The American Empire: Murder Inc.

Posted on Jan 3, 2016

A supporter of Indonesia’s former President Suharto displayed a portrait of him outside the Jakarta hospital where the military dictator died in 2008. (Vincent Thian / AP)

Terror, intimidation and violence are the glue that holds empire together. Aerial bombardment, drone and missile attacks, artillery and mortar strikes, targeted assassinations, massacres, the detention of tens of thousands, death squad killings, torture, wholesale surveillance, extraordinary renditions, curfews, propaganda, a loss of civil liberties and pliant political puppets are the grist of our wars and proxy wars.
Countries we seek to dominate, from Indonesia and Guatemala to Iraq and Afghanistan, are intimately familiar with these brutal mechanisms of control. But the reality of empire rarely reaches the American public. The few atrocities that come to light are dismissed as isolated aberrations. The public is assured what has been uncovered will be investigated and will not take place again. The goals of empire, we are told by a subservient media and our ruling elites, are virtuous and noble. And the vast killing machine grinds forward, feeding, as it has always done, the swollen bank accounts of defense contractors and corporations that exploit natural resources and cheap labor around the globe.
There are very few journalists who have covered empire with more courage, tenacity and integrity than Allan Nairn. For more than three decades, he has reported from Central America, East Timor, Palestine, South Africa, Haiti and Indonesia—where Indonesian soldiers fractured his skull and arrested him. His reporting on the Indonesian government massacres in East Timor saw him branded a “threat to national security” and officially banned from occupied East Timor. Nairn returned clandestinely to East Timor on numerous occasions. His dogged reporting of torture and killing of civilians by the Indonesian military contributed to the U.S. Congress suspending military aid to Jakarta in 1993. He exposed U.S. complicity with death squads and paramilitary organizations carrying out murderous rampages in El Salvador, Guatemala and Haiti. During the 2014 presidential elections in Indonesia, where he spends much of his time, Nairn was threatened with arrest for exposing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto’s role in atrocities. Nairn’s reporting on army massacres was an important component in the trial of former Guatemalan President Efrain Ríos Montt. Gen. Montt ordered the killing of over 1,700 people in the Ixil region of the country in the early 1980s and was convicted in 2013 of genocide and crimes against humanity. He was sentenced to 80 years in prison. The conviction was later overturned.
Nairn, whom I spoke with in New York, reaches back to the genocide carried out against Native Americans, the institution of slavery and the murder of hundreds of workers and labor union organizers in the 19th and early 20th century to explain the roots of American imperial violence. He noted that, although wholesale massacres have become taboo on American soil in recent generations, the FBI was carrying out selective assassinations of black radicals, including Fred Hampton, in the 1960s. And police show little constraint in gunning down unarmed people of color in poor communities.

But overseas there are no restrictions. The indiscriminate slaughter of real or imagined opponents is considered a prerogative of imperial power. Violence is the primary language we use to speak to the rest of the world. Equivalents of Wounded Knee and My Lai take place beyond our borders with an unacknowledged frequency.
“To this day,” Nairn said, “it is politically permissible for U.S. forces to carry out or sponsor assassinations of civilians—students, journalists, religious leaders, peasant organizers, whomever. In fact, in U.S. politics, if presidents are reluctant, or seem reluctant to do this, they get castigated. They get called a wimp. George Bush Sr. came under vicious attack when he attempted through covert means to mount a coup in Panama against [Manuel] Noriega and it failed. And there was a cover [of Newsweek, with the headline ‘Fighting the “Wimp Factor” ’] where they were attacking Bush Sr. for not being strong enough.”
“I think it was within a week after that he invaded Panama formally, an invasion that included the burning of the neighborhood called El Chorrillo, where hundreds were killed, a poor neighborhood. The New York Times then ran a front-page analysis by R.W. Apple which said that Bush Sr. had completed his presidential initiation rite by demonstrating his willingness to shed blood,” Nairn went on. “Not his own blood, but the blood of foreigners, including of foreign civilians.”

