Israel’s hidden friends ramp up campaign to distract Palestine activists from core issues

Amid signs that a fringe group of self-proclaimed “Jewish anti-Zionist” pretenders are planning to distract attention from the accelerating theft and colonization of occupied Palestinian territories and the deadly siege of Gaza, Redress Information & Analysis advises Palestine activists to steer clear of these pretenders and not to engage with them in any shape or form.

On New Year’s Day we published an article in which we highlighted the problem of false friends in Britain’s Palestine solidarity movement and urged genuine activists to steer clear of them. We singled out two notorious time wasters, Tony Greenstein and Mark Elf, although there are about a dozen others that we know about but shall refrain from naming for the time being.

In the article, we said that Greenstein, Elf and others in their camp seem to believe that being Jewish and claiming to be anti-Zionist entitles them to hijack the Palestine solidarity movement and set its agenda.

We also said that our observation of the behaviour of Greenstein, Elf and their ilk over many years has led us to conclude that another of their motives, in addition to hijacking the Palestinian solidarity movement, was to distract genuine supporters of the Palestinian cause with endless, tedious and time-wasting arguments that have nothing whatsoever to do with the Israeli occupation, land theft, colonization, Zionism or apartheid.

On 2 January one Gerald Downing provided us with an example of the kind of time-wasting distractions we mentioned. In an email entitled “Defend Jewish anti-Semites” (sic) and sent to various people, he called for a “coordinated response” to what he described as our “appalling anti-Semitic campaign” against Greenstein, Elf and the other time wasters. Using the well-known Israeli tactic of employing false accusations of “anti-Semitism” to bludgeon criticism, Downing said:

The hyperactive Downing followed this up with another email to unknown recipients, laughably describing Greenstein and the time wasters as “principled anti-Zionists” and reiterating the need for a Facebook campaign. It said:

Notice that Downing failed to mention something else we said. In our article of 1 January, we stated: “If Greenstein, Elf and others in their camp wish to campaign against Zionism and racism, then we should welcome this and wish them good luck. But let them do it in parallel to us, not together with us."

We suspect that this omission is deliberate, or perhaps it is to be expected from people whose principal preoccupation is to make Jewish issues the centrepiece of the Palestinian struggle – not the occupation, not the ever-growing settlements, not the deadly siege of Gaza, not the right of return, but defending “Jewish anti-Semites”, the anti-Semites of Downing’s fertile imagination!

Shame on you, Gerald Downing, and shame on everyone who collaborates with you and your like!

As for our true friends in the struggle, Jewish and non-Jewish, those who will not tolerate any deviation from the urgent need to stay focused on the struggle for justice for the Palestinian people, our advise remains this: steer clear of time-wasting pretenders like Greenstein, Elf, Downing and their ilk. Do not engage with them or else they will drag you down to the subterranean hovel they inhabit.

De Filosemiet en de Antisemiet 6

In zijn studie After Auschwitz waarschuwt de gerespecterde joods Amerikaanse geleerde Richard Rubenstein voor het feit dat 'recalling Jewish virtues and contributions to humanity's spiritual treasury ... is inevitable in a time of reconciliation, but it may have about it more than a little fattening of the sacrificial lamb for another round of slaughter. In any event, philo-Semitism is as unrealistic and pernicious as anti-Semitism, for it destroys our most precious attribute, our simple humanity. Jews are not, nor are they obliged to be, paragons of virtue or models of holiness. To expect us to be more than other men, to pay us the unwanted and unasked-for complement that we are, is an unintended cruelty but a cruelty nonetheless.'

Inderdaad, het 'filosemitisme is even onrealistisch en verderfelijk als het antisemitisme, want het vernietigt onze meest waardevolle eigenschap, onze aangeboren menselijkheid.' Maar juist die onvervreemdbare 'menselijkheid' kan de filosemiet niet erkennen. Voor hem spelen de jood en de Arabier alleen maar een rol, ze bevredigen de behoefte van de filosemiet om zichzelf een identiteit te vormen. De filosemiet ziet geen mens, nee, hij ziet een jood, of een Arabier, of wie dan ook die op een bepaald moment het slachtoffer kan zijn om zo zijn eigen schrikbarende leegte te camoufleren.

