De grote Amerikaanse dichter William Carlos Williams beschreef de Verenigde Staten in zijn essaybundel In The American Grain (1933) op de volgende wijze:
it is still to-day the Puritan who keeps his frightened grip upon the throat of the world lest it should prove him empty…
The result of that brave setting out of the Pilgrims has been an atavism that thwarts and destroys. The agonized spirit, that has followed like an idiot with undeveloped brain, governs with its great muscles, babbling in a text of the dead years. Here souls perish miserably, or, escaping, are bent into grotesque designs of violence and despair, too powerful for men. One had not expected that this seed of England would come to impersonate, and to marry, the very primitive itself; to creep into the very intestines of the settlers and turn them against themselves, to befoul the New World.
It has become 'the most lawless country in the civilized world,' a panorama of murders, perversions, a terrific ungoverned strength excusable only because of the horrid beauty of its great machines. Today it is a generation of gross know-nothingism, of blackened churches where hymns groan like chants from stupefied jungles, a generation universally eager to barter permanent values (the hope of an aristocracy) in return for opportunist material advantages, a generation hating those whom it obeys.
What prevented the normal growth? Was it England, the northern strain, the soil they landed on? It was, of course, the whole weight of the wild continent that made their condition of mind advantageous, forcing it to produce its own likeness, and no more,