Vluchtelingenstroom 50

it is still to-day the Puritan who keeps his frightened grip upon the throat of the world lest it should prove him empty…

The result of that brave setting out of the Pilgrims has been an atavism that thwarts and destroys. The agonized spirit, that has followed like an idiot with undeveloped brain, governs with its great muscles, babbling in a text of the dead years. Here souls perish miserably, or, escaping, are bent into grotesque designs of violence and despair, too powerful for men. One had not expected that this seed of England would come to impersonate, and to marry, the very primitive itself; to creep into the very intestines of the settlers and turn them against themselves, to befoul the New World.

It has become 'the most lawless country in the civilized world,' a panorama of murders, perversions, a terrific ungoverned strength excusable only because of the horrid beauty of its great machines. Today it is a generation of gross know-nothingism, of blackened churches where hymns groan like chants from stupefied jungles, a generation universally eager to barter permanent values (the hope of an aristocracy) in return for opportunist material advantages, a generation hating those whom it obeys.

What prevented the normal growth? Was it England, the northern strain, the soil they landed on? It was, of course, the whole weight of the wild continent that made their condition of mind advantageous, forcing it to produce its own likeness, and no more,

'Here souls perish miserably, or, escaping, are bent into grotesque designs of violence and despair, too powerful for men,' zeker wanneer die dode 'zielen' zichzelf wijs hebben gemaakt dat zij een 'manifest destiny,' bezitten, het geloof

American exceptionalism is the distinct belief that the United States is unique, if not superior, when compared to other nations. Champions of American exceptionalism hold that because of its national credo, historical evolution, and unique origins, America is a special nation with a special role –- possibly ordained by God -– to play in human history. The belief in American exceptionalism is a fundamental aspect of U.S. cultural capital and national identity. It is an essential part of America’s political, cultural, and social DNA.

Deborah Madsen has argued that American exceptionalism has always ‘offered a mythological refuge from the chaos of history and the uncertainty of life…' To believers in American exceptionalism, the United States continues to move in constant upward pattern, remaining the beacon of light in the darkness and the defender of the rights of man as long as the nation exists. Moreover, America and Americans are exceptional because they are charged with saving the world from itself; at the same time, America and Americans must maintain a high level of devotion to this destiny…

The rhetoric of American exceptionalism permeates every period of American history… American exceptionalism has been fundamental to political rhetoric, serving as the foundation for the doctrine of Manifest Destiny, which was used to justify the Mexican, Spanish–American, and Vietnam wars as well as the westward expansion of U.S. sovereignty across the American continent.

It has been our fate as a nation not to have ideologies, but to be one.'

The American disdain of authority, for conforming to the rules laid down by the state, has been related by some observers to other unique American traits, such as the highest crime rate, as well as the lowest level of voting participation, in the developed world. Basically, the American revolutionary libertarian tradition does not encourage obedience to the state and the law.

A Manifesto for the Fast World

The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist. McDonald's cannot flourish without McDonnell Douglas, the designer of the F-15. And the hidden fist that keeps the world safe for Silicon Valley's technologies to flourish is called the US Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps.

De Amerikaanse onderzoeksjournalist Jeremy Scahill, werkte dit uiterst agressieve en gewelddadige 'exceptionalisme' verder uit in zijn 642 pagina's tellende boek  Dirty Wars: The World Is A Battlefield (2013), een New York Times-bestseller:

In Dirty Wars, Jeremy Scahill, author of the New York Times bestseller Blackwater, takes us inside America’s new covert wars. The foot soldiers in these battles operate globally and inside the United States with orders from the White House to do whatever is necessary to hunt down, capture or kill individuals designated by the president as enemies…

As US leaders draw the country deeper into conflicts across the globe, setting the world stage for enormous destabilization and blowback, Americans are not only at greater risk—we are changing as a nation. Scahill unmasks the shadow warriors who prosecute these secret wars and puts a human face on the casualties of unaccountable violence that is now official policy: victims of night raids, secret prisons, cruise missile attacks and drone strikes, and whole classes of people branded as “suspected militants.” Through his brave reporting, Scahill exposes the true nature of the dirty wars the United States government struggles to keep hidden.

