In plaats van een serieuze analyse van het kapitalisme te geven, het systeem waarbij een kleine elite schatrijk wordt en de rest van de mensen daarvoor betaald, houden de commerciele massamedia zich met futiliteiten bezigt. De Volkskrant meldt vandaag:

In 75 jaar groeiden die uit tot symbolen van het speculatieve grote geld, van extreme risico’s en van miljoenenbonussen die werden uitgekeerd voordat je kon zeggen: exhibitionistisch. Maandag vroegen de laatste twee overgebleven onafhankelijke zakenbanken aan de financiële autoriteiten of ze alstublieft gewone banken mogen worden. Dat mag.'

Maar de pyschologische consequenties van het kapitalisme voor de gokkers is niet het probleem waarmee wij zitten. Het probleem is het kapitalisme dat onvermijdelijk tot deze crisis leidt. De Volkskrant-verslaggever Robert Giebels, die doet alsof hij de 'achtergrond' beschrijft, leidt ondertussen de aandacht af van het ware probleem, doet het voorkomen alsof het een kwestie van 'nederigheid' is en schrijft over 'machobankiers'. Maar beste collega, niet het machismo maar het kapitalisme heeft tot dit probleem geleid. Waarom analyseer je dit niet? Mag het niet of snap je het niet? Hou op je lezers te bedriegen. Ga serieus aan het werk!

KARACHI - Pakistani authorities have compared Saturday evening's devastating truck suicide attack on the Marriott Hotel in the capital Islamabad to the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
In terms of its psychological effect, the blast, which killed more than 80 people, injured hundreds and burnt out the hotel, has traumatized the nation, and, like 9/11, marks the beginning of a new battle: this time not the "war on terror", but the war by terrorists.
Pakistan is now the declared battleground in this struggle by Islamic militants to strike first against American interests before the United States' war machine completes its preparations to storm the sanctuaries of al-Qaeda in Pakistan.
The attack on one of the hotels in the chain of the US Marriott group was one of the worst in Pakistan's history and involved the sophisticated use of over 600 kilograms of TNT explosive blended with RDX and phosphorous, detonated when a truck rammed into a security barricade in front of the hotel
Among the dead were the Czech ambassador to Pakistan, two US Marines, members of the US embassy staff, Saudi nationals and other European diplomats. More than 250 people were injured and dozens of parked cars were destroyed.
There was immediate speculation the attack was prompted by the fact of many marines living in the top floor of the hotel. Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani claimed the real target was his residence, where President Asif Ali Zardari, army chiefs of staff and the entire cabinet were gathered for an Iftar (Muslim breaking of the Ramadan fast) dinner. Security was so tight, the theory goes, that the driver instead went to the nearby Marriott.
But on Monday afternoon, Rehman Malik, the Pakistani prime minister's advisor for the interior, told a group of reporters at the Islamabad
airport: "An Iftar Dinner was scheduled at Marriot on September which was hosted by National Assembly Speaker Dr Fahmida Mirza and where all dignitaries including the prime minister, president, cabinet and all services chiefs were invited. However, at the eleventh hour the dinner was shifted to rime minster's house which saved Pakistan's entired military and political leadership."
"Perhaps, the earlier information of the dinner was leaked to the militants and therefore they hit Marriot hotel,"Rehman added.
However, Asia Times Online's investigations, including talks with highly placed security experts, indicate that the Marriott attack signals the opening of a major battle which is about to start in Pakistan in a new phase of the "war on terror".
Preparations for a new battle
Saturday's blast occurred on the day of Zardari's first presidential address to a joint session of parliament, after which he was due to depart for New York for the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.
He was also scheduled to meet leading US officials to discuss contentious issues in the "war on terror", especially the US's aggressive military incursions into Pakistan's tribal areas in recent weeks to attack al-Qaeda figures and militants.
Already, though, events had been set in motion to shape this new battlefield.'

