Ik zag vanmiddag de speelfilm God Bless America die in de VS als een bom is ingeslagen. In de slotscene zegt de hoofdrolspeler Frank voordat hij het publiek van een soort American Idol-programma onder vuur neemt, het volgende:
'The important question is: Who are you? America has become a cruel and vicious place. We reward the shallowest, the dummest, the meanest and the loudest. No longer have we any common sense of decency, no sense of shame. There's no right or wrong. The worst qualities in people are looked up to and celebrated. Lying? Spreading Fear? Fine, as long as you make money doing it. We have become a nation of slogan-saying, bile-spewing, hate-mongers. We have lost our kindness. We have lost our soul. What have we become when we take the weakest in our society and hold them up to be ridiculed, laughed at for our sport and entertainment? Laughed at to the point where they will literally rather kill themselves than live with us anymore.'
Frank's monoloog wordt beeindigd door Steven, een vals zingende, dikke jongen die het publiek uit ongein tot held had gemaakt om hem in de finale te kunnen vernederen. Steven zegt:
'Frank. I did not try to kill myself because people were making fun of me. I tried to kill myself because they were not going to put me on tv anymore.'
Frank schiet hem dood met een pistool, terwijl zijn vriendin het publiek met een AK-47 beschiet.
