'World Bank's Wolfowitz heckled for Iraq role.

ATLANTA, (Reuters) - Iraq war protesters interrupted a speech by World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz on Sunday calling him a war criminal and saying he lied during the run-up to the war.
Wolfowitz, who was a deputy U.S. defense chief to Donald Rumsfeld and a key advocate of the Iraq war, was in an Atlanta synagogue to speak about the relevance of Africa for Americans.
At one point a man stood up silently at the front of the audience wearing an orange jumpsuit, seen by protesters as symbolic of clothes worn by prisoners at the U.S. jail at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
"You lied about the Iraq war! You are a war criminal!" shouted another woman as she was escorted from the synagogue. Some in the audience booed while a few said silent protests should be allowed.
Outside around 20 protesters held up signs condemning Wolfowitz and the war.
Wolfowitz said his current job prevented him from speaking about Iraq but during questions discussed the World Bank's policy on Iraq and defended Washington's decision to go to war.
"When it comes to Iraq I think it is fair and accurate to say that we did not go to war for oil," he said.
"The essential concern is to make difficult decisions about the security of the United States and that's what they did," he said in an apparent reference to official debate in the run-up to the 2003 war over whether Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.
Reconstruction efforts were impeded by the security situation but the World Bank was advising Baghdad on how to distribute its oil wealth, he said at the Ahavath Achim temple.
"The biggest question that Iraq faces in many ways is ... policy decisions about public resource management," he said referring to the country's oil revenue.
Democrats, who will control Congress starting in January, have promised to conduct vigorous reviews of U.S. policy on Iraq, including post-war reconstruction and stabilization.
Wolfowitz, who was appointed president of the World Bank last year, could be called to testify.'

De wijze waarop NOVA stilstond bij de dood van de Chileense dictator Pinochet is sommige kijkers in het verkeerde keelgat geschoten.Het voornaamste verwijt luidt dat een persoonlijke vriend van Pinochet alle ruimte kreeg om kritiekloos zijn zegje te doen. In plaats daarvan hadden we ons moeten houden bij de zwarte feiten achter het totalitaire bewind van Pinochet of bij de duistere rol van de Amerikanen op de achtergrond. Dat hebben we niet gedaan. En wel op grond van de volgende overwegingen.De feiten zijn bekend en onweersproken als het gaat om Pinochet: de staatsgreep, de 3000 doden en verdwijningen, de martelingen, het verbieden van politieke partijen en vrije pers - het spreekt allemaal voor zich. Ook de rol van de Amerikanen bij de staatsgreep is lang en breed bekend. Het is allemaal gedocumenteerd in een groot aantal bronnen, die voor een ieder toegankelijk zijn. Ook NOVA heeft daar in het verleden aandacht aan besteed.We zouden in onze taak tekortschieten als we zouden blijven steken in die feiten en de simpele veroordeling daarvan - zeker op een dag dat de voltallige pers terugblikt op de staatsgreep en de al vaak benadrukte gruwelijkheden. We hebben de aanvulling gezocht in twee onderbelicht gebleven feiten, namelijk dat de junta zijn almacht heeft gebruikt voor uitvoeren van een kapitalistisch experiment en het gegeven dat Pinochet een grote groep aanhangers heeft die de offers misschien niet goedpraat, maar wel relativeert en voor een deel rechtvaardigt - juist vanwege de resultaten van dat experiment.Wat de kijker daar ook van moge vinden; de Pinochettisten vertegenwoordigen een denkwereld die Chili 17 jaar lang heeft gedicteerd en wij achten het onze taak daarin inzicht te bieden. In Nederland is geen betere vertolker van dat gedachtengoed te vinden dan Peter Schaad - niet alleen leerde hij Pinochet persoonlijk kennen; ook was hij ondernemer in Chili in de beginjaren van diens regime. Dat we Schaad de ruimte geven wil niet zeggen dat we zijn mening delen; het betekent dat we zijn opvattingen relevant genoeg vinden om er kennis van te nemen.De aanname dat Schaad niet kritisch is ondervraagd of onweersproken blijft, is onjuist. Maar als hij zegt 3000 doden en 17 jaar onderdrukking een verantwoorde schadepost te vinden, dan komt het niet aan op doorvragen maar op een oordeel of die afweging abject is of niet. Dat geldt ook voor zijn overtuiging dat niet ieder land (en volk) gebaat is bij democratie. En voor dat oordeel heeft de kijker ons niet nodig.NOVA is er uiteindelijk om te informeren; niet om te getuigen. De impliciete opvatting van sommige briefschrijvers dat we de kijker maar op verkeerde ideeën brengen door mensen als Schaad aan het woord te laten, kunnen we niet serieus nemen. Aan bevoogding van het kijkerspubliek doen we niet mee, ook al omdat dat zomaar kan leiden tot vormen van zelfcensuur die haaks staan op onze informerende taak.Tot slot: tegenover Schaad staat de Chileen Bincho Alarcon, die niet alleen duidelijk is in zijn veroordeling van Pinochet, maar ook heldere vraagtekens en nuances plaatst bij de welvaart die de junta Chili heeft gebracht met het kapitalistische experiment en vooral bij wijze waarop dat is gebeurd: namelijk door alle critici de mond te snoeren. Om zijn opvattingen goed voor het voetlicht te brengen, hebben we besloten Alarcon te ondertitelen. Sommige kijkers ervaren dat kennelijk als denigrerend. Maar dat Alarcon minder goed Nederlands spreekt kan toch moeilijk reden zijn minder gewicht te hechten aan zijn woorden.