De NRC bericht: 'Main Street is nog niet gered met noodfonds

Na de euforie van eind vorige week roept het op te richten Amerikaanse noodfonds dat de kredietcrisis moet temmen inmiddels vooral vragen op. En de tijd dringt. Door onze redacteur Maarten Schinkel

'Amsterdam, 22 sept. ‘'Een silo voor giftig afval’' wordt het fonds al genoemd dat de Amerikaanse regering in het leven roept om de kredietcrisis te temmen. Het gif bestaat uit complexe, op hypotheken gebaseerde beleggingen die de banksector vorige week bijna in een zwart gat deden verdwijnen.
In de silo past voor het onvoorstelbare bedrag van 700 miljard dollar (479 miljard euro) van het spul.
Afgelopen vrijdag maakten de financiële markten een reuzensprong van opluchting toen het fonds werd aangekondigd. Maar nu er een weekeinde overheen is gegaan, zijn er vooral vragen. De belangrijkste: is dit afdoende? Want als, na de reeks van nationalisaties en gedwongen huwelijken in de Amerikaanse financiële sector, ook dit paardenmiddel niet blijkt te werken, wat dan?' Main_Street_is_nog_niet_gered_met_noodfonds

Vragen, vragen, vragen. Waarom heet bij Maarten Schinkel Wall Street ineens Main Street? Want door het aan banden leggen van de topinkomens verander je niets aan het wezenlijke probleem, zijnde de handel in lucht waar het kapitalisme op uitgelopen is. Wall Street zal men moeten aanpakken, kosmetische veranderingen zijn niet voldoende meer. Of zoals een deskundige bij de BBC zei: 'het hele systeem is verrot.' Wie was bevangen door 'euforie' eind vorige week? Niet de deskundigen als Soros die veel van speculeren met lucht weet. Maar wie dan Maarten? De zwendelaars en speculanten die op dit moment aan de windhandel verdienen? Maar naar hen moet je zeker niet luisteren!

Waar haalt de Amerikaanse staat met zijn honderden miljarden schuld aan het buitenland het geld vandaan om de failliete inboedel van speculanten overeind te houden? Welke voorwaarden hebben de kapitalistische overheden bedongen bij het verlenen van steun aan de rijken? Niet dat het gespeculeer in lucht nu helemaal afgelopen moet zijn? Wat dan wel? En waarom wordt dit parisitair gespeculeer niet domweg verboden? Maarten, jij hebt er voor doorgeleerd, neem ik aan. Leg het je lezers nu eens uit. Waarom zwijg je hierover?

Maart 2008 schreef Maarten Schinkel dit in zijn krant:

'Begin jaren negentig keek het Westen meewarig naar Albanië, dat zijn hermetische socialisme achter zich liet. De Albanese bevolking bracht zijn spaargeld massaal naar piramidefondsen die torenhoge rentes beloofden. Ze was behoorlijk onder de indruk van deze zegening van het pas ontdekte kapitalisme: gratis geld, wie had dat gedacht? Toen het systeem vervolgens instortte raakte Albanië in een diepe crisis. De bevolking had hardhandig kennis gemaakt met een systeem dat het niet begreep. In zekere zin geldt dat op dit moment ook voor de westerse burger, die geen idee heeft van zijn eigen financiële systeem.' Ik schreef toen:
Beste Maarten: stel je de vraag hoe het komt dat jij daar nu pas achterkomt? Wat heb je al die jaren gedaan? Jij bent kennelijk een echte discipel geweest van het neoliberale geloof. Stel je de vraag hoe het komt dat de slijpsteen voor de geest nu juist jou heeft ingehuurd en niet iemand die al vanaf het moment dat hij bewust over de wereld nadacht, besefte dat het kapitalisme per definitie zwendel is, een irrationeel systeem dat in tegenstelling tot de natuur almaar moet blijven groeien om te kunnen overleven, een systeem dat enkele winnaars kent dankzij het feit dat de rest verliezers worden, dat het al sinds decennia alleen nog maar geld maakt met lucht, meer dan 90 procent van de geldtransacties op de wereld hebben niets meer met goederen of diensten te maken maar met speculeren. Hoe komt het dat de NRC-hoofdredactie een dromer als jij heeft aangenomen?'

Nooit antwoord op gekregen en ik vrees dat ook nu zijn lezers niet veel wijzer zullen worden. Wart drijft Maarten nu toch?

En nu we toch bezig zijn, in mei van dit jaar zat ik met Maarten voor een volle zaal in Amsterdam Noord. Ik vertelde de aanwezigen dat het kapitalistisch gespeculeer al decennialang niets anders was dan handel in lucht en dat de grote klap nog moest komen. Maarten Schinkel reageerde door te stellen dat ik overdreef, het was allemaal minder erg dan ik beweerde, zo liet hij het publiek weten. Hij kon ook niet anders, Maarten werkt voor de commerciele massamedia en weet als geen ander waar precies de grenzen van de consensus liggen. Enfin, in elk geval weet u dit zodra u weer eens de NRC inkijkt.

