Andy Goldsworthy

Andy Goldsworthy is een beeldend kunstenaar wiens werken soms niet meer dan enkele seconden bestaan, zoals zijn rode rivierstenen die tot poeder vermalen even door de lucht dwarrelen, steeds veranderende vormen makend. Een van zijn boeken heet: 'Tijd.' Alles in het werk van Goldsworthy toont het mysterie van verandering, tijdelijkheid, het onbestendige. Dat maakt zijn werk ook zo onweerstaanbaar fascinerend. Hij fotografeerde ooit eens zijn bevroren schaduw in het gras. De zon had zijn contouren tijdelijk op de grond vastgelegd. Over hem is geschreven: 'Andy Goldsworthy creates sculptures in the landscape, using nature as the raw material and subject of his work. This exhibition brings together a series of fifteen colour photographs of these works, made between 1977 and 1979. Goldsworthy uses materials, from stones and twigs to snow and icicles, to create works that offer the viewer a heightened experience of the energy and patterning of the natural world. Photographs often provide the only lasting evidence of the artist’s reworking of nature, preserving ''the optimum moment, the moment when I had not just made the piece, but understood the piece.'' Place is found by walking, direction determined by weather and season. I take the opportunities each day offers: if it is snowing, I work with snow, at leaf-fall it will be with leaves; a blown-over tree becomes a sourse of twigs and branches... I stop at a place or pick up a material because I feel that there is something to be discovered. Here is where I can learn... Movement, change, light, growth and decay are the lifeblood of nature, the energies that I try to tap through my work... The energy and space around a material are as important as the energy and space within. The weather- rain, sun, snow, hail, mist, calm- is that external space made visible. When I touch a rock, I am touching and working the space around it. It is not independant of its surroundings and the way it sits tells me how it came to be there. De Volkskrant

Dit is het resultaat van het werk van Egyptische beulen. Vandaag brengt de Volkskrant op pagina 4 een kort bericht over een man die in opdracht van de Amerikaanse regering in Egypte werd gemarteld: 'De Italiaanse gerechtelijke instanties verdenken het CIA-team ervan Nasr, ook bekend als Abu Omar, in een Milanese straat te hebben opgepakt en hem voor ondervraging naar Egypte te hebben overgevlogen.' Geen woord over martelingen, nee opgepakt en overgevlogen voor 'ondervraging.' Ik zou denken: als een zogeheten democratische bondgenoot burgers kidnapt om ze te martelen dan is dat in een rechtstaat absolute voorpagina-nieuws, zeker als 'Europa 22 CIA-agenten [wil] aanhouden,' die volgens justitie in Italie bij deze misdaad betrokken zijn geweest. Nee dus. Wel plaatst de Volkskrant aan de vooravond van de grootste christelijke feestdag op de voorpagina de irrelevante prive mening van de officier van justitie Frits van Stralen dat de islamiet 'Mohammed B. een lafaard, een loser is.' Waarom deze kwalificaties relevanter nieuws zijn dan het nieuws over de CIA-misdaad blijft tamelijk onduidelijk. We hebben hier waarschijnlijk weer te maken met het provincialisme waaraan de Nederlandse kranten steeds meer lijden nu de oplagecijfers blijven dalen.

Mieke van der Wey

Mieke van der Wey is presentatrice bij de TROS en de NCRV. Ze presenteert ondermeer op zaterdagochtend samen met Peter de Bie de 'Tros Nieuwsshow.' Ze presenteert luchtige programma's en doet dat leuk. Ze heeft de charme van een grote blonde vriendelijke Hollandse vrouw. Onlangs beklaagde ze zich erover dat ze nooit een aanbod heeft gekregen om zwaardere programma's te presenteren. Duidelijk uit haar woorden werd dat Mieke van der Wey niet beseft dat ze als tv-presentatrice gekozen is allereerst vanwege haar uiterlijk. In Nederland doet zich het rare verschijnsel voor dat presentatoren en presentatrices denken dat als ze een amusementsprogramma kunnen presenteren ze dan alles kunnen. Vanochtend werd in haar radioprogramma de 'Tros Nieuwsshow' Arend-Jan Boekestijn geinterviewd, een ideoloog die als historicus verbonden is aan de Universiteit van Utrecht. Arend-Jan maakte zich in het verleden onsterfelijk belachelijk door op zeer hoge toon in de media te beweren dat Saddam Hoessein over massavernietgingswapens beschikte en dus van zijn troon moest worden gestoten. Deze onzin leverde hem bij de Speaker Academy meteen een plaats op in de prijscategorie 500 tot 2000 euro. Wonderlijk genoeg wordt Boekestijn na zijn brevet van onvermogen nog steeds in programma's uitgenodigd, iets dat in angelsaksische landen met een echte journalistieke traditie nooit zou gebeuren. Ditmaal ontpopte de historicus zich als fel voorstander van de militaire missie naar Afghanistan, want anders komt Al Qaida terug en dan wordt het Westen vernietigd, aldus de suggestie achter zijn beangstigend betoog. Bij gebrek aan feitenkennis lieten de programmamakers Arend-Jan maar doorkwekken. Doordat hij geen weerwoord kreeg, raakte hij opnieuw zo opgewonden dat hij de merkwaardigste dingen begon te zeggen. Op een bepaald moment verklaarde hij dat de Duitsers hun verantwoordelijkheid niet nemen. Ze weigeren troepen naar Afghanistan te sturen omdat 'sinds 1945 de Duitsers het monster van Frankenstein iets te effectief hebben gedemonteerd. Ik bedoel er is geen agressie meer in een Duitser te krijgen, he,' aldus de teleurgestelde Boekestijn. Een opmerking die Mieke van der Wey beantwoordde met: 'Hahaha, ja dat is jammer eigenlijk, ja.' Dat Mieke van der Wey niet gevraagd wordt voor zwaardere kost is verstandig. Als ze dat nou zelf eens besefte, dan zou ze minder teleurgesteld klinken.