We are now seeing the effects of covert intervention in countries on multiple continents without any thought to future repercussions. And it has gradually expanded. At one point it was 40 countries. It has now expanded to over 75. And there are dozens, if not hundreds of concurrent (gelijktijdige. svh) operations.

Scahill merkt op:

But in theory Congress is supposed to have oversight of these operations.

waarop zijn informant reageert:

They don't want to step into the dark and see what goes on behind the curtain. Joint Special Operations Command became a paramilitary arm of the administration. Billions upon billions of dollars were poured into JSOC. What we have essentially done is created one hell of a hammer. And for the rest of our generation, for the rest of my lifetime this force will be continually searching for a nail.

Scahill ontdekte dat

Bin Laden's death had given the war on terror a new life. After 9/11 there were 7 people on the kill-list. In Iraq 55 on the deck of cards. By Afghanistan there were thousands. But now the list itself was changing: signature strikes, crowd killing, a target-list was no longer needed to justify a strike… All boys over the age of fifteen, all men under the age of 70 were now fair game in targeted areas. Like a flywheel the global war on terror was spinning out of control.

I realize now that the story has no end. Somehow, in front of our eyes, undeclared wars have been launched across the globe, foreigners and citizens alike assassinated by presidential decree. The war on terror transformed into a self-fulfilling prophecy. How does a war like this ever end? And what happens to us when we finally see what is hidden in plain sight?

In zijn gelijknamige boek toont Scahill aan hoe Amerikaanse 'elite soldiers operate worldwide, with thousands of secret commandos working in more than one hundred countries,' onder de naam van Joint Special Operation Forces (JSOC).

Funded through 'black budgets,' JSOC conduct missions in denied areas, engage in targeted killings, snatch and grab individuals and direct drone, AC-130 and cruise missile strikes. While the Bush administration deployed these ghost militias, President Barack Obama has expanded their operations and given them new scope and legitimacy.

As US leaders draw the country deeper into conflicts across the globe, setting the world stage for enormous destabilization and blowback, Americans are not only at greater risk — we are changing as a nation.

the shadow warriors who prosecute these wars and puts a human face on the casualties of unaccountable violence that is now official policy: victims of night raids, secret prisons, cruise missile strikes, and whole classes of people branded as 'suspected militants.' Through his brave reporting, Scahill exposes the true nature of the dirty wars the United States government struggles to keep hidden.

Bovendien bewijst hij dat:

As U.S. leaders draw the country deeper into conflicts across the globe, setting the world stage for enormous destabilization and blowback, Americans are not only at greater risk — we are changing as a nation,

en

unmasks the shadow warriors who prosecute these secret wars and put a human face on the casualties of uncountable violence that is now official policy: victims of night raids, secret prisons, cruise missile attacks and drone strikes, and whole classes of people branded as 'suspected militants.'

De gerenommeerde Scahill 'exposes the true nature of the dirty wars the United States government struggles to keep hidden.' The belief in American exceptionalism… an essential part of America’s political, cultural, and social DNA' is. De Britse auteur Godfrey Hodgson, 'Fellow of the Rothermere American Institute van de University of Oxford,' concludeert in zijn boek The Myth of American Exceptionalism (2009) dat:

It has not been considered polite to say so, but American exceptionalism owes much to war, and specifically to the fact that in the twentieth century the American economy was twice left undamaged and indeed enriched by war, while all its potential competitors were transformed into pensioners.

In modern times, those with power in Spain, France, Britain, Nazi Germany, and Soviet Russia and many other places have all at one time or another defined their national character and their historical role in terms of a mission to spread their ideas to the rest of the world,' en doorgaans met zoveel mogelijk geweld.

Each nation or empire or civilization, in its way, claimed a mission civilisatrice, as the French put it; each saw itself as what the Chinese call Chung Kuo or Zhongguo, which we usually translate as the Middle Kingdom, but which is perhaps more accurately rendered as 'the kingdom of the centre.' Now it is the turn of the United States to see itself as the Middle Kingdom. Indeed, just as British cartographers once place the Greenwich meridian at the center of the map on the schoolroom wall, now many American maps put America at the center of the world.