Roll Back the Interest Rates

"The point is, ladies and gentleman, is that greed - for lack of a better word - is good. Greed is right. Greed works."- Michael Douglas (Gordon Gecko) in Oliver Stone's 1987 film, "Wall Street."
Due to the "subprime" mortgages going bad the nation's biggest investment banks are going out of business and the American taxpayer will be required to rescue them to the tune of a Trillion, (that's trillion with a "T"), dollars.
However the reason the Mortgages are defaulting en masse is not primarily because the homebuyers took on too much debt, although that is a contributing factor. The real problem was the Adjustable Rate Mortgages, (ARMs). The homebuyer gets an attractive rate at the time they sign up and hopes the price of the property appreciates before the rate adjusts, upwards of course. In a market that would bear some resemblance to the market in which they signed up they could then refinance and make a go of it.
That is of course risky for both borrower and lender. What happened next is that the market got ahead of itself, a lot of loans were written very quickly. That left the lenders short of cash. In an attempt to replenish cash supplies the lenders raised the rates on the adjusting ARMs as much as they possibly could. They did so on a wide scale, nationally, and with absolute disregard for the consequences.
Homeowners were saddled overnight with payments dramatically higher that they signed up for and the seeds of a financial crisis were planted. Homeowners began to default in big numbers. As the number of defaults increased so did the pressure on the lenders and they pushed harder to recoup their losses raising interest rates, refusing to negotiate with strapped homeowners and using foreclosure recklessly. In that climate any chance of a homeowner refinancing was, regardless of borrower's track record for performance, difficult or flat-out impossible. Now it's not only a mortgage crisis it's a also hostage crisis.
But what would have happened if the federal government hadn't bought into Gordon Gecko's philosophy of greed as good? What if the fed had interceded early and rolled back the interest rates? How many homeowners/taxpayers would still be in their homes - making payments? Sure there was a bubble and everyone knew the market was going to adjust but it was a combination of greed and panic on the part of the lenders that set the stage for this crisis, their crisis.
The big bailout option doesn't fix the problem, it only converts the problem to national debt. The problem then lives on. Greed is not good...greed is not right...greed does not work. Roll back the interest rates, keep people in their homes, restore broad economic stability.'

Paulson Bailout Plan a Historic Swindle

Financial-market wise guys, who had been seized with fear, are suddenly drunk with hope. They are rallying explosively because they think they have successfully stampeded Washington into accepting the Wall Street Journal solution to the crisis: dump it all on the taxpayers. That is the meaning of the massive bailout Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has shopped around Congress. It would relieve the major banks and investment firms of their mountainous rotten assets and make the public swallow their losses - many hundreds of billions, maybe much more. What's not to like if you are a financial titan threatened with extinction?
If Wall Street gets away with this, it will represent an historic swindle of the American public - all sugar for the villains, lasting pain and damage for the victims. My advice to Washington politicians: Stop, take a deep breath and examine what you are being told to do by so-called "responsible opinion." If this deal succeeds, I predict it will become a transforming event in American politics - exposing the deep deformities in our democracy and launching a tidal wave of righteous anger and popular rebellion. As I have been saying for several months, this crisis has the potential to bring down one or both political parties, take your choice.
Christopher Whalen of Institutional Risk Analytics, a brave conservative critic, put it plainly: "The joyous reception from Congressional Democrats to Paulson's latest massive bailout proposal smells an awful lot like yet another corporatist lovefest between Washington's one-party government and the Sell Side investment banks."
A kindred critic, Josh Rosner of Graham Fisher in New York, defined the sponsors of this stampede to action: "Let us be clear, it is not citizen groups, private investors, equity investors or institutional investors broadly who are calling for this government purchase fund. It is almost exclusively being lobbied for by precisely those institutions that believed they were 'smarter than the rest of us,' institutions who need to get those assets off their balance sheet at an inflated value lest they be at risk of large losses or worse."
Let me be clear. The scandal is not that government is acting. The scandal is that government is not acting forcefully enough - using its ultimate emergency powers to take full control of the financial system and impose order on banks, firms and markets. Stop the music, so to speak, instead of allowing individual financiers and traders to take opportunistic moves to save themselves at the expense of the system. The step-by-step rescues that the Federal Reserve and Treasury have executed to date have failed utterly to reverse the flight of investors and banks worldwide from lending or buying in doubtful times. There is no obvious reason to assume this bailout proposal will change their minds, though it will certainly feel good to the financial houses that get to dump their bad paper on the government.
A serious intervention in which Washington takes charge would, first, require a new central authority to supervise the financial institutions and compel them to support the government's actions to stabilize the system. Government can apply killer leverage to the financial players: accept our objectives and follow our instructions or you are left on your own - cut off from government lending spigots and ineligible for any direct assistance. If they decline to cooperate, the money guys are stuck with their own mess. If they resist the government's orders to keep lending to the real economy of producers and consumers, banks and brokers will be effectively isolated, therefore doomed.'