Een jaar of twintig geleden zei de joods-Israelische auteur Amos Oz de volgende wijze woorden tegen mij:

‘Weet u, vele tragische helden in de literatuur beseffen niet dat ze tragisch zijn. Het is de lezer die beseft dat ze tragische helden zijn. Othello realiseert zich pas op het absolute einde van de tragedie dat hij tragisch is en met dat besef sterft hij. Op de vraag waar Sharons drang vandaan komt om met vlaggen te zwaaien en wat al niet meer, is het enige juiste antwoord: onzekerheid. Hij moet zichzelf keer op keer eraan helpen herinneren dat hij en zijn volk niet langer meer slaven zijn. De diepte van de Joodse onzekerheid is iets wat buitengewoon moeilijk te begrijpen is voor buitenstaanders. Na al die eeuwen kun je niet anders dan jezelf afvragen: wat mankeer ik? Zoiets is een menselijke reactie. Je vraagt je niet langer af: wat mankeert mijn vijand, wat mankeert degenen die mij vervolgen, wat mankeert de antisemieten, wat mankeert die christenen? Nee, je begint je af te vragen: wat mankeer ík toch dat me dit altijd overkomt? Het gevolg is dat je wilt bewijzen dat jij niet bent wat zij denken dat je bent. In het geval van Sharon is het waarschijnlijk een niet volledig bewuste emotionele drang om te reageren op een duizenden jaren oude bewering dat de Jood een lafaard is, een zwakkeling die zichzelf niet kan verdedigen, een soort muis die altijd ontsnapt en zich verschuilt. Sharon wil laten zien dat hij geen muis is, maar een leeuw. Men kan dit emotionele complex niet begrijpen zonder de Joodse geschiedenis in gedachten te houden. Het feit dat de tegenstanders Palestijnen zijn en dat die onder een Israëlische bezetting leven en zij nu erg zwak zijn, is daarbij van geen belang. Je kijkt naar je vijand en ziet in hem al je vroegere vijanden. In de mythologie van Bertolt Brecht, die bijzonder ontroerend is maar tegelijkertijd volstrekt irreëel, worden alle slachtoffers automatisch bloedbroeders, die op grond van hun slachtofferschap een gevoel van saamhorigheid, solidariteit en medeleven hebben. In de werkelijkheid vertonen slachtoffers de neiging om onderling een grote vijandigheid te ontwikkelen, omdat ze in andere slachtoffers de onderdrukkers in vermomming zien. Dat gebeurt op individueel niveau tussen zeer ongelukkige mensen en op collectief niveau tussen onderdrukte en onderdrukkende volkeren. Vergeet niet dat minister Sharon en een deel van de joods-Israëlische bevolking nakomelingen zijn van mensen die in de christelijke wereld werden gehaat, vervolgd en veracht. En zonder dit telkens in gedachten te houden zal men nooit begrijpen wat Israël werkelijk beweegt, zowel ten goede als ten kwade. Het is een sentimentele veronderstelling om ervan uit te gaan dat iedereen die zelf slachtoffer is geweest zich voorbeeldig gaat gedragen zodra die eenmaal aan de macht komt. Uw vraag wat er dan overblijft van de Verlichtingsgedachte, die ervan uitgaat dat de mens door kennis en ervaring leert, zou ik willen beantwoorden met de opmerking dat dit een christelijke vertekening is. Vele heiligen werden aan het kruis genageld, toch betekent het niet dat daardoor iedere gekruisigde ook meteen een heilige is. De nazi’s hebben hun slachtoffers in de gaskamers niet besproeid met een moreel schoonmaakmiddel, maar met Zyklon B-gas. Degenen die de vernietigingskampen overleefden zijn niet per definitie gevoeligere en fatsoenlijkere mensen. Sommige overlevenden zijn humaner en rechtvaardiger geworden, andere slachtoffers wraakzuchtiger en onbetrouwbaarder. Beide reacties zijn volstrekt menselijk. Het is buitengewoon onnozel om aan te nemen dat iemand die veel geleden heeft een beter mens wordt, domweg omdat hij of zij geleden heeft. Dat is geenszins het geval. De westerse vooruitgangsgedachte is wat dat betreft onhoudbaar. Ik zeg dit als scepticus.'