Machiavellian Whirlwind

Turkey, Saudi Reap Machiavellian Whirlwind

Finian CUNNINGHAM | 02.01.2016 | 00:00

The year ended, appropriately, with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan flying to Riyadh to hold a summit with Saudi King Salman. The meeting had the air of two leaders closing ranks after a year of setbacks. As the old adage puts it, misery needs company. And there is much misery that the Turkish and Saudi leadership have to console each other about.
Both Ankara and Riyadh have seen their military schemes in the region turn decidedly sour. Russia’s military intervention in Syria over the past three months has helped to stabilize the government of President Bashar al-Assad, which was targeted covertly by Turkey and Saudi Arabia for regime change. Washington and other NATO powers were to be sure part of the criminal plot. But it was Turkey and Saudi Arabia that served as the «point men».
Devastating losses inflicted by Russia against jihadist mercenaries have turned the tide on the dirty war co-sponsored by Ankara and Riyadh, with even the United States recently admitting that Russian President Vladimir Putin has succeeded in his strategic goals of stabilizing the Syrian state and long-time ally of Moscow.
Russia’s aerial bombardment of oil smuggling and weapons routes used by the jihadist proxy army have cut off supply lines that Turkey had enabled the terror brigades with. Estimated to have been earning the mercenaries millions of dollars per day, thanks to the collusion of Erdogan’s regime in Ankara, the decimation of oil contraband by Russian bombing raids has plugged the cash and weapons fuel for the terrorists waging war in Syria.
No wonder then that Erdogan was in Riyadh on December 29-30 to discuss the formation of a new «strategic cooperation council» with the House of Saud. The Turks and Saudis now find themselves with a serious funding problem for their regime-change scheme in Syria.
Saudi foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir, of course, did not mention Syria in public, and he tried his best to sanitize proceedings, saying of the summit: «The meeting produced a desire to set up a high-level strategic cooperation council between the two countries», in order to strengthen military, economic and investment cooperation.
But reading between the lines, the all-important, urgent backdrop for the summit is Syria.
According to Syrian sources, the Turk-Saudi arrangement for regime change in the neighboring state worked as follows. The Turks provided the logistical connections for weapons, jihadist fighters and training camps across the Syrian border, while the House of Saud was the main funding source for the nefarious enterprise going back to the origin of the conflict in March 2011. The Saudis would also provide weapons from their copious US-supplied arsenals, with tacit approval from the American Central Intelligence Agency.
Erdogan’s renewed military campaign against the breakaway Kurdish population in the southeast of his country and in northern Iraq, plus a general downturn in Turkey’s once-bustling economy has meant that Ankara certainly does not have the finances to fund its neo-Ottoman schemes. As already noted, the Russian air assaults along the Turk-Syrian border has put paid to illicit sources of smuggling cash. Thus, cash-strapped Erdogan is in a bind.
So too is Erdogan’s erstwhile financier in Riyadh. The oil-rich kingdom ended the year by posting a record budget deficit put at $98 billion – or 15 per cent of the country’s economy.
The Saudi rulers are now having to embark on a previously unheard-of austerity drive to rectify their awry finances. As the Financial Times headlined: «Saudis unveil radical austerity programme». The Saudi population is facing price hikes in fuel, electricity and water, which is an abrupt departure from the country’s «social contract» whereby the autocratic rulers have up to now always bought off discontent among «the commoners» with lavish subsidies to ease the cost of living.
This has implications for social unrest in the authoritarian kingdom. Despite decades of royal largesse, Saudi Arabia suffers from high levels of chronic unemployment and poverty, particularly among its youth. This reflects the rentier nature of the Saudi economy, typical of the oil-rich Gulf states. As much as one-third of the Saudi total population of 27 million are foreign expatriate workers, many of them from South Asia, providing cheap slave-labor. This has resulted in large sections of the Saudi native population being unemployed, which has been kept docile up to now through «hand-outs» from the Saudi oil coffers.
A major factor in Saudi Arabia’s dwindling state finances is the crash in world market oil prices. Only five years ago, the price of oil was well over $100 per barrel. Today it is down around $40, with a slump of 23 per cent this year alone.
Some 80 per cent of the Saudi state revenues depend on the sale of oil. That compares with Russia’s dependence on oil at around 15 per cent, owing to Russia’s much more industrially diversified economic development.
And here is where the plot thickens. Over-production of oil by the Saudis has contributed to the saturated supply in world markets, which has in turn driven down prices for the commodity.
Russia’s energy minister Alexander Novak was in no doubt who is to blame for the slump in market prices. Novak told Rossiya 24 TV channel this week: «Saudi Arabia has this year increased production by 1.5 million barrels per day, thus effectively destabilizing the situation on the market.»
Some analysts have averred that Saudi Arabia’s seemingly self-defeating policy has been motivated by a bid to defend its market position as the world’s second top oil producer along with Russia by driving out weaker competitors. A more mischievous explanation is that the Saudis were aiding and abetting Washington’s agenda of trying to damage Russia’s economy.
Either way, the upshot would seem to be that the Saudis have ended up doing more damage to their own interests by playing geopolitics with oil.
Adding to Saudi woes is its ongoing war in Yemen. Nine months of non-stop bombardment of its southern neighbor has achieved nothing for the House of Saud in terms of re-installing an ousted puppet-regime. There seems to be no end in sight for that war, which means the Saudis are set to pile up more military expenses in the year ahead, just at a time when the kingdom’s coffers are in arrears.
But as the Machiavellian schemes backfire for both Turkey and Saudi Arabia, there is perhaps a measure of good news for others. As UN-sponsored peace talks get underway over the coming weeks on the Syrian conflict, the setbacks for Ankara and Riyadh will strengthen the hand of Russia and its Syrian ally at the negotiating table.
It’s an ill-wind indeed that blows no-one any good. And at least the whirlwind that the Turks and Saudis are reaping from their own Machiavellian plots might just bring a reprieve for parties who are genuinely interested in seeking peace in the region.

