In zijn afscheidsrede als president van de Verenigde Staten waarschuwde Dwight Eisenhower voor het in zijn woorden: ‘militair-industrieel complex,’ waarvan ‘de totale invloed – economisch, politiek, zelfs spiritueel – in elke stad, elk staatsparlement, elk kantoor van de federale regering merkbaar is… We moeten niet nalaten zijn ernstige gevolgen te doorgronden. Onze bodem, hulpbronnen en levensonderhoud zijn daar allemaal bij betrokken; evenals het hele bouwwerk van onze samenleving.’ Dwight Eisenhower was tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog opperbevelhebber van de geallieerde strijdkrachten en was acht jaar lang president van de Verenigde Staten geweest. Hij wist dus waarover hij het had. Hij sprak deze waarschuwing uit in 1961. Bijna een halve eeuw later kan men constateren dat het proces van militarisering van de Amerikaanse samenleving ongestoord is doorgegaan.

'Baghdad Embassy Investigated for Labor Trafficking and Abuse

New evidence reveals previously unreported instances of appalling living conditions, abuse and coerced labor in the building of the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. Editor's note: Rumors of labor trafficking and abuse have plagued the building contractor now completing the $592 million Baghdad embassy building project, but a State Department inspector general investigation reported finding nothing untoward. Now David Phinney reveals previously unreported instances of appalling living conditions, abuse and coerced labor, making clear that the allegations against the contractor managing the embassy project remain unresolved.
In the months following September 2005, complaints began coming in to the U.S. State Department that all was not well with its most ambitious project ever: a sprawling new embassy project on the banks of the ancient Tigris River. The largest, most heavily fortified embassy in the world with over 20 buildings, it spans 104 acres-- comparable in size to the Vatican.
Soon after the State Department awarded a $592 million building contract to First Kuwaiti General Trading and Contracting in July 2005, thousands of low-paid migrant workers recruited from South Asia, the Philippines and other nations poured into Baghdad, beginning work to build the gargantuan complex within two years time. But sources involved in the embassy project tell Slogger that during First Kuwaiti’s rush to the finish the project by this summer on schedule, American managers and specialists involved with the project began protesting about the living and working conditions of lower-paid workers sequestered and largely unseen behind security walls bordering the embassy project inside the U.S.-controlled Green Zone.'