The Iron Wall By Uri Avneri SOMETHING ODD, almost bizarre, is going on in Egypt these days. About 1400 activists from all over the world gathered there on their way to the Gaza Strip. On the anniversary of the “Cast Lead” War, they intended to participate in a non-violent demonstration against the ongoing blockade, which makes the life of 1.5 million inhabitants of the Strip intolerable. At the same time, protest demonstrations were to take place in many countries. In Tel-Aviv, too, a big protest was planned. The “monitoring committee” of the Arab citizens of Israel was to organize an event on the Gaza border. When the international activists arrived in Egypt, a surprise awaited them. The Egyptian government forbade their trip to Gaza. Their buses were held up at the outskirts of Cairo and turned back. Individual protesters who succeeded in reaching the Sinai in regular buses were taken off them. The Egyptian security forces conducted a regular hunt for the activists. The angry activists besieged their embassies in Cairo. On the street in front of the French embassy, a tent camp sprang up which was soon surrounded by the Egyptian police. American protesters gathered in front of their embassy and demanded to see the ambassador. Several protesters who are over 70 years old started a hunger strike. Everywhere, the protesters were held up by Egyptian elite units in full riot gear, while red water cannon trucks were lurking in the background. Protesters who tried to assemble in Cairo’s central Tahrir (liberation) Square were mishandled. In the end, after a meeting with the wife of the president, a typical Egyptian solution was found: one hundred activists were allowed to reach Gaza. The rest remained in Cairo, bewildered and frustrated. WHILE THE demonstrators were cooling their heels in the Egyptian capital and trying to find ways to vent their anger, Binyamin Netanyahu was received in the president’s palace in the heart of the city. His hosts went to great lengths to laud and celebrate his contribution to peace, especially the ‘freeze” of settlement activity in the West Bank, a phony gesture that does not include East Jerusalem. Hosni Mubarak and Netanyahu have met in the past – but not in Cairo. The Egyptian president always insisted that the meetings take place in Sharm-al-Sheikh, as far from the Egyptian population centers as possible. The invitation to Cairo was, therefore, a significant token of increasingly close relations. As a special gift for Netanyahu, Mubarak agreed to allow hundreds of Israelis to come to Egypt and pray at the grave of Rabbi Yaakov Abu-Hatzeira, who died and was buried in the Egyptian town of Damanhur 130 years ago, on his way from Morocco to the Holy Land. There is something symbolic about this: the blocking of the pro-Palestinian protesters on their way to Gaza at the same time as the invitation of Israelis to Damanhur. ONE MAY well wonder about the Egyptian participation in the blockade of the Gaza Strip. The blockade started long before the Gaza War and has turned the Strip into what has been described as “the biggest prison on earth”. The blockade applies to everything except essential medicines and the most basic foodstuffs. US senator John Kerry, former candidate for the presidency, was shocked to hear that the blockade included pasta – the Israeli army in its wisdom has designated noodles as a luxury. The blockade is all-embracing – from building materials to school children’s copy books. Except for the most extreme humanitarian cases, nobody can pass from the Gaza Strip to Israel or the West Bank, nor the other way round. But Israel controls only three sides of the Strip. The Northern and Eastern borders are blocked by the Israeli army, the Western border by the Israeli navy. The fourth border, the Southern one, is controlled by Egypt. Therefore, the entire blockade would be ineffective without Egyptian participation. Ostensibly, this does not make sense. Egypt considers itself as the leader of the Arab world. It is the most populous Arab country, situated at the center of the Arab world. Fifty years ago the president of Egypt, Gamal Abd-al-Nasser, was the idol of all the Arabs, especially of the Palestinians. How can Egypt collaborate with the “Zionist enemy”, as Egyptians called Israel then, in bringing 1.5 million brother Arabs to their knees? Until recently, the Egyptian government had been sticking to a solution that exemplifies the 6000-year old Egyptian political acumen. It participated in the blockade but closed its eyes to the hundreds of tunnels dug under the Egyptian-Gaza border, through which the daily supplies for the population were flowing (for exorbitant prices, and with high profits for Egyptian merchants), together with the stream of arms. People also passed through them – from Hamas activists to brides. This is about to change. Egypt has started building