Andre Vltchek

Syria is the Middle Eastern Stalingrad

2342343433Day and night, for years, an overwhelming force has been battering this quiet nation, one of the cradles of human civilization.
Hundreds of thousands have died, and millions have been forced to flee abroad or have been internally displaced. In many cities and villages, not one house is left intact.
But Syria is, against all odds, still standing.
During the last 3 years I worked in almost all of Syria’s perimeters, exposing the birth of ISIS in the NATO-run camps built in Turkey and Jordan. I worked in the occupied Golan Heights, and in Iraq. I also worked in Lebanon, a country now forced to host over 2 million (mostly Syrian) refugees.
The only reason why the West began its horrible destabilization campaign, was because it “could not tolerate” Syria’s disobedience and the socialist nature of its state. In short, the way the Syrian establishment was putting the welfare of its people above the interests of multi-national corporations.
*
More than two years ago, my former Indonesian film editor demanded an answer in a somewhat angry tone:
“So many people are dying in Syria! Is it really worth it? Wouldn’t it be easier and better for Syrians to just give up and let the US have what it is demanding?”
Chronically petrified, this young woman was always searching for easy solutions that would keep her safe, and safe with significant personal advantages. As so many others in this time and age, in order to survive and advance, she developed a complex system resting on betrayals, self-defenses and deceptions.
How to reply to such a question?
It was a legitimate one, after all.
Eduardo Galeano told me: “People know when it’s time to fight. We have no right to tell them … but when they decide, it is our obligation to support them, even to lead them if they approach us.”
In this case, the Syrian people decided. No government, no political force could move an entire nation to such tremendous heroism and sacrifice. Russians did it during World War Two, and the Syrians are doing it now.
Two years ago I replied like this: “I have witnessed the total collapse of the Middle East. There was nothing standing there anymore. Countries that opted for their own paths were literally leveled to the ground. Countries that succumbed to the dictates of the West lost their soul, culture and essence and were turned into some of the most miserable places on earth. And the Syrians knew it: were they to surrender, they would be converted into another Iraq, Yemen or Libya, even Afghanistan.”
And so Syria rose. It decided to fight, for itself and for its part of the world.
Again and again, it retained itself through the elections of its government. It leaned on its army. Whatever the West says, whatever the treasonous NGOs write, the simple logic just proves it all.
This modest nation does not have its own powerful media to share the extent of its courage and agony with the world. It is always the others who are commenting on its struggle, often in a totally malicious way.
But it is undeniable that whilst the Soviet forces stopped the advance of the German Nazis at Stalingrad, the Syrians have managed to stop the fascist forces of Western allies in its part of the world.
Of course Russia got directly involved. Of course China stood by, although often in the shadow. And Iran provided support. And Lebanon-based Hezbollah put up, what I often describe as, an epic fight on behalf of Damascus against the extremist monsters invented and armed by the West, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
But the main credit has to go to the Syrian people.
Yes, now there is nothing left of the Middle East. Now there are more tears than raindrops descending on this ancient land.
But Syria is standing. Burned, wounded, but standing.
And as is being widely reported, after the Russian armed forces came to the rescue of the Syrian nation, more than 1 million Syrian people were able to return home … often to encounter only ashes and devastation, but home.
Like people returned to Stalingrad, some 70 years ago.