NEW REPORT CONDEMNS ISRAEL’S ‘BLATANT VIOLATION OF INTERNATIONAL LAW’ IN WEST BANK

Israel’s wall, checkpoints and settlements criticised ahead of 40th anniversary of occupation of Palestinian territory Amnesty International has today (4 June) criticised Israel’s “Blatant violation of international law” in the West Bank in a new report published ahead of the 40th anniversary (tomorrow) of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory. Israel’s security fence/wall – built largely on Palestinian land in defiance of the International Court of Justice – plus its network of checkpoints and its illegal settlements are all criticised in the report for inflicting unnecessary suffering on the Palestinian population. The human rights organisation, which is emphasising that it takes no sides over the Israel-Palestinian conflict or the occupation itself, is calling for an end to human rights violations that stem from Israel’s policy of entrenching the occupation through illegal and discriminatory measures. Amnesty International is also calling on Palestinian armed groups to end their targeting of Israeli civilians, both in Israel and in the occupied Palestinian territories. Amnesty International said: “Israel has every right to defend its citizens from armed attacks but absolutely no right to do so at the expense of innocent Palestinians. “Israel’s quite legitimate security concerns are no excuse for blatant violations of international law, nor the mistreatment of thousands of Palestinians in a massive programme of collective punishment.” Amnesty International’s 47-page report, “Enduring occupation: Palestinians under siege in the West Bank”, outlines the harmful effects of the huge “security” fence/wall that cuts into Palestinian land and the hundreds of checkpoints that are similarly sited on Palestinian territory - not at the border with Israel. The wall, already over 220 miles long and planned to extend for 450 miles, often loops deep into Palestinian farming land and even past Palestinian villages. Eighty per cent of the wall is built on Palestinian land and when completed it will effectively create a “land grab” amounting to 10% of the West Bank, land on which 60,000 Palestinians presently live. In line with international law, including an International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling in 2004, Amnesty International is calling for the wall to be dismantled where it is built on Palestinian land, and for farmers and others to be compensated for loss of land and livelihood and the destruction of buildings, olive tree orchards and other vital resources. Amnesty International said: "The Palestinian economy has virtually collapsed under the weight of harsh restrictions by Israel. This has only fuelled despair and poverty among a young and increasingly radicalised Palestinian population.” Amnesty International’s report also criticises Israel’s imposition of a huge network of 550 checkpoints in the West Bank. In addition to hundreds of temporary sites known as “flying checkpoints”, the barriers are criticised as having questionable security value while profoundly disrupting all aspects of Palestinian life. The report includes examples of expectant mothers prevented from reaching hospitals, bridegrooms unable to reach their own weddings and of ill infant children dying as they and their desperate parents were held back at checkpoints. Amnesty International added: “Israel’s legitimate right to defend its people cannot justify imposing hundreds and hundreds of checkpoints on Palestinian land. “Contrary to official claims about Israel’s overall ‘security’ needs, the checkpoints and restricted West Bank roads appear to exist mainly for the benefit of Israel’s settlements, settlements that are themselves illegal under international law.” Amnesty International, which takes no position on the occupation per se, is however pointing out that the 450,000 settlers living in 235 settlements and “outposts” do so in direct contravention of international humanitarian law and human rights principles. It is forbidden under the Geneva Conventions to move your own civilians into an occupied territory and the settlements - which receive privileged access to roads, resources and are for Jews only - are clearly discriminatory. Amnesty International continues to condemn all attacks by Palestinians on settlers at the same time that it calls for the settlements to be removed in accordance with humanitarian law and United Nations resolutions. Amnesty International is calling on the Israeli authorities to:
lift the regime of blockades and restrictions on Palestinians in the OPT, which constitute collective punishment, and ensure that restrictions imposed in response to specific security threats only target the individuals concerned -- not entire communities.
halt the construction of the fence/wall inside the West Bank, and remove the sections already built there;
cease the construction or expansion of Israeli settlements and related infrastructure in the OPT as a first step towards removing Israeli settlements and "outposts";
cancel all demolition orders on homes in the OPT, and provide reparation to Palestinians whose homes and properties have already been destroyed.'

The president stressed the importance of reinforcing wisdom and coherence more than before, and said, "Resistance of the Lebanese against atrocities of the Zionist regime and occupiers was a big victory for the Lebanese nation and all freedom-seeking people in the world." Arslan praised Iran's support for the Lebanese nation and said Iran and Lebanon as two friendly countries enjoy consolidated and enhanced ties.
He added Iran has a very important and vital position in the region and the world.

TEHERAN - De wereld zal binnen afzienbare tijd getuige zijn van de verwoesting van Israël. Dat heeft de Iraanse president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad zondag gezegd, meldde het staatspersbureau IRNA. De president sprak op een bijeenkomst van buitenlandse leiders ter gelegenheid van de achttiende sterfdag van ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
Volgens Ahmadinejad heeft de oorlog die Israël vorige zomer in Libanon tegen Hezbollah voerde aangetoond dat het land niet langer onverslaanbaar is. De oorlog had tot doel twee ontvoerde Israëlische militairen vrij te krijgen en Hezbollah een vernietigende slag toe te brengen. Geen van beide doelen is gehaald en de Israëlische premier Ehud Olmert staat sindsdien onder zware politieke druk.
Ahmadinejad heeft vaker van zich doen spreken met anti-Israëlische uitspraken. In oktober 2005 haalde hij zich de woede van velen op de hals door te stellen dat Israël van de kaart moet worden geveegd. Volgens aanhangers van Ahmadinejad is hij destijds echter verkeerd geciteerd. Zijn woorden hadden volgens hen moeten worden vertaald met zoiets als 'verdwijnen van de pagina's der geschiedenis'. Hij zou hebben willen suggereren dat Israël uit zichzelf ineen zal storten en niet door een buitenlandse mogendheid vernietigd wordt.

