesses, charities, unions — fall like building flats in a strong wind, hardly making a sound.

Alone on a landscape without solid structures, Americans have to improvise their own destinies, plot their own stories of success and salvation… As these obscure Americans find their way in the unwinding, they pass alongside new monuments where the old institutions once stood — the outsized lives of their most famous countrymen, celebrities who only grow more exalted as other things recede. These icons sometimes occupy the personal place of household gods, and they offer themselves as answers to the riddle of how to live a good or better life.

In the unwinding, everything changes and nothing lasts, except for the voices, American voices, open, sentimental, angry, matter-of-fact; inflected with borrowed ideas, God, TV, and the dimly remembered past — telling a joke above the noise of the assembly line, complaining behind window shades drawn against the world, thundering justice to a crowded park or an empty chamber, closing a deal on the phone, dreaming aloud late at night on a front porch as trucks rush by in the darkness.

Lawrence de onvermijdelijke vraag op ‘Can you make a land virgin by killing off its aborigines?’

At night, when the streets of your cities and villages are silent, and you think them deserted, they will throng with the returning hosts that once filled them and still love this beautiful land. The white man will never be alone. Let him be just and deal kindly with my people. For the dead are not powerless. Dead, did I say? There is no death. Only a change of worlds.

Iets soortgelijks schreef de Britse auteur Lawrence:

Those that are pushed out of life in chagrin come back unappeased, for revenge. A curious thing about the Spirit of Place is the fact that no place exerts its full influence upon a newcomer until the old inhabitant is dead or absorbed. So America. While the Red Indian existed in fairly large numbers, the new colonials were in a great measure immune from the daemon, or demon, of America. The moment the last nuclei of Red life break up in America, then the white men will have to reckon with the full force of the demon on the continent. At present the demon of the place and the unappeased ghosts of the dead Indians act within the unconscious or under-conscious soul of the white American, causing the great American grouch, the Orestes-like frenzy of restlessness in the Yankee soul, the inner malaise which amounts almost to madness, sometimes.

Het was tegen het eind van zijn leven dat John Steinbeck in een brief aan de voormalige Democratische presidentskandidaat Adlai Stevenson schreef over de ‘creeping, all pervading, nerve-gas of immorality which starts in the nursery and does not stop before it reaches the highest offices, both corporate and governmental,’ en over een ‘nervous restlessness, a hunger, a thirst, a yearning for something unknown — perhaps morality, waaraan zijn landgenoten kampten.

We can stand anything God and Nature can throw at us save only plenty. If I wanted to destroy a nation, I would give it too much and I would have it on its knees, miserable, greedy and sick… Someone has to reinspect our system and that soon. We can’t expect to raise our children to be good and honourable men when the city, the state, the government, the corporation all offer the highest rewards for chicanery and dishonesty. On all levels it is rigged, Adlai.

It’s a fact, not an analysis, not even an opinion — the  ‘free and open international order’ promoted since 1945 by the United States has cost the lives of 20 to 30 million people throughout the world. No President, whoever he may be, has managed to slow the rhythm of this killing machine.

in the white American soul, a dual feeling about the Indian. First was Franklin's feeling, that a wise Providence no doubt intended the extirpation of these savages. Then came Crevecoeur's contradictory feeling about the noble Red Man and the innocent life of the wigwam.

Er bestaat tegelijkertijd een ‘desire to extirpate the Indian’ én ‘the contradictory desire to glorify him. Both are rampant still, today. The bulk of the white people who live in contact with the Indian today would like to see this Red brother exterminated; not only for the sake of grabbing his land, but because of the silent, invisible, but deadly hostility between the spirit of the two races. The minority of whites intellectualize the Red Man and laud him to the skies. But this minority of whites is mostly a high-brow minority with a big grouch against its own whiteness,’ aldus D.H. Lawrence, die zich afvroeg ‘how can any man be free without a soul of his own, that he believes in and won't sell at any price?’

men are free when they are in a living homeland, not when they are straying and breaking away. Men are free when they are obeying some deep, inward voice of religious belief. Obeying from within. Men are free when they belong to a living, organic, believing community, active in fulfilling some unfulfilled, perhaps unrealized purpose. Not when they are escaping to some wild west. The most unfree souls go west, and shout of freedom. Men are freest when they are most unconscious of freedom. The shout is a rattling of chains, always was. Men are not free when they are doing just what they like. The moment you can do just what you like, there is nothing you care about doing. Men are only free when they are doing what the deepest self likes.