So what would my answer be to that question now: “whether it would be easier the other way”, to surrender to the Empire?
I guess something like this:
“Life has meaning, it is worth living, only if some basic conditions can be fulfilled. One does not betray great love, be it love for another person or love for one’s country, humanity or ideals. If one does, it would be better not to be born at all. Then I say: the survival of humankind is the most sacred goal. Not some short-time personal gain or ‘safety’, but the survival of all of us, of people, as well as the safety of all of us, humans.”
When life itself is threatened, people tend to rise and fight, instinctively. During such moments, some of the most monumental chapters in human history are written.
Unfortunately, during these moments, millions tend to die.
But the devastation is not because of those who are defending our human race.
It is because of the imperialist monsters and their servants.
Most of us are dreaming about a world without wars, without violence. We want true kindness to prevail on earth. Many of us are working relentlessly for such a society.
But until it is constructed, until all extreme selfishness, greed and brutality are defeated, we have to fight for something much more “modest” – for the survival of people and of humanism.
The price is often horrible. But the alternative is one enormous gaping void. It is simply nothing – the end, full stop!
In Stalingrad, millions died so we could live. Nothing was left of the city, except some melted steel, scattered bricks and an ocean of corpses. Nazism was stopped. Western expansionism began its retreat, that time towards Berlin.
Now Syria, quietly but stoically and heroically, stands against Western, Qatari, Saudi, Israeli and Turkish plans to finish the Middle East.
And the Syrian people have won. For how long, I don’t know. But it has proven that an Arab country can still defeat the mightiest murderous hordes.

Israel’s Command of White House and US Congress, Financed by $6bn through the AIPAC Lobby in Washington

How Israeli pricetag terrorism is financed by $6bn through the AIPAC Lobby in Washington (and raises the possibility of global war in 2016)
The Zionist Council – now known as AIPAC – is the most powerful lobby of American foreign policy ever known. It decides who stands for election to Congress and who gets elected right across all fifty states of the Union.
Effectively, just 20% of the American electorate control the US Legislature and Administration in a process that runs counter to any form of democratic government.  It exerts that control by money paid to ensure that virtually no individual who does not support AIPAC’s political agenda for Israel is elected to Congress.
It is a complete corruption of the democratic process that effectively disenfranchises over 240m Americans and impacts the lives of billions around the world in the most powerful, long-running, political scam ever perpetrated in the West.
The consequences to the Middle East and to Europe are mind-blowing. The Israeli government virtually controls American global foreign policy both overtly through Mr Netanyahu’s direct instructions to Congress and covertly through AIPAC’s political machinations in Washington.
The result is effective Israeli command of the White House and the consequent impotency of the elected president.  A travesty of democratic government and an insult to justice, morality and civil rights that extends across the world and threatens eventual war with nuclear weapons.
There is no greater threat that faces the world in 2016.