dat het lot de Verenigde Staten had voorbeschikt tot een grote mogendheid uit te groeien, die zich kon meten met de Europese imperia. Het geloof in de superioriteit van het Angelsaksische ras leidde tot een 'beschavingsoffensief' overzee en vormde een argument voor het Amerikaans imperialisme, dat eind 19e eeuw aan invloed won.
In de ogen van de blanke racist heeft dit 'manifeste lot' hem tot een 'exceptionalistisch' wezen gemaakt, een overtuiging waarin ironisch genoeg ook de eerste 'zwarte president' in het Witte Huis gelooft. Dermate 'exceptionalistisch' wordt de VS beschouwd dat het nog steeds, volgens een Nederlandse academicus als Ruud van Dijk, 'de onmisbare natie' is.
Het vermogen van de mens om zichzelf te bedriegen, is één van zijn opmerkelijkste psychische fenomenen, met name omdat de mens zichzelf ziet als 'het hoogst begaafde wezen op aarde.' Of zoals Van Dale's Groot Woordenboek der Nederlandse Taal (1992) stelt: 'het hoogst ontwikkelde… wezen, dat zich vooral door zijn rede en zijn taal van de dieren onderscheidt.' Het begrip 'rede' is afgeleid van het Latijnse woord 'ratio,' het openstaan voor 'verstandelijke argumenten, voor overreding vatbaar zijn.'
Laat ik deze formulering, waarover officieel geen meningsverschil bestaat, toepassen op het betoog van de universitair docent Ruud van Dijk in de Volkskrant van 19 december 2015 onder de kop: 'Amerika nog steeds de onmisbare natie [is].' Hij beweert dat 'Een van de belangrijkste doelstellingen van het Europese en Nederlandse beleid moet zijn te voorkomen dat Amerika niet langer verantwoordelijk wil zijn voor het functioneren van het internationale systeem.' Van Dijk gaat van het volgende uit:
Amerika's invloed is afgenomen, en het land ligt met zichzelf in de knoop onder invloed van de gevolgen van globalisering. Een volk dat zich per definitie als exceptioneel ziet, voelt zich door de buitenwereld belaagd.
Amerika kan minder, en omdat het zich bedreigd voelt bestaat de kans dat het meer aan het eigen belang gaat denken, en minder bereid raakt verantwoordelijkheid te nemen voor het functioneren van het internationale systeem. Dat zou een ramp betekenen, en dit voorkomen moet een van de belangrijkste doelstellingen van het Europese, en Nederlandse, beleid zijn.
Opvallend aan deze redenering is het gebrek aan logica, de essentie van het rationalisme waarop de wetenschap is gebaseerd. Zonder het te beseffen beschrijft Van Dijk de Verenigde Staten op dezelfde wijze als een psychiater iemand met een zware psychische stoornis diagnosticeert, namelijk als een paranoïde patiënt die ook nog eens lijdt aan narcisme, 'een obsessie met de eigen persoonlijkheid,' en wiens gedrag gekenmerkt wordt door 'egoïsme, dominantie, ambitie en gebrek aan inlevingsvermogen.' Geen zinnig mens zal ooit bepleiten om een individu dat zichzelf als 'exceptioneel' ziet en zich tegelijkertijd 'bedreigd voelt,' de 'verantwoordelijkheid' te geven van 'het internationale systeem.' Ieder mens met een greintje gezond verstand beseft maar al te goed hoe desastreus de macht zal uitwerken van een mens die zichzelf niet kent. En iemand die zichzelf niet beheerst kan onmogelijk over de wereld heersen, zonder chaos te veroorzaken. Hetzelfde geldt voor een grootmacht als de VS. Ter verduidelijking van het door Van Dijk gebruikte begrip 'exceptioneel': in de introductie van de essaybundel The Rhetoric of American Exceptionalism (2011), zetten de Amerikaanse hoogleraren David Weiss en Jason A. Edwards uiteen dat
American exceptionalism is the distinct belief that the United States is unique, if not superior, when compared to other nations. Champions of American exceptionalism hold that because of its national credo, historical evolution, and unique origins, America is a special nation with a special role –- possibly ordained by God -– to play in human history. The belief in American exceptionalism is a fundamental aspect of U.S. cultural capital and national identity. It is an essential part of America’s political, cultural, and social DNA.
Deborah Madsen has argued that American exceptionalism has always ‘offered a mythological refuge from the chaos of history and the uncertainty of life…' To believers in American exceptionalism, the United States continues to move in constant upward pattern, remaining the beacon of light in the darkness and the defender of the rights of man as long as the nation exists. Moreover, America and Americans are exceptional because they are charged with saving the world from itself; at the same time, America and Americans must maintain a high level of devotion to this destiny…
The rhetoric of American exceptionalism permeates every period of American history… American exceptionalism has been fundamental to political rhetoric, serving as the foundation for the doctrine of Manifest Destiny, which was used to justify the Mexican, Spanish–American, and Vietnam wars as well as the westward expansion of U.S. sovereignty across the American continent.
Het geloof, meer is het niet, dat de Amerikaan 'per definitie als exceptioneel ziet,' is natuurlijk in de kern irrationeel, net als elk geloof, of het nu het geloof is 'een uitverkoren volk' te zijn, dan wel het nog steeds wijd verspreide geloof van de mens met een witte huid dat hij 'superieur' is aan andere rassen. Het berust allemaal op een onbewijsbare religieuze dan wel ideologische veronderstelling. De vooraanstaande twintigste eeuwse Amerikaanse historicus Richard Hofstadter merkte dan ook nuchter op dat 'It has been our fate as a nation not to have ideologies, but to be one.' Amerikaan-zijn betekent dat een burger van dat land beschuldigd kan worden van 'anti-Amerikanisme.' Geen Nederlander zal het ooit in zijn hoofd halen om een landgenoot te beschuldigen van anti-Nederlandisme. Het woord bestaat dan ook niet. Amerikaan-zijn is een ideologische daad, onderdeel van een 'political religion,' zoals Hofstadter duidelijk maakte. De Amerikaanse politieke socioloog, wijlen professor Seymour Martin Lipset, wees daarbij in zijn studie American Exceptionalism. A Double-Edged Sword (1996) op het volgende:
The American disdain of authority, for conforming to the rules laid down by the state, has been related by some observers to other unique American traits, such as the highest crime rate, as well as the lowest level of voting participation, in the developed world. Basically, the American revolutionary libertarian tradition does not encourage obedience to the state and the law.
Vanzelfsprekend geldt precies hetzelfde voor de Amerikaanse financiële en politieke elite, die geen enkel respect voor het internationaal recht toont zodra haar eigen geglobaliseerde belangen in gedrang dreigen te komen. De New York Times-onderzoeksjournalist Tim Weiner beschreef in zijn 720 pagina's tellende, ook in het Nederlands vertaalde, boek Een Spoor van Vernieling. De Geschiedenis van de CIA (2007) tot welke terreur het Amerikaanse 'exceptionalisme' heeft geleid en nog steeds leidt. De Verenigde Staten liet, in de woorden van president Eisenhower 'a legacy of ashes' achter. Dit is niets nieuws, en de huidige elite schaamt zich er niet voor. De bekendste New York Times-columnist, de door Geert Mak zo bewonderde Thomas Friedman, vatte vanuit het perspectief van het Amerikaans 'exceptionalisme,' een en ander nog eens kort samen, toen hij op 28 maart 1999 in zijn krant voor het grote publiek uitlegde dat in het kader van 'A Manifesto for the Fast World’:
The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist. McDonald's cannot flourish without McDonnell Douglas, the designer of the F-15. And the hidden fist that keeps the world safe for Silicon Valley's technologies to flourish is called the US Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps.
De Amerikaanse onderzoeksjournalist Jeremy Scahill, werkte dit uiterst agressieve en gewelddadige 'exceptionalisme' verder uit in zijn 642 pagina's tellende boek Dirty Wars: The World Is A Battlefield (2013), een New York Times-bestseller:

De filmversie werd genomineerd voor een Oscar als beste documentaire van 2013. Het spreekt voor zich dat de 'politiek-literaire elite' in de polder voor dergelijke analyses geen ruimte heeft omdat zij uitgaat van 'onze' morele superioriteit, 'onze variatie in ideeën, onze tolerantie, onze openheid tegenover andere culturen,' zoals Geert Mak deze claim zo onbekommerd en gedachteloos onder woorden bracht. In de documentaire Dirty Wars laat Scahill het tegenovergestelde zien, wanneer hij een Amerikaanse insider aan het woord over JSOC, The Joint Special Operations Command:
We are now seeing the effects of covert intervention in countries on multiple continents without any thought to future repercussions. And it has gradually expanded. At one point it was 40 countries. It has now expanded to over 75. And there are dozens, if not hundreds of concurrent (gelijktijdige. svh) operations.