De Commerciele Massamedia 71

Citaat uit Wettig Opium 350 jaar Nederlandse opiumhandel, geschreven door Ewald Vanvugt. Na de Franse Revolutie en de woorden in de Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring, aan het eind van de achttiende eeuw, schreef het door de Nederlandse staat ingestelde Comite voor Oost-Indische Zaken in omslachtige maar niet mis te verstane bewoordingen:

Wij hebben nooit opgehouden te volharden in het denkbeeld dat de leer van vrijheid en gelijkheid, hoezeer gegrond op de onvervreemdbare rechten van de mens en burger en hoezeer ook geintroduceerd in dit gemenebest niet kan worden overgebracht naar 's Lands Indische bezittingen, zolang 's Lands zekerheid en veiligheid onder andere zal blijven afhangen van de daar aldaar heersende en dusver onontbeerlijke trap van ondergeschiktheid.

Een ander, even ongegrond gerucht, dat door onwetenden of kwaadwilligen moet zijn verzonnen, kunnen wij nog onbeschroomder tegenspreken. Kort samengevat staat er dat de Westerse beschaving de onbeschaafde volkeren als slaven mogen uitbuiten vanwege de bescherming van de veiligheid van het vaderland. Vooral het volgende woord is illustrerend voor de wijze waarop de taal als leugen kan worden gebruikt: deerniswaardig, een vermeninging van beklagenswaardig en deerniswekkend. En wat wordt bedoeld met onontbeerlijke? Onontbeerlijk voor het kolonialisme en de slavernij, maar niet in andere opzichten toch? Zolang wij Verlicht zijn, zullen de andere volkeren aan ons dienstbaar moeten blijven. Een perfecte cirkelredenering. Ook deze formulering is onthullend: schijnen gedoemd tot. Vroeger spraken de autoriteiten dit gewoon uit, nu gebruiken ze verhullende begrippen als democratie en mensenrechten. In de praktijk komt het allemaal op hetzelfde neer: neoliberale uitbuiting en neokolonialisme, zoals maar al te graag uitgedragen door de westerse commerciele massamedia.

Hans Wansink en Sara Berkeljon van de VolkskrantStel dat ik als journalist iemand of een paar mensen aan het woord laat die u publiekelijk beschuldigen van iets ernstigs. Moet ik u dan om een reactie hierop vragen? Ja, volgens de normen van de journalistiek zoals onder andere uitgesproken door de Raad voor de Journalistiek. Nee, volgens twee Volkskrantjournalisten. Nadat het duo op de vingers was getikt door de Raad voor de Journalistiek schrijven ze in een reactie het volgende:

'De uitspraak van de Raad verabsoluteert wederhoor als de toetssteen bij uitstek voor journalistieke kwaliteit. De Raad wekt daarmee de indruk dat journalistieke producties [...] die zonder wederhoor tot stand zijn gekomen, per definitie ondeugdelijk zijn. Wij menen dat het aan de journalist zelf is te beoordelen in welke gevallen wederhoor zinvol en noodzakelijk is. Het opnemen van een ontkenning maakt het voor de lezer moeilijker zelf te beoordelen wat waar of aannemelijk is.'