En twee uur later kreeg ik per email een reactie van Jan van Loenen zelf:

'Beste Stan,

Wat een enorm verhaal over de dictator.
Ik hem minder tijd (en zin) om zo uitvoerig op deze kwestie ingegaan.
Ik vond de aanpak die we hadden gekozen wel verrassend eerlijk gezegd.
De 24 uur die volgde op zijn dood is is vrijwel alle media stilgestaan bij
zijn misdadige regime. Wij hebben o.a. geluisterd naar een vriend van Pinochet,
wat niet hetzelfde is dat we het met deze mijnheer Schaad eens zijn.

We hebben hem wel vaker in NOVA gehad, toen Pinochet zich in Londen
liet behandelen, en min of meer de gast was van Margareth Thatcher.
Ik denk dat we door Schaad aan het woord te laten ons werk gewoon hebben gedaan.
Dat geluid hoor je niet vaak.
Verder zou ik het betreuren als je door één reportage die je niet aanstaat onze
vriendschap opzegt. Dan zou die vriendschap niet veel voorstellen, en dat idee
heb ik nou juist niet.

Nou Stan, mijn antwoord zal je wel niet bevallen, maar ik groet je
in vriendschap, dat wel.

Natuurlijk blijf ik bevriend met Jan, ondanks het feit dat ik het volstrekt oneens ben met zowel Jan als zijn hoofdredacteur Carel Kuyl. De reden dat ik het oneens met hen ben, zal ik morgen in een ander stuk motiveren. Ik kom erop terug niet om mijn gelijk te halen, maar omdat het geen triviaal onderwerp is. Het betreft hier het wezen van de commerciele media, een van de belangrijkste bronnen van informatie in een massamaatschappij.

'Arctic's summer sea ice 'could disappear completely by 2040.'
The Arctic could lose virtually all its summer sea ice by the year 2040 - 40 years earlier than previously thought - according to a study by leading climate scientists.

A rapid acceleration in the loss of sea ice seen in recent years will be dwarfed by the massive melting, up to four times faster than previously, which could take place within 20 years, the scientists predict.
If nothing is done to curb man-made emissions of greenhouse gases the Arctic Basin, from Siberia and Greenland to Canada and Alaska, could be open water in summer within the lifetime of today's children.
The findings, part of the fourth assessment of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) due next year, are published today in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
Previous climate models of the sea ice in the Arctic have suggested that the earliest date for a completely ice-free summer would be around 2080. An ice-free Arctic would almost certainly lead to the demise of many indigenous people and their way of life, along with the extinction of the polar bear and other species that rely on the year-long sea ice for survival.
The loss of sea ice could also lead to more serious long-term climate change, such as the disruption of the North Atlantic current that brings mild winters to Britain, or a more rapid loss of the Greenland ice sheet.
The latest study analysed levels of sea ice in the Arctic basin and used powerful supercomputers to model future scenarios of how the summer melting period is likely to develop.'