an iron wall – literally – along the full length of the Gaza border, consisting of steel pillars thrust deep into the ground, in order to block all tunnels. That will finally choke the inhabitants. When the most extreme Zionist, Vladimir Ze’ev Jabotinsky, wrote 80 years ago about erecting an “Iron Wall” against the Palestinians, he did not dream of Arabs doing just that. WHY DO they do it? There are several explanations. Cynics point out that the Egyptian government receives a huge American subsidy every year – almost two billion dollars – by courtesy of Israel. It started as a reward for the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. The pro-Israel lobby in the US Congress can stop it any time. Others believe that Mubarak is afraid of Hamas. The organization started out as the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, still the main opposition to his autocratic regime. The Cairo-Riyadh-Amman-Ramallah axis is poised against the Damascus-Gaza axis that is allied with the Tehran-Hizbullah axis. Many people believe that Mahmoud Abbas is interested in the tightening of the Gaza blockade in order to hurt Hamas. Mubarak is angry with Hamas, which refuses to dance to his tune. Like his predecessors, he demands that the Palestinians obey his orders. President Abd-al-Nasser was angry with the PLO (an organization created by him to ensure Egyptian control of the Palestinians, but which escaped him when Yasser Arafat took over). President Anwar Sadat was angry with the PLO for rejecting the Camp David agreement, which promised Palestinians only “autonomy”. How dare the Palestinians, a small, oppressed people, refuse the ”advice” of Big Brother? All these explanations make sense, yet the Egyptian government’s attitude is still astonishing. The Egyptian blockade of Gaza destroys the lives of 1.5 million human beings, men and women, old people and children, most of who are not Hamas activists. It is done publicly, before the eyes of hundreds of millions of Arabs, a billion and a quarter Muslims. In Egypt itself, too, millions of people are ashamed of the participation of their country in the starving of fellow Arabs. It is a very dangerous policy. Why does Mubarak follow it? THE REAL answer is, probably, that he has no choice. Egypt is a very proud country. Anyone who has been in Egypt knows that even the poorest Egyptian is full of national pride and is easily insulted when his national dignity is hurt. That was shown again a few weeks ago, when Egypt lost a soccer match with Algeria and behaved as if it has lost a war. “Consider that from the summit of these Pyramids, forty centuries look down upon you,” Napoleon told his soldiers on the eve of the battle for Cairo. Every Egyptian feels that 6000 – some say 8000 – years of history look upon him all the time. This profound feeling clashes with reality at a time when Egypt’s situation is getting more and more miserable. Saudi Arabia has more influence, tiny Dubai has become an international financial center, Iran is becoming a far more important regional power. Contrary to Iran, where the Ayatollahs have called upon families to limit themselves to two children, the Egyptian birthrate is devouring everything, condemning the country to permanent poverty. In the past, Egypt succeeded in balancing its internal weaknesses with external successes. The whole world considered Egypt as the leader of the Arab world, and treated it accordingly. No more. Egypt is in a bad situation. Therefore, Mubarak has no choice but to follow the dictates of the US – which are, in fact, Israeli dictates. That is the real explanation for his participation in the blockade. WHEN I spoke today at the demonstration in Tel-Aviv, after we had marched through the streets to protest against the blockade, I refrained from mentioning the Egyptian part in it. I confess that I liked the people I met during my visits to Egypt very much. The “man in the street” is very welcoming. In their behavior towards each other there is an air of tranquility, an absence of aggression, a particular Egyptian sense of humor. Even the poorest keep their dignity in crowded and often miserable conditions. I have not heard them grumble. In all the thousands of years of their history, Egyptians have risen in revolt no more than three or four times. This legendary patience has its negative side, too. When people are resigned to their lot, this may prevent economic, social and political progress. It seems that the Egyptian people are ready to accept everything. From the Pharaohs of old right down to the present Pharaoh, their rulers have faced little opposition. But a day may come when national pride will overcome even this patience. As an Israeli, I protest against the Israeli blockade. If I were an Egyptian, I would protest against the Egyptian blockade. As a citizen of this planet, I protest against both.