Het is buitengewoon opmerkelijk dat deze twee Volkskrantjournalisten nu eens eerlijk en zonder omwegen toegeven hoe ze te werk gaan. Wat staat hier precies? Allereerst dat het tweetal journalisten van een landelijke krant zelf wel bepaalt wanneer het iemand aan het woord laat, ook al betreft het hier ernstige beschuldigingen. En daarnaast - wat nog interessanter is - dat alleen zij en niemand anders bepalen wat de lezer al dan niet dient te weten om de door de journalisten en niemand anders bepaalde waarheid te kennen. Met andere woorden: elk feit, bijvoorbeeld een ontkenning of een weerlegging van u, wordt niet gemeld als dat in tegenspraak is met de door onze twee journalisten geformuleerde waarheid. Sterker nog: er wordt niet eens naar uw waarheid gevraagd. Misschien had u wel bevestigd waarvan u beschuldigd werd maar uw handelwijze in een volstrekt andere context geplaatst. Nee, daar is het duo niet in geinteresseerd, want uw waarheid 'maakt het voor de lezer moeilijker zelf te beoordelen wat waar en of aannemelijk is.' En dat laatste, wat waar en of aannemelijk is, die waarheid, wordt bepaald niet door de feiten, maar door de twee Volkskrant-journalisten, zo schrijven ze zelf. Al meer mensen hadden de indruk dat de Volkskrant zo te werk gaat, maar nu geven twee Volkskrant-journalisten dit in hun onnozelheid nog toe ook door het als argument op te voeren.

Deze werkwijze heet in de vakliteratuur propaganda. Het werd jarenlang in nazi-Duitsland en de Sovjet-Unie in praktijk gebracht. Uiteindelijk bleek het niet succesvol te werken, zoals de geschiedenis heeft uitgewezen. Men kan burgers enige tijd een rad voor ogen draaien, maar op een bepaald moment komen ze er door de praktijk van alledag achter dat het propaganda is. En toch willen mijn twee Volkskrant-collega's deze primitieve propaganda-doctrine weer invoeren. Ze komen daar openlijk voor uit. Wonderlijk, nietwaar? Maar wel eerlijk! U weet nu wat u leest zodra u de Volkskrant onder ogen hebt. Of juist niet?

In elk geval, de Franse socioloog Jacques Ellul toont in zijn boek Propaganda haarscherp aan dat het wezen van propaganda eruit bestaat dat het geen tegenspraak duldt. Dus elke informatie die de waarheid van een journalist of welke autoriteit dan ook weerlegt, wordt niet geduld. Ik wijs u er nogmaals op wat Milan Kundera met betrekking tot ons prachtvak heeft gezegd:

‘Je kunt je de toekomst wel voorstellen zonder de klassenstrijd of zonder de psychoanalyse, maar niet zonder de onweerstaanbare opkomst van pasklare ideeen die, ingevoerd in computers, gepropageerd door de massamedia, het gevaar met zich meebrengen binnenkort een macht te worden die elk oorspronkelijk en individueel denken verplettert en zo de werkelijke essentie van de Europese cultuur van onze tijd verstikt.’ Kundera waarschuwde ervoor dat we zo de wereld van de kitsch binnentreden. ‘Het woord kitsch verwijst naar de houding van degene die tot elke prijs zoveel mogelijk mensen wil behagen. Om te behagen dien je je te conformeren aan wat iedereen wenst te horen, in dienst te staan van de pasklare ideeen, in de taal van de schoonheid en de emotie. Hij beweegt ons tot tranen van zelfvertedering over de banaliteiten die wij denken en voelen… Op grond van de dwingende noodzaak te behagen en zo de aandacht van het grootst mogelijke publiek te trekken, is de esthetiek van de massamedia onvermijdelijk die van de kitsch en naarmate de massamedia ons gehele leven meer omsluiten en infiltreren, wordt de kitsch onze dagelijkse esthetiek en moraal.’

De Israelische Terreur 213

40 jaar bezetting is 40 jaar Israelische terreur geweest. Net zoals de Duitse bezetting 5 jaar lang terreur voor Nederland betekende. Zo simpel is het, behalve dan dat deze terreur inmiddels acht jaar langer duurt. Alleen al in 2006 werden 120 Palestijnse kinderen door Israel vermoord. Desondanks zijn er Nederlanders, politici, de pro-Israel lobby, vrome christenen en overtuigde liberalen die deze moorden, deze terreur goedpraten. Ik heb hier enkele volstrekt willekeurige foto's opgenomen van de dagelijkse terreur van de Israelische bezetting.