'U.S. dollar facing imminent collapse? Fed in bind as Paulsen, Bernanke head to China.

Even as the stock market is hitting new record highs almost every day, the Federal Reserve and Treasury Department are quietly coordinating a devaluation of the dollar that the Bush administration hopes will be a slow decline rather than a dollar collapse. This week, in an unusual move, the Bush administration is sending virtually the entire economic "A-team" to visit China for a "strategic economic dialogue" in Beijing Dec. 14 and 15. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke are leading the delegation, along with five other cabinet-level officials, including Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez. Also in the delegation will be Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, Energy Secretary Sam Bodman, and U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab. The Bush administration wants to get China's cooperation in preventing a dollar collapse. That's the conclusion of John Williams, an experienced professional econometrician, who writes the "Shadow Government Statistics" blog. Williams has re-created M3, a money-supply measure whose data the Federal Reserve simply stopped publishing after issuing a technically worded March 2006 announcement. Williams reports M3 is currently growing at close to a 9.6 percent rate and trending higher, compared with an 8 percent rate early this year, when the Fed quit reporting the measure. "The Fed is pumping liquidity into the U.S. economy," Williams told WND, "and the Fed evidently did not want the markets to follow too closely what the Fed was doing with the money supply." China today now is holding a historically unprecedented $1 trillion in foreign exchange reserves. During the Thanksgiving holiday, an announcement by China that their central bank planned to diversify foreign-exchange holding away from the dollar caused the dollar to drop in value on international currency markets. Since then, the dollar has hit a 20-month low against the euro. "This was almost an orchestrated announcement," Williams claimed. "Around Thanksgiving the markets were thinly traded. I'm not sure who was playing games there, but the signal was clearly heard." "You're dealing with mass psychology here," Williams argued. "The central bankers around the world know they are going to take a hit on their dollar holdings. None of the central bankers want to start a dollar panic, but none of the central bankers want to be the last out of the dollar, either."'

US interrogators have devised a new form of torture. It debases the democracy they claim to be defending.

After thousands of years of practice, you might have imagined that every possible means of inflicting pain had already been devised. But you should never underestimate the human capacity for invention. United States interrogators, we now discover, have found a new way of destroying a human being.
Last week, defence lawyers acting for Jose Padilla, a US citizen detained as an “enemy combatant”, released a video showing a mission fraught with deadly risk – taking him to the prison dentist. A group of masked guards in riot gear shackled his legs and hands, blindfolded him with black-out goggles and shut off his hearing with headphones, then marched him down the prison corridor(1).
Is Padilla really that dangerous? Far from it: his warders describe him as so docile and inactive that he could be mistaken for “a piece of furniture”. The purpose of these measures appeared to be to sustain the regime under which he had lived for over three years: total sensory deprivation. He had been kept in a blacked-out cell, unable to see or hear anything beyond it. Most importantly, he had no human contact, except for being bounced off the walls from time to time by his interrogators. As a result, he appears to have lost his mind. I don’t mean this metaphorically. I mean that his mind is no longer there.
The forensic psychiatrist who examined him says that he “does not appreciate the nature and consequences of the proceedings against him, is unable to render assistance to counsel, and has impairments in reasoning as the result of a mental illness, i.e., post-traumatic stress disorder, complicated by the neuropsychiatric effects of prolonged isolation.”(2) Jose Padilla appears to have been lobotomised: not medically, but socially.
If this was an attempt to extract information, it was ineffective: the authorities held him without charge for three and half years. Then, threatened by a supreme court ruling, they suddenly dropped their claims that he was trying to detonate a dirty bomb. They have now charged him with some vague and lesser offences to do with support for terrorism.'