It is the myth of Amerika.' D.H. Lawrence:

Liberty in America has meant so far the breaking away from all dominion. The true liberty will only begin when Americans discover IT, and process possibly to fulfill IT. IT being the deepest whole self of man, the self in its wholeness, not idealistic halfness. [...] We are free only so long as we obey. When we run counter, and think we will do as we like, we just flee around like Orestes pursued by the Eumenides.

The root of all evil is that we all want this spiritual gratification, this flow, this apparent heightening of life, this knowledge, this valley of many-colored grass, even grass and light prismatically decomposed, giving ecstasy. We want all this without resistance. We want it continually. And this is the root of all evil in us. [...] And evil breeds evil, more and more.

In een essay over Herman Melville's Typee and Omoo wijst Lawrence erop dat ‘We can't go back, and Melville couldn't. Much as he hated the civilized humanity he knew. Het couldn't go back to the savages; he wanted to, he tried to, and he couldn’t,’ aangezien The truth of the matter is, one cannot go back. [...] Melville couldn't go back: and Gaugain couldn't really go back: and I know now that I could never go back. It is one's destiny inside one.’

Lawrence:

No men are so evil today as the idealists, and no women half so evil as your earnest women, who feels herself a power for good. It is inevitable. After a certain point, the ideal goes dead and rotten. The old ideal becomes in itself an impure thing of evil. Charity becomes pernicious, the spirit itself becomes foul. The meek are evil. The pure in heart have base, subtle revulsions: like Dostoevsky's Idiot. The whole Sermon on the Mount becomes a litany of white vice.

it is a great book, a very great book, the greatest book of the sea ever written. It moves awe in the soul. The terrible fatality. Fatality. Doom. Doom! Doom! Doom! Something seems to whisper it in the very dark trees of America. Doom! Doom of what? Doom of our white day. We are doomed, doomed. And the doom is in America. The doom of our white day. Ah, well, if my day is doomed, and I am doomed with my day, it is something greater than I which dooms me, so I accept my doom as a sign of the greatness which is more than I am. Melville knew. He knew his race was doomed. His white soul, doomed. His great white epoch, doomed. Himself, doomed. The idealist, doomed. The spirit, doomed. The reversion. 'Not so much bound to any haven ahead, as rushing from all havens astern.' That great horror of ours! It is our civilization rushing from all havens astern. The last ghastly hunt. The White Whale. What then is Moby Dick? He is the deepest blood-being of the white race; he is our deepest blood-nature. And he is hunted , hunted, hunted by the maniacal fanaticism of our white mental consciousness. We want to hunt him down. To subject him to our will. And in this maniacal conscious hunt of ourselves we get dark races and pale to help us, red, yellow, and black, east and west, Quaker and fire-worshipper, we get them all to help us in this ghastly maniacal hunt which is our doom and our suicide.

And the Pequod was the ship of the white American soul. She sank, taking with her negro and Indian and Polynesian, Asiatic and Quaker and good, businesslike Yankees and Ishmael: she sank all the lot of them,’ en If the Great White Whale sank the ship of the Great White Soul in 1851, what's been happening ever since? Post-mortem effects, presumably.’

One begins to sense a wide gap between the fantasies Americans live by and the realities they live in. Americans know from an early age how they're supposed to look when happy and what they're supposed to do or buy to be happy. But for some reason their fantasies are unrealizable and leave them disappointed and embittered.

And If the Tragic Has Deserted Us?

We are currently witnessing — and ignoring — the sixth great extinction since the advent of life on earth. This is not a hysterical cry of some druid; it is cold scientific fact.

That is to say, roughly one species goes extinct every hour.' Slechts één voorbeeld: 'of the 9,946 known bird species, 70 percent are declining in number.’