Hij schreef het volgende over Hedy Epstein, een '85-year-old German Jew who fled the Nazis in 1939, and is now promoting her hunger strike in Egypt' om op die manier aandacht te vragen voor het lot van de Palestijnse burgerbevolking die opgesloten zit in de Gazastrook:

Helaas was daar een mevrouw Hedy Epstein, die van het Holocaust-overlevingschap haar beroep gemaakt heeft ("Holocaust survivor and speaker") [...] Als een overlevende van de holocaust zo-nodig naar Gaza toe moet [...] dan heb je geen verstand van het verleden, dan heb je het wel meegemaakt maar dan heb je het niet begrepen. Feitelijk is dan alles wat je geleerd zou moeten hebben voor niets geweest [...] Hoeren zijn het, publieks- en publiciteitsgeile hoeren [...] Wat die Hedy Epstein bezielt is mij overigens een volkomen raadsel. De Gaza-strook is bezet door de Palestijnen, en die zelfde Palestijnen en de Arabische donorlanden hebben van Gaza een heel erg groot eeuwigdurend concentratiekamp gemaakt. Waarom zou Hedy Epstein daar heen willen? Was een keer in een concentratiekamp zitten niet voldoende? Wil ze zich even verlekkeren aan het feit dat er nu eens anderen in een concentratiekamp zitten soms?

Tot zover de visie van het canaille. Joodse solidariteit met de geterroriseerde Palestijnse medemens mag niet van de filosemiet. De jood moet van hem de rol van slachtoffer spelen en weigert die dit dan is ze een 'publiciteitsgeile hoer'. Net als zijn broer de antisemiet is de filosemiet alleen met zichzelf bezig.De jood, de Arabier, de ander is slechts een rol in zijn fascistische voorstelling van de wereld.

Ondertussen laat Van Sonthove het volgende weten op zijn site: 'Graag zit ik met mijn blote voeten in het warme zand van mijn geliefde eiland Curaçao.' Nog opzienbarender is zijn volgende onthulling: 'Er is niets mooiers op de aarde dan het laatste wat de Joods-Christelijk god geschapen heeft; de vrouw. Iedereen die daar met de koran in de hand anders over denkt die verdient het om een jaar door te brengen in Sitges, daar zijn alleen maar mannen. Leuk hè?' Ronduit grappig is zijn bewering dat 'de Joods-Christelijk god, de vrouw [geschapen heeft].' Het staat er echt. Ik neem aan dat deze 'Joods-Christelijke god,' (let op de hoofdletters) die natuurlijk de ware god moet zijn, alleen joodse en christelijke vrouwen heeft geschapen, en zeker niet ongelovige islamitische, boeddhistische, hindoeistische of animistische vrouwen, die allen in een dwaalleer geloven en niet in de 'Joods-Christelijke god'. Daarom is nu de vraag buitengewoon belangrijk: welke god heeft al deze andere vrouwen geschapen? Daar vertelt de filosemitische Arabierenhater Geert ons niets over. Jammer.

