De Nuance van de NRC 2

NRC-correspondent Oscar Garschagen neemt de Israelische legerpropaganda weer klakkeloos over.

'Afgelopen nacht en vanochtend bestookte Israël opnieuw het vliegveld van Beiroet, alsmede een gasdepot in Sidon, de autoweg naar Damascus en meer dan vijftien bruggen. Israël wil Libanon van de buitenwereld afsluiten en concentreert zich daarnaast op het vernietigen van lanceerplaatsen en opslagbunkers voor middellangeafstandsraketten in het zuiden en oosten van het land. Het dodental aan Libanese zijde is opgelopen tot boven de vijftig.'

Hoe nu? In tegenstelling tot de kwaliteitskranten in de wereld heeft NRC geen correspondent ter plaatse. Toch beweert Garschagen vanuit Haifa dat Israel zich 'concentreert' op de vernietiging van lanceerplaatsen en opslagbunkers voor middellangeafstandraketten.' Hoe weet Oscar dit? Van de Israelische legervoorlichtingsdienst. Waarom noemt hij geen bron? Omdat de NRC-lezer daardoor misschien aan het twijfelen wordt gebracht over de juistheid van deze propaganda. Want hoe komt het toch dat er meer dan vijftig Libanese burgers om het leven zijn gekomen als de Israelische strijdkrachten zich zo concentreren op militaire doelen? Hoe komt het dat de Europese Unie spreekt van buitenproportioneel geweld' van Israel? Waarom worden bruggen, een internationaal vliegveld en gas en oliedepots gebombardeerd, die de infrastructuur vernietigen. Dat is collectief straffen van de burgerbevolking en het is in strijd met de Vierde Geneefse Conventie zoals Amnesty International vanochtend liet weten. Waarom daar niets over in het bericht van Garschagen? Is het internationaal recht een te verwaarlozen detail? Waarom zegt de NRC een krant te zijn die de nuance zoekt? Waarom heeft de NRC geen correspondent in de arabische wereld, die daar regelmatig over bericht en wel een correspondent in Israel?

Hoe het wel moet is in de Independent te lezen, een voorbeeld van onafhankelijke journalistiek, met bronvermelding dus. Iemand die ter plaatse is en weet waarover hij schrijft:

However, Hezbollah denied responsibility for a rocket attack late Thursday on Haifa, saying it would only fire on the Israeli coastal city if the Lebanese capital or its southern suburbs were hit.The Shiite militia, however, has fired volleys of Katyusha and other rockets on northern Israeli border communities.Israel has hit hundreds of targets in Lebanon, closing down the country's sole international airport and damaging the main highway to neighboring Syria. As Israeli ships blockade the coast, the assault has largely cut off the country .Caught in the middle of the fight between Hezbollah and Israel, the Lebanese government has asked the U.N. Security Council to demand a cease-fire by the two sides.Israel says it holds Lebanon responsible for Hezbollah's snatching of the soldiers. Waarom houdt de NRC zich niet aan deze simpele journalistieke regels? Hoor en wederhoor, vermelden van bronnen, het mijden van kwalificaties, een duidelijke scheiding aanbrengen tussen mening en feit. Zo moeilijk is dat toch niet voor een dagblad die zich afficheert als een kwaliteitskrant?