Israel's Apartheidsmuur

Dit zijn activisten van de Israelische Vredesbeweging Gush Shalom die uit protest de Israelische Apartheidsmuur op Palestijns gebied beklimmen. Bij Democracy Now kunt u een debat lezen tussen de Amerikaanse hoogleraren Noam Chomsky en Alan Dershowitz. Eerst genoemde staat kritisch ten opzichte van de expansiepolitiek van Israel, de laatste behoort tot de pro-Israel lobby. 'We bring you a debate between Noam Chomsky and Alan Dershowitz on the question, "Israel and Palestine After Disengagement: Where Do We Go From Here?" Dershowitz argued for a political solution based on an Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian towns and a mobile security fence to protect Israel's borders, while Chomsky insisted that the main obstacle to peace in the region is U.S.-Israeli insistence on maintaining settlements and rejecting minimal Palestinian rights. Milan - A Milan court has issued a European arrest warrant for 22 CIA agents suspected of kidnapping an Egyptian cleric from Italy’s financial capital in 2003, Prosecutor Armando Spataro said on Friday. Milan magistrates suspect a CIA team grabbed Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr off a Milan street and flew him for interrogation to Egypt, where he said he was tortured. Prosecutors asked the Italian Justice Ministry last month to seek the extradition of the suspects from the United States, but Justice Minister Roberto Castelli has not yet decided whether to act on the request. A European Union warrant is automatically valid across the 25-nation bloc and does not require approval of any government. The warrant was agreed by the European Union in the wake of the Sept 11 attacks on the United States in 2001 and was hailed as a key part of the bloc’s fight against terrorism. Het privatiseren van de oorlog heeft ook negatieve kanten zo ontdekt de Amerikaanse staat nu. 'US Lawsuit Could Dent Global War-Contractor Boom. Reuters. Washington - An unprecedented lawsuit stemming from the gruesome killing of four American civilians in Iraq is slowly making its way through the US legal system, closely watched by companies estimated to field up to 100,000 contractors alongside the US military. Lawyers and military experts say the case highlights legal gray zones, a lack of regulation and little oversight of a booming global industry believed to bring in more than $150 billion annually. Civilian military contractors now perform scores of functions once restricted to regular troops, and a trend toward "privatizing war" has been accelerating steadily. The suit was brought by the families of four civilian contractors shot last year by Iraqi insurgents, who burned their bodies and hung the charred remains from a bridge across the Euphrates river in the city of Falluja. The four - Stephen Helveston, Mike Teague, Jerko Zovko and Wesley Batalona - worked for Blackwater Security Consulting LLC, one of the companies fielding armed civilians in Iraq under contract with the Pentagon. All four had military experience and signed contracts assuming all risks and waiving their right to sue. The suit against Blackwater says the company broke explicit terms of its contract with the men by sending them to escort a food convoy in unarmored cars, without heavy machine guns, proper briefings, advance notice or pre-mission reconnaissance, in teams that were understaffed and lacked even a map. "Sending four men out on the security mission instead of the required six essentially took away the team's ability to defend itself," the suit says. "Not having one driver, one navigator and a rear-gunner with a 180 degree field of fire, the team never had a chance ... the insurgents were literally able to walk up behind the vehicles and open fire upon them at close range."'