CIDI-assistent Alex Burghoorn durfde pas enkele maanden geleden voorzichtigjes te melden dat er gewelddadige joodse kolonisten bestaan. Niet zozeer omdat ze daarvoor niet bestonden, maar omdat de de buitenlandse commerciële massamedia er over durfde te schrijven. Omdat de Amerikaanse regering wat had gesputterd in die richting. Dat alle nederzettingen op de bezette Westoever volgens het internationaal recht illegaal zijn durft Burghoorn hier echter niet te schrijven, maar maakt hij het merkwaardige onderscheid tussen "door Israël goedgekeurde nederzettingen" en "illegale buitenposten". Een klein detail dat verraadt dat het beleid van de Israëlische regering volgens hem blijkbaar buiten het internationaal recht mag vallen.
In Annapolis beloofde Olmert de uitbreiding van nederzettingen een halt toe te roepen. Hier leest u wat de Israëlische regering onder een 'vredesproces' verstaan, en de bouw van en bouwplannen voor nieuwe illegale nederzettingen en confiskering van Palestijns land. De expansie is na Annapolis nog nooit zo groot geweest."Israeli police are investigating a rampage by settlers in a Palestinian village in the West Bank on Saturday which PM Ehud Olmert called a "pogrom".Mr Olmert, who is about to step down, called the attack by about 100 settlers on Asira al-Qabaliya "intolerable"." BBC News 15 september 2008Geheel doodgezwegen in de Nederlandse media. In Haaretz een scherp artikel over dat de regering de kolonisten niet straffen voor hun terreur en het Israëlische leger werkeloos blijft toekijken.Door het project 'Shooting Back' van de Israëlische mensenrechtenorganisatie B'Tselem zijn er enkele beelden van de door Olmert genoemde "pogrom":

Ralph Milliband: 'Een ongelijke economische machtsverdeling, in de mate waarin deze in moderne westerse landen optreedt, sluit politieke gelijkheid bij voorbaat uit, wat er ook in de grondwet mag staan.'

In De staat in de kapitalistiche maatschappij schrijft deze inmiddels overleden Britse geleerde: 'als het nationaal belang onlosmakelijk met het wel en wee van het bedrijsleven verbonden is, kan steun aan de zakenwereld ook geen inbreuk op de onpartijdigheid van de regering betekenen. Integendeel, het is de beste manier waarop de regering haar rol als bewaker van het algemeen welzijn kan vervullen. Vanuit dit standpunt bezien is de beroemde uitspraak: ''What is good for General Motors is good for America'' maar in 1 opzicht verkeerd: in plaats van het bedrijfsleven als geheel, wordt er maar 1 bedrijf genomen. Maar wanneer General Motors als symbool voor de hele zakenwereld wordt genomen, zullen de regeringen van kapitalistische landen ongetwijfeld met de leus instemmen, en soms heel openlijk. En zij doen dit omdat zij van mening zijn dat de eonomische rationaliteit van de kapitalistische wereld gelijk kan worden gesteld met rationaliteit als zodanig, en daarom ook de best mogelijke economische en sociale structuur vertegenwoordigt in een wereld die helaas onvolmaakt moet blijven.'

Dit laatste is ook de verklaring waarom zoveel journalisten van de westerse commerciele massamedia binnen de waarheid van het kapitalisme blijven. Ze geloven er echt in en daarom kunnen ze zonder blikken of blozen zoveel aantoonbare nonsens blijven verspreiden.