Vrouwelijke Israelische soldaten werden al meermalen als sekssymbolen voorgesteld, o.a. in bikini. Ik denk dat de psychologie hierachter is; het neerzetten van de "vrije sexy vrouw" tegenover de "onderdanige moslima". Je zou ook kunnen zeggen de moordenares en het slachtoffer.

(Belga) Voor de eerste keer in de geschiedenis van het Israëlisch leger hebben vrouwen een opleiding tot sluipschutter afgelegd, waarin ze naast andere vaardigheden, leerden een doel te raken vanop een kilometer afstand. Dat heeft een Israëlische militaire woordvoerster woensdag meegedeeld.

De zes weken durende opleiding tot sluipschutter werd tot voor kort beschouwd als een van de laatste "mannelijke bastions" binnen het leger, maar volgens de krant Ma'ariv waren 13 van de 16 deelnemers bij de laatste opleiding van vrouwelijke slag. De krant meldde dat de vrouwelijke sluipschutters, die onlangs werden ingezet aan de grens tussen Israël en het Sinaï-schiereiland, hebben voorkomen dat een halve ton drugs Israël werd binnengesmokkeld, toen ze twee drugssmokkelaars vanop een kilometer afstand uitschakelden. Een hogere officier zei dat het uiteindelijke doel is om bij elke infanteriebataljon een compagnie sluipschutters toe te voegen. Hij zei dat de sluipschutters, zowel mannelijke als vrouwelijke, de vaardigheid moeten hebben om tien uur in hinderlaag te wachten en binnen de minuut een schot moeten kunnen afvuren dat doeltreffend is. Het opmerkelijke aan het NRC-filosemitisme is dat het zowel een onderscheid maakt tussen joods en niet-joods als tussen man en vrouw. De vrouw blijft sex-object, die -- in de woorden van de krant -- 'leven [geeft]. Maar ze kan ook doden'. De slijpsteen voor de geest is niet in staat de vrouw te presenteren als gelijk aan mannen. Ze moet allereerst mannen blijven behagen, zelfs in uniform, en dus wordt ze afgebeeld als knuffelobject, als modepop met een bloem in het haar en een scherpschuttersgeweer tussen haar benen.

De NRC-porno: 'Dikla vindt het leger wel leuk. Ze bewaakt de grens met Egypte, waar veel gesmokkeld wordt. Ze heeft haar beste dagen als ze op pad is. „Het is zo spannend als er iets gebeurt en je er ‘s nachts met honden op uit kunt. Het geeft me een goed gevoel, dat is waar ik het voor doe.”'

De Filosemiet en de Antisemiet 2

Het is de NRC.next columnist Jan Blokker die constateerde dat 'na de Tweede Wereldoorlog het jodendom in de christelijke wereld vrijwel heilig [is] verklaard en geen volk dat in die processie zo hard vooroploopt als de Nederlanders.'

Net als de antisemiet classificeert de filosemiet de wereld in jood-niet jood, Arabier-niet Arabier, goed-kwaad. Zowel de antisemiet als de filosemiet is niet in staat mensen te onderscheiden op hun individuele karakteristieken. Zij kunnen mensen slechts zien via een of ander etiket. De fotoporno in de NRC is een illustrerend voorbeeld daarvan. De NRC zou natuurlijk nooit een Palestijnse verzetstrijder zo laten portretteren. Voor de NRC blijven Joden anders dan alle andere mensen op aarde. Ik denk dat de redactie zich daarvan niet eens bewust is. Het komt kennelijk niet in het hoofd van de redacteuren op om zich af te vragen waarom hun krant foto's publiceert van militairen die onderdeel zijn van een leger dat beschuldigd wordt van het plegen van grootschalige oorlogsmisdaden en dat al bijna 43 jaar lang het land bezet van de Palestijnse bevolking. Net als alle andere ismen neemt ook het filosemitisme steeds ziekere vormen aan, het is veranderd in liefde voor een extremistische zionistische staat. Het voorbeeld hieronder komt uit Amazon.Com:
