Arthur Schopenhauer and Al Qaeda

On the one-year anniversary of the Afghan war, in October 2002, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld told CNN, "The Taliban are gone. The Al Qaeda are gone." And now Rumsfeld is gone and all the others of the Bush-gang, only the Taliban and Al Qaeda are still here for many years to come. No one can beat everyone.

Arthur Schopenhauer put it this way:

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

CIA report into shoring up Afghan war support in Western Europe, 11 Mar 2010
From WikiLeaks

Release date
March 26, 2010

This classified CIA analysis from March outlines possible PR strategies to shore up public support in Germany and France for a continued war in Afghanistan. After the Dutch government fell on the issue of Dutch troops in Afghanistan last month, the CIA became worried that similar events could happen in the countries that post the third and fourth largest troop contingents to the ISAF mission. The proposed PR strategies focus on pressure points that have been identified within these countries. For France it is the sympathy of the public for Afghan refugees and women. For Germany it is the fear of the consequences of defeat (drugs, more refugees, terrorism) as well as for Germany's standing in NATO. The memo is a recipe for the targeted manipulation of public opinion in two NATO ally countries, written by the CIA. It is classified as Confidential/No Foreign Nationals.

Report: US finds mineral riches in Afghanistan

Associated Press

Monday, 14 June 2010

A team of US geologists and Pentagon officials has discovered vast mineral wealth in Afghanistan, conceivably enough to turn the scarred and impoverished country into one of the world's most lucrative mining centres, The New York Times reports.

"There is stunning potential here," General David Petraeus, commander of the United States Central Command, told the paper in a report published today. "There are a lot of ifs, of course, but I think potentially it is hugely significant."