But in theory Congress is supposed to have oversight of these operations.

Scahill ontdekte dat
Bin Laden's death had given the war on terror a new life. After 9/11 there were 7 people on the kill-list. In Iraq 55 on the deck of cards. By Afghanistan there were thousands. But now the list itself was changing: signature strikes, crowd killing, a target-list was no longer needed to justify a strike… All boys over the age of fifteen, all men under the age of 70 were now fair game in targeted areas. Like a flywheel the global war on terror was spinning out of control.
I realize now that the story has no end. Somehow, in front of our eyes, undeclared wars have been launched across the globe, foreigners and citizens alike assassinated by presidential decree. The war on terror transformed into a self-fulfilling prophecy. How does a war like this ever end? And what happens to us when we finally see what is hidden in plain sight?

De Britse auteur Godfrey Hodgson, 'Fellow of the Rothermere American Institute van de University of Oxford,' concludeert in zijn boek The Myth of American Exceptionalism (2009) dat:
It has not been considered polite to say so, but American exceptionalism owes much to war, and specifically to the fact that in the twentieth century the American economy was twice left undamaged and indeed enriched by war, while all its potential competitors were transformed into pensioners.
Hij wijst er tevens op dat 'American exceptionalism' niets anders is dan 'essentially a form of nationalism.'
In modern times, those with power in Spain, France, Britain, Nazi Germany, and Soviet Russia and many other places have all at one time or another defined their national character and their historical role in terms of a mission to spread their ideas to the rest of the world,' en doorgaans met zoveel mogelijk geweld.
Each nation or empire or civilization, in its way, claimed a mission civilisatrice, as the French put it; each saw itself as what the Chinese call Chung Kuo or Zhongguo, which we usually translate as the Middle Kingdom, but which is perhaps more accurately rendered as 'the kingdom of the centre.' Now it is the turn of the United States to see itself as the Middle Kingdom. Indeed, just as British cartographers once place the Greenwich meridian at the center of the map on the schoolroom wall, now many American maps put America at the center of the world.
En ondertussen benadrukt op zijn beurt Ruud van Dijk, als docent aan de matig scorende Universiteit van Amsterdam, dat de VS 'de onmisbare natie,' blijft, die garant staat voor
vrije (zij het ook gereguleerde) markten, en open samenlevingen, tenminste als norm. Hoe nu? Tegelijkertijd 'vrij' en 'gereguleerd' zijn, is een tegenstrijdigheid die Van Dijk kennelijk ontgaat. 'Open samenlevingen,' terwijl de National Security Agency alles en iedereen afluistert, de macht over steeds meer staatsgeheimen beschikt, er nooit een publieke of politieke discussie is geweest over bijvoorbeeld de uitbreiding en verandering van de NAVO in een offensief bondgenootschap, en de kloof tussen arm en rijk in het Westen almaar toeneemt.
Washington [streeft] nog altijd naar een wereld waarin individuele vrijheden — fundamentele rechten van de mens — de norm zijn,
zoals 'we' allemaal hebben kunnen constateren tijdens de illegale inval in Irak in onder andere Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay, de martelingen op Bagram Airfield, de westerse oorlogsmisdaden in Afghanistan, Irak, Syrië, Libië en al die andere plaatsen waar de Dirty Wars van het de VS worden uitgevochten, waarbij volgens Ruud van Dijk 'individuele vrijheden — fundamentele rechten van de mens — de norm zijn.' De Universiteit van Amsterdam kent kennelijk geen wetenschappelijk verantwoorde normen. Ik kan niet anders dan waarnemen dat hoogleraren geschiedenis en de rest van het docerend personeel van de UVA geen boeken van Amerikaanse academisch geschoolde deskundigen, anders zouden ze Van Dijk wel tot de orde hebben geroepen. In plaats van de paranoia en het narcisme van de VS aan de kaak te stellen, voeden Nederlandse academici deze stoornis. Het is tekenend voor de groeiende waanzin binnen het universitaire wereldje in de polder. Er zijn hier maar weinigen die boven hun kleinburgerlijk milieu weten uit te stijgen. Ik weet van nabij hoe verstikkend het intellectuele klimaat aan de Nederlandse bolwerken van waardevrije wetenschappen kunnen zijn. Meer later.
Ruud van Dijk, Universiteit van Amsterdam, verklaart met grote stelligheid dat 'Washington nog altijd naar een wereld [streeft] waarin individuele vrijheden — fundamentele rechten van de mens — de norm zijn. Voor ons in de EU is het niet anders.'