40 year of occupation and 60 years of wars: enough6/2/07 by MBQThose who planned the 1967 "six day war" (Al-Naksa in Arabic) 40 years ago and we the people who lived there could not foresee its ramifications on lives of Israelis and Palestinians let alone Americans and Iraqis today. I was a 10-year old kid growing up in the Shepherd's field at the time the occupation began and my memories of the initial onslaught are vivid. After I immigrated to the US in 1979, I still go almost every year and still maintain residency there. I saw it get worse and worse every year from 1967 (and I dread my trip this summer). What can be said after 40 years of illegal occupation, after over 250,000 Israeli Jewish colonial settlers in the West Bank, after over 18,000 of our homes demolished, after causing massive economic dislocation (unemployment is at twice what it was for Americans during the Great depression), after over 11,000 Palestinian political prisoners now in Israeli jails, after over 10,000 fellow Palestinian civilians killed? What can be said after the remaining Palestinians are squeezed into shrinking ghettos after much of their best lands was confiscated? Should we focus on the price the occupiers also paid (especially since the introduction of the phenomenon of suicide bombings 10 years ago). Should we focus on the price the world has paid including the unfolding tragedy in Iraq (and now the Israel lobby is pushing for a war on Iran)? How about the over $1 trillion that Israel cost the US in these 40 years?It was called a six day "war" because the Israeli aerial blitzkrieg so devastated the armies of Jordan, Syria, and Egypt in the first few hours that the remainder of the time was basically what it took infantry to occupy the West Bank, Gaza, Sinai, and the Golan Heights. Most analysts believe that this war was critical in cementing the Israel-US "strategic" relationship to a point of mutual dependency. But the survivors of the USS Liberty (A US Navy ship attacked by Israel in International waters on June 8, 1967) and all objective historians convincingly showed that: 1) Israel's attack on the USS Liberty was deliberate, and 2) that the Israeli lobby was already strong before the war and thus managed to stifle an inquiry (for details see http://www.ussliberty.org/ ). President Carter suggested that there are individuals seeking to silence debate on these issues. He was ruthlessly attacked thus proving his point. Similarly, a research paper on the Israel lobby by renounced scholars Mearsheimer (University of Chicago) and Walt (from Harvard) was attacked in a way that proves its salient points. Thanks to the Internet, it is becoming more difficult to silence the truth. So even if this article is not published in a US mainstream newspaper, it will be read by tens of thousands anyway. So let us look openly at the legacy of 1967.First let us dispense with the mythology about how that war started or its goals. For example Israeli General Matityahu Peled admitted: "The thesis that the danger of genocide was hanging over us in June 1967 and that Israel was fighting for its physical existence is only bluff, which was born and developed after the war...To pretend that the Egyptian forces massed on our frontiers were in a position to threaten the existence of Israel constitutes an insult not only to the intelligence of anyone capable of analyzing this sort of situation, but above all an insult to the Zahal Israeli army" (Ha'aretz, 19 March 1972). The largest evidence for Israel's intentions is the commencement of immediate Israeli settlement of the occupied areas. Israel also annexed 10% of the West Bank (expanded "greater Jerusalem") and all the Golan Heights. Israel hoped that through economic pressures, land and natural resource confiscations, and physical violence that they would annex the rest when the native population is reduced especially on the richest land areas. That is why Israeli colonies/settlements (which violate International law) sit atop the Western and Eastern water aquifers in and encircle Jerusalem (all in the West Bank). It is also why Israel still holds the Golan heights (for its water). The charade of colonial need for security (from those irrational and violent natives) has been always the mantra to use for further colonization and expansion whether used by European settlers in the Americas or the Apartheid regime in South Africa or Israel. For making all of this possible, the US lost so much credibility around the world. Votes at the UN General assembly now routinely see 160 countries voting one way while Israel and the US vote anther. Attacks on civilians by US supplied F-16s, Apache gunship helicopters, and cluster bombs are seen in other parts of the world as state terrorism and not as Israeli self-defense. Europeans polled by a large majority identified the US and Israel as the two most dangerous countries in the world. Indeed this is the legacy of the lobby that ensured the "special relationship" that would continue to drag us in America to wars in an endless cycle now packaged as "war on terrorism".'